Abstract:The brain is one of the most important and complicated organs, but it is delicate and therefore needs to be protected from external forces. This makes the pecking behavior of the Woodpecker so impressive, as they are not known to sustain any brain injury due to their anatomical adaptations (a specialized beak, skull bone, and hyoid bone). However, the relationship between the morphology of the woodpecker head and its mechanical function against damage from daily pecking habits remains an open question. Aided by recent technical advancements, these questions can be explored by applying new materials science concepts of bioinspiration and bioexploration to identify adapted structures/materials in a design that results from millions of years of evolution. Two main features, including the beam‐like bar structure of the jugal bone acting as a main stress deflector and the high natural frequency of the skull bone of woodpeckers can teach two lessons for potential materials development as well as engineering applications: protection of a delicate internal organ occurs by redirection of the main stress pathway and a large mismatch of the natural frequencies between the skull and brain avoids resonance and reduces the overall load experienced by the brain. The relationship between the morphology of the woodpecker head and its mechanical function against damage from daily pecking habits is explored: the beam‐like bar structure of the jugal bone acts as a main stress deflector and the high natural frequency of the skull bone of woodpeckers allows to avoid resonance between the skull bone and brain.

Abstract:The biomechanics of woodpeckers have captivated researchers for decades. These birds' unique ability to withstand repeated impacts, seemingly without apparent harm, has piqued the interests of scientists and clinicians across multiple disciplines. Historical and recent studies have dissected the anatomical and physiological underpinnings of woodpeckers' protective mechanisms and sparked interest in the development of woodpecker‐inspired safety equipment. Despite the intuitive appeal of translating woodpecker adaptations into strategies for human traumatic brain injury (TBI) prevention, significant challenges hinder such innovation. Critical examinations reveal a lack of direct applicability of these findings to human TBI prevention, attributed to fundamental biological and mechanical dissimilarities between humans and woodpeckers. Additionally, some commercial endeavors attempting to capitalize on our fascination with woodpeckers are rooted in unsubstantiated claims about these birds. This paper explores the narrative surrounding woodpecker biomimicry, including its origins and history, and highlights the challenges of translating findings from unconventional animal models of TBI into effective human medical interventions.

Abstract:Woodpeckers are able to peck wood at great force and high speed without sustaining neck injury. Unlike woodpeckers, humans are prone to whiplash injury during vehicle collisions as a result of hypsokinesis and anteflexion of the head and neck. In this study, the anatomical structure of woodpecker head and neck was analyzed based on histological evaluation of anatomy and reverse modeling of vertebrae, and an atlas of the anatomy of the primary muscles of woodpecker head and neck was constructed. The anatomical structure of the head and neck soft tissue and morphology of the cervical vertebrae were compared among woodpeckers, humans, and hoopoes to assess the shock resistance of the woodpecker head and neck special structure. We found that the span of the woodpecker rectus capitis ventralis is smaller than that of the hoopoe, the woodpecker rectus capitis lateralis is a single muscle tissue and is not separated from the complexus, and the oblique muscles that connect the ventral process of the upper vertebrate and the lateral process of the lower vertebrate do not exist in woodpeckers. These differences result in woodpeckers having more restricted head and neck rotation compared with hoopoes. Thus, woodpeckers sacrifice some range of motion to ensure greater stability, thereby avoiding neck injury during pecking. In addition, the woodpecker splenius capitis, which connects the os supraoccipitale and the upper cervical vertebra, increases the stability of the cranial-cervical connection, and the absence of the cervical intervertebral disc leads to a reduced range of cervical rotation. These anatomical differences may explain why woodpeckers are less prone to neck injury than humans.

