Abstract:Integral equation method is applied to solve electromagnetic scattering from 3 D object with large aspect ratio. Fast multipole method (FMM) is used to expedite the computation of matrix vector multiplication in iterative solver. Meanwhile fast Fourier transform (FFT) is applied to further accelerate the computation of translation term. Numerical results show that the FMM FFT method is specially suit to solve scattering from 3 D object with large aspect ratio.

Abstract:The lifting wavelet like transform (LWLT) is applied to the fast multipole method (FMM) to complete the scattering analysis of three-dimensional (3D) objects. The aggregation matrix and disaggregation matrix are sparsified by the LWLT scheme in time. Numerical results for different. shaped three-dimensional objects are considered. It is shown that the proposed method can speed up FMM with lower memory required.

Abstract:It is well known that Green’s function can be expressed by multipole expansion, plane-wave expansion, and exponential expansion (spectral representation). These three expansions constitute of the foundations of the fast multipole algorithm (FMA). The plane-wave expansion has the low-frequency breakdown issue due to its failure in capturing the evanescent spectra, while the multipole expansion is inefficient at high frequencies. The spectral representation usually involves in direction-dependent issue. In this communication, the 2-D FMA is interpreted as Parseval’s theorem in Fourier transform. To achieve a stable and accurate transition between the multipole expansion and the plane-wave expansion, a novel diagonalization in the 2-D FMA is proposed with scaled special functions based on a discrete Fourier transform. A wideband fast algorithm with high accuracies can be achieved efficiently.
Fast and Accurate Solution of 3-D Vector Electromagnetic Scattering by Fmm with Higher Order Methods

Abstract:Recently, higher order methods for solving scattering from complex object have received intensive attention. The advantage of using higher order methods lies in their ability to represent fields/currents and model geometries more accurately than conventional low-order methods. At the same time, these methods enable us to represent the current distribution on the surface of scatterer with less number of unknowns. These methods include higher order patches and higher order basis functions. In this paper, the curvilinear triangular patch combined with higher order interpolatory vector basis functions and FMM is used to realize fast, accurate solution of electromagnetic problems. It attains much less unknowns than traditional low-order basis functions, while not sacrificing any accuracy. Some representative results are given to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.
A Hybridization of Multi-Level UV with the Hierarchical Fast Far Field Approximations for 3D Rough Surface Scattering

Abstract:This paper presents a hybrid multilevel UV method with the fast far field algorithm for the random rough surface scattering calculations. In the MLUV, a pre-ranked sampling algorithm is used to further compress the UV matrix pairs. To further improve the efficiency of the algorithm, from the second and third coarsest level, a hierarchical FAFFA is employed to further enhance the efficiency of the algorithm. A rough surface with 32-by-32 wavelengths is simulated with 1.5 million unknowns. The results show the efficiency of the algorithm.
Fast Multipole Accelerated Scattering Matrix Method for Multiple Scattering of A Large Number of Cylinders

Abstract:The lowering and raising operators of cylindrical harmonics are used to derive the general fast multipole expressions of arbitrary order Hankel functions. These expressions are then employed to transform the dense matrix in the scattering matrix method (SMM) into a combination of sparse matrices (aggregation, translation and disaggregation matrices). The novel method is referred to as fast multipole accelerated scattering matrix method (FMA-SMM). Theoretical study shows FMA-SMM has lower complexity O(N-1.5) instead of SMM's O(N-2), where N stands for total harmonics number used. An empirical formula is derived to relate the minimum group size in FMA-SMM to the highest order Hankel functions involved. The various implementation parameters are carefully investigated to guarantee the algorithm's accuracy and efficiency. The impact of the cylinders density on convergence rate of iterative solvers (BiCGStab(2) here), memory cost as well as CPU time is also investigated. Up to thousands of cylinders can be easily simulated and potential applications in photonic crystal devices are illustrated.

The P-FFT technique developed by our group earlier was extended in the current analysis. To show the efficiency of the MPI-based parallelization algorithm, the experiment results are given in the latter part of the paper and various comparisons are made for such a demonstration.

Abstract:Electromagnetic scattering analysis for radar cross section (RCS) prediction and electromagnetic compatibility analysis have extensive military and civil applications. Meanwhile, it presents very large computational demands. Parallel multi-level fast multipole method (MLFMM), a powerful and efficient computational algorithm on solving large-scale RCS problems, is developed and implemented on massively parallel, distributed memory computer systems. Multilevel grouping structure is partitioned carefully to separate computational tasks and reduce data communication. Message passing interface (MPI) is employed to perform the data transfer among processors and support the matrix-vector product in parallel iterative procedure. The accuracy of code is verified by comparison with results of benchmark target. The computational complexity and efficiency of parallel MLFMM is discussed. The parallel code is validated on Unix and Linux platforms with different number of processors, and proven to be scalable, portable, and efficient.

