Abstract:Bortezomib (PS-341), a selective inhibitor of proteasome, induces apoptosis in various tumor cells, but its mechanism of action is unclear. Treatment with PS-341 induces apoptosis in SUDHL6 (DHL6), but not SUDHL4 (DHL4), lymphoma cells. Microarray analysis shows high RNA levels of heat shock protein-27 (Hsp27) in DHL4 versus DHL6 cells, which correlates with Hsp27 protein expression. Blocking Hsp27 using an antisense strategy restores the apoptotic response to PS-341 in DHL4 cells; conversely, ectopic expression of wild-type Hsp27 renders PS-341-sensitive DHL6 cells resistant to PS-341. These findings provide the first evidence that Hsp27 confers PS-341 resistance.

Abstract:Many companies have recognized that the workforce of the future will be significantly more diverse than in the past. A substantial number of these new employees will be women. Industry must create an environment that attracts the best, brightest, and most talented women and provide an environment that empowers them to reach their full potential. Barriers to advancement, such as the real or perceived "glass ceiling," inhibit the individual and ultimately negatively affect the company. Successful companies will recognize that gender diversity is a critical business strategy and implement aggressive programs to assist women in breaking through the glass ceiling. Gender diversity initiatives should include examination of quality of life issues, training and development, organizational policies and practices, and management accountability. Mentoring programs clearly play an important role in gender diversity programs. Personal mentoring experiences in academic and corporate environments, as well as a pilot mentoring program at Land O'Lakes, will be discussed.

Abstract:The current research challenges the assumption that the presence of women in leadership positions will automatically "break the glass ceiling" for other women. We contend that it is not just a female leader's presence, but also her performance, that influences evaluations of subsequent female candidates for leadership positions. We argue that the continued scarcity and perceived mismatch of women with high-level leadership increases gender salience, promoting perceptions of within-group similarity and fostering an evaluative generalization from the performance of a female leader to the evaluations of another, individual woman. In 5 studies, we demonstrate that the effect of exposure to a female leader on another woman's evaluations and leadership opportunities depends on whether she is successful or unsuccessful (Study 1) and whether she confirms or disconfirms stereotype-based expectations about women's leadership abilities (Study 2). Supporting the role of gender salience and shared group membership in the process, we show that this effect occurs only between women in male gender-typed leadership roles: Evaluative generalization does not occur between women in contexts that are not strongly male in gender type (Study 3) and is not observed between men in male-typed leadership (Study 4). We also explore whether there is evaluative generalization between male leaders in a female-typed context (Study 5). Our results suggest that overcoming gender imbalances in leadership may not be as simple as targeted placement, and that having women in high places should not induce complacency about the elimination of gender bias. Abstract:In this study the authors compare career and work experiences of executive women and men. Female (n = 51) and male (n = 56) financial services executives in comparable jobs were studied through archival information on organizational outcomes and career histories, and survey measures of work experiences. Similarities were found in several organizational outcomes, such as compensation, and many work attitudes. Important differences were found, however, with women having less authority, receiving fewer stock options, and having less international mobility than men. Women at the highest executive levels reported more obstacles than lower level women. The gender differences coupled with women's lower satisfaction with future career opportunities raise questions about whether women are truly above the glass ceiling or have come up against a 2nd, higher ceiling.

Women in Leadership: Why So Few and What to Do About It

Abstract:The numbers of women in medical school and in medical training have increased dramatically and are near 50% overall, but the number of women who advance to senior and leadership positions is not nearly this high. There are many reasons why the number of women in leadership roles in academic medicine has not kept pace with the number of women entering the field of medicine. Two popular themes are the glass ceiling (referring to an invisible barrier to advancement) and the leaky pipeline (the loss of women faculty along the path, or pipeline, to advancement). I believe that both come into play. Glass ceiling issues tend to be of two types: those related to the institutional culture and those related to problems of bias, especially unconscious bias. Leaky pipeline issues include the challenges of work-life integration and the need for leadership development for women. There are solutions to all of these challenges. These include improving institutional culture; making sure women advance as quickly as men and are paid equitably; ensuring that there are resources to help with work-life balance, related not only to family but to all aspects of life; and providing adequate mentoring and leadership training. These measures will help all faculty, as factors that hamper women's advancement may hamper men as well. Although these themes are broadly applicable, there are strategies that can address them all. We just need to be aware, and be proactive, and we will succeed in breaking the glass ceiling and patching the leaky pipeline.
The Glass Ceiling in Global Health: Perspectives of Female and Male Anesthesiologists

