Abstract:Harnessing natural solutions to mitigate climate change requires an understanding of carbon fixation, flux, and sequestration across ocean habitats. Recent studies have suggested that exported seaweed particulate organic carbon is stored within soft-sediment systems. However, very little is known about how seaweed detritus disperses from coastlines, or where it may enter seabed carbon stores, where it could become the target of conservation efforts. Here, focusing on regionally dominant seaweed species, we surveyed environmental DNA (eDNA) from natural coastal sediments, and studied their connectivity to seaweed habitats using a particle tracking model parameterized to reproduce seaweed detritus dispersal behavior based on laboratory observations of seaweed fragment degradation and sinking. Experiments showed that seaweed detritus density changed over time, differently across species. This, in turn, modified distances traveled by released fragments until they reached the seabed for the first time, during model simulations. Dispersal pathways connected detritus from the shore to the open ocean but, importantly, also to coastal sediments, and this was reflected by field eDNA evidence. Dispersion pathways were also affected by hydrodynamic conditions, varying in space and time. Both the properties and timing of released detritus, individual to each macroalgal population, and short-term near-seabed and medium-term water-column transport pathways, are thus seemingly important in determining the connectivity between seaweed habitats and potential sedimentary sinks. Studies such as this one, supported by further field verification of sedimentary carbon sequestration rates and source partitioning, are still needed to help quantify the role of seaweed in the ocean carbon cycle. Such studies will provide vital evidence to inform on the potential need to develop blue carbon conservation mechanisms, beyond wetlands.
Sedimentary carbon on the continental shelf: Emerging capabilities and research priorities for Blue Carbon

Abstract:Continental shelf sediments store large amounts of organic carbon. Protecting this carbon from release back into the marine system and managing the marine environment to maximize its rate of accumulation could both play a role in mitigating climate change. For these reasons, in the context of an expanding "Blue Carbon" concept, research interest in the quantity and vulnerability of carbon stored in continental shelf, slope, and deep ocean sediments is increasing. In these systems, carbon storage is physically distant from carbon sources, altered between source and sink, and disturbed by anthropogenic activities. The methodological approaches needed to obtain the evidence to assess shelf sea sediment carbon manageability and vulnerability within an evolving blue carbon framework cannot be transferred directly from those applied in coastal vegetated "traditional" blue carbon habitats. We present a toolbox of methods which can be applied in marine sediments to provide the evidence needed to establish where and when marine carbon in offshore sediments can contribute to climate mitigation, focusing on continental shelf sediments. These methods are discussed in the context of the marine carbon cycle and how they provide evidence on: (i) stock: how much carbon is there and how is it distributed? (ii) accumulation: how rapidly is carbon being added or removed? and (iii) anthropogenic pressures: is carbon stock and/or accumulation vulnerable to manageable human activities? Our toolbox provides a starting point to inform choice of techniques for future studies alongside consideration of their specific research questions and available resources. Where possible, a stepwise approach to analyses should be applied in which initial parameters are analysed to inform which samples, if any, will provide information of interest from more resource-intensive analyses. As studies increasingly address the knowledge gaps around continental shelf carbon stocks and accumulation – through both sampling and modelling – the management of this carbon with respect to human pressures will become the key question for understanding where it fits within the blue carbon framework and within the climate mitigation discourse.

Blue carbon: past, present and future, with emphasis on macroalgae

Abstract:Blue carbon did not originally include macroalgal ecosystems; however evidence is mounting that macroalgal ecosystems function in marine carbon sequestration. The great majority of present day marine macroalgal net primary productivity (NPP) involves haptophytic algae on eroding shores. For these organisms the long-term storage of particulate organic carbon involves export from the site of production of biomass that has evaded parasites and grazers, and that some of the exported biomass is sedimented and stored rather than being mineralized en route by detritivores (microbes and fauna). Export from eroding shores, and subsequent storage, of haptophytic marine macroalgal particulate organic carbon could have started by 1.6 Ga. Storage on depositing shores close to the site of NPP by rhizophytic macroalgae and then by rhizophytic coastal seagrasses, tidal marshes and mangroves began not less than 209 Ma ago. Future increases in surface ocean temperatures may bring tropical marine macroalgae to their upper temperature limit, while temperate marine macroalgae will migrate poleward, in both cases assuming that temperature increases faster than genetic adaptation to higher temperature. Increased CO 2 in the surface ocean will generally favour uncalcified over calcified marine macroalgae. This results in decreased CO 2 release from decreased calcification, as well as decreased ballasting by CaCO 3 of exported particulate organic carbon resulting in decreasing sedimentation. While much more work is needed, the available information suggests that macroalgae play a significant role in marine organic carbon storage.

