Through a case study on JING YE SI,translation of childhood reading poems into nursery rhyme was confirmed to be feasible,through the approach,the translation should be focused on the lyrics,interesting and simplification of languages.

Taking examples mainly from Fifty Selected Children's Poetry in Ancient China: English Translation and Appreciation, this paper applied the Three-Level Criteria of poetry translation by Dr. Wang Feng to analyze several English translations of children’s object-chanting poetry in ancient China. In children’s object-chanting poetry translation, at the macro-level, the criterion is Harmony; at the middle level, the theory of “resemblance in style, sense and poetic realm”; at the micro-level, the criteria of Eight Beauties, centered on the beauty of emotions and images. Based on these analyses, this paper aims to test the validity of the "Three-Level Criteria of poetry translation" and hopes to guide and promote the theoretical and practical studies on the English translation of children’s poetry in ancient China from a new perspective.

Visualizing Chinese nursery rhymes in contemporary picturebooks: a multimodal perspective

Abstract:This study investigates how Chinese nursery rhymes are visualized in contemporary picturebooks from a multimodal perspective. The data for case analysis are selected from three Chinese rhyming picturebooks. Based on Jakobson’s (1959) typology of translation, this study regards picturebooks as multimodal texts and examines the adaptation of Chinese nursery rhymes into contemporary picturebooks as a process of intralingual and intersemiotic translations. It first analyzes the modern adaptations of traditional Chinese nursery rhymes in the verbal texts and then discusses the text-image interactions in picturebooks to explore the intersemiotic translation from the verbal to the visual. The research results indicate that the didactical function or political implication of traditional Chinese nursery rhymes is usually weakened or omitted in the intralingual translation, while more creative and amusing narrative rhymes are adapted to tailor for contemporary children’s hobbies and lifestyle. Besides, in the intersemiotic translation between texts and images in picturebooks, flexible and varied methods are employed according to different text-image interplays.

Abstract:Translating poetry is a very complex process. The paradoxical nature of untranslatability and translatability of poetry has been noticed by Hai An (The translation of poetry by the translator-cum-poet. Chinese Translator Journals 2005; 6:27-30), citing two famous scholars who are holding totally different opinions toward poetry translation. Robert Frost purports that 'poetry is what gets lost in translation', and Susan Bassnet advocates 'poetry is what we gain in translation'. However, the common ground between these two drastic opinions is that poetry translation is no more a repetition of the original works than a reproduction. There are both similarities and discrepancies between the translated works and the original pieces, or in another word: 'harmony in diversity'. This study aims to testify the above-mentioned proposal in a clear and objective manner, by comparing the original poetry texts (twenty randomly selected poems from Shakespearean sonnets) with their translated versions (the corresponding Chinese-translated versions by four different translators) from the perspective of vocabulary, word frequency distribution and part-of-speech (POS) frequency distribution. The results have corroborated the previous proposal: first, there is no significant difference in terms of vocabulary size and the text management styles between the translated poems and the original ones. Second, there is a significant difference in the word frequency distribution and POS frequency distribution between translated poems and the original ones. Third, there are also differences in the POS frequency distribution in poems translated by different authors. Furthermore, the translation style could distinguish professional translators from professional poets.

Abstract:Ancient Chinese poetry,a great spiritual wealth of the Chinese nation,the translation of which is a wonderful work in translation.Although suffering the controversy translated or not translated,the translation products are well known to the world.However,due to the translation courses of College English for no special requirements,the students majoring in non-English have no chance to appreciate the luster of translation versions' bloom.This research,is taking Ma Zhiyuan's "Tian Jing Sha·Qiu Si" as an example,basing on the importance and feasibility of the Translation teaching strategies in non-English majors as well as to intrigue student's learning enthusiasm in English,and aiming at the horizon of foreign cultural knowledge broadening and the purpose of popularizing the knowledge translation fulfilling.

Abstract:Phonological beauty is an important aesthetic feature of poetry. Reproduction of Chinese ancient poetry’s phonological beauty in English translation is of great significance. Professor Xu Yuanchong is an accomplished poetry translator who creatively reproduce original Chinese poems’ phonological beauty by employing various techniques such as alliteration, end rhyme, repetition, onomatopoeia, etc. This suggests that Chinese poetry’s phonological beauty can be reproduced in English translations although they realize their respective phonological beauties through their respective unique devices.

