Abstract:Photocatalytic technologies have been widely considered as ideal ways to deal with the energy shortage and environmental crisis. Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are recognized as a new generation of photocatalysts on account of their tunable band gap, low binding energy, wide visible-light absorption range, high photoluminescence quantum yield and fast carrier transfer. However, the development of efficient MHP photocatalysts has also encountered challenges. MHPs with ionic crystal structures are difficult to stabilize under water, oxygen atmosphere and high temperatures, as well as the serious recombination of photogenerated electrons-holes and weak oxidation activity during photocatalysis. Herein, we overview recent advances and developments for MHPs in photocatalysis, including H 2 evolution, CO 2 reduction, organic pollutant degradation and NO removal. In the beginning, the photocatalytic fundamentals, crystal structures, coordination environments and characteristics of MHP photocatalysts have been discussed. In order to overcome the severe charge recombination, poor stability and lack of active sites of MHPs, various design strategies for efficient MHP photocatalysts are presented, such as morphology regulation, heterojunction construction, surface/interface modification and material encapsulation. In the end, the current challenges and outlooks of MHP photocatalysts are provided to highlight the glorious future and significant position of MHP materials for photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskite (MHP) materials have garnered significant interest in the realm of energy conversion and storage amid the push for carbon-neutral energy solutions, due to the tunable band gap, high light collection efficiency, high photogenerated carrier mobility, and high defect tolerance. Owing to the unique structure, MHPs have abundant active sites and can be easily functionalized, which is conducive to performance optimization for different applications. Here we reviewed the recent progress of MHPs systemically, covering physical and chemical properties, synthesis approaches, and their application in photocatalysis field. The photocatalytic applications of MHPs are mainly focused on hydrogen evolution, CO¬2 reduction, removal of organic pollutants and organic synthesis reactions such as photocatalytic C(sp3)−H bond activation, C−C bond, C−O bond or C−N bond coupling. Various aspects related to activity performance assessments, mechanism discussions, and correlation comparisons are also displayed. Simultaneously, comprehensive the design strategies such as intrinsic engineering, surface engineering, and heterojunction engineering of high-activity, selectivity, and stability photocatalysts for the solar-driven applications. Finally, the challenges and potential development opportunities of associated with MHPs are outlined.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites (MHP) emerged as highly promising materials for photocatalysis, offering significant advancements in the degradation of soluble and airborne pollutants, as well as the transformation of functional organic compounds. This comprehensive review focuses on recent developments in MHP-based photocatalysts, specifically examining two major categories: lead-based (such as CsPbBr 3 ) and lead-free variants ( e.g. Cs 2 AgBiX 6 , Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 and others). While the review briefly discusses the contributions of MHPs to hydrogen (H 2 ) production and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction, the main emphasis is on the design principles that determine the effectiveness of perovskites in facilitating organic reactions and degrading hazardous chemicals through oxidative transformations. Furthermore, the review addresses the key factors that influence the catalytic efficiency of perovskites, including charge recombination, reaction mechanisms involving free radicals, hydroxyl ions, and other ions, as well as phase transformation and solvent compatibility. By offering a comprehensive overview, this review aims to serve as a guide for the design of MHP-based photocatalysis and shed light on the common challenges faced by the scientific community in the domain of organic transformations.

Abstract:Photocatalytic technology is widely regarded as an important way to utilize solar energy and achieve carbon neutrality, which has attracted considerable attentions in various fields over the past decades. Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are recognized as "superstar" materials due to their exceptional photoelectric properties, readily accessible and tunable structure, which made them intensively studied in solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and solar energy conversion fields. Since 2018, increased attention has been focused on applying the MHPs as a heterogeneous visible light photocatalyst in catalyzing organic synthesis reactions. In this review, we present an overview of photocatalytic technology and principles of heterogeneous photocatalysis before delving into the structural characteristics, stability, and classifications of MHPs. We then focus on recent developments of MHPs in photocatalyzing various organic synthesis reactions, such as oxidation, cyclization, C-C coupling etc., based on their classifications and reported reaction types. Finally, we discuss the main limitations and prospects regarding the application of metal halide perovskites in organic synthesis.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen production, which directly converts solar energy into green chemical fuel, has received widespread attention. However, despite significant efforts, the efficiency of conventional photocatalytic materials remains below industrial requirements, owing to the intrinsic limitations such as insufficient light absorption and poor carrier transport capability. Metal halide perovskite (MHP) materials feature superior optoelectronic properties and structural flexibility, rendering them highly attractive candidates for photocatalysis. This review provides a concise introduction to the structural characteristics of MHPs and summarizes their recent progress in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, including single-component MHPs and MHP-based composites. The review also discuss the current challenges and prospects of MHP photocatalysts, which hold promise for advancing photocatalytic solar-to-hydrogen technology.

