Abstract:The use of industrial and biological waste to synthesize adsorbent materials for the treatment of high fluorinated geothermal water is a cost-effective way to address the fluorine pollution problem while also reusing waste resources. In this study, modified hydroxyapatite-loaded zeolite molecular sieve composites (Al(OH) 3 -HAP@ZMS) were synthesized using fly ash and shell as precursors, which were then cation doped and compound modified to ensure adsorption while remaining cost-effective. When the material ratio of ZMS to Al(OH) 3 -HAP was 1:6, the best adsorption material was obtained. Under the optimum adsorption conditions (dosage = 6 g/L, T = 50 °C), Al(OH) 3 -HAP@ZMS achieved a removal rate of 92.5% and an adsorption capacity of 1.56 mg/g for 10 mg/L F − solution and can reduce the F − concentration to below the national standard concentration of 1 mg/L. The fitting of kinetic, isothermal, and thermodynamic data revealed that F − adsorption by Al(OH) 3 -HAP@ZMS followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Freundlich model, confirming that the adsorption process was primarily chemisorption and multilayer adsorption. The adsorption processes included electrostatic attraction, ion exchange between -OH and F − , complexation of fluoro-aluminum, and co-precipitation of Ca 2+ with F − . At the same time, Al(OH) 3 -HAP@ZMS demonstrated good anti-interference performance in natural waters against co-existing ions and some heat resistance. Therefore, the composite adsorbent Al(OH) 3 -HAP@ZMS, as an effective and environmentally friendly low-cost adsorbent, is expected to achieve the practical engineering application of geothermal water defluoridation in Guanzhong, maximizing the dual benefits of "fluoride remove" and "waste resource reuse."

Abstract:Excessive fluoride in water causes serious environmental issues and adverse impacts on human health. In this study, an innovative lanthanum-modified carbon (LMC) adsorbent rooted in Sargassum sp. was developed for fluoride removal. Excellent removal efficiency was observed over a wide pH range of 3-9. Almost 90% of fluoride adsorption occurred within the first 1h; the equilibrium was established within 4h. The maximum adsorption capacity of LMC could reach 94.34 mg/g at neutral pH, much higher than many commercial adsorbents. Although the presence of such competitive anions as SiO3(2-), SO4(2-), HCO3(-), PO4(3-) and AsO3(-) had certain interference on fluoride uptake, it was noticed that there was no significant impact in the presence of humic acid. Furthermore, according to the instrumental analysis, the fluoride removal was majorly controlled by outer-sphere complex adsorption, while electrostatic attraction and ion exchange mechanisms could also be observed in the fluoride adsorption process. The findings from this study suggest that our adsorbent may have a great potential in industrial applications.

Abstract:In the present work, pond clay was modified with lanthanum and applied for fluoride uptake from an aqueous environment. The clay soil was treated with a 0.1 M solution of lanthanum oxide and heated at 500 ℃ for 90 min in a muffle furnace. The modified clay was characterized by the following techniques: particle size analysis, zeta potential, Fourier-transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, pH at the zero point of charge, X-ray diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The adsorption experiments revealed that modified clay soil was very effective in removing fluoride with an adsorption capacity of 1.96 mg/g. The fluoride removal was followed well with Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.999), pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 = 1), and the adsorption was an exothermic process. The performance of lanthanum-modified clay (LMC) in a fixed bed column was evaluated using different models, including the Thomas, Adams–Bohart, Yoon–Nelson, and Clark models. A regeneration study was compared with NaOH and NaHCO3 and successfully performed for four adsorption cycles. A probable mechanism is proposed including ligand exchange, electrostatic attraction, and inner complexation for fluoride adsorption on the LMC. The developed adsorbent was also tested for the treatment of natural groundwater.