Abstract:Background: Gender equity is essential for improving health outcomes globally. Despite comprising 75% of the global health workforce and dominating academic global health programs, women remain underrepresented in leadership positions in global health organizations. Our study aimed to identify potential gender differences in the beliefs and attitudes regarding barriers that women anesthesiologists encounter in pursuing careers and leadership roles in global health and to identify recommendations for improving gender equity in global health. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey focusing on career leadership opportunities and challenges uniquely faced by women clinicians in global health. We obtained permission from the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists to distribute our questionnaire to their leadership committee members during 2 months (May-July 2022). Results: The questionnaire was distributed to 164 study participants with 67 individuals (44.8% female) based in 38 different countries completing the survey (response rate 40.9%). Overall, 47.8% of the participants aspired to a leadership position in global health and 58.2% agreed women face unique barriers to global health leadership (70.0% of women compared to 48.6% of men; P = .081). Female gender (odds ratio [OR], 19.22, P = .004) and divorced marital status (OR, 746.26, P = .004) were positively associated and African ethnicity (OR, 0.002, P = .017) was negatively associated with the perception of gender bias in their career growth. The main challenges included balancing work and family responsibilities, lack of female mentors or role models, gender-based discrimination, and limited opportunities for career advancement. Men acknowledged these challenges but reported personally experiencing them to a lesser extent, particularly concerning lack of opportunities (P = .005), inadequate pay (P = .000), and lack of training (P = .000). Conclusions: Gender disparities exist in the pursuit of global health careers. This study underscored that more women than men perceive barriers in pursuing leadership roles in global health and that men generally encounter these obstacles to a lesser extent. Female representation in leadership positions could be supported through evidence-informed policies that promote work-life balance, improve mentorship, offer equal opportunities for career advancement and adequate pay, and combat gender-based discrimination.

Abstract:Although efforts have been directed toward the advancement of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) positions, little research has directly examined women's perspectives and bottom-up strategies for advancing in male-stereotyped disciplines. The present study utilized Photovoice, a Participatory Action Research method, to identify themes that underlie women's experiences in traditionally male-dominated fields. Photovoice enables participants to convey unique aspects of their experiences via photographs and their in-depth knowledge of a community through personal narrative. Forty-six STEM women graduate students and postdoctoral fellows completed a Photovoice activity in small groups. They presented photographs that described their experiences pursuing leadership positions in STEM fields. Three types of narratives were discovered and classified: career strategies, barriers to achievement, and buffering strategies or methods for managing barriers. Participants described three common types of career strategies and motivational factors, including professional development, collaboration, and social impact. Moreover, the lack of rewards for these workplace activities was seen as limiting professional effectiveness. In terms of barriers to achievement, women indicated they were not recognized as authority figures and often worked to build legitimacy by fostering positive relationships. Women were vigilant to other people's perspectives, which was costly in terms of time and energy. To manage role expectations, including those related to gender, participants engaged in numerous role transitions throughout their day to accommodate workplace demands. To buffer barriers to achievement, participants found resiliency in feelings of accomplishment and recognition. Social support, particularly from mentors, helped participants cope with negative experiences and to envision their future within the field. Work-life balance also helped participants find meaning in their work and have a sense of control over their lives. Overall, common workplace challenges included a lack of social capital and limited degrees of freedom. Implications for organizational policy and future research are discussed.

Abstract:Women’s involvement in the labor market continues to increase, but this does not happen to women in career leadership positions. In fact, women’s career advancement continues to experience obstacles and individual power plays a role in their career advancement efforts. The purpose of this research is to identify the challenges of improving women’s careers, their personal sense of power, and their efforts in improving their careers. The approach used was qualitative with an instrumental case study design. An open-ended questionnaire was distributed to get participants who fit the criteria to be interviewed, namely women who have worked for more than 1 year, there is a career ladder in their workplace, and participants indicated experiencing a glass ceiling. The results of research on four participants showed that the challenges that are still often faced by working women are discrimination in the work environment, family environment expectations regarding women’s domestic roles, and internalization of feminine roles in individuals. Participants indicated to have different personal sense of power, ranging from low to high. Individuals with a high personal sense of power tend to dare to express their opinions and are able to make structured plans for career development. While individuals with a low personal sense of power tend to be more silent, but still show a desire to develop a career.
Experiences of Organizational Practices That Advance Women in Health Care Leadership