Abstract:Heterogeneous photocatalysts incorporating metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have garnered significant attention due to their remarkable attributes: strong visible-light absorption, tuneable band energy levels, rapid charge transfer, and defect tolerance. Additionally, the promising optical and electronic properties of MHP nanocrystals can be harnessed for photocatalytic applications through controlled crystal structure engineering, involving composition tuning via metal ion and halide ion variations, dimensional tuning, and surface chemistry modifications. Combination of perovskites with other materials can improve the photoinduced charge separation and charge transfer, building heterostructures with different band alignments, such as type-II, Z-scheme, and Schottky heterojunctions, which can fine-tune redox potentials of the perovskite for photocatalytic organic reactions. This review delves into the activation of organic molecules through charge and energy transfer mechanisms. The review further investigates the impact of crystal engineering on photocatalytic activity, spanning a diverse array of organic transformations, such as C–X bond formation (X = C, N, and O), [2 + 2] and [4 + 2] cycloadditions, substrate isomerization, and asymmetric catalysis. This study provides insights to propel the advancement of metal halide perovskite-based photocatalysts, thereby fostering innovation in organic chemical transformations.

Stabilizing Metal Halide Perovskites for Solar Fuel Production: Challenges, Solutions, and Future Prospects

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are emerging photocatalyst materials that can enable sustainable solar-to-chemical energy conversion by virtue of their broad absorption spectra, effective separation/transport of photogenerated carriers, and solution processability. Although preliminary studies show the excellent photocatalytic activities of MHPs, their intrinsic structural instability due to the low formation energy and soft ionic nature is an open challenge for their practical applications. This review discusses the latest understanding of the stability issue and strategies to overcome this issue for MHP-based photocatalysis. First, the origin of the instability issue at atomic levels and the design rules for robust structures are analyzed and elucidated. This is then followed by presenting several different material design strategies for stability enhancement, including reaction medium modification, material surface protection, structural dimensionality engineering, and chemical composition engineering. Emphases are placed on understanding the effects of these strategies on photocatalytic stability as well as the possible structure-performance correlation. Finally, the possible future research directions for pursuing stable and efficient MHP photocatalysts in order to accelerate their technological maturity on a practical scale are outlined. With that, it is hoped to provide readers a valuable snapshot of this rapidly developing and exciting field.

Abstract:<p>The past decade has witnessed the great success achieved by metal halide perovskites (MHPs) in photovoltaic and related fields. However, challenges still remain in further improving their performance, as well as, settling the stability issue for future commercialization. Recently, MHP/2D material heterostructures that combining MHPs with the low‐cost and solution‐processable 2D materials have demonstrated unprecedented improvement in both performance and stability due to the distinctive features at hetero‐interface. The diverse fabrication techniques of MHPs and 2D materials allow them to be assembled as heterostructures with different configurations in a variety of ways. Moreover, the large families of MHPs and 2D materials provide the opportunity for the rational design and modification on compositions and functionalities of MHP/2D materials heterostructures. Herein, a comprehensive review of MHP/2D material heterostructures from syntheses to applications is presented. First, various fabrication techniques for MHP/2D material heterostructures are introduced by classifying them into solid‐state methods and solution‐processed methods. Then the applications of MHP/2D heterostructures in various fields including photodetectors, solar cells, and photocatalysis are summarized in detail. Finally, current challenges for the development of MHP/2D material heterostructures are highlighted, and future opportunities for the advancements in this research field are also provided.</p>