Abstract:Head impact injuries always cause severe diseases and deaths of human. In contrast, the woodpeckers are able to withstand fierce impact during pecking without brain damage. Several studies have reported about the mechanisms how woodpecker protects its brain, but the experimental result of the pecking impulse with the corresponding pecking process are still lacking. In this study, a trunk-like piezoelectric force sensor was used to measure the pecking impulse, and the corresponding pecking process was recorded by a high speed camera. Based on the results, there is negligible effect on the neck during the impact. After experiment, the woodpecker head was scanned by micro-Computed Tomography (micro-CT) and the pecking process was simulated by Material Point Method (MPM). The simulated impact impulse matches well with the experimental result. Using the simulation results, the energy transmission and the impact responses of the brain are discussed. Head Injury Criterion (HIC) and Average Resultant Acceleration (Ar) for woodpecker are proposed by scaling analyses to measure the possibilities of brain damage. Finally, the impact response under higher pecking velocities is analyzed using numerical simulation and the influence of the rhamphotheca layer in the beak is discussed. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. A Numerical Study of the Impact Resistance of Woodpecker’s Head

Abstract:Woodpecker strikes trunk every day and is able to resist brain impact injury at high deceleration, which is estimated to be as high as 1000g. In this study, the endoskeletal structures that protect woodpecker’s brain are investigated, especially its long and stiff hyoid bone, which is quite different to other birds. The material point method (MPM) is employed to reconstruct a three-dimensional simulation model of a woodpecker’s head, based on the micro-CT scanning images. In order to determine the damage of the impact in brain, the brain injury criteria of the shear stress in the midbrain of the brainstem (SSS) is adopted. The result indicates that the existing of hyoid bone approximately reduces the SSS by half.

Abstract:<span>Woodpeckers can withstand a fierce impact during pecking without any brain injury. Although directly involved in the whole pecking, the role of the jaw apparatus played in the impact-resistant process of woodpeckers is still not fully clear. We employed finite element analysis, impact tests <i>in vivo</i>, and post-traumatic brain anatomical observation to evaluate the protective function of the jaw apparatus. Forehead impact model and beaks impact without quadrate joints model were selected as control groups. The maximum impact force, the maximum stress of skull, the maximum strain and strain rate of brain were employed as the main parameters for comparison. The simulations showed that: the impact force, the skull's maximum von Mises stress, the brain's maximum principal strain and the principal strain rate increased by 72%, 24%, 148% and 106%, when the forehead rather than beaks were impacted; while they increased by 23%, 74%, 116% and 72% in the beaks impact without quadrate joints model. The results of simulations were supported by the anatomical observation: brain injury was not found after beak impact tests; serious hyperaemia, bleeding, and contra-coup injury were observed after forehead impact tests. This study discovered that the jaw apparatus acted as a cushion during the pecking process and the quadrate bone and joints changed the type of load and prolonged the acting time, which reduced the impact load acted on the skull and brain. This study would provide new inspirations to develop the device for brain protection, bio-inspired structure and material for energy-absorbing.</span>

Abstract:Prevention of brain injury in woodpeckers under high deceleration during the pecking process has been an intriguing biomechanical problem for a long time. Several studies have provided different explanations, but the function of the hyoid bone, one of the more interesting skeletal features of a woodpecker, still has not been fully explored. This paper studies the relationship between a woodpecker head's response to impact and the hyoid bone. Based on micro-CT scanning images, the material point method (MPM) is employed to simulate woodpecker's pecking process. The maximum shear stress in the brainstem (SSS) is adopted as an indicator of brain injury. The motion and deformation of the first cervical vertebra is found to be the main reason of the shear stress of the brain. Our study found that the existence of the hyoid bone reduces the SSS level, enhances the rigidity of the head, and suppresses the oscillation of the endoskeleton after impact. The mechanism is explained by a brief mechanical analysis while the influence of the material properties of the muscle is also discussed.

