Abstract:Skopos theory for a long time remains the core of Functional School of translation. The major principle of Skopos theory is that translation should be processed from the perspective of the intended audiences. Its major theory structure makes it as the guiding principle of business English translation which requires communicative and social textual equivalence. Based on the analysis of Skopos theory and business English translation features, this paper focuses on developing business English translation strategies, particularly in the case of advertisement translation. It aims to play a positive role in promoting the research and practice of business English translation.

Abstract:With the study of Skopos theory, the paper searches for the translation strategies of sports advertisements. Based on the study of language characteristics of sports advertisements, the paper compares the linguistic differences between Chinese and English sports advertisements. This paper briefly discusses some problems of sports advertisement translation. By analyzing the translation strategies adopted by different translators, the paper attempts to find appropriate solutions to problems of translating. These solutions touch on four aspects, including adherence to Skopos theory, respecting foreign cultures, mastering the linguistic features of sports advertisements in English and Chinese, and achieving the function of communication. The paper draws the following conclusions: there are differences and similarities between Chinese and English sports advertisements. Translators can choose different methods to overcome cultural and linguistic barriers with the guidance of Skopos theory. Moreover, the Skopos theory is the best way to assess the quality of translation.

Abstract:As a cross-cultural communicative activity,translation and interpretation is greatly influenced by linguistic and cultural differences,which very often poses difficulties for translators and interpreters in three aspects:difficulties in translating and interpreting culturally-loaded expressions,difficulties because of structural and grammatical difference,and difficulties in tackling imagery confrontations.According to Skopos theory,the overall Skopos of translational action determines the translation process.Hence,different strategies should be employed flexibly by translators and interpreters when dealing with linguistic and cultural differences in translation and interpretation.

Research on Chinese-English Advertising Translation Based on Functional Theory

Abstract:The traditional studies of advertisement translation mainly focus on literature translation, which investigate the style of advertisements through analysis of the lexical and syntactic features and probe into the translation approaches with contrast between the English and Chinese styles of advertisements. Unfortunately, it is largely neglected to study the translation of product advertisements in relation to the theory of functional equivalence. Based on researches, this thesis tries to link the wording of advertisements with its actual context and meaning, and attempts to examine how functional equivalence is reflected in the translation of commercial advertisements in the hope of deepening the understanding of commercial advertisement translation and the theory of functional equivalence.

Abstract:Numerous criticisms have been addressed toward the application of Skopos theory within translation studies. Issues such as vague concepts of translation, ‘dethroning’ the source text, oversimplification and inapplicability to achieve equivalence for literary and religious texts are some of many critiques for Skopos theory. In addition, from a student’s perspective, it is argued that there is no specific guideline to carry out the theory. However, here, I would like to present my perspective as a student practicing translation as well as a brief overview of Skopos theory, its criticisms as well as its usefulness in actual implementation.

Theory and Practice in Language Studies

Abstract:Based on Translation Skopostheorie, the author briefly expounds the purpose of C-E translation of businesses’ promotional material. Simultaneously, the typical problems appeared in the translation process have been explored and analyzed. With practical examples, the author probes into some rules for solving these problems. The problems in such translation can be often found in the following four categories---straying away from the source text, being constrained to the source text, lacking in cultural elements, having grammatical errors and improper expressions. However, three rules of Skopostheorie---skopos rule, intratextual coherence rule, and inter-textual coherence rule may be used as guidance for solving these problems.

Abstract:Skopos theory is a theory of translation by the German translator Vermeer in 1978. In this theory, the process of translation is determined by the function of the product. This function is specified by the addressee. This theory is one of the functionalist approaches whose aim is to dethrone the source text (ST). This is done by emphasizing the role of the translator as a creator of the target text (TT)and giving priority to purpose(skopos)of producing TT. Functionalism is a major shift from a linguistic equivalence to functional appropriateness. Thus , translation is considered primarily as a process of intercultural communication whose end product is a text which has the ability to function appropriately in specific situations and context of use(Schaffner,1998a:3).

Abstract:Nowadays, advertising slogan has been used by various corporations as an aid to promote their products. As advertising slogan is crisp, concise, and direct, it has been viewed as the identity of a corporation. With the tide of globalization, the translation of slogan is much more important in for the corporation in world economy. This paper introduces the functional equivalence theory, which consists of two points: the receptor’ response and content over form. And the main function of the advertisement is vocative function, evoking the customers’ purchasing desire. At this point, Functional Equivalence Theory is suitable to guide the translation of advertising slogan, for it aims to achieve the equivalent or similar response between the receptors of the source text and those of the target text. What’s more, the application of this theory in Chinese-English translation is also discussed from many different respects base on the specific examples of slogans’ translation. At last, three useful strategies are proposed: literal translation, parody translation and creative translation.

Abstract:International trade between nations is expanding as a result of the development of economic globalization. Advertising is a type of appealing text that plays an important role in promoting products, attracting consumers, and establishing brand image. Among a large number of transnational corporations, the English-to-Chinese translation of the advertising text of Apple Inc. has distinctive characteristics, and the “Apple-style Chinese” has played a unique role in boosting its product sales and brand image. From the perspective of German Skopos Theory, this thesis first summarizes the evaluation criteria of advertising translation, then conducts a specific analysis of Apple’s advertising translation, and finally proposes some strategies for advertising translation in order to provide a variety of experiences for more multinational corporations.
Two Relations in Translation——Rethinking of the Skopostheory

Abstract:This paper first analyzes two relations confronting translators in translation: the intertextual relation and the interpersonal relation. It points out that translators should seek truth in handling texts and that the "skopos" in the skopostheory may mislead translators to violate this principle. By adopting "the value of trust" put forward by Chesterman, the author further emphasizes translators' pursuit of trust in interpersonal relation. The author indicates that translators should be more accountable for target readers and original senders and strive to maintain their trust toward translators and the translation industry.

Abstract:As economic globalization accelerates, foreign cosmetics have flooded into the Chinese market. The quality of English-to-Chinese (E-C) translations of cosmetic instructions becomes crucial, as these serve as a vital link between products and consumers. To understand the methods of translating cosmetic instructions, this paper examines the E-C translation of cosmetic instructions under the guidance of Skopos theory. By using a qualitative research method, this study analyzes the linguistic characteristics of the cosmetic instructions of seven renowned cosmetic brands in detail and discusses the application of Skopos theory in the E-C translation. It is found that English cosmetic instructions prefer simple words and sentences to introduce the product, while Chinese versions tend to use four-character idioms and flowery language to describe the cosmetics. Additionally, the Skopos rule, the coherence rule, and the fidelity rule in Skopos theory help achieve the intended objectives of the source text, maintain the coherence of the target text, and convey the original meanings. This study hopes to shed light on promoting communication and development in the translation of cosmetic instruction.