Abstract:Metal halide perovskite nanocrystals have attracted great attention of researchers due to their unique optoelectronic properties such as high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), narrow full width at half-maximum (FWHM), long exciton diffusion length and high carrier mobility, which have been widely used in diverse fields including solar cells, photodetectors, light-emitting diodes, and lasers. Very recently, metal halide perovskites have emerged as a new class of materials in photocatalysis due to their promising photocatalytic performance. In this review, we summarize the recent advances on synthesis, modification and functionalization, with a specific focus on the photocatalytic application of metal halide perovskite nanocrystals. Finally, a brief outlook is proposed to point out the challenges in this emerging area. The goal of this view is to introduce the photocatalytic application of the metal halide perovskites and motivate researchers from different fields to explore more potentials in catalysis.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) exploitation represents the next big frontier in photovoltaic technologies. However, the extraordinary optoelectronic properties of these materials also call for alternative utilizations, such as in solar-driven photocatalysis, to better address the big challenges ahead for eco-sustainable human activities. In this contest the recent reports on MHPs structures, especially those stable in aqueous solutions, suggest the exciting possibility for efficient solar-driven perovskite-based hydrogen (H2) production. In this minireview such works are critically analyzed and classified according to their mechanism and working conditions. We focus on lead-free materials, because of the environmental issue represented by lead containing material, especially if exploited in aqueous medium, thus it is important to avoid its presence from the technology take-off. Particular emphasis is dedicated to the materials composition/structure impacting on this catalytic process. The rationalization of the distinctive traits characterizing MHPs-based H2 production could assist the future expansion of the field, supporting the path towards a new class of light-driven catalysts working in aqueous environments.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have become a promising candidate in a myriad of applications, such as light-emitting diodes, solar cells, lasing, photodetectors, photocatalysis, transistors, etc. This is related to the synergy of their excellent features, including high photoluminescence quantum yields, narrow and tunable emission, long charge carrier lifetimes, broad absorption spectrum along with high extinction absorptions coefficients, among others. However, the main bottleneck is the poor stability of the MHPs under ambient conditions. This is imposing severe restrictions with respect to their industrialized applications and commercialization. In this context, metal oxide (MOx) coatings have recently emerged as an efficient strategy toward overcoming the stabilities issues as well as retaining the excellent properties of the MHPs, and therefore facilitate the development of the related devices' stabilities and performances. This review provides a summary of the recent progress on synthetic methods, enhanced features, the techniques to assess the MHPs@MOx composites, and applications of the MHPs@MOx. Specially, novel approaches to fabricate the composites and new applications of the composites are also reported in this review for the first time. This is rounded by a critical outlook about the current MHPs' stability issues and the further direction to ensure a bright future of MHPs@MOx.

Abstract:The halide perovskite material has attracted vast attention as a versatile semiconductor in the past decade. With the unique advantages in physical and chemical properties, they have also shown great potential in photocatalytic applications. This review aims at the specific design principles triggered by the unique properties when employing halide-perovskite-based photocatalytic systems from the following perspectives: (I) Design of photoelectrocatalytic device structures including the n-i-p/p-i-n structure, photoelectrode device encapsulation, and electrolyte engineering. (II) The design of heterogeneous photocatalytic systems toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and CO 2 reduction reaction, including the light management, surface/interface engineering, stability improvement, product selectivity engineering, and reaction system engineering. (III) The photocatalysts for the environmental application and organic synthesis. Based on the analyses, the review also suggests the prospective research for the future development of halide-perovskite-based photocatalytic systems.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites (MHPs), in particular lead-based perovskites, have earned recognized fame in several fields for their outstanding optoelectronic properties, including direct generation of free charge carriers, optimal ambipolar charge carrier transport properties, high absorption coefficient, point-defect tolerance, and compositional versatility. Nowadays, this class of materials represents a real and promising alternative to silicon for photovoltaic technologies. This worthy success led to a growing interest in the exploration of MHPs in other hot research fields, such as solar-driven photocatalytic water splitting towards hydrogen production. Nevertheless, many of these perovskites show air and moisture instability problems that considerably hinder their practical application for photocatalytic water splitting. Moreover, if chemical instability is a problem that can be in part mitigated by the optimization of the chemical composition and crystal structure, the presence of lead represents a real problem for the practical application of MHPs in commercial devices due to environmental and healthcare issues. To successfully overcome these problems, lead-free metal halide perovskites (LFMHPs) have gained increasing interest thanks to their optoelectronic properties, comparable to lead-based materials, and their more eco-friendly nature. Among all the lead-free perovskite alternatives, this mini-review considers bismuth-based perovskites and perovskite derivatives with a specific focus on solar-driven photocatalysis application for H2 evolution. Special attention is dedicated to the structure and composition of the different materials and to the advantage of heterojunction engineering and the relative impact on the photocatalytic process.