Abstract:Abstract The Night Parrot ( Pezoporus occidentalis ) is a rare, nocturnal parrot species that has largely escaped scientific investigation due to its behaviour and habitat preferences. Recent field studies have revealed some insights into Night Parrot behaviour, but nothing is known of its sensory abilities. Here, we used μCT scans of an intact Night Parrot specimen to determine if its visual system shares similarities with other nocturnal species. The endocast of the Night Parrot revealed relatively small optic lobes and optic foramina, especially compared with closely related grass parakeets, but no apparent differences in orbit dimensions. Our data suggests that the Night Parrot likely has lower visual acuity than most other parrots, including its congener, the Eastern Ground Parrot ( P. wallicus ). We propose that the visual system of the Night Parrot might represent a compromise between the need to see under low light conditions and the visual acuity required to detect predators, forage, and fly. Based on the endocast and optic foramen measurements, the Night Parrot fits into a common pattern of decreased retinal input to the optic lobes in birds that should be explored more thoroughly in extant and extinct species.

Abstract:The meninges and associated vasculature (MAV) play a crucial role in maintaining cerebral integrity and homeostasis. Recent advances in transcriptomic analysis have illuminated the significance of the MAV in understanding the complex physiological interactions at the interface between the skull and the brain after exposure to mechanical stress. To investigate how physiological responses may confer resilience against repetitive mechanical stress, we performed the first transcriptomic analysis of avian MAV tissues using the Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) and Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) as the comparison species. Our findings reveal divergences in gene expression profiles related to immune response, cellular stress management, and protein translation machinery. The male woodpeckers exhibit a tailored immune modulation strategy that potentially dampens neuroinflammation while preserving protective immunity. Overrepresented genes involved in cellular stress responses suggest enhanced mechanisms for mitigating damage and promoting repair. Additionally, the enrichment of translation‐associated pathways hints at increased capacity for protein turnover and cellular remodeling vital for recovery. Our study not only fills a critical gap in avian neurobiology but also lays the groundwork for research in comparative neuroprotection.

Abstract:The Black Woodpecker (Dryocopus martius L.) is both an ecosystem engineer and an umbrella species: it has the capacity to modify its environment through cavity excavation, which in turn favors a large range of species that depend on cavities but are unable to dig them themselves (secondary cavity nesters). However, the factors driving cavity excavation by the Black woodpecker at the tree scale remain poorly known. We analyzed the characteristics of trees bearing Black Woodpecker cavities to assess the bird's local habitat requirements and their conservation potential as habitat trees. We compared the traits and characteristics of trees bearing Black Woodpecker cavities (n = 60) and control trees (n = 56) in two managed lowland broadleave-dominated forests in France. We hypothesized that:(i)Cavity-trees would have lower wood density and display more conks of fungi than control-trees;(ii)The local environment of cavity-trees would be less crowded than those of the control trees. In particular, the first branch would be higher up, and their first neighboring tree would be further away from cavity-trees compared to control-trees;(iii)Cavity-trees would display a higher number of other woodpecker cavities and more saproxylic microhabitats than the control-trees.We validated most of our hypotheses and showed that cavity trees differed significantly from their control counterparts. Black Woodpeckers excavate trees with softer wood and higher first branches in a less crowded environment, thus minimizing both the energy dedicated to cavity excavation and predation risk. Second, cavity-trees bear more microhabitats and play a complementary umbrella role than what was documented before. They also appear a good candidate for habitat-tree conservation.In terms of biodiversity-friendly management measures, it would be beneficial to favor large isolated standing trees devoid of low branches (notably beech), especially in stands dominated by other tree species.

