Abstract:Keigo Higashino's works can be recognized as an outstanding representative of Japanese detective lieracure.None of the three representative works discussed in this paper run out of the framework of detective stories,but they all become consolidated texts of multi-theme and multi-genre.The three television dramas adapted from the novels are reinterpreted by scenarists from multi-dimensional visions,so that they show new encoding systems and construct new meanings,which highlights that the different characteristics of the verbal and the graphic sign systems constrain the functions of signification and communication.

Abstract:Abstract This article examines the aesthetic and economic forms of judgment that guided the Japanese literature translation program at the American publisher Alfred A. Knopf Inc. in the 1950s—1970s. During these years, the editor Harold Strauss coordinated Knopf’s ambitious translation program that made dozens of recently written Japanese novels available in English to an American audience. This article provides a fresh perspective on Knopf’s well-known Japanese literature translation program by understanding it to be an illuminating case study that reveals how the practical business of cultural commerce mixes aesthetic and economic modes of valuation, producing provocative connections that link what might otherwise seem to be the antagonistic realms of art and the market. Guided by documents held in the Knopf corporate archive, the article shows how the aesthetics of modern Japanese literature and the economics of publishing each encountered the other in the transactional territory of translation.

Abstract:Noboru Tsujihara, a powerful writer in contemporary Japanese literature, has made great achievements in the art of fiction. Able to handle traditional and modern subjects with equal strength, he has won important Japanese literary awards for many times. By giving his short story “The Baseball King” a close reading, this essay intends to analyze the roles of memory and narration played in his art of fiction, with a particular focus on the metaphor of violence recurring in his fictions. This short story, fully displaying his creative techniques, is included in the collection of his short stories receiving the 2005 Ysunari Kawabata Literature Award.

Abstract:Contemporary literature encompasses not only works but also culture, defining the processes of the past preserved in the memory of posterity. Haruki Murakami influenced the shaping of this modern culture to a great extent. The research purpose is to investigate the phenomenon of Haruki Murakami analysing the components of the collective and individual consciousness of the Japanese nation in his fiction. At the methodological level, the following methods of analyzing literary phenomena were used in the training to solve the set tasks: hermeneutic interpretation and sociological method. The research reveals the main features of the urban world of the Japanese society portraying it in progress (from the post-war period to the present moment). The evolution process is portrayed as detachment, independence and solitude. The literary factors reflect both internal spiritual relations and global intercultural links. At the same time, the writer portrays Japan as a country experiencing technological and informational progress, thereby declaring that it is ready to accept and participate in the world changes and become a part of the globalisation process. The writer has made a great contribution to the treasury of Japanese literature and his works are considered an important part of the intercultural interactions between countries they are trying to achieve in a global world. The results close the theoretical and empirical gaps in the literature and literary criticism and contribute to the analysis of the cultural and literary traditions of Japan.

Abstract:This study investigates the influence of cultural and societal trends during the Taisho and Showa periods on the works of Edogawa Rampo, a renowned Japanese entertainment novelist. Through quantitative analysis of Rampo’s works, this study examined their key characteristics and stylistic changes over time. The results showed a significant difference in the importance of words in each work before and after World War II. Furthermore, four distinct styles of Rampo’s works were identified, indicating a tendency for changes in style from eccentricity, monstrosity, and gloominess before the war to aestheticism after the war. Overall, this study highlights the impact of historical and cultural contexts on the artistic expression of Rampo’s works.

Literature and Modern Japanese Urbanism: Features of the Traditional Worldview in a Modern Space

Abstract:This article was aimed to study the demonstration of urban images as topographic or background effects for depicting the social reality of life in large megacities. The research considered four literary works of Japanese and Chinese writers, namely the manga 'Hanzawa Naoki' (2020) by Jun Ikeido, the novel 'Convenience Store Woman' (2016) by Sayaka Murata, the manga 'Tokyo Ghoul' (2011) by Sui Ishida, and the Chinese novel 'Northern Girls' (2004) by Sheng Keyi. It was found that each literary work demonstrated the symbolism of the urban platform, on which specific cultural and social rules were formed (in the Japanese sense, the term 'joshiki' was used). So, there was a certain transformation of the Japanese traditional worldview to a mutually beneficial life activity, which can lead to marginalization. The study results also showed that the folklore images of Japanese yokai have transformed in the fantasy genre as metaphorical social roles that lack a sense of tolerance and liberality in the context of modern society.

