Abstract:Extending the paradigm of edge computing augments the principles of cloud computing, the fog computing makes the network ideal for the Internet of Things and other applications that require real-time interactions. The Internet of Things is a network of objects that can establish communication with other entities through the Internet by using a computer. The entities encompass any entity with the capability to gather data, control, or engage in remote communication. The most important goal of fogging in this paper is to increase efficiency and reduce the volume of data that is transferred to the cloud for processing, analysis, and storage. In order to increase the quality of service and reduce the energy consumption in fog computing in order to fulfill the Internet of Things service requests, there is a problem of determining the best place to fulfill these requests among fog resources. Given that this challenge is an optimization problem, in this paper, the modified particle swarm optimization algorithm is presented to solve it. The proposed method used novel functions to update the position, velocity, and its main parameters based on the cost function and the defined data set. For validation of the effectiveness of this method, the results are compared to the genetic algorithm and shortest job first. The comparison results show that the proposed method could reduce energy consumption and time delay, and as a result, it will improve the quality of service in performing Internet of Things requests among fog sources. For example, in the lowest and highest number of Internet of Thing services, the time delay in the proposed method is 0.50 s and 1.10 s lower than the genetic algorithm, respectively, as well as, 1.59 s and 9.50 s less than the shortest job first algorithm, respectively. Moreover, in the lowest and highest numbers of Internet of Thing services, the obtained energy consumption by the modified particle swarm optimization is 500 Wh and 1000 Wh less than the genetic algorithm, respectively, as well as, 1600 Wh and 3500 Wh less than the shortest job first method, respectively.
