Abstract:Zygnematophyceae are a class of freshwater green algae with a unique particularity: they are the closest living relatives of land plants. Both lineages separated about 550 million years ago. A first study recently published in Nature Genetics analyses the genomes of four strains of multicellular Zygnema algae. Comparison with other plant and algal genomes elucidates the evolutionary changes that have occurred, for example in enzymes involved in cell wall building and restructuring. Additionally, co-expression networks indicate that some of the gene modules that made gradual terrestrialization possible, such as gene networks linked to adaptation to environmental stresses, were already present in the common ancestor. That probably made it an ideal pre-adapted candidate for the conquest of dry lands. A second study published in Nature, and spearheaded by researchers from the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, focuses on what happened next: the expansion of angiosperms, which today are the dominant group of land plants and contain most of the crops that are feeding us. In this case the researchers sequenced a standard panel of 353 nuclear genes from several thousands of species, including samples from botanical collections across the world, representing an unprecedented broad and comprehensive sampling of extant flowering plants, including all orders and families. The reconstructed phylogenetic tree was time-calibrated with fossils, to anchor it into the well-defined geological periods. The data shows an early burst of diversification starting just before the boundary between late Jurassic and early Cretaceous, with four out of five extant angiosperm orders originating during that period. Then diversification continued at a much slower rate for a long time, during which dinosaurs disappeared, which didn't seem to concern plants very much. Finally, a second and more recent peak of diversification appeared, during the Cenozoic era, linked to a parallel increase in insect pollinator diversity, and likely promoted by global climatic cooling.