Abstract:A novel fluoride ion adsorbent, which uses natural clay modified by lanthanum and aluminum, was successfully prepared. The adsorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscope, BET surface area measurement, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Batch experiments were carried out to investigate the adsorbent performance for fluoride ion. Fluoride ion adsorbent onto modified clay followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model with the correlation coefficient value of 0.9846. The isotherm data was well fitted to the Langmuir model. The adsorption capacity of the modified clay was 1.3033 mg/g. The optimum pH value for fluoride ion removal was 6. The modified clay adsorbent can be regenerated by KAl(SO4)2·12H2O. Six times’ regeneration experiments showed that the regeneration rate of the modified clay still higher than 80 %, and the mass loss rate lower than 10 %. The modified clay performed strong adsorption capacity for fluoride ion and high regeneration rate. It could be a cost-effective adsorbent to remove fluoride from groundwater in undeveloped regions.

Abstract:Fluoride contamination is an important problem for sustainable human development and has to be addressed by environmental governance. However, the rapid and efficient removal of fluoride from aqueous solutions has always been challenging. In this study, several calcium-doped layered yttrium hydroxides (Ca-Y LRHs) were synthesized and used to remove fluoride. Relative to other adsorbents, 6% Ca-Y LRHs exhibits excellent performance of adsorption equilibrium time and maximum monolayer adsorption capacity with 4 min and 125.54 mg/g, respectively, determined by the adsorption kinetics and Langmuir model. The remarkable removal ability is probably attributed to the high fraction of nitrate anions in the interlayer space, which instead of hydroxyl groups or OH - , can be replaced by fluoride, inhibiting the rise of pH in solution. The ions adsorption and detection analysis indicated electrostatic and ion exchange interactions are involved in the defluorination process, and oxygenated groups in interlayer spaces were the main ligands to be replaced by fluoride. Studies on potential applications were successfully conducted on wastewater of an electrochemical fluorination process and surface water, demonstrating the ability of 6% Ca-Y LRHs to remove fluoride from these environments. These findings could provide an alternative strategy for the rapid and efficient treatment of fluoride contamination.

Abstract:We investigated the adsorption mechanisms for removing fluoride based on experimental and modeling studies. Lanthanum-aluminum perovskite was designed for treating wastewater contaminated by fluoride. A fluorine-species model was developed to calculate the concentrations of different species of fluorine: F−, HF, HF2−. Multiple kinetic models were examined and the pseudo-second order model was found the best to fit the experimental data, implying fast-chemisorption. The thermodynamic data were fitted by the Langmuir model and Freundlich model at different temperatures, indicating heterogeneous adsorption at low temperature and homogeneous adsorption at high temperature. The La2Al4O9 material had less influence from negative ions when adsorbing fluoride. The adsorption mechanisms were further studied using experiments and Density Functional Theory calculations. The adsorption experiments could be attributed to the lattice plane (1 2 1) and La, O, Al sites. More Al sites were required than La sites for the increase of fluoride concentration. By contrast, more La sites than Al sites were needed for increased pH.

Abstract:In order to mitigate the harmful effects of eutrophication in water bodies, the applications of lanthanum-modified materials for phosphate removal from wastewater have attracted much attention. Unlike conventional adsorbents, plant wastes usually have poor adsorption abilities and are difficult to be reused for desorption of phosphate due to their small pore sizes and ununiform loading of modified ions. In this paper, a composite adsorbent (LC-MM) was synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of waste traditional Chinese medical materials (MMs) with load of lanthanum carbonate and co-heating treatment with coal fly ash (CFA), which was applied to remove phosphate from water. The results showed that maximum adsorption capacity of LC-MM was 52 mg g −1 , and the LC-MM showed appreciable adsorption capacity of phosphate for agricultural wastewater in the presence of complex interfering ions and for urban surface waters with low phosphate concentrations. Five adsorption-desorption cycles showed good reusability. The mechanism study showed that the La 3+ ions were more uniformly distributed on the surface of the absorbents with the introduction of Fe 3+ , Al 3+ , Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ ions in CFA. The ligand exchange between phosphate and carbonate, the internal spherical complexation formed by lanthanum ion and phosphate, and surface chemical precipitation attachment are the main reasons why the adsorption capacity of LC-MM approached or even surpassed that of conventional lanthanum-modified adsorbents. In conclusions, this work proposed an effective method for the modification of plant materials.