Abstract:What kind of tree should be preserved from logging for biodiversity conservation is a matter of debate. Large and old trees are potential candidates due to the structures they can bear, like cavities and other tree‐related microhabitats (TreMs). One of the most studied TreM is woodpecker‐made cavities, which, in addition to be breeding sites for primary cavity‐nesters, are often the main breeding sites for secondary cavity‐nesters, especially in managed forests. Therefore, understanding which trees woodpeckers select for cavities is relevant to forest management, especially in management regimes where individual trees are logged or spared, as in retention forestry. We used data from a forest inventory, TreM inventory and woodpecker counts in one‐hectare plots in the Black Forest (southwest Germany) to investigate which features make a retention tree suitable for woodpeckers. By employing a resource selection probability function, we tested several variables for their influence on the probability of tree choice by woodpeckers including altitude, tree species, TreM richness and abundance, diameter at breast height (DBH) and deviation from the mean DBH per plot. The results show that the probability of selection by woodpeckers does not correlate with individual tree diameter. Instead, the probability is driven mainly by the deviation from the mean DBH per plot. We were able to identify a relative size for the selection of trees indicating that woodpeckers prefer trees that are about 15–20 cm larger than the mean DBH per plot. Thereby, we argue, that using absolute diameter thresholds to select retention might not be the best management solution in the short‐term, as in managed forests woodpeckers might select sub‐optimal trees. Apparently, more knowledge concerning relative thresholds, as detected in our study, is required to improve our understanding of the potential ecological value of retention trees.

Abstract:Although woodpeckers are known to forage in decaying trees, their contribution to internal wood decay is not well known. In this sense, non-destructive techniques for structural wood degradation provide an opportunity to quantitatively assess the role of woodpeckers in tree decay. We used sonic tomography to test that the trunks of living trees pecked by Magellanic woodpeckers show pronounced decay, which accelerates under environmental conditions favorable to wood-decaying fungi. The internal decomposition of wood and its decay rate were measured over four years on 156 living southern beech (Nothofagus) trees belonging to four dominant species of southern temperate forests in northern Patagonia. Half of these live trees had woodpecker feeding holes, while the rest served as controls. The percentage of decayed wood, although not severely decayed, increased in sections with the presence of woodpecker holes, but was also influenced by temperatures and biophysical variables such as elevation and topography. The trunk sections with woodpecker holes and exposed to intensive foraging showed accelerated inter-annual decay. Woodpecker foraging activity interacted with vegetation characteristics, resulting in accelerated wood decay in forest sites with an open canopy and exposed to water stress. Thus, sonic tomography provided evidence of a close relationship between woodpeckers and internal wood decomposition, suggesting a positive feedback mechanism regulated by forest disturbance. The approach used here can be extended to gain insight into the influence of woodpeckers on tree decay and mortality in regions experiencing severe drought and forest degradation, such as northern Patagonia.
Examining the relationship between different naturally-occurring maxillary beak shapes and their ability to cause damage in commercial laying hens

Abstract:1. Using chicken models to avoid unnecessary harm, this study examined the relationship between naturally-occurring maxillary (top) beak shapes and their ability to cause pecking damage.2. A selection of 24 Lohmann Brown laying hens from a total population of 100 were sorted into two groups based on their maxillary beak shape, where 12 were classified as having sharp beaks (SB) and 12 as having blunt beaks (BB).3. All hens were recorded six times in a test pen which contained a chicken model (foam block covered with feathered chicken skin) and a video camera. During each test session, the number of feathers removed from the model, the change in skin and block weight (proxies for tissue damage) and the percentage of successful pecks (resulting in feather and/or tissue removal) were recorded.4. SB hens removed more feathers from the model and had a greater change in skin weight than BB hens. The mean number of pecks made at the model did not differ between the beak shape groups; however, SB hens had a greater percentage of successful pecks, resulting in feather and/or tissue removal, compared to BB hens.5. In conclusion, SB hens were more capable of removing feathers and causing damage. Birds performed more successful pecks resulting in feather and/or tissue removal as they gained experience pecking at the model.
Hole Life: Survival Patterns and Reuse of Cavities Made by the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos minor