Abstract:Abstract There have been numerous classical Chinese poems translated into English since the 18th century, and many of them enjoy more than one version. This article discusses some prominent aspects of English translation of classical Chinese poetry, such as choice of words, syntax, metre and form, and allusion, based on comparative analysis of different versions. In the language of classical Chinese poetry, the prevailing monosyllabic word often tends to be polysemous and the grammatical function of a word more flexible. There are also many grammatical ellipses in its syntax. How does a translator choose the right word and decipher the sentence? In addition, classical Chinese poetry enjoys strict verse forms and rhyme schemes, and has a tradition to employ literary allusions. How can an English version achieve an equivalent effect? To solve such problems, translators in different times and places have made various experiments. But the swing of the pendulum seems not to go beyond the two extremes, rigidly imitating the original form or freely rewriting in another language. Under proper modulation, both methods may score some points. Résumé Il y a eu de nombreux poèmes classiques en langue chinoise traduits vers la langue anglaise depuis le 18ème siècle, et plusieurs d'entre eux ont plus d'une version. Cet article discute de certains aspects particuliers de la traduction anglaise de la poésie classique chinoise tels que le choix des mots, la syntaxe, la versification et la forme ainsi que les allusions, basées sur l'analyse comparative des différentes versions. Dans le langage de la poésie classique chinoise, le mot monosyllabique qui prévaut tend à avoir plusieurs significations et la fonction grammaticale du mot à être plus souple. Il existe aussi beaucoup d'ellipses grammaticales dans sa syntaxe. Comment un traducteur choisit-il le mot exact et décompose-t-il la phrase? En outre. la poésie classique chinoise nous offre une structure en vers et un agencement de rimes très strictes et possède une tradition de l'emploi d'allusions littéraires. Comment une version anglaise peut-elle atteindre un effet équivalent? Pour résoudre ce type de problèmes, les traducteurs à différentes époques et lieux ont effectué des expériences différentes. Mais le pendule ne balance pas en dehors des deux extrêmes, l'imitation rigide de la forme originale ou sa réécriture libre dans une autre langue. Selon la modulation appropriée, chacune des deux méthodes pourrait présenter certains avantages.

Abstract:Children's literature, as the name suggests, is a literary work created for children and teenagers, and it plays an important role in their growth process, accompanied by the functions of education, entertainment and cognitive formation. In recent years, China's translation research has been greatly improved, but the research on children's literature translation is still lacking. The translators of children's literature are mostly adults, but the audience is children. Under the guidance of aesthetic theory, the author, from the perspective of children's readers, puts children at the center, aiming to meet their reading needs. so, this paper explores the translation of children's literature on the basis of acceptance aesthetics from the original text-centered to reader-centered, and take the Su Nong's translation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and the original version as an example to explore the vocabulary, rhetoric and translation of magic spells. In terms of rhetoric, the author skillfully uses metaphors, rhymes, and parallelism techniques to make the translation reflect the stylistic style of the original text as much as possible, simultaneously increasing literary talent and bringing pleasant artistic enjoyment to children. This paper aims to popularize different perspectives and interpretations of children's literature translation for the general public, and better enable children to appreciate the aesthetics and charm of Chinese and English texts so that they can grow up healthily and develop comprehensively.

Jiangxi has been full of natural resources and outstanding people since ancient times, especially in the Song dynasty, when people of talent came forth in large numbers and created brilliant heritage of classic literary works for their offspring. Therefore, study on the translation of classics by JX native literati of Song Dynasty has very important academic value, application value and popularization meaning. Abstract:Traditional Chinese teaching often relies on domestic materials for students' understanding of English-speaking countries, limiting exploration of Western concepts and hindering the recognition of English as a foreign language. Recognizing the influence of ancient Greek civilization on Western culture, this article advocates for improving English communication skills through the translation of ancient Greek classics. It emphasizes the importance of this approach in gaining a deeper understanding of Western expressions and highlights the practical value of such translations. Additionally, the article underscores the role of learning classic English translation appreciation in enhancing language proficiency, literary appreciation, cross-cultural communication, and cultural confidence. Lastly, it suggests that employing the teaching method of classic translation can effectively support students' vocabulary learning, memory, and understanding of special meanings in cross-cultural contexts, fostering natural experiences of cultural differences in language and text conversions and promoting cross-cultural awareness.