Abstract:Lanthanum alginate bead is a new, highly active adsorbent. In the present study, we investigated its adsorption performance and its adsorption mechanism. The adsorption isotherm for fluoride onto lanthanum alginate bead fits the Langmuir model well, and the maximum adsorption capacity is 197.2 mg·g−1. X-ray diffraction shows the amorphous nature of lanthanum alginate bead, which allows for better accessibility to fluoride and thus better activity. Infrared spectra of lanthanum alginate bead before and after adsorption confirm its stable skeletal structure. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the dense surface structure of the adsorbent appear cracks after adsorption. The adsorption mechanism of lanthanum alginate bead is considered as an ion exchange between F− and Cl− or OH−, as verified from the adsorbent and the solution by pH effect, energy dispersive X-ray, and ion chromatography.
High-performance lanthanum-based metal–organic framework with ligand tuning of the microstructures for removal of fluoride from water

Abstract:Excess fluoride in water poses a threat to ecology and human health, which has attracted global attention. In this study, a series of lanthanum-based metal–organic frameworks (La-MOFs) were synthesized by varying the organic ligands (i.e., terephthalic acid (BDC), trimesic acid (BTC), biphenyl-4,4-dicarboxylic acid (BPDC), 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (BHTA), and 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid (PMA)) to control the microscopic structure of the MOFs and subsequently apply them for the removal of fluoride in water. The maximum capture capacities of La-BTC, La-BPDC, La-BHTA, La-PMA, and La-BDC at 298 K are 105.2, 125.9, 145.5, 158.9, and 171.7 mg g−1, respectively. The adsorption capacity is greater than most reported adsorbents. The adsorption isotherms of La-MOFs for fluoride are well fit to the Langmuir isotherm model. In addition, the adsorption kinetics of La-BTC, La-BPDC, La-BHTA, La-PMA, and La-BDC follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the kinetic rate-limiting step of adsorption is chemical adsorption. Thermodynamics revealed that temperature is favorable for the adsorption of fluoride. Meanwhile, La-BTC, La-BPDC, La-BHTA, La-PMA, and La-BDC are suitable for the removal of fluoride in a relatively wide pH range (4.0–9.0). Simultaneously, from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, electrostatic attraction and ligand exchange are identified as the main action mechanisms for the adsorption of fluoride of La-MOFs. The prepared La-MOFs are used as efficient adsorbents for removal of fluoride in actual water, indicating that they have great potential in removing fluoride in real and complex environmental water. This work provides a new strategy for designing adsorbents with adjustable microstructure and expected function to effectively recover fluorosis in water.

Abstract:Excess fluoride in water can be efficiently removed by lanthanum based material, however, different lanthanum species exhibited distinct fluoride removal capability. In this study, three typical lanthanum based nanoparticles denoted as L1, L2 and L3 in the form of La(OH)3, La2O3·nH2O and LaCO3OH respectively were synthesized and well characterized for fluoride removal. They differ in terms of morphology, surface charge, water content, specific surface area and crystallinity. L2 (La2O3·nH2O) exhibited the highest adsorption capacity (~28.9 mg/g) and selectivity towards fluoride, followed by L3 (LaCO3OH) (~25.1 mg/g) and L1 (La(OH)3) (~6.03 mg/g). Despite the relatively low capacity for L1, it could be efficiently regenerated by alkaline solution for repeated use. However, both L2 and L3 suffered significant from capacity loss after regeneration. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) analysis and molecular configuration modelling suggested the distinct mechanism of fluoride adsorption onto the three materials. Fluoride was captured by L1 and L3 via electrostatic attraction and ligand exchange of different bond strength. However, a stronger LaF interaction via chemical adsorption by L2 was observed. This study provided new insights into the role of commonly used La species for fluoride removal.