Abstract:For the electrically large coated scatterers, the multilevel fast physical optics (MLFPO) is proposed to accelerate the computation of the physical optical scattered fields. This method is based on the quadratic patch subdivision and multilevel technology. The surface is discretized by quadratic patches and the amplitude and function of physical optical integration are approximated by Lagrange interpolation polynomials. Finally, numerical example shows the effectiveness of the MLFPO method in accuracy and efficiency, which make a comparison between our method and the Gordon method.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new method for analyzing the scattering from combined conductor-dielectric bodies based on equivalent principle algorithm (EPA). The object is decomposed into several different parts. In each part, it can be an inhomogeneous dielectric or a perfect electric conductor (PEC) of arbitrary shape. Equivalent surfaces (ES) are built for the interactions between each parts. And the current translation from the object to ES can be accelerated by the transformed multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA). Numerical result demonstrates the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, the Adaptive Modified Characteristic Basis Function Method (AMCBFM) is proposed for quickly simulating electromagnetic scattering from a one-dimensional perfectly electric conductor (PEC) rough surface. Similar to the traditional characteristic basis function method (CBFM), Foldy-Lax multiple scattering equations are applied in order to construct the characteristic basis functions (CBFs). However, the CBFs of the AMCBFM are different from those of the CBFM. In the AMCBFM, the coefficients of the CBFs are first defined. Then, the coefficients and the CBFs are used to structure the total current, which is used to represent the induced current along the rough surface. Moreover, a current criterion is defined to adaptively halt the order of the CBFs. The validity and efficiency of the AMCBFM are assessed by comparing the numerical results of the AMCBFM with the method of moments (MoM). The AMCBFM can effectively reduce the size of the matrix, and it costs less than half the CPU time used by the MoM. Moreover, by comparing it with the traditional CBFM, the AMCBFM can guarantee the accuracy, reduce the number of iterations, and achieve better convergence performance than the CBFM does. The second order of the CBFs is set in the CBFM. Additionally, the first order of the CBFs of the AMCBFM alone is sufficient for this result.

Abstract:A hybrid method of multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) and adaptive cross approximation (ACA) algorithm for analysis of dielectric electromagnetic scattering is presented. In order to resolve the low frequency (LF) break down, ACA is applied to accelerate matrix vector multiplication operations in the lowest levels, while MLFMA is applied in higher levels to maintain high efficiency. Numerical results demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the hybrid method which can deal with LF break down when conventional MLFMA failed.

Abstract:The general fast multipole expressions of arbitrary order Hankel functions are derived by using lowering and raising operators of cylindrical harmonics. Abstract:In this paper, we proposed the fast physical optics (FPO) method to improve the efficiency of the traditional computation method for calculating the PO scattered fields. Based on the quadratic discretization, both of the quadratic amplitude and phase functions are derived by using the Langrange interpolation techniques. The scattered fields of the PEC scatterers and coated scatterers are both considered in this paper. The multilevel technology is introduced to deal with the multi-frequencies and multi-angles scattering cases. Compared with the brute force (BF) method, the numerical experiments demonstrate that this method could significantly reduce the workload while maintains the accuracy.

Abstract:Light scattering and absorption by small particles are widely used in fields such as biomedicine, information technology, and energy technology. However, their theoretical study requires not only a high level of knowledge in electromagnetism but also a high level of computer programming skills. To solve this problem, a software called PyMieLab (https://gitlab.com/Climb12/pymielab.git) for calculating the light scattering and absorption of spherical particles has been developed based on Mie theory. This software is interactive, versatile, visual, flexible, and scalable. It has a friendly graphical user interface and can be used as a numerical simulation platform for scientific research, as well as provides a rich database of particle refractive indices. Moreover, it offers a reliable research platform for discovering new optical properties of specific materials and exploring materials with better optical properties in related fields. This paper describes in detail the theoretical basis, the graphical user interface, the calculation functions, the operational and procedural processes, the features, and the numerical verification of the software. It illustrates the application value of the software with two simulation examples.

Abstract:Many materials combine a refractive boundary and a participating media on the interior. If the material has a low opacity, single scattering effects dominate in its appearance. Refraction at the boundary concentrates the incoming light, resulting in an important phenomenon called volume caustics. This phenomenon is hard to simulate. Previous methods used point-based light transport, but attributed point samples inefficiently, resulting in long computation time. In this paper, we use frequency analysis of light transport to allocate point samples efficiently. Our method works in two steps: in the first step, we compute volume samples along with their covariance matrices, encoding the illumination frequency content in a compact way. In the rendering step, we use the covariance matrices to compute the kernel size for each volume sample: small kernel for high-frequency single scattering, large kernel for lower frequencies. Our algorithm computes volume caustics with fewer volume samples, with no loss of quality. Our method is both faster and uses less memory than the original method. It is roughly twice as fast and uses one fifth of the memory. The extra cost of computing covariance matrices for frequency information is negligible.

Abstract:Multiple scattering of light in aerosol media is described in a simple picture within the framework of Mie theory. Our approach leads to an analytical expression of then-fold scattered electromagnetic field and then to an analytical derivation of multiple-scattering LIDAR equation form transport theory. This approach differs from both the descriptions of multiple scattering based on the approximation of radiative-tranfer theory and from statistical approaches mainly based on Monte-Carlo calculations. The physical quantities of interest are expressed by straightforward generalization of the corresponding single-scattering quantities. Therefore, the multiple-scattering contributions are calculated without losing the advantage of working with analytical expression in the frame of Mie theory.
