What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to address the demand for efficient anode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). With the proliferation of electronic devices, the demand for high-performance energy storage materials is increasing, prompting researchers to explore new materials to enhance the energy density, kinetic performance, and cycle life of batteries. In this study, the authors investigate the potential of three 2D Janus transition metal dichalcogenides, CrSSe, CrSTe, and CrSeTe, as anode materials for lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries through first-principles calculations. Specifically, the research focuses on the electrochemical performance of these materials, including their electronic structure, metal adsorption and diffusion characteristics, open-circuit voltage (OCV), and specific capacity. The study shows that these materials exhibit metallic characteristics in their pure phase, with lithium atoms diffusing easily and binding effectively on their surfaces, possessing high adsorption energy and low diffusion barriers. Additionally, these materials demonstrate low average open-circuit voltage and high storage capacity, indicating their potential as anode materials for lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries. In summary, this paper attempts to evaluate the feasibility of CrSSe, CrSTe, and CrSeTe as novel, efficient anode materials for lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries through theoretical calculations.