Abstract:Fluoride is one of the essential trace elements for the human body, but excessive fluoride will cause serious environmental and health problems. This paper summarizes researches on the removal of fluoride from aqueous solutions using newly developed or improved biomass materials and biomass-like organic materials in recent years. These biomass materials are classified into chitosan, microorganisms, lignocellulose plant materials, animal attribute materials, biological carbonized materials and biomass-like organic materials, which are explained and analyzed. By comparing adsorption performance and mechanism of adsorbents for removing fluoride, it is found that carbonizing materials and modifying adsorbents with metal ions are more beneficial to improving adsorption efficiency and the adsorption mechanisms are various. The adsorption capacities are still considerable after regeneration. This paper not only reviews the properties of these materials for fluoride removal, but also focuses on the comparison of materials performance and fluoride removal mechanism. Herein, by discussing the improved adsorption performance and research technology development of biomass materials and biomass-like organic materials, various innovative ideas are provided for adsorbing and removing contaminants.

Abstract:Abstract: La-loaded absorbents have been widely reported for fluoride removal due to the strong affinity of La 3+ towards fluoride ion. Herein, chemical removal of fluoride from flue gas scrubbing wastewater using lanthanum salt is investigated. The retaining free F − concentration, phase composition and morphology of filtration residues, and the distribution of fluorine have been investigated using ion-selective electrode, analytical balance, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffractor. The results show that at La/F molar ratio ≥1:3.05, the majority of fluorine exists as LaF x 3− x complexes, leading to the failure of fluoride removal. At 1:3.20 ≤ La/F molar ratio ≤1:3.10, the formation of LaF 3 is facilitated. However, co-existing LaF x 3− x tends to absorb on the surface of LaF 3 particles, leading to the formation of colloidal solution with large numbers of LaF 3 ·LaF x 3− x suspended solids. At an optimized La/F molar ratio of 1:3.10, a fluoride removal of 97.86% is obtained with retaining fluorine concentration of 6.42 mg L −1 . Considering the existing of positively charged LaF x 3− x and LaF 3 ·LaF x 3− x , coagulation removal of fluoride is proposed and investigated using lanthanum salts and negatively charged SiO 2 · n H 2 O colloidal particles, which is in-situ provided via Na 2 SiO 3 hydrolysis at pH near 5.5. At a La/F molar ratio of 1:3.00 and Na 2 SiO 3 dose of 0.50 g L −1 , a fluoride removal of 99.25% is obtained with retaining fluorine concentration of 2.24 mg L −1 . When Na 2 SiO 3 dose increases to 1.00 g L −1 , the retaining fluorine concentration could be further reduced to 0.80 mg L −1 .

Abstract:The development of chemical industry has brought about serious fluoride pollution, and there is an urgent need to develop an adsorbent with high efficiency and stability for fluoride removal. Despite the remarkable adsorption capacity of lanthanum hydroxide hydrate for fluoride ions, its industrial application is limited by powder leaching and strict pH requirements.In this study, lanthanum-containing anionic resin (HLO-D201) was synthesized by the method of precursor introduction and in-situ deposition, mainly by introducing La 3+ into the resin, adding sodium hydroxide to precipitate it in the resin pore, forming hydrated lanthanum oxide.The characterization analysis showed that hydrated lanthanum oxide (HLO) was successfully introduced into the porous matrix of the resin and existed in the form of crystalline hydrated oxide.Static adsorption experiments demonstrated that HLO-D201 could effectively adsorb fluoride ions in a wide pH range (2–10). Since nano La (OH) 3 was encapsulated in the resin pore, the loss of La (OH) 3 was greatly reduced, and under the condition of competitive adsorption of several coexisting ions, Only phosphoric acid group interferes obviously with the adsorption of F-. The synthesized HLO-D201 still showed good adsorption capacity after regenerated by NaOH–NaCl composite solution for six times. The removal mechanism of fluoride by HLO-D201 is mainly electrostatic attraction and ligand exchange.Overall, HLO-D201 is a kind of fluorine removal adsorbent with excellent performance and wide application prospects.