Abstract:Importance: Women are underrepresented in health care leadership positions. Organizational practices and culture play a key role in mitigating this disparity. Objective: To explore the experiences of women in leadership roles and inform how health care organizations can support the advancement of women into leadership. Design, setting, and participants: This qualitative study used a constructivist grounded theory approach applied over a 1-year period (May 1, 2021, to May 31, 2022) in a large private health care network in Australia. Women were eligible if they had been in leadership positions for more than 5 years. Purposive and theoretical sampling guided recruitment of 28 women, representing medical, nursing, and allied health specialties. Interviews lasted 1 hour, producing 500 pages of transcripts for analysis. Main outcomes and measures: The primary outcome was a model of organizational practices and conditions that advance women in health care leadership, extrapolated from the collective experiences of women in leadership. Key elements pertained to organizational patterns of interaction and group norms and behaviors that contributed toward women's experiences of career advancement. Results: Overall, 28 women (23 [82%] White; 3 [11%] Southeast Asian) participated in the study, 10 (36%) of whom were in nursing, 9 (32%) of whom were in allied health, and 9 (32%) of whom were in medical disciplines. Organizational practices that advance women in health care leadership were highly dependent on conducive organizational culture enhancing women's credibility and capability as leaders. Four interrelated elements were identified that create the necessary conditions for an organizational culture to advance women in health care leadership, including (1) identifying and actively addressing systemic barriers, (2) challenging gendered assumptions and expectations of leadership behaviors, (3) providing mentorship to shape career opportunities, and (4) determining how these conditions all contribute toward raising women's credibility to enable internalizing a leadership identity. For women, advancing to leadership involved organizations moving away from ad hoc, inconsistent applications of gender equity practices and generating supportive practices that reinforced a workforce culture of credibility, collaboration, and continuous improvement to support women. Conclusions and relevance: In light of persisting inequity in health care leadership, women's experiences were captured in this qualitative study to identify organizational practices that support their advancement. Insights into factors that influence efficacy of these practices, including building a supportive culture and mentoring, are discussed. This research informs a National Health and Medical Research Council initiative with international collaborators to support organizations in advancing women in health care leadership.

This paper is intended to discuss the barriers that women face in their career pursuits for senior-level jobs because of the Glass ceiling and what they must do to go ahead and reach the leadership level they want or put it rightly, they deserve. This empirical study done in first grade colleges of Mangalore city is a preliminary attempt to identify the impact of Glass ceiling on women in education sector especially in their career advancement. It is evident from the findings that the existence of Glass ceiling in private institutions are far more when compared to government institutions.

[Neuromeningeal tuberculosis: the contribution of genetic amplification to diagnosis].

Abstract:Neurological manifestations of tuberculosis are rare, especially in immunocompetent subjects. The heterogeneity of clinical and radiological features induces frequently a delay for diagnosis. The aim of the study was to describe clinical and radiological presentation of 11 cases of neuro-tuberculosis and to evaluate clinical outcome. We performed clinical, CSF, MRI and outcome evaluation in all patients. We also performed a mycobacterium analysis by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Patients were 6 men and 5 women with a mean age of 45.4 years. Clinical presentations were meningeal symptoms in 9 cases and focal manifestations in 4 cases. CSF was abnormal in 82 p.cent of cases (protein increase in 73 p.cent, pleiocytosis in 73 p.cent, hypoglycorrhachia in 45 p.cent and hypochlorrhachia in 36 p.cent). The best diagnostic test was PCR (positive in 45 p.cent of cases). CSF cultures were positive in only 2 cases (18 p.cent). Only 2 patients had chest involvement. MRI was abnormal in 64 p.cent of cases showing pseudo-tumor, arachnoiditis, vascular lesions or medullar involvement. Outcome was good in all cases but two (one patient died and one patient had paraplegia possibly related to late diagnosis). Neurological manifestations of tuberculosis are extremely various in terms of clinical and radiological presentation. The best diagnostic test seems to be tuberculosis PCR. Outcome is frequently favorable if late diagnosis is avoided.

Abstract:The Glass Ceiling Effect is a phenomenon that portrays intangible obstacles often interfering the career advancement of talented people, especially women, to top-level management positions. This article aims to explore the underlying factors of the Glass Ceiling Effect in Indonesia, with a focus on the career challenges faced by women and the barriers in achieving gender equality in the workplace. The study included 100 female respondents working in various sectors. The research findings show that there are several factors reflecting the Glass Ceiling Effect such as Internal Business Structure, Social Challenges, Situational Challenges, and Individual Challenges. On the other hand, the Government Challenge factor does not reflect the Glass Ceiling Effect.