Abstract:The conservation, restoration, and improved management of terrestrial forests significantly contributes to mitigate climate change and its impacts, as well as providing numerous co‐benefits. The pressing need to reduce emissions and increase carbon removal from the atmosphere is now also leading to the development of natural climate solutions in the ocean. Interest in the carbon sequestration potential of underwater macroalgal forests is growing rapidly among policy, conservation, and corporate sectors. Yet, our understanding of whether carbon sequestration from macroalgal forests can lead to tangible climate change mitigation remains severely limited, hampering their inclusion in international policy or carbon finance frameworks. Here, we examine the results of over 180 publications to synthesise evidence regarding macroalgal forest carbon sequestration potential. We show that research efforts on macroalgae carbon sequestration are heavily skewed towards particulate organic carbon (POC) pathways (77% of data publications), and that carbon fixation is the most studied flux (55%). Fluxes leading directly to carbon sequestration (e.g. carbon export or burial in marine sediments) remain poorly resolved, likely hindering regional or country‐level assessments of carbon sequestration potential, which are only available from 17 of the 150 countries where macroalgal forests occur. To solve this issue, we present a framework to categorize coastlines according to their carbon sequestration potential. Finally, we review the multiple avenues through which this sequestration can translate into climate change mitigation capacity, which largely depends on whether management interventions can increase carbon removal above a natural baseline or avoid further carbon emissions. We find that conservation, restoration and afforestation interventions on macroalgal forests can potentially lead to carbon removal in the order of 10's of Tg C globally. Although this is lower than current estimates of natural sequestration value of all macroalgal habitats (61–268 Tg C year−1), it suggests that macroalgal forests could add to the total mitigation potential of coastal blue carbon ecosystems, and offer valuable mitigation opportunities in polar and temperate areas where blue carbon mitigation is currently low. Operationalizing that potential will necessitate the development of models that reliably estimate the proportion of production sequestered, improvements in macroalgae carbon fingerprinting techniques, and a rethinking of carbon accounting methodologies. The ocean provides major opportunities to mitigate and adapt to climate change, and the largest coastal vegetated habitat on Earth should not be ignored simply because it does not fit into existing frameworks.

Abstract:Abstract Macroalgae (seaweeds) are drawing interest as potential tools for climate mitigation within a burgeoning blue carbon agenda. With the high rates of net primary productivity, they are one of the main carbon sinks in the global ocean, both as biomass standing stock and as vectors of carbon export through detritus pathways. When coupled with their intrinsic ecological value, their contribution to coastal economies, and their current and future scope for aquaculture production, it is perhaps unsurprising that macroalgae have become a focus for nature-based carbon sequestration. However, the research community must guard against the hyperbole that is beginning to permeate the conversation, such as that which beset the microalgae biofuel movement. Macroalgae undoubtedly have a role to play in combating carbon pollution, and perhaps before significant investment is committed to ramping up macroalgae aquaculture, a more pragmatic view of its contribution to natural capital is justified. This article takes an objective look at the capacity for macroalgae to fill a global carbon sequestration niche, both as managed natural carbon pools and as deployable carbon capture assets.
Climate‐driven shifts in kelp forest composition reduce carbon sequestration potential