Enhanced fluoride remediation from aqueous solution by La-modified ZIF-8 hybrids

Abstract:To ensure water safety, fluoride elimination from aqueous environment is an urgent affair. In this study, a series of La-modified ZIF-8 (denoted as La-ZIF-8) hybrids with different contents of La were fabricated via a solvothermal reaction and used for fluoride recovery from wastewater. The structure and morphology of the fabricated La-ZIF-8 hybrid were confirmed by various techniques (SEM, XRD, BET, FTIR, and XPS). The specific surface area along with the pore volume of La-ZIF-8 hybrid was 121 m 2 g −1 and 0.816 cm 3 g −1 , respectively. The defluoridation performance of La-ZIF-8 under different conditions was assessed by static batch trials. The optimized La-ZIF-8 with a La/Zn molar ratio of 4:1 achieved the supreme defluoridation performance. The fluoride uptake was greatly enhanced from 1.85 mg g −1 for pure ZIF-8–49.5 mg g −1 for La-ZIF-8 at C 0 = 10 mg L −1 . The results revealed that La-ZIF-8 had a maximal fluoride uptake of 224.72–230.95 mg g −1 at 30–50 °C, pH 4, and C 0 = 80 mg L −1 . Adsorption of fluoride on La-ZIF-8 obeyed to the Langmuir isotherm ( R 2 > 0.99) and pseudo-second order model ( R 2 > 0.999), reflecting a single-layer chemical adsorption process. Δ H 0 (36.38 kJ mol −1 ) > 0, Δ S 0 (155.36 J mol −1 K −1 ) > 0, and Δ G 0 < 0 stated that the defluoridation by La-ZIF-8 is an endothermic nature, random state, highly feasible and spontaneous process. The co-existing of cations and anions effect inferred that Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , SO 4 2– , Cl – , and NO 3 – only had a trivial impact on fluoride removal performance, illustrating the high selectivity for F – . The objective of this research was to anchor lanthanum oxyhydroxides on a commercial granular activated carbon (GAC) to remove fluoride from water considering the effect of the solution pH, and the presence of co-existing anions and organic matter. The activated carbon was modified with lanthanum oxyhydroxides by impregnation. SEM and XRD were performed in order to determine the crystal structure and morphology of the La(III) particles anchored on the GAC surface. FT-IR and pK(a)'s distribution were determined in order to elucidate both the possible mechanism of the lanthanum anchorage on the activated carbon surface and the fluoride adsorption mechanism on the modified material. The results showed that lanthanum ions prefer binding to carboxyl and phenolic groups on the activated carbon surface. Potentiometric titrations revealed that the modified carbon (GAC-La) possesses positive charge at a pH lower than 9. The adsorption capacity of the modified GAC increased five times in contrast to an unmodified GAC adsorption capacity at an initial F(-) concentration of 20 mg L(-1). Moreover, the presence of co-existing anions had no effect on the fluoride adsorption capacity at concentrations below 30 mg L(-1), that indicated high F(-) affinity by the modified adsorbent material (GAG-La).
Simple preparation and efficient fluoride removal of La anchored Zr-based metal–organic framework adsorbent

Abstract:Excess fluoride in drinking water from groundwater can cause dental and skeletal fluorosis affecting millions of people worldwide. Adsorption is an appealing strategy for defluoridation due to its simple operation and environmental friendliness. However, conventional adsorbents exhibit low adsorption capacity because few exposed active sites. In this work, La anchored Zr-based metal-organic framework (La-UiO-66-(COOH) 2 ) adsorbent with dual-metal sites was designed and synthesized to remove fluoride effectively. The doping of La(III) using uncoordinated carboxyl group of UiO-66-(COOH) 2 increased the adsorption capacity. The morphology, composition, structure, surface area, and thermal stability of adsorbent were carefully characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX), fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The adsorbent is a polyhedral shape with aggregated and smaller crystalline particles and La is uniformly distributed over the adsorbent, favoring the effective adsorption of fluoride. La-UiO-66-(COOH) 2 showed excellent adsorption performance in a wide pH range of 3–9, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 57.23 mg g −1 . The fluoride removal rate of as-prepared adsorbent reached as high as 87 % within 5 min. The adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order equation model and the Freundlich isotherm model. Thermodynamic research indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. After four adsorption-desorption cycles, the fluoride removal rate of the adsorbent was still retained at 79.7%. The design of dual-metal site adsorbents provides a potential strategy for highly efficient removal of fluoride.