Abstract:This study aimed at bridging this gap and proposed a Three-Dimensional Model (Macro, Meso, and Micro). It also attempted to gain a deeper understanding of the nature of the glass ceiling, which limits women's participation in higher decision-making positions and determined how to overcome these barriers. The study adopted a mixed-methods approach. Three exploratory workshops involving 65 academic women leaders were conducted at three Saudi universities. This was followed by a field survey of the overall population involving 213 female leaders. Then six interviews of 35 female leaders were conducted. The results of the field survey illustrated the barriers preventing women from career development. According to the participants, the most challenging barriers at the institutional level were related to administrative and organizational aspects. They were followed by the barriers related to institutional culture. The social and personal barriers were ranked the last. The results of the interviews also revealed a set of ideas, which proposed methods to support women's progress to senior positions. They included political authority, policy development, open-door policy, adherence to the standards for selecting leaders based on competence, continuous evaluation, and professional development. The important role of the academic woman leader in the development of her career requires her to take responsibility for her professional growth and meet the requirements of the leadership role. The study recommends a comprehensive and profound treatment of the glass ceiling phenomenon. The study recommends a comprehensive training plan to support the skills, experiences, and capabilities of qualified women to occupy academic leadership. Benefiting from international expertise regarding this issue is highly recommended. There must be continuous monitoring and analysis of some quantitative and qualitative indicators based on an accurate database related to the academic empowerment of Saudi women.

Abstract:Women in academia face many challenges. Although there have been possibilities for the advancement of women in higher education, gender discrepancies in leadership continue, with women facing structural challenges such as bias, and unequal possibilities for promotion. Balancing a career as a female academic, including parenting and family obligations adds another layer of complication, often resulting in breakdown. Women contribute distinct strengths to academia, expanding intellectual conversation and establishing varied learning environments. Mentorship, sponsorship, and inclusive policies assist in reducing barriers and encourage women to thrive as leaders, resulting in positive change in the academic setting. The article outlines the nuances of women in academia and the challenges and opportunities they face when pursuing leadership positions. It further explores the experiences and views of women in the faculty of Business at a University of Technology (UOT). A mixed methods approach was adopted to enable the researcher to give a female perspective to the academic position, experiences, and challenges within academia. The researcher used her judgment to select the sample based on the purpose of the research and a convenience sample to select best-case scenarios. Finally, the article suggests a participative model of collaboration, nurturance, compassion, and self-care to equip women with the tools they need to create career advancement opportunities and increase personal and professional change.
Metaphors Describing the Gendered Organization in the Career Advancement of Women: An Integrative Review

Abstract:Worldwide, gender equality remains a barrier for women seeking career advancement in corporations. Despite the globalization of corporate social responsibility programs, women have not achieved positional parity with men within the managerial hierarchy. The purpose of this integrative review was to investigate the breadth of the gendered organization literature, summarize the evidence, and inform future research about the career advancement of women in privately owned and publicly traded corporations. Twelve databases were searched between January 1990 and December 2023 for published evidence. Of the 1914 documents screened, 55 articles were included in this review. The gendered organization literature is slowly evolving as a critical area for management research even though fully developed substantive and formal theories are lacking. However, gendered organizations can be conceptualized for theoretical development as a constellation of metaphors embedded in the corporate culture. These metaphors include firewalls, glass ceilings, glass cliffs, glass escalators, labyrinths, queen bees and beehives, and sticky floors. Notably, few intervention studies were reported in the literature. Corporate social responsibility programs had a surprisingly limited impact on eliminating deep-seated structural attributes contributing to gendered organizations. Therefore, management scholars need to engage in theoretical development and research to advance a comprehensive theory of the gendered organization, and studies should investigate why the identified metaphors continue to adversely impact the career advancement of women despite the presence of corporate social responsibility programs. Finally, existing evidence needs to be translated into intervention recommendations for policymakers and corporate leaders.
Networking and other important requirements for women leaders in their advancement to senior leadership positions in the National Health Service (NHS): a qualitative study