Abstract:Abstract Mori Ōgai 森鷗外 (1862–1922) stands at the fountainhead of modern Japanese literature. He is most famous for his prose writings: the groundbreaking short story, Maihime 舞姬 (The Danseuse); the full-length novel, Gan 雁 (The Wild Goose); and a half-dozen lengthy historical biographies. Much of Ōgai’s most creative writing is found in his translations. In Sokkyō shijin 即興詩人, Hans Christian Andersen’s The Improvisatore is transformed into mesmerizing quasi-classical Japanese. Fausuto ファウスト, written in a pithy Japanese vernacular full of wit, provides the first full-length translation of the Goethe classic. And his renderings of plays by Ibsen and Strindberg stand at the forefront of modern Japanese theatre. Mori Ōgai’s Sino-Japanese poems are especially important. They are revealing in biographical terms, the better to understand Ōgai (the person, the author, the public figure); in historical terms, to comprehend better the era in which he wrote, as well as how he experienced it and perceived earlier periods; and in literary terms, the better to appreciate his achievement as a writer. The selection presented here is revelatory on all three counts. One should keep in mind that, by writing in classical Chinese, Ōgai was not only participating in a centuries-long tradition in Japan. He was also “enacting civilization”, as it were, by writing in the pan-East Asian idiom that anyone educated was assumed to know. By the time the following poem was written, such a view had become quite conservative, if not reactionary.

Abstract:In the late 1990s, Hirokazu Kore-eda was praised as the embodiment of the "new wave of Japanese cinema." From the earliest "Magic Light" which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, to the widely spread "Walk" and then to the Palme d 'Or winner "Shoplifters", all of these prove that this Oriental director full of life philosophy has brought his lifelong thinking about life and death, family and society into his plain and warm works, which have great research value. This paper will discuss the screen structure of "Our Little Sister", starting from the audio-visual language, narrative structure, and spiritual core that the director wants to convey. It can be concluded that the film "Our Little Sister", directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, has a warm, natural, fresh, and lively image style that is delicate and close to life.

Abstract:Yasunari Kawabata is a Japanese writer who won the Nobel Prize in literature. One of his most popular novels entitled Snow Country is full of Japanese cultural values. The purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which the novel Snow Country reflects the life and culture of Japanese society. The method used is descriptive qualitative which describes and analyzes the collected data taken from the quotations of the novel. In analyzing the data, the writers use the mimetic approach and the concept of culture by Hammersley (2019) to reflect aspects of Japanese culture in literary works based on reality. The result of the study proves that the cultural depiction in Snow Country is in accordance with the cultural reality that exists in Japan, and based on the concept of culture by Hammersley, the culture found in this novel are divided in the form of Japanese cultural tools, cultural environment and the life of Geisha. The Japanese cultural tools including traditional drink ‘Sake’, traditional clothes/dress ‘Kotatsu, Kimono and Yukata’, art ‘Kabuki’ and music ‘Shamisen’, art or mode of Japanese houses in Daimyo Period, Traditional Japanese Houses ‘Shouji Sliding Doors’ and ‘Tatami’. Japanese cultural environments are found by the depiction of situations in Hot Springs ‘Onsen’, habits of Japanese society in autumn and winter. Abstract:Abstract Mo Yan, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2012, has published many new works of different genres since 2017, such as novels, poems, dramas, operas and even sketch stories, attracting a lot of attention and discussion. Although these new works are numerous, they are still characterized by exploration and transition. There is a phenomenon of “unfinalizability” in these new novels, which is characteristic of Mo Yan’s literary writings, such as the recurrence of the literary figure “Mo Yan”. Mo Yan has adopted many writing techniques in his new works to strengthen their concern and criticism of reality, such as reflecting society through focusing on individuals, close-up simple descriptions, typification of contemporary group mentality and a new “hit acupoint” illustration style. Moreover, his new novels present literary, realistic and even philosophical “uncertainty” through a method of life intuition. However, when we analyze Mo Yan’s new works in his whole writing lineage, we will realize the author’s loyalty to reality and art, and his works’ foreseeing power unconsciously becomes evident.

Abstract:The word “Gifted scholar” riginated from Chinese literature During the exchange of Chinese culture with East Asian countries, “Gifted scholar” was absorbed by Japan, which was influenced by Chinese culture, and became a synonym for the hero in Japanese romance novels. As an imitative work of the Chinese Yuan drama “The Romance of the West Chamber”, the Japanese Chinese-character novels “The Romance of Happy Couple ” has both similarities and differences with the Image of Gifted scholar in the Story of “The Romance of the West Chamber”. Based on text analysis, this paper will sort out the content about the image of the gifted scholar in the Chinese and Japanese “The Story of the West Chamber”, highlight the different aspects of the image of the gifted scholar in the two works, and focus on exploring the reasons for this difference. The Japanese writer Miki Aika was influenced by Chinese Confucian culture. The male protagonist in “The Romance of Happy Couple” inherited the image of talented scholar who combines talent, amorous feeling and appearance from “The Romance of the West Chamber”. On the other hand, due to the cultural characteristics of the Japanese nation and the development of the Meiji Restoration, the image of the gifted scholar in Japan's “The Story of the West Chamber” has changed again. By examining and comparing the image of the gifted scholar in Chinese and Japanese “The Story of the West Chamber”, this paper explains that although the external image of the hero in the is similar to that of the Chinese gifted scholar, his inner core characteristics still contain Japan’s national character and contemporaneity.

