Abstract:Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960) is of prime importance for the horror genre since Hitchcock places horror in settings of everyday life. It is also important for its narrative structure along with the editing of the shower scene, God’s eye view shots of staircase scenes that limit the view of the audience, the use of voice over for making meaning, altering the identification of the viewer, the psychological aspect and score... The movie has had an unignorable effect on cinema with its sequels, prequel, a documentary about the movie, an avant-garde movie which is a replica, an appropriation of Psycho presented as an art installation, a semibiographic movie on the process of producing the movie, a murder scene that became a cliché as well as borrowings or references in other movies and countless books, reviews and articles about it. Psycho is a favorite subject of the studies which primarily analyze its narrative, film score, and psychoanalysis. This study, choosing a restricted angle, aims to analyze the gaze and voice over with regard to the relationship between characters and places. With this aim the embodied metaphors which are closely linked with ‘the eye’ in the movie are also researched. The look, the gaze and the metaphors of the eye contribute greatly to the aesthetics and psychology of the movie. The use of the gaze and voice over for making meaning to reflect the psychological states of the characters is researched thoroughly. In accordance with this purpose, the techniques and elements which are relevant to this subject are mentioned including mise-en-scéne, cinematography, film setting and decor. Aynı zamanda anlatı yapısının yanı sıra duş sahnesinin kurgusu, merdiven sahnelerinin izleyicinin görüşünü kısıtlayan tanrı-gözü açısıyla çekimleri, dışsesin anlam yaratmadaki kullanımı, izleyici özdeşleşmesinin değişimi, psikolojik yönü ve film müziği gibi unsurlar ile de önemli bir yere sahiptir. Film, diğer filmlerdeki alıntılar ve göndermelerin yanısıra devam filmleri, öncesini anlatan bir dizi, hakkındaki bir belgesel, enstalasyon olarak sergilenmiş bir kopya olan temellük bir avangard film, filmin yapım sürecini konu edinen yarı biyografik bir film, cinayet sahnesinin klişe olması, hakkındaki sayısız kitap, inceleme ve makale ile sinema alanında gözardı edilemez bir etkiye sahiptir. Psycho filmi öncelikle anlatı yapısı, film müziği ve psikanaliz gibi konularda inceleyen çalışmalar için elverişli bir filmdir. Bu çalışma, kısıtlı bir tema seçerek, filmde karakterlerin mekanlarla ilişkisiyle bağlantılı olarak bakış ve dış ses kullanımını çözümlemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu amaçla filmdeki ‘göz’ ile yakın ilişkili olan metaforlar da irdelenmiştir. Bakış ve dış sesin karakterlerin psikolojik durumlarını yansıtmak amacıyla anlam yaratmada ne şekilde kullanıldığı irdelenmiştir. Bu amaçla, mizansen, görüntü yönetmenliği, film seti ve dekor gibi unsurları kapsayacak biçimde konuyla bağlantılı kullanılan yöntem ve unsurlara değinilmiştir. Abstract:For decades, films across the world have entertained people and affected their attitudes regarding certain issues and conditions. Documentary films have been used by governments in different parts of the world to educate the general public and promote health and prevent the spread of disease as part of public health programs. Psychiatry as a branch of medicine like the rest of medicine continues to develop. With an increasing awareness among the general population and popularity of films showing various aspects of mental illnesses on the rise, educators and teachers are turning their attention to using films for education of medical students and psychiatric trainees. Although films may be stereotypical and prejudiced, they can be used successfully in teaching psychiatry trainees. In this paper, development of a movie club and its use are described and suggestions made to improve the use of films in this process.

Abstract:Background: In 1945 the artist and art collector J. Dubuffet coined the term Art brut for original works by psychiatric inmates that had been created outside of traditions and art movements. In the following decades these works were at the center of negotiation processes in which not only psychiatrists but also exhibition organizers, gallery owners etc. increasingly became involved. Objective: Based on the evaluation of four exemplary pairs of psychiatrists and artist patients (H. Müller-Suur-P. Goesch; M. in der Beeck-E. Spießbach; J. Porret-Forel-A. Corbaz; L. Navratil-R. Limberger), this study explores the field of tension between art and psychiatry after 1945. Material and methods: The results of the subproject "Normal#Crazy Art. Works from a Psychiatric Context between Diagnostics and Aesthetics after 1945" of the German Research Foundation (DFG) research group "Normal#Crazy" (FOR 3031) are based on the evaluation of archival material, estates, interviews with contemporary witnesses and contemporary media. Results: It is shown that different attitudes of the psychiatrists towards "their" artist patients strongly influenced their entry into the art world. In this context, impulses from beyond psychiatry were important in order to expand purely diagnostic views of the works with other approaches. Discussion: The renewed interest in the individual creativity of patients after 1945 can be understood as a reaction to their dehumanization under fascism and National Socialism; however, the focus on the pathologized personality of artist patients could obscure alternative perspectives on their art, just as the disposal of their works by psychiatrists could hinder their dissemination.