Abstract:Background Executive leadership boards in healthcare should be diverse, reflecting the populations they serve and the workforce serving in them. Worldwide, women constitute most of the healthcare workforce, yet the minority of leaders. Women experience barriers to progression to board-level positions at personal, workplace and wider systemic levels, including self-imposed barriers, prejudice and limited access to role models. Evidence to understand enablers to progression is limited. This study addressed the following research questions: What are the inspirations and/or enablers for women, especially those from under-represented backgrounds, in the pursuit of career progression? What are the coping mechanisms employed to respond to barriers for those women? Methods A qualitative interview study with ten women in board-level positions in National Health Service (NHS) organisations across South Yorkshire, with semistructured interviews carried out through 2022, and thematic analysis of data informed by an intersectionality lens. Results Three key themes emerged: (1) identities and self-improvement were informed by a sense of self, motivating experiences and the expectations of others; (2) barriers to progression included disability, disadvantage, limiting self-belief, lack of support and prejudice and (3) senior women proactively adopted coping strategies, leading to bespoke, blended solutions including formal programmes alongside personal approaches, notably the development of comprehensive peer networks. Conclusion The study highlights the need for NHS Systems and healthcare organisations to adopt facilitating enablers to respond to the challenges faced by under-represented staff, including coaching and mentoring, talent management programmes and peer networking, to enable diverse women leaders to successfully apply for board-level positions.
Women faculty: an analysis of their experiences in academic medicine and their coping strategies

Abstract:Background: Women represent a persistently low proportion of faculty in senior and leadership roles in medical schools, despite an adequate pipeline. Objectives: This article highlights women's concerns in the context of the academic medical culture in which they work, and considers the ways in which they cope with and resist marginalizing situations. Methods: To explore the experiences of faculty in academic medicine, a multidisciplinary faculty research team conducted 96 open-ended interviews with faculty representing a broad set of disciplines at 4 different career stages (early career, leaders, plateaued, and left academic medicine) in 5 medical schools. Coded data from interview transcripts indicated situations in which women were marginalized. Experiences of marginality were examined through a systematic secondary analysis of a subset of 17 representative cases using qualitative analysis. Results: Women had a sense of "not belonging" in the organization, perceiving themselves as cultural outsiders and feeling isolated and invisible. They described barriers to advancement, including bias and gender role expectations. Faculty from underrepresented minority groups and PhDs perceived a double disadvantage. Four strategies were identified that helped women cope with and resist professional barriers: self-silencing, creating microenvironments, balancing life and work, and simultaneously holding dual identities--being successful in the organization while trying to change the culture. Conclusions: Although the sample size was small, this analysis found that many women faculty perceive themselves as outsiders within academic medicine. Because of their marginalization, minority and non-minority women are more able to see the bias and exclusion that may operate in academic medical centers as well as other problematic dimensions of the culture. As cultural outsiders, women may be better able to advance change to improve academic medical culture. A next step is to leverage women's awareness to develop a broader vision of what that culture can and should be like.

Abstract:Despite ongoing research efforts to resolve the pertinent issues with the underrepresentation of women from Black and Asian Minority Ethnic backgrounds in senior leadership positions, the problem persists. We suggest that one reason for the lack of progress is that management research has predominantly focused on the manifestation of race and gender inequality, the barriers experienced by these women, and the resulting adverse outcomes, with inadequate attention given to practical interventions for resolving these issues. We argue that an urgent and critical paradigm shift from problems to solutions is required in order to advance the field. Using the conservation of resource theory as a lens, we explore the lived experiences of 50 highly successful Black and Asian women and how they navigated the organizational labyrinth to achieve success in their careers. Our findings revealed that despite discriminatory experiences that threatened their career advancement, there were several personal and contextual resources which they drew upon to achieve career success. We develop a resource taxonomy framework illustrating these salient career advancement resources across their career journey, alongside strategies they used to protect these valuable resources. Our findings have theoretical and practical implications for career, leadership and diversity scholars and practitioners.

Abstract:Extensive research has been dedicated to the study of women on boards, revealing a gradual improvement in the actual representation of women as directors on firm boards. This paper presents a comprehensive critical theory framework that combines talent management with corporate governance, human resources, and gender theories to elucidate the underrepresentation of women on corporate boards. This conceptual study, conducted through theoretical literature analysis, identifies a knowledge gap in the limited attention given to studies on the talent of women serving on boards. The purpose of this essay was to explain the sluggish progress of female directors on boards globally, despite the implementation of different laws and the evident business rationale for enhancing women's presence on boards. This study incorporates divergent and unanimous critical analyses of women on boards research, which either facilitates or impedes the advancement of women to executive positions. The primary discoveries of this study enhance the existing information by pinpointing several obstacles that contribute to the underrepresentation of women on corporate boards. These problems stem from structural factors inside organizations, individual psychological factors, and societal preconceptions. These theoretical perspectives identify obstacles and biases in the process of recruiting, developing, and retaining women directors. The implementation of a suitable talent management solution can address these issues.