Abstract:Gen Niao is a short story crafted by Cao Wenxuan, a distinguished contemporary writer in the realm of children’s literature. This story chronicles the maturation journey of a young protagonist named Gen Niao. Currently, there is no published translated edition of this book. This paper takes Gen Niao as an example to primarily explore the English translation of Chinese children’s literature. As international cultural exchanges deepen, English translation of contemporary Chinese children’s literature assumes paramount significance in facilitating cultural outreach. Due to the cultural and linguistic disparities between Chinese and English, translators often find it challenging to accurately and vividly convey the precise connotations of the source text, especially when the target audience is children. Hence, in order to convey the meaning of the source language as faithfully as possible, the author tackles the translation process from two aspects: lexical choices and syntactic structures. Based on the strategies of domestication and foreignization proposed by Venuti, the author primarily employs a strategy of domestication, supplemented by occasional foreignization to translate the selected passages, aiming to maintain fidelity to the original while ensuring readability for the target audience. By exploring strategies for translating Chinese children’s literature into English, this research encapsulates reflections and analyses concerning the practice of translating children’s literature, aiming to discover methods that can enhance the international impact of translated works and propel Chinese children’s literature towards global recognition.

Abstract:Most children like and enjoy singing songs. It can be used as one of materials for foreign language learning. Using nursery rhymes in the classroom can be a great break from following a set curriculum . This study aims to know the way to acquaint English to young learners through nursery rhymes, to identify the criteria of nursery rhymes that suits on the students, and to know the strengths and challenges in acquainting English to young learners through nursery rhymes at Playgroup. Qualitative research was employed to conduct this study. To collect the data, some techniques were carried out namely observation, interview, and documentation. The results revealed that the acquaintance of young learners English through nursery rhymes considers the content; students’ readiness, and class atmosphere, the nursery rhymes must teach the character education; the strengths in acquainting English to young learners through nursery rhymes at Halimatus Sa’diyah playgroup are the commitment among the manager/organizers, teachers and parents and the high awareness that English is important. And, the challenges are low teacher’s pedagogical competency, facilities, curriculum/material, and non-English school or living environment.

Abstract:The Book of Songs, known as the Shijing in Chinese, holds a lofty position and exerts a profound influence in the history of Chinese literature, establishing a fine tradition for Chinese poetry. Xu Yuanchong, a renowned translator in China, has translated The Book of Songs into the most widely circulated version in Chinese. In his translation practice, there is a theory called the "Three Aesthetics Theory" that governs the overall process, namely the aesthetics of content, phonetics and form. Currently, most of the research in the field of translation studies focuses on the "aesthetics of content" in Xu's translation, considering it more important than the "aesthetics of phonetics" and the "aesthetics of form," and playing a decisive role in the translation. However, the authors have noticed the countervailing effects of sound and rhyme on content and connotation, and therefore, conducted a related research on the effect of phonetics on the expression of content in the translated version of The Book of Songs (Shijing). After further study and researches, the authors have discovered that the role of sound and rhyme in poetry is not limited to the experience of beauty; the variations in sound and rhyme also affect the emotions conveyed in the poem, expressing the ups and downs of emotions. At the same time, there may be instances where excessive pursuit of sound and rhyme sacrifices the expression of content.

Abstract:MAKNA DAN BENTUK DALAM PENERJEMAHAN LAGU-LAGU ANAK AbstractTranslating nursery rhymes is not an easy task. The problems of equivalence in meaning and form as well as in the harmony between the translated lyrics and the music are aspects that need to be considered by the translators. By considering nursery rhyme lyric as poetry text, this research analyzes the equivalence of meaning and form in nursery rhymes translation. This research focuses on five nursery rhymes. The meaning analysis was done by conducting particular procedures on translation quality assessment. Meanwhile, the analysis of the form was conducted by comparing the two versions of the nursery rhymes focusing on the sound values. From the equivalence of meaning, the result shows that most nursery rhymes are translated less accurately. On the other hand, the finding of the equivalence in form shows that most of the auditory devices are deleted while most of the rhymes are shifted. This research is expected to give a contribution to song translation activities especially those involving children as the target listeners. Masalah kesepadanan makna dan bentuk, serta harmonisasi antara lirik terjemahan dan musik adalah aspek-aspek yang harus dipertimbangkan oleh penerjemah. Dengan mempertimbangkan lirik lagu anak sebagai teks puisi, penelitian ini menganalisis kesepadanan antara makna dan bentuk dalam terjemahan lagu anak. Dengan menggunakan teknik sampling, penelitian ini berfokus kepada lima lagu anak. Analisis makna dilakukan dengan prosedur penelitian kualitas terjemahan sedangkan analisis bentuk dilakukan dengan membandingkan dua versi lagu anak dengan fokus kepada sound values (bunyi). Analisis kesepadanan makna menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar lagu anak diterjemahkan dengan kurang akurat. Dari segi bentuk, sebagian besar auditory devices dihapus sedangkan sebagian besar rima bergeser. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi terhadap penerjemahan lagu khususnya yang melibatkan anak-anak sebagai pendengar sasaran. Abstract:With the development of globalization and the deepening of sino-foreign cultural exchanges, young readers and their parents in China are calling for better translations of children's literature to meet the needs of children in developing language, and reading habits, opening up horizons, experiencing a foreign culture. As an essential indicator for judging the quality of translation, readability is directly related to whether children can accept the translations. Some points have been reflected here on improving the readability of children's literature translations from four levels of phonetics, lexis, sentences, and discourse according to the developmental characteristics of children and their preferences of reading.