Abstract:Introduction Regular practice of mindfulness has proven effectiveness in the treatment of affective disorders (Cash and Whittingham, 2010), increases the level of satisfaction in life (Brown and Ryan, 2003), as well as the level of self-esteem (Rasmussen & Pidgeon, 2010). Using "Mulholland Drive" (2001) by David Lynch as an example, we will prove that transcendental cinema, through the unique slow character, the means of expression used and the emphasis placed on the metaphysical experiences of the characters, in which D. Lynch forces us to participate, makes the screening similar to a meditation session. Objectives The aim of this work is to indicate a new direction of research, linking cinema with psychoanalysis, philosophy and psychiatry and proving that a screening of transcendental cinema can be treated as a mindfulness meditation session. Methods This work is based on the film "Mulholland Drive" by D. Lynch and the understanding of transcendental cinema according to Paul Schrader. Using J. Kabat Zinn's scientific publications, we analyze cinema in terms of a meditation session and using the approach of first generation analysts (S. Freud, C. Gustav Jung, S. Spielrein) in terms of a therapeutic process based on psychoanalysis. Results "Mulholland Drive" subjects the protagonist to a therapy session: the woman lives guided by the unconscious, a dream that seems real and finally at the end she reaches her own true self. On screen, she undergoes successfully the therapeutic process. The transcendental cinema focuses on metaphysical sensations, has elongated scenes, creates dead time, viewer remains in the frame even when the character comes out of it, and strives for kenosis - the reduction of sensory experience. All of these qualities are crucial in mindfuless: focusing on emotions and feelings experienced in the moment, non-judgmental and calmly concentrating on single stimuli. This similarity allows us to treat a transcendental film show in the category of a meditation session. Conclusions Recognizing the similarity between the philosophy of mindfulness and transcendental cinema allows us to conclude that a film screening enriches us not only with knowledge about disorders and the therapeutic process, but is in itself a supportive element for mental health. Our work is the first to analyze cinema in the context of mindfulness meditation. In our opinion, culture should be more widely analyzed as a tool to support mental health and the development of one's own identity. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

Abstract:This article casts light on the origins of infant psychiatry by taking a new, interdisciplinary approach to the work of psychoanalyst and film-maker René Spitz. Focusing on his observations of babies living in orphanages, it argues that by undertaking the difficult, and sometimes paradoxical, task of capturing emotional absence and psychological fragmentation on film, Spitz created a new and influential theory of the infant psyche. It considers how this vision of an indeterminate and potentially ‘empty’ infant subject was generated by the institutional care which he sought to undermine. The particular ways in which the institution emerges as a problem and opportunity for child analysts after World War II propelled Spitz into a surprising range of post-war debates on cultural politics. He is revealed as embedded in a complex, interdisciplinary web of discourse, practices and observational strategies, and at the centre of post-war visual research into the environmental origins of mental illness.

Abstract:The amount of criticism which overshadows Freudian concepts has never reduced the relevance it carries in the assessment of human inscape. It successfully explains the reasons behind the complexities of human behaviour. Ian McEwan, who is known for his vivid, picturesque, and striking narrative style, is a prodigy in exploring the human psyche. His prestigious work Atonement remarkably stands out in its portrayal of the interior realms and unpredictable workings of the socially conscious. This paper attempts a detailed study of the behavioural patterns of the characters and the role of the unconscious in controlling them. This study concludes that, though humans are the victims of the unconscious trauma, a positive sublimation can unquestionably save individuals and make them fit for society.
Hollywood portrayals of child and adolescent mental health treatment: implications for clinical practice