Abstract:Primary cavity-producers such as woodpeckers produce nest sites for several other cavity-nesting animals and, thus, are often considered to be keystone species. However, the persistence and occupancy rates of cavities are rarely known and as such the real importance of primary cavity-producers also remains unclear. Cavities of the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos minor were monitored during their whole lifespan. The data include the annual availability and occupancy history of 106 cavities in a 170-km2 area in southern Finland during 19872018. The median survival time of a cavity was six years, but there were differences between the various forest types (range six to eight years). The median time for cavity fall was six years, and five years for cavity damage. Six bird species used the old cavities for breeding, with the Pied Flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca the dominant species accounting for 53% of all occupancies. The cavity reuse rate in the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker was 3.6%. The mean occupancy by secondary cavity-nesting birds in old cavities was 32%, with a range of 2936% across the various forest types. There was a significant negative correlation between annual occupancy rates and the age of the cavity. The first two years of a cavity were found to be the most important for total occupancy and 90% of occupancies took place before the median age of the cavities. The expected mean number of lifespan occupancies by secondary cavity-nesters for a single cavity was 1.97. The results indicate that new, fresh cavities are continuously needed for the secondary cavity-nesters that use Lesser Spotted Woodpecker cavities in their territories.

Abstract:Many birds and mammals respond to a heightened risk of predation, especially that associated with smaller group sizes, with an increase in vigilance. All interpretations of the way in which vigilance responds to changes in predation risk assume that animals feeding with their heads down (i.e. animals in a nonvigilant state) cannot detect approaching predators. We provide the first explicit test of this assumption by 'flying' a mounted hawk down a 15-m chute towards actively feeding, free-living, dark-eyed juncos, Junco hyemalis. Juncos were targeted individually for simulated attack when they had either a 'head-down' view up the chute, or a completely unobstructed view; a junco with a head-down view could see up the chute only when it lowered its head to feed. Juncos with an unobstructed view almost always detected the hawk at the maximum distance of 15 m. Juncos with a head-down view usually detected the attack at a distance of 10-15 m against a grey background, but detection distances were shorter when attacks occurred against a camouflaged background. The results demonstrate that these birds have a considerable ability to detect approaching predators even when not overtly vigilant, although their detection ability is greater when they raise their heads. Vigilance sequences, therefore, probably consist of bouts of low-quality detection (active feeding) interspersed with bouts of higher-quality detection (overt vigilance) that can only be accomplished at the expense of feeding. This realization has major implications for current interpretations of the vigilance group size effect and antipredator vigilance in general. Flight morphology and visual obstruction predict collision risk in birds

Abstract:ABSTRACT Collisions with buildings are a major source of mortality for wild birds, but these instantaneous events are difficult to observe. As a result, the mechanistic causes of collision mortality are poorly understood. Here, we evaluate whether sensory and biomechanical traits can explain why some species are more collision-prone than others. We first examined concordance of species vulnerability estimates across previous North American studies to determine whether these estimates are repeatable, and whether vulnerability is more similar among closely-related species. We found moderate concordance and phylogenetic signal, indicating that some bird species are consistently more collision-prone than others. We next tested whether morphological traits related to flight performance and sensory guidance explain these differences among species. Our comparative analysis shows that two traits primarily predict collision vulnerability within passerines: relative beak length and relative wing length. Small passerine species with relatively short wings and those with relatively long beaks are more collision-prone, suggesting that greater maneuverability and obstructed vision contribute to risk. Together, these findings can help inform mitigation strategies and predict which species will be most at risk in other regions.
Experimental playback of urban noise does not affect cognitive performance in captive Australian magpies

Abstract:Exposure of wildlife to anthropogenic noise is associated with disruptive effects. Research on this topic has focused on behavioural and physiological responses of animals to noise, with little work investigating links to cognitive function. Neurological processes that maintain cognitive performance can be impacted by stress and sleep disturbances. While sleep loss impairs cognitive performance in Australian magpies, it is unclear whether urban noise, which disrupts sleep, can impact cognition as well. To fill this gap, we explored how environmentally relevant urban noise affected the performance of wild-caught, city-living Australian magpies (Gymnorhina tibicen tyrannica) on a cognitive task battery including associative and reversal learning, inhibitory control, and spatial memory. Birds were housed and tested in a laboratory environment; sample sizes varied across tasks (n=7-9 birds). Tests were conducted over 4 weeks, during which all magpies were exposed to both an urban noise playback and a quiet control. Birds were presented with the entire test battery twice: following exposure to, and in the absence of, an anthropogenic noise playback; however, tests were always performed without noise (playback muted during testing). Magpies performed similarly in both treatments on all four tasks. We also found that prior experience with the associative learning task had a strong effect on performance, with birds performing better on their second round of trials. Like previous findings on Australian magpies tested on the same tasks in the wild under noisy conditions, we could not find any disruptive effects on cognitive performance in a controlled experimental laboratory setting.