Abstract:The potential contribution of kelp forests to blue carbon sinks is currently of great interest but interspecific variance has received no attention. In the temperate Northeast Atlantic, kelp forest composition is changing due to climate‐driven poleward range shifts of cold temperate Laminaria digitata and L. hyperborea and warm temperate L. ochroleuca. To understand how this might affect the carbon sequestration potential of this ecosystem, we quantified interspecific differences in carbon export and decomposition alongside changes in detrital photosynthesis and biochemistry. We found that while warm temperate kelp exports up to 71% more carbon per plant, it decomposes up to 155% faster than its boreal congeners. Elemental stoichiometry and polyphenolic content cannot fully explain faster carbon turnover, which may be attributable to contrasting tissue toughness or unknown biochemical and structural defences. Faster decomposition causes the detrital photosynthetic apparatus of L. ochroleuca to be overwhelmed 20 d after export and lose integrity after 36 d, while detritus of cold temperate species maintains carbon assimilation. Depending on the photoenvironment, detrital photosynthesis could further exacerbate interspecific differences in decomposition via a potential positive feedback loop. Through compositional change such as the predicted prevalence of L. ochroleuca, ocean warming may therefore reduce the carbon sequestration potential of such temperate marine forests.

Abstract:The role of macroalgae as blue carbon (BC) under changing climate was investigated in the subtropical western North Pacific. Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and nutrient influx increased over the past two decades (2001-2021). The proliferation of climate-resilient macroalgae was facilitated. Using Pterocladiella capillacea and Turbinaria ornata, outdoor laboratory experiments and elemental assays underscored the influence of nutrient enrichment on their resilience under ocean warming and low salinity. Macroalgal incorporation into marine sediments, indicated by environmental DNA barcoding, total organic carbon (TOC), and stable isotope analysis. Over time, an increase in δ13C and δ15N values, particularly at greater depths, suggests a tendency of carbon signature towards macroalgaeand nitrogen pollution or high tropic levels. eDNA analysis revealed selective deposition of these species. The species-dependent nature of macroalgae in deep-sea sediments highlights the role of nutrients on climate-resilient macroalgal blooms as carbon sinks in the western North Pacific.

Abstract:Macroalgae form the most extensive and productive benthic marine vegetated habitats globally but their inclusion in Blue Carbon (BC) strategies remains controversial. We review the arguments offered to reject or include macroalgae in the BC framework, and identify the challenges that have precluded macroalgae from being incorporated so far. Evidence that macroalgae support significant carbon burial is compelling. The carbon they supply to sediment stocks in angiosperm BC habitats is already included in current assessments, so that macroalgae are de facto recognized as important donors of BC. The key challenges are (i) documenting macroalgal carbon sequestered beyond BC habitat, (ii) tracing it back to source habitats, and (iii) showing that management actions at the habitat lead to increased sequestration at the sink site. These challenges apply equally to carbon exported from BC coastal habitats. Because of the large carbon sink they support, incorporation of macroalgae into BC accounting and actions is an imperative. This requires a paradigm shift in accounting procedures as well as developing methods to enable the capacity to trace carbon from donor to sink habitats in the ocean.

Intensifying marine heatwaves and limited protection threaten global kelp forests

Abstract:Kelp forests are one of the earth's most productive ecosystems and are at the greatest risk from climate change, yet little is known regarding their future threats and current conservation status. By combining a global remote sensing dataset of floating kelp forests with climate data and projections, we find that exposure to projected marine heatwaves will increase ~8 times compared to contemporary (2001-2020) exposure for intermediate climate scenarios. While exposure will intensify for all forests, climate refugia emerge for some southern hemisphere kelp forests, which have lower exposure to contemporary and projected marine heatwaves. Under these escalating threats, less than 3% of global kelp forests are currently within highly restrictive marine protected areas, the most effective conservation measure for providing climate resilience. Our findings emphasize the urgent need to increase the global protection of kelp forests and set bolder climate adaptation goals.

