Abstract:In the eight series on the fascinating history of Dacryology, I will critically evaluate three anatomical and surgical treatises first published in 1718. While this paper will include biographical details of the Doyen, his work on lacrimal anatomy and his observations of lacrimal disorders will remain in the spotlight. The aim is to assess an old treatise in the context of the time it was written and churn out the learnings that history provides. The subject is Lorenz Heister (1683–1758) and his three classics "Chirurgie" , first published in 1718 in German, "Compendium Anatomicum", first published in 1721 in Latin, and "Medical, Chirurgical and Anatomical cases, and Observations", first published in 1755, in German (). Citation 1–5 He has been aptly considered the father of Surgical Anatomy in Germany. I will dissect these treatises separately to understand the concepts of lacrimal diseases and their treatments between 1721 and 1755.