Abstract:Prey species commonly assess predation risk based on acoustic signals, such as predator vocalizations or heterospecific alarm calls. The resulting risk-sensitive decision-making affects not only the behavior and life-history of individual prey, but also has far-reaching ecological consequences for population, community, and ecosystem dynamics. Although auditory risk recognition is ubiquitous in animals, it remains unclear how individuals gain the ability to recognize specific sounds as cues of a threat. Here, it has been shown that free-living birds (Wood Warblers Phylloscopus sibilatrix ) can learn to recognize unfamiliar, complex sounds (samples of punk rock songs) as cues of a threat from conspecifics holding adjacent territories during the spring breeding season. In a playback experiment, Wood Warblers initially ignored the unfamiliar sounds, but after repeatedly hearing that these sounds trigger alarm calling reaction of neighbors, most individuals showed an anti-predator response to them. Moreover, once learned soon after nestlings hatching, the anti-predator response of parents toward previously unfamiliar sounds was then retained over the entire nestlings rearing period. These results demonstrate that social learning via the association of unfamiliar sounds with known alarm signals enables the spread of anti-predator behavior across territory borders and provides a mechanism explaining the widespread abilities of animals to assess predation risk based on acoustic cues.

Abstract:In contrast to the vast majority of reptiles, the skulls of adult crown birds are characterized by a high degree of integration due to bone fusion, e.g., an ontogenetic event generating a net reduction in the number of bones. To understand this process in an evolutionary context, we investigate postnatal ontogenetic changes in the skulls of crown bird and non-avian theropods using anatomical network analysis (AnNA). Due to the greater number of bones and bone contacts, early juvenile crown birds have less integrated skulls, resembling their non-avian theropod ancestors, including Archaeopteryx lithographica and Ichthyornis dispars. Phylogenetic comparisons indicate that skull bone fusion and the resulting modular integration represent a peramorphosis (developmental exaggeration of the ancestral adult trait) that evolved late during avialan evolution, at the origin of crown-birds. Succeeding the general paedomorphic shape trend, the occurrence of an additional peramorphosis reflects the mosaic complexity of the avian skull evolution.

Abstract:Human-bird conflicts are in a critical state, involving economic losses such as agricultural losses, bird strikes on aircraft and avian influenza. Traditional technologies leveraging bird vision and hearing often lose their effectiveness over time as birds become habituated to these stimuli. To address these challenges, our study introduces a novel countermeasure technology based on neurophysiology. The human brain reacts to flickering light, which can cause symptoms like headaches, nausea, and dizziness. In extremely rare cases, it can even lead to epilepsy. This led us to consider the possibility that similar stimuli could be applicable to birds. In our experiments conducted during the day, we used long-range flashlights. White flickering light had no effect on bird escape behavior. However, when cellophane film was attached to the flashlights to restrict the wavelength, the emitted red light induced escape behavior in birds. Additionally, employing two types of flashlights to generate flickering red+blue or red+green lights elicited escape behavior. However, the blue and green combination proved to be less effective. These results are highly similar to those found in human neurophysiology, showing that red light alone and the combination of red and blue lights have the most significant impact on the brain. By measuring the flight initiation distance (FID) of birds, we found that illuminated areas had a significantly higher FID (137m) compared to non-illuminated areas (12m). These findings suggest that applying principles of human physiology to wildlife management can offer new solutions for bird damage control.