Abstract:Macroalgal-dominated habitats are rapidly gaining recognition as important contributors to marine carbon cycles and sequestration. Despite this recognition, relatively little is known about the production and fate of carbon originating from these highly productive ecosystems, or how anthropogenic and climate related stressors affect the role of macroalgae in marine carbon cycles. Here, we examine the impact of increasing turbidity on carbon storage, fixation and loss in southern hemisphere kelp forests. We quantified net primary production (NPP) and biomass accumulation (BA), and estimated carbon release via detritus and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) across a large-scale turbidity gradient. We show that increased turbidity, resulting in a 63 % reduction in light, can result in a 95 % reduction in kelp productivity. When averaged annually, estimates of NPP and BA per plant at high light sites were nearly 6 and 2 times greater than those at low light sites, respectively. Furthermore, the quantity of carbon fixed annually by kelp forests was up to 4.7 times greater than that stored as average annual standing stock. At low light sites, the majority of C goes directly into tissue growth and is subsequently eroded. In contrast, excess production at high light sites accounts for up to 39 % of the total carbon fixed and is likely released as DOC. Turbidity is expected to increase in response to climate change and our results suggest this will have significant impacts on the capacity of kelp forests to contribute to carbon sequestration pathways. In addition to demonstrating that turbidity significantly reduces the quantity of carbon fixed by kelp forests, and subsequently released as detritus, our results highlight the negative impacts of turbidity on a large source of previously unaccounted for carbon.

Current status and emerging perspectives of coastal blue carbon ecosystems

Abstract:Blue carbon ecosystems require conservation and restoration to maximize organic carbon (CORG) sequestration to ameliorate greenhouse gas emissions. Salt marshes, mangrove forests and seagrass meadows are all autotrophic and are considered blue carbon ecosystems. Macroalgae and tidal flats are currently not considered blue carbon habitats. Blue carbon ecosystems contribute globally to climate change mitigation and at local and national scales, especially in the provision of other ecosystem goods and services. Financial investment is constrained by large uncertainties in CORG dynamics and best practices in restoration, rehabilitation and conservation. Several key emerging perspectives include (1) the fact that groundwater discharge of dissolved carbon is a major pathway of blue carbon loss; (2) allochthonous CORG inputs are required to achieve ecosystem carbon mass balance; (3) blue carbon dynamics are enhanced by habitat connectivity and biotic activities; (4) CH4 and N2O emissions reduce blue carbon potential; (5) habitat destruction causes blue carbon stock losses, but variable gas emissions; (6) sediment blue carbon stocks are increasing at the poles; and (7) land-use and land-cover changes (LULCC) drive changes in blue carbon stocks and emissions. Further research is needed to clarify the applicability of these emerging perspectives.

Temporal and spatial dynamics of tropical macroalgal contributions to blue carbon

Abstract:Blue carbon ecosystems are a vital part of nature-based climate solutions due to their capacity to store and sequester carbon, but often exclude macroalgal beds even though they can form highly productive coastal ecosystems. Recent estimates of macroalgal contributions to global carbon sequestration are derived primarily from temperate kelp forests, while tropical macroalgal carbon stock in living biomass is still unclear. Here, using Singapore as a case study, we integrate field surveys and remote sensing data to estimate living macroalgal carbon stock. Results show that macroalgae in Singapore account for up to 650 Mg C biomass stock, which is greater than the aboveground carbon found in seagrass meadows but lower than that in mangrove forests. Ulva and Sargassum dominate macroalgal assemblages and biomass along the coast, with both genera exhibiting distinct spatio-temporal variation. The annual range of macroalgal biomass carbon is estimated to be 450 Mg C yr-1, or 0.77 Mg C ha-1 yr-1. Noting the uncertainties of the fate of macroalgal biomass carbon, we estimate the potential sequestration rate and find that it is comparable to mature terrestrial ecosystems such as tropical grasslands and temperate forests. This study demonstrates that macroalgal seasonality allows for a consistent amount of biomass carbon to either be exported and eventually sequestered, or harvested for utilization on an annual basis. These findings on macroalgal growth patterns and their considerable contributions to tropical coastal carbon pool add to the growing support for macroalgae to be formally included in blue carbon assessments.