Abstract:Fluorine pollution has become an urgent global public health concern due to its adverse effects on aquatic organisms and human life, which raises the imperative demand for the development of economical and efficient fluoride adsorbents. In this study, we demonstrate that solid waste of red mud (RM) originating from the aluminum industry can be converted into fluoride adsorbents by the integration of cerium-based compounds. Besides the adsorption kinetics and isotherm, the effects of adsorbent dosage, contact time, pH of solution, initial concentration, temperature, and competitive ions on the defluoridation performance of the absorbents have been systematically investigated. Benefiting from the strong affinity between cerium species and F-ions as well as the structure advantage, the optimized RM-derived fluoride absorbents show a maximal adsorption capacity above 14.74 mg/g at 298 K at pH = 7. More importantly, our RM-derived fluoride absorbents can be applied towaste water with heavy fluorine pollution (up to 60 mg/L), multiple interference ions (NO3 −, SO4 2−, and Cl−), and a wide pH range (2–8), which outperforms most RM-based defluorination materials ever reported. The present work gives a full understanding of fluoride absorption behavior and mechanism and also offers potential practical applications of the RM-derived functional materials for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Groundwater containing high concentration of fluoride has made great concern in China. Many researchers are eager to look for an applicable method for fluoride removal. Adsorption process is broadly recognized as a low-cost, high-efficient and environmental-friendly technology. In this research, a novel adsorbent prepared by aluminum sulfate modified chitosan/zeolite molecular sieve (AC-Z) composites was used to remove fluoride from synthetic solutions. The fluoride adsorption performance of AC-Z adsorbents was investigated by factors of dose (0.5–7 mg/100 mL), contact time (0.5–12.0 h), temperature (10°C–35°C), solution pH (3–11), initial fluoride concentration (5.0–50.0 mg/L) and co-existing anions (Cl–, CO3 2–, SO4 2–) in series of batch experiments. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Brunauer–Emmett– Teller and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to analyze the structure and morphology of the AC-Z adsorbents. The AC-Z adsorbents with fluoride removal efficiency of 93.1% were processed under conditions of initial concentration 10 mg/L, dose 2 g/100 mL, contact time 8 h, pH value 7 and temperature 20°C. The kinetic studies indicated that fluoride adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics well (R 2 = 0.999), and adsorption isotherms can be well described by Freundlich model (R 2 = 0.988). Thermodynamic studies showed the fluoride adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. The results of this preliminary study indicated that AC-Z was a potential and efficient treatment option for groundwater with fluoride pollution.

Abstract:A convenient and effective method was developed to fabricate zirconium-based calcium sulfate whiskers (Zr-CSWs), an environmentally friendly adsorption material designed to clean excessive fluoride from wastewater. Zr-CSWs, which potentially provide high adsorption activity toward fluoride in wastewater, overcome an aggregation problem typical of Zr-based species that may block the pore structure of the supporting material and degenerate its treatment performance. The results indicate that Zr-CSWs show excellent equilibrium adsorption capacity compared to other Zr-based materials in practical water solutions with pH values of 6–7. The adsorption of fluoride on Zr-CSWs was further evaluated in accordance with the Langmuir equation and the pseudosecond-order model. Coexisting anions had a minor effect on the removal of fluoride, and a strong alkali solution regenerated the used adsorbent. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to determine the mechanism of fluoride removal. The calculations demonstrated that the removal of fluoride by Zr-CSWs was mainly achieved by ion exchange between fluoride ions and OH- on the surface of the adsorbent, where a protonation process created low-coordination Zr atoms.