Abstract:When translating poetry, the unique literary genre poses a significant challenge to the translator’s ability. The work of translating English poems into Chinese has a history of 20 years in China. In this paper, the author collected and studied the strategies used in the translation of English poetry into Chinese from 2014 to 2024, focusing on solving the persistent confusion surrounding key terms such as “translation strategy”, “translation method” and “translation technique”. This study aims to clarify these structures and examine their practical significance in the context of real translation. In the decision-making process of translation strategy selection, translators need to balance cultural and aesthetic expectations with the practical application of these strategies. In this paper, a systematic literature review method is adopted as the methodology, and the results emphasize the importance of balancing domestication and foreignization strategies to ensure translation fidelity and emotional resonance. In addition, the study summarizes seven key research gaps, including the need for more empirical research to verify the effectiveness of these strategies in different contexts. This paper emphasizes the value of continuous academic discussion in improving translation practice, respecting both the original text and the nuances of regional languages, thereby contributing to a richer and more effective exchange of Chinese-English literature.

Abstract:As an important part of children’s literature, nursery rhymes are the earliest literary styles that children are exposed to after they are born. They can reflect objective things, living customs and national culture. Through the comparison of animal images in Chinese and English classic nursery rhymes, this paper concludes that there are cultural differences in animal images in nursery rhymes. Some animal images have similar cultural connotations in Chinese culture and English culture, while some animal images have different cultural connotations.

Abstract:This study carried out a stylistic analysis of primary school nursery rhymes and their implications on reading skills of pupils. The study utilized descriptive research design where five nursery rhymes were randomly selected from a nursery rhyme textbook. The selected nursery rhymes were based on the popularity of the rhymes among the primary school children. The data obtained from the study was analyzed stylistically using the levels of stylistic analysis which include graphology, phonology, lexical and syntactic levels. Findings demonstrate that all the words choice in nursery rhymes is deliberately simpler so that the readers may understand the theme and the message of the rhymes. The rhymes are often based on simple shorter sentences, although long sentences can occur as well. Based on the age of the children, information is presented in a simple manner. The stings of sentences are not too long for the children to comprehend and the phrases and sentences are logically linked together to create a cohesive and perfect rhythm. The occurrence of rhyming especially end rhymes facilitate children’s learning faculty as they are reading the rhymes through the repetition of similar sounding words at the ending of a verse or line. This creates a mnemonic situation in which it is easier for the readers to memorise their reading through smooth and pleasurable reading experience.
Translation Skills of Children’s Literature from the Perspective of Reception Theory: A Case Study of Bronze and Sunflower

Abstract:With the development of society and the prosperity of Chinese literature, as a part of China’s soft power, Chinese chil-dren literature is faced with the problem of international dissemination. The English version of Cao Wenxuan’s Bronze and Sunflower won Hans Christian Andersen Award, the top award of children’s literature, which is a successful example of such dissemina-tion. Therefore, the Chinese-English translation skills employed are worth studying. This paper aims to analyze the skills used to inthe translation of short clauses, reiterative locution, simile, parallelism and dingzhen from the perspective of reception theory. It isfound that by using such translation skills as omission, alliteration, repetition of prepositions and pronouns, and literal translation,the translator preserves and recreates the effect of the original text in ways that are more acceptable and idiomatic for the targetreader.