Abstract:Although seaweeds rank among the most productive vegetated habitats globally, their inclusion within Blue Carbon frameworks is at its onset, partially because they usually grow in rocky substrates and their organic carbon (C org ) is mostly exported and stored beyond their habitat and thus, demonstrating its long-term storage is challenging. Here, we studied the sedimentary C org storage in macroalgal forests dominated by Gongolaria barbata and in adjacent seagrass Cymodocea nodosa mixed with Caulerpa prolifera algae meadows, and bare sand habitats in Mediterranean shallow coastal embayments. We characterized the biogeochemistry of top 30 cm sedimentary deposits, including sediment grain-size, organic matter and C org contents, C org burial rates and the provenance of sedimentary C org throughout stable carbon isotopes (δ 13 C org ) and pyrolysis analyses. Sediment C org stocks and burial rates (since 1950) in G. barbata forests (mean ± SE, 3.5 ± 0.2 kg C org m −2 accumulated at 15.5 ± 1.6 g C org m −2 y −1 ) fall within the range of those reported for traditional Blue Carbon Ecosystems. Although the main species contributing to sedimentary C org stocks in all vegetated habitats examined was C. nodosa (36 ± 2 %), macroalgae contributed 49 % (19 ± 2 % by G. barbata and 30 ± 3 % by C. prolifera ) based on isotope mixing model results. Analytical pyrolysis confirmed the presence of macroalgae-derived compounds in the sediments, including N-compounds and α-tocopherol linked to G. barbata and C. prolifera , respectively. The sedimentary C org burial rate linked to macroalgae within the macroalgal forests examined ranged from 5.4 to 9.5 g C org m −2 y −1 (7.4 ± 2 g C org m −2 y −1 ). This study provides empirical evidence for the long-term (∼70 years) sequestration of macroalgae-derived C org within and beyond seaweed forests in Mediterranean shallow coastal embayments and thereby, supports the inclusion of macroalgae in Blue Carbon frameworks.

Abstract:Coastal vegetated ecosystems are key-nature based solutions in climate change mitigations. Mangroves, seagrass meadows and saltmarshes contribute to carbon sequestration not only through the storage of biomass and sediments, but also through the secretion of dissolved organic carbon over their root system. Macro- and microalgae release most of their produced organic carbon as exudates, exported away from their origin, leading to underrepresentation of their contribution in blue carbon assessments. Here, we analysed 93 sediment cores of coastal vegetated ecosystems from temperate to tropical regions. We used polysaccharides as bioindicators of carbon sequestration to trace carbon from source to sink in different ecosystems. By binding of specific monoclonal antibodies, algal-derived polysaccharides were detected in sediments of coastal vegetated ecosystems. The relative abundance of the main building blocks of polysaccharides, monosaccharides was consistent across all 93 sediment cores, with no significant differences, despite the varying ecosystems and locations. Our findings suggest that the restoration of plant ecosystems, fixing carbon, protecting coasts and enhance biodiversity should also be enumerated for the stored carbon from distant donors. Hence carbon sequestration is a collective or synergistic process of different photosynthetic organisms.

Substantial blue carbon in overlooked Australian kelp forests

Abstract:Abstract Recognition of the potential for vegetated coastal ecosystems to store and sequester carbon has led to their increasing inclusion into global carbon budgets and carbon offset schemes. However, kelp forests have been overlooked in evaluations of this ‘blue carbon’, which have been limited to tidal marshes, mangrove forests, and seagrass beds. We determined the continental-scale contribution to blue carbon from kelp forests in Australia using areal extent, biomass, and productivity measures from across the entire Great Southern Reef. We reveal that these kelp forests represent 10.3–22.7 Tg C and contribute 1.3–2.8 Tg C year −1 in sequestered production, amounting to more than 30% of total blue carbon stored and sequestered around the Australian continent, and ~ 3% of the total global blue carbon. We conclude that the omission of kelp forests from blue carbon assessments significantly underestimates the carbon storage and sequestration potential from vegetated coastal ecosystems globally.