Abstract:A characteristic feature of the existential philosophy is its closeness to fiction the ideas of existentialism were most vividly embodied in the works of several European and American writers and turned out to be consonant with the worldview of several Japanese prose writers, such as Dazai Osamu. His work is still one of the widely popular among Japanese readers. In Dazai’s last completed work, the story “Confession of the Interior Man” existential motives are clearly felt. The spiritual disintegration of the personality thrown into the cruel and senseless world of modern postindustrial society, is described here in detail. The autobiographical hero of “Confession” (the writer himself became his prototype) makes desperate attempts to find a way of existence that would correspond to this in human world. However, despite all efforts, it turns out to be torn out of it. Dazai’s hero, who rejects society and puts the asocial individual at the forefront, is capable in several cases of a fairy sober assessment of the Japanese social structure. But while criticizing society as such, he criticizes specific social relations with their alienation, atomization of citizens and brutal competition. The gifted and sensitive artist Dazai Osamu was able to discern the process of disintegration of the traditional Japanese identity in the changing conditions of life in 20th century Japan. The Japanese prose writer endowed the character of his story with the freedom of existential choice of “Self”, but he is forced to choose not between the “genuine Self” and the “inauthentic Self”, but to look only for some form of the “inauthentic Self”. This is ersatz-freedom of an existential individual a social outcast-egoist, following his own desires.

Abstract:Since its publication in 2008,The Song of Everlasting Sorrow,the translation of Wang Anyi's novel,has received various reports and criticism in mainstream West.A research into the process of its translation and the picture of its reception helps us know why and how Chinese literature have a unique appeal to the West.And it helps us see clearly how English readers,guided by western-orientated paradigms,recognize and understand Chinese literature,and especially how ideology and cultural values influence the way of reception.The case study provides a good reference to the translation and reception of Chinese modern literature and culture in the West.
Suicides of elite Japanese writers: The case of Ryunosuke Akutagawa

Abstract:Background . To mark the 130th birth anniversary of Japanese writer Ryunosuke Akutagawa (1892-1927), I revisit his suicide (as recorded by his hand) in comparison to that of his junior contemporaries, who also chose a similar mode of death. Data sources . Two works of Akutagawa, namely Tenkibo (1926: Death Register) and Aru Ahono Issho (1927: The Life of a Stupid Man) in English translation of Jay Rubin were used as the main sources, in addition to published literature about his creativity. Results . In his final work, The Life of a Stupid Man, completed in the penultimate month before suicide, 7 among the 51 brief descriptions, Akutagawa had described his thoughts on illness and death, in addition to visiting his biological mother in a lunatic asylum, and studying a cadaver for his famous short story 'Rashomon'. These descriptions offer a fascinating perspective on Akutagawa's state of mind, before his suicide. Akutagawa's suicide is also compared with the suicides of five other renowned Japanese writers (Osamu Dazai, Yasunari Kawabata, Misuzu Kaneko, Yukio Mishima and Juzo Itami). Conclusion . Before his suicide, doctors offered Akutagawa various diagnoses: 'insomnia, gastric hyperacidity, gastric atony, dry pleurisy, neurasthenia, chronic conjunctivitis, brain fatigue'. Though it is uncertain, what percentage of hereditary factor(s) played a role, why the practitioners of the medical profession in 1920s Japan failed to save the life of this creative individual still remains a question.

Abstract:The subject of the study is the work of the largest Japanese writer of the XX century. Tanizaki Junichiro (谷崎潤一郎, 1886-1965), in particular, the essay "The present and the future of cinema" (活動写真の現在と将来, Katsudo:syasin no genzai to se: Paradise, 1917). This work can be described as a milestone, because it marks the beginning of the evolution of Tanizaki Junichiro's creative thought – passion for modernism, progress, cinema. After the publication of the essay "The Present and the Future of cinema", there is an increased interest in the writer's visual techniques characteristic of screenplays; in the early 1920s, a series of works appeared ("Blue Flower" (青い花, Aoi Hana, 1921), "Ave Maria" (アヴェ・マリア, Ave Maria, 1922), "Residents of the port city" (港の人々, Minato no hitobito, 1926), "The Love of a fool" (痴人の愛, Chijin-no ai, 1924), etc.), filled with cinematic scenes, references to Hollywood actresses and Western films. The object of the study is female images in the writer's work, which were created with an eye to Hollywood actresses. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that the landmark essay "Present and Future cinema" was not translated into Russian and was not subjected to scientific analysis in Russian literary studies, respectively, the work of Tanizaki Junichiro was considered without taking into account the influence of cinema on him. The author of the article comes to the conclusion that the writer became not only one of the creators of the new female image "modan ga: ru" (from the English modern girl) – modern women copying the appearance and habits of Hollywood actresses – in Japanese culture, but also created a female face that penetrated the fabric of Japanese culture, influencing its reality.