Abstract:Organic pollutants such as fertilizers, oils, greases, pharmaceuticals, and organic dyes which endanger natural water resources and treated water waste are highly toxic and perilous; therefore, removing such matters prior to drainage into the environment is imperative. Designing technologies for degrading these contaminants have created a challenge to scientists and researchers. A variety of techniques have been utilized to degrade these organic pollutants. Photocatalysis is a promising technique due to its unique physicochemical, optical and electrical properties. In the current review, Metal Halide Perovskite-based photocatalysts employed to drive various reduction and oxidation reactions under light irradiation with suitable wavelengths were highlighted. The photocatalytic fundamentals of MHP-based photocatalysts including the basic mechanism of heterogeneous photocatalysis along with their synthesis methods have been summarized. The multifunctional properties of MHP-based photocatalysts in the degradation of organic pollutants have been emphasized through the presentation of several related recent studies. However, there is still no consensus among researchers about the most efficient composites as many challenges exist. While previously published papers on metal halide perovskite photocatalysts provided a general discussion on the various applications of MHPs in several aspects, the current review specifies and details the application MHPs on water treatment. Further, the effect of the different MHP synthesis methods on the removal of organic contaminants from water was addressed. Besides, this review enumerates the major obstacles that impede the wide application of MHP photocatalysis, and aims at suggesting some solutions to be accounted for in future research.

However, the potential applications of MHP nanocrystals are seriously hindered by their poor stability against heat, oxygen, moisture, light illumination, etc . In this review, we provide a current progress survey on the fundamental structural properties, photophysical properties, and stability issues of MHP nanocrystals. Among various stability enhancing strategies, we paid particular attention to the integration and encapsulation of MHP nanocrystals in porous framework materials (PFMs). The PFMs possess the advantages of design flexibility, high porosity, environmental stability, and extensive functionality, which could effectively improve the stability of MHP nanocrystals with additional functions. Furthermore, the promising future applications of MHP hybrids are summarized and prospected.

Simultaneous Defect Passivation and Co-catalyst Engineering Leads to Superior Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution on Metal Halide Perovskites

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have emerged as attractive candidates for producing green hydrogen via photocatalytic pathway. However, the presence of abundant defects and absence of efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) active sites on MHPs seriously limit the solar-to-chemical (STC) conversion efficiency. Herein, to address this issue, we present a bi-functionalization strategy through decorating MHPs with a molecular molybdenum-sulfur-containing co-catalyst precursor. By virtue of the strong chemical interaction between lead and sulfur and the good dispersion of the molecular co-catalyst precursor in the deposition solution, a uniform and intimate decoration of the MHPs surface with lead sulfide (PbS) and amorphous molybdenum sulfide (MoSx) co-catalysts is obtained simultaneously. We show that the PbS co-catalyst can effectively passivate the Pb-related defects on the MHPs surface, thus retarding the charge recombination and promoting the charge transfer efficiency significantly. The amorphous MoSx co-catalyst further promotes the extraction of photogenerated electrons from MHPs and facilitates the HER catalysis. Consequently, drastically enhanced photocatalytic HER activities are obtained on representative MHPs through the synergistic functionalization of PbS and MoSx co-catalysts. A solar-to-chemical (STC) conversion efficiency of ca. 4.63% is achieved on the bi-functionalized FAPbBr3-xIx, which is among the highest values reported for MHPs.

Abstract:The recent progress on defect engineering of metal halide perovskites (MHPs) for photocatalysis is summarized and reexamined, focusing on discussing and critically appraising the benefits of defects, together with outlining potentially promising opportunities and directions for moving MHP‐based photocatalysis research forward. Photocatalytic solar‐to‐fuel conversion over metal halide perovskites (MHPs) has recently attracted much attention, while the roles of defects in MHPs are still under debate. Specifically, the mainstream viewpoint is that the defects are detrimental to photocatalytic performance, while some recent studies show that certain types of defects contribute to photoactivity enhancement. However, a systematic summary of why it is contradictory and how the defects in MHPs affect photocatalytic performance is still lacking. In this review, the innovative roles of defects in MHP photocatalysts are highlighted. First, the origins of defects in MHPs are elaborated, followed by clarifying certain benefits of defects in photocatalysts including optical absorption, charge dynamics, and surface reaction. Afterward, the recent progress on defect‐related MHP photocatalysis, i.e., CO2 reduction, H2 generation, pollutant degradation, and organic synthesis is systematically discussed and critically appraised, putting emphasis on their beneficial effects. With defects offering peculiar sets of merits and demerits, the personal opinion on the ongoing challenges is concluded and outlining potentially promising opportunities for engineering defects on MHP photocatalysts. This critical review is anticipated to offer a better understanding of the MHP defects and spur some inspiration for designing efficient MHP photocatalysts.