Abstract:This article examines the portrayals and myths of child and adolescent psychiatry relevant to the current practitioner. Although behavioral and emotional problems abound onscreen, the formal diagnosis of youth mental illness is uneven and rare. Common myths of brainwashing, incarceration, parent blame, parent supplantation, violence, and evil are explored, with current commercial examples of each. The impact of these portrayals on young patients, peers, parents, and the public at large are examined through the prevalence of different stereotypes across different genres more likely viewed by different ages. Positive and negative depictions of illness and treatment are identified for education and awareness, and the authors provide advice for using Hollywood films successfully as a helpful intervention in the mental health treatment of children and adolescents.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: During the 20th century, psychiatry began to use the cinema as didactic-pedagogical help resource in the study of psychopathology. The Films of Alfred Hitchcock usually present as main themes mental disorders and the psychoanalysis. However, these films were not created with academic goal and it is natural that there are distortions. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the importance of Hitchcock films as didactic resource in the study of psychopathology, identify possible distortions and seek to justify them on the basis of the historical context. METHODOLOGY: The abstracts of the 53 feature-length films of the director were read and deleted the movies that did not have the mental disorder as a central theme; they were dumb; or those who had only the antisocial personality disorder. It was performed a narrative review. RESULTS: Six films were selected through an intentional sampling. When he speaks of the Heart (1945) shows a picture of amnesia with dissociative fugue. The psychoanalysis is represented in a very superficial. The Indiscreet (1954) describes a voyeuristic disorder and should not be indicated. The Wrong Man (1956) depicts a severe depressive episode with psychotic symptoms. A body that falls (1958) presents the themes of specific phobia of height and the acute stress disorder. Psychosis (1960) represents a framework of dissociative identity disorder, but the scenes of violence may cause a negative view of the mentally ill. Marnie (1964) has as themes the specific phobia and sexual aversion disorder. The psychoanalysis is presented in distorted form and caricature. CONCLUSION: The films directed by Alfred Hitchcock can be useful in the study of psychiatry and should be considered the distortions that can worsen the stigma.
The Study of Foucault’s “The Composition of Forces” in Shutter Island (2003)

Abstract:The American author Dennis Lehane, published his masterpiece Shutter Island in 2003. In his psychological novel, alongside the thrilling themes of crime and crisis, a heavy undercurrent of power and punishment grabs reader's attention. From a literary philosophical side, Foucauldian notions of madness, “the composition of forces” upon the mentally disturbed patients, could captivate a critic’s attention. It is therefore, beneficial to analyze the Dissociative Personality Disorder of the protagonist of the novel. The present study aims to investigate “the composition of forces” in Shutter Island (2003) based on Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish (1975). Foucault in his book scrutinizes “the composition of forces,” how individuals and bodies are placed, and redirected in larger machines, like choosing good soldiers and training them for army. Among Foucault’s ideas, “the composition of forces” has been considered as one of the primary and essential tools of maintaining the disciplinary power. The study concludes that the main character of the novel shows resistance and denial through his process of treatment. In fact, his Dissociative Identity Disorder is a manifestation of the way he wants to escape from the superintending forces of the disciplinary power.

Abstract:This special issue considers the significance of film to the establishment and development of scientific approaches to the mind. Bonnie Evans explores how the origins of film technologies in 1895 in France encouraged a series of innovative collaborations, influencing both psychological theorisation, and new filming techniques. Jeremy Blatter explains how Harvard psychologist Hugo Münsterberg created early films specifically designed to engage audiences using psychological tactics. Scott Curtis' article examines how Yale psychologist Arnold Gesell was able to extract scientific data from a film. Felix Rietmann's article explores a collection of infant observation films from the 1930s and 1960s and how they developed unique narratives of mothers' engagement with their children that did not necessarily match up with dominant scientific theories. Janet Harbord's article considers how a trilogy of films made at the Maudsley Hospital in the 1950s engaged with innovative film-making techniques that captured behaviour as discrete units. Seth Watter further examines how William S. Condon's use of the unique technology of the Bell and Howell 173BD projector in the 1960s created new understandings of human behaviour that could not have been predicted in advance, and which were highly influenced by the technology itself. Finally, Des O'Rawe explores how radical approaches in both anti-psychiatry, and documentary film-making in the 1960s created new opportunities for audiences to engage with different psychological states. All of these developments in film and psychology continue to influence understandings in both these fields to the present day.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between body image and suicidal tendencies in anorexia nervosa (AN).METHODS: Three groups of hospitalized female adolescents--nonsuicidal AN, suicidal psychiatric and nonsuicidal psychiatric patients, as well as a community control group with no psychiatric disturbances were compared with regard to suicidal tendencies (in the form of attitudes to life and death), body image and experience, depression and anxiety.RESULTS: The AN and suicidal patients showed less attraction to but more repulsion by life, and more attraction to and less repulsion by death compared with the other two groups. The AN and suicidal patients were also different from either one or both control groups in showing more negative attitudes and feelings towards their bodies, lower sensitivity to body clues, less body control, and elevated depression and anxiety. These between-group differences in suicidal tendencies were retained after controlling for age, body mass index, the different body image dimensions, anxiety and depression.CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that female AN inpatients with no evidence of overt suicidal behavior demonstrate elevated suicidal tendencies that are similar to those of suicidal psychiatric inpatients. These self-destructive tendencies are highly associated with a pervasive sense of disturbance of body image and experience.
