Abstract:The aim of this study is to develop a simple retrofit technology for hydrogen (H 2 ) utilization in medium-sized natural gas-fueled engines in an incomplete H 2 supply network. The simplest retrofit technology installs only an H 2 supply system in the intake port of a commercial lean-burn engine with a prechamber/spark ignition system. Engine settings employ the strategies of wide-open throttle operation, passive prechamber operation, and ignition timing adjustment. The experimental conditions include a load limit of BMEP 1.0 MPa under 100% H 2 operation, and an H 2 mixing ratio limit of heating value basis 75 % under 100% load of BMEP 1.36 MPa. These represent the upper limits at which no abnormal combustion is observed. The experimental results of H 2 operation are compared with those of city gas operation as a reference condition. In the condition of load limit under 100% H 2 operation, the maximum cylinder pressure is increased slightly to about 1 MPa, compared to city gas combustion mode. Additionally, the NOx emissions rate is reduced by 25%, and the thermal efficiency is improved by about +2% points. The results demonstrate that these strategies achieve stable combustion, low NO x emissions, and high thermal efficiency for H 2 operation. Ultimately, this makes the use of natural gas and H 2 feasible.