Abstract:The potential for Blue Carbon ecosystems to combat climate change and provide co-benefits was discussed in the recent and influential Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate. In terms of Blue Carbon, the report mainly focused on coastal wetlands and did not address the socio-economic considerations of using natural ocean systems to reduce the risks of climate disruption. In this paper, we discuss Blue Carbon resources in coastal, open-ocean and deep-sea ecosystems and highlight the benefits of measures such as restoration and creation as well as conservation and protection in helping to unleash their potential for mitigating climate change risks. We also highlight the challenges—such as valuation and governance—to marshaling their mitigation role and discuss the need for policy action for natural capital market development, and for global coordination. Efforts to identify and resolve these challenges could both maintain and harness the potential for these natural ocean systems to store carbon and help fight climate change. Conserving, protecting, and restoring Blue Carbon ecosystems should become an integral part of mitigation and carbon stock conservation plans at the local, national and global levels.
Sustained productivity and respiration of degrading kelp detritus in the shallow benthos: Detached or broken, but not dead

Abstract:Temperate kelp forests contribute significantly to marine primary productivity and fuel many benthic and pelagic food chains. A large proportion of biomass is exported from kelp forests as detritus into recipient marine ecosystems, potentially contributing to Blue Carbon sequestration. The degradation of this organic material is slow and recent research has revealed the preservation of photosynthetic functions over time. However, the physiological correlates of detrital breakdown in Laminaria spp. have not yet been studied. The warming climate threatens to reshuffle the species composition of kelp forests and perturb the dynamics of these highly productive ecosystems. The present study compares the physiological response of degrading detritus from two competing North East Atlantic species; the native Boreal Laminaria hyperborea and the thermally tolerant Boreal-Lusitanian L. ochroleuca. Detrital fragment degradation was measured by a mesocosm experiment across a gradient of spectral attenuation (a proxy for depth) to investigate the changes in physiological performance under different environmental conditions. Degradation of fragments was quantified over 108 days by measuring the biomass, production and respiration (by respirometry) and efficiency of Photosystem II (by PAM fluorometry). Data indicated that whilst degrading, the photosynthetic performance of the species responded differently to simulated depths, but fragments of both species continued to produce oxygen for up to 56 days and sustained positive net primary production. This study reveals the potential for ostensibly detrital kelp to contribute to Blue Carbon fixation through sustained primary production which should be factored into Blue Carbon management. Furthermore, the physiological response of kelp detritus is likely dependent upon the range of habitats to which it is exported. In the context of climate change, shifts in species composition of kelp forests and their detritus are likely to have wide-reaching effects upon the cycling of organic matter in benthic ecosystems.

Abstract:Marine ecosystems are important in mitigating rising atmospheric CO2 because of their capacity to store significant quantities of carbon (called blue carbon). To date, three key blue carbon ecosystems have been recognized (seagrass meadows, mangrove forests, tidal marshes), however, evidence is emerging that other ecosystems may also be important. Here, we use meta‐analysis of 253 research publications to investigating the role of other marine ecosystems in blue carbon. At present, mud/tidal flats, shallow sediments/fjords, some components of coral reef systems (e.g. lagoons), and coralline algal beds should also be considered important for blue carbon burial. Photoautotrophic marine ecosystems can lock up organic carbon in their biomass and the associated organic sediments they trap over millennia and are thus regarded as blue carbon ecosystems. Because of the ability of marine ecosystems to lock up organic carbon for millennia, blue carbon is receiving much attention within the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as a nature‐based solution (NBS) to climate change, but classically still focuses on seagrass meadows, mangrove forests, and tidal marshes. However, other coastal ecosystems could also be important for blue carbon storage, but remain largely neglected in both carbon cycling budgets and NBS strategic planning. Using a meta‐analysis of 253 research publications, we identify other coastal ecosystems—including mud flats, fjords, coralline algal (rhodolith) beds, and some components or coral reef systems—with a strong capacity to act as blue carbon sinks in certain situations. Features that promote blue carbon burial within these 'non‐classical' blue carbon ecosystems included: (1) balancing of carbon release by calcification via carbon uptake at the individual and ecosystem levels; (2) high rates of allochthonous organic carbon supply because of high particle trapping capacity; (3) high rates of carbon preservation and low remineralization rates; and (4) location in depositional environments. Some of these features are context‐dependent, meaning that these ecosystems were blue carbon sinks in some locations, but not others. Therefore, we provide a universal framework that can evaluate the likelihood of a given ecosystem to behave as a blue carbon sink for a given context. Overall, this paper seeks to encourage consideration of non‐classical blue carbon ecosystems within NBS strategies, allowing more complete blue carbon accounting.

Abstract:Vegetated coastal and marine habitats in the Nordic region include salt marshes, eelgrass meadows and, in particular, brown macroalgae (kelp forests and rockweed beds). Such habitats contribute to storage of organic carbon (Blue Carbon – BC) and support coastal protection, biodiversity and water quality. Protection and restoration of these habitats therefore have the potential to deliver climate change mitigation and co-benefits. Here we present the existing knowledge on Nordic BC habitats in terms of habitat area, C-stocks and sequestration rates, co-benefits, policies and management status to inspire a coherent Nordic BC roadmap. The area extent of BC habitats in the region is incompletely assessed, but available information sums up to 1,440 km 2 salt marshes, 1,861 (potentially 2,735) km 2 seagrass meadows, and 16,532 km 2 (potentially 130,735 km 2 , including coarse Greenland estimates) brown macroalgae, yielding a total of 19,833 (potentially 134,910) km 2 . Saltmarshes and seagrass meadows have experienced major declines over the past century, while macroalgal trends are more diverse. Based on limited salt marsh data, sediment C-stocks average 3,311 g C org m -2 (top 40-100 cm) and sequestration rates average 142 g C org m -2 yr -1 . Eelgrass C-stocks average 2,414 g C org m -2 (top 25 cm) and initial data for sequestration rates range 5-33 g C org m -2 , quantified for one Greenland site and one short term restoration. For Nordic brown macroalgae, peer-reviewed estimates of sediment C-stock and sequestration are lacking. Overall, the review reveals substantial Nordic BC-stocks, but highlights that evidence is still insufficient to provide a robust estimate of all Nordic BC-stocks and sequestration rates. Needed are better quantification of habitat area, C-stocks and fluxes, particularly for macroalgae, as well as identification of target areas for BC management. The review also points to directives and regulations protecting Nordic marine vegetation, and local restoration initiatives with potential to increase C-sequestration but underlines that increased coordination at national and Nordic scales and across sectors is needed. We propose a Nordic BC roadmap for science and management to maximize the potential of BC habitats to mitigate climate change and support coastal protection, biodiversity and additional ecosystem functions.

Response of macrophyte litter decomposition in global blue carbon ecosystems to climate change

Abstract:Blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs) are important nature‐based solutions for climate change‐mitigation. However, current debates question the reliability and contribution of BCEs under future climatic‐scenarios. The answer to this question depends on ecosystem processes driving carbon‐sequestration and ‐storage, such as primary production and decomposition, and their future rates. We performed a global meta‐analysis on litter decomposition rate constants (k) in BCEs and predicted changes in carbon release from 309 studies. The relationships between k and climatic factors were examined by extracting remote‐sensing data on air temperature, sea‐surface temperature and precipitation aligning to the decomposition time of each experiment. We constructed global numerical models of litter decomposition to forecast k and carbon release under different scenarios. The current k averages at 27±3×10‐2 day‐1 for macroalgae were higher than for seagrasses (1.7±0.2×10‐2 day‐1), mangroves (1.6±0.1×10‐2 day‐1) and tidal marshes (5.9±0.5×10‐3 day‐1). Macrophyte k increased with both air temperature and precipitation in intertidal BCEs and with sea surface temperature for subtidal seagrasses. Above a temperature threshold for vascular plant litter at ~25°C and ~20°C for macroalgae, k drastically increased with increasing temperature. However, the direct effect of high temperatures on k are obscured by other factors in field experiments compared with laboratory experiments. We defined "fundamental" and "realized" temperature response to explain this effect. Based on relationships for realized temperature response, we predict that proportions of decomposed litter will increase by 0.9–5% and 4.7–28.8% by 2100 under low‐ (20C) and high‐warming conditions (40C) compared to 2020, respectively. Net litter carbon sinks in BCEs will increase due to higher increase in litter C production than in decomposition by 2100 compared to 2020 under RCP 8.5. We highlight that BCEs will play an increasingly important role in future climate change‐mitigation. Our findings can be leveraged for blue carbon accounting under future climate change scenarios.
