Abstract:An embedding of a graph on an orientable surface is orientably-regular (or rotary, in an equivalent terminology) if the group of orientation-preserving automorphisms of the embedding is transitive (and hence regular) on incident vertex-edge pairs of the graph. A classification of orientably-regular embeddings of complete graphs was obtained by L. D. James and G. A. Jones [in "Regular orientable imbeddings of complete graphs", J. Combinatorial Theory Ser. B 39 (1985), 353-367], pointing out interesting connections to finite fields and Frobenius groups. By a combination of graph-theoretic methods and tools from combinatorial group theory we extend results of James and Jones to classification of orientably-regular embeddings of complete multigraphs with arbitrary edge-multiplicity.

Make a graph singly connected by edge orientations

Abstract:A directed graph $D$ is singly connected if for every ordered pair of vertices $(s,t)$, there is at most one path from $s$ to $t$ in $D$. Graph orientation problems ask, given an undirected graph $G$, to find an orientation of the edges such that the resultant directed graph $D$ has a certain property. In this work, we study the graph orientation problem where the desired property is that $D$ is singly connected. Our main result concerns graphs of a fixed girth $g$ and coloring number $c$. For every $g,c\geq 3$, the problem restricted to instances of girth $g$ and coloring number $c$, is either NP-complete or in P. As further algorithmic results, we show that the problem is NP-hard on planar graphs and polynomial time solvable distance-hereditary graphs.

The existence of $\{p,q\}$-orientations in edge-connected graphs

Abstract:In 1976 Frank and Gy{á}rf{á}s gave a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of an orientation in an arbitrary graph $G$ such that for each vertex $v$, the out-degree $d^+_G(v)$ of it satisfies $p(v)\le d^+_G(v)\le q(v)$, where $p$ and $q$ are two integer-valued functions on $V(G)$ with $p\le q$. In this paper, we give a sufficient edge-connectivity condition for the existence of an orientation in $G$ such that for each vertex $v$, $d^+_G(v)\in \{p(v),q(v)\}$, provided that for each vertex $v$, $p(v)\le \frac{1}{2}d_G(v) \le q(v)$, $|q(v)-p(v)|\le k$, and there is $t(v)\in \{p(v),q(v)\}$ in which $|E(G)|=\sum_{v\in V(G)}t(v)$. This result is a generalization of a theorem due to Thomassen (2012) on the existence of modulo orientations in highly edge-connected graphs.

A necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of $\{p,p+1,q-1,q\}$-orientations in simple graphs

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple graph and let $p$ and $q$ be two integer-valued functions on $V(G)$ with $p< q$ in which for each $v\in V(G)$, $q(v) \ge \frac{1}{2}d_G(v)$ and $p(v) \ge \frac{1}{2} q(v)-2$. In this note, we show that $G$ has an orientation such that for each vertex $v$, $d^+_G(v)\in\{p(v),p(v)+1,q(v)-1,q(v)\}$ if and only if it has an orientation such that for each vertex $v$, $p(v) \le d^+_G(v)\le q(v)$ where $d^+_G(v)$ denotes the out-degree of $v$ in $G$. From this result, we refine a result due to Addario-Berry, Dalal, and Reed (2008) in bipartite simple graphs on the existence of degree constrained factors.

Abstract:The family $\mathcal{OG}(4)$ consisting of graph-group pairs $(\Gamma, G)$, where $\Gamma$ is a finite, connected, 4-valent graph admitting a $G$-vertex-, and $G$-edge-transitive, but not $G$-arc-transitive action, has recently been examined using a normal quotient methodology. A subfamily of $\mathcal{OG}(4)$ has been identified as `basic', due to the fact that all members of $\mathcal{OG}(4)$ are normal covers of at least one basic pair. We provide an explicit classification of those basic pairs $(\Gamma, G)$ which have at least two independent cyclic $G$-normal quotients (these are $G$-normal quotients which are not extendable to a common cyclic normal quotient).

Partial Graph Orientations and the Tutte Polynomial

Abstract:Gessel and Sagan investigated the Tutte polynomial, $T(x,y)$ using depth first search, and applied their techniques to show that the number of acyclic partial orientations of a graph is $2^gT(3,1/2)$. We provide a short deletion-contraction proof of this result and demonstrate that dually, the number of strongly connected partial orientations is $2^{n-1}T(1/2,3)$. We then prove that the number of partial orientations modulo cycle reversals is $2^gT(3,1)$ and the number of partial orientations modulo cut reversals is $2^{n-1}T(1,3)$. To prove these results, we introduce cut and cycle minimal partial orientations which provide distinguished representatives for partial orientations modulo cut and cycle reversals. These extend classes of total orientations introduced by Gioan, and Greene and Zaslavksy, and we highlight a close connection with graphic and cographic Lawrence ideals. We conclude with edge chromatic generalizations of the quantities presented, which allow for a new interpretation of the reliability polynomial for all probabilities, $p$ with $0 < p <1/2$.

Geometric bijections between spanning subgraphs and orientations of a graph

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected finite graph. Backman, Baker, and Yuen have constructed a family of explicit and easy-to-describe bijections $g_{\sigma,\sigma^*}$ between spanning trees of $G$ and $(\sigma,\sigma^*)$-compatible orientations, where the $(\sigma,\sigma^*)$-compatible orientations are the representatives of equivalence classes of orientations up to cycle-cocycle reversal which are determined by a cycle signature $\sigma$ and a cocycle signature $\sigma^*$. Their proof makes use of zonotopal subdivisions and the bijections $g_{\sigma,\sigma^*}$ are called \emph{geometric bijections}. In this paper, we extend the geometric bijections to subgraph-orientation correspondences. Moreover, we extend the geometric constructions accordingly. Our proofs are purely combinatorial, even for the geometric constructions. We also provide geometric proofs for partial results, which make use of zonotopal tiling, relate to Backman, Baker, and Yuen's method, and motivate our combinatorial constructions. Finally, we explain that the main results hold for \emph{regular matroids}.

Completing orientations of partially oriented graphs

Abstract:We initiate a general study of what we call orientation completion problems. For a fixed class of oriented graphs, the orientation completion problem asks whether a given partially oriented graph P can be completed to an oriented graph in by orienting the (nonoriented) edges in P. Orientation completion problems commonly generalize several existing problems including recognition of certain classes of graphs and digraphs as well as extending representations of certain geometrically representable graphs. We study orientation completion problems for various classes of oriented graphs, including k‐arc‐strong oriented graphs, k‐strong oriented graphs, quasi‐transitive‐oriented graphs, local tournaments, acyclic local tournaments, locally transitive tournaments, locally transitive local tournaments, in‐tournaments, and oriented graphs that have directed cycle factors. We show that the orientation completion problem for each of these classes is either polynomial time solvable or NP‐complete. We also show that some of the NP‐complete problems become polynomial time solvable when the input‐oriented graphs satisfy certain extra conditions. Our results imply that the representation extension problems for proper interval graphs and for proper circular arc graphs are polynomial time solvable. The latter generalizes a previous result.

Abstract:An undirected graph is said to be cordial if there is a friendly (0,1)-labeling of the vertices that induces a friendly (0,1)-labeling of the edges. An undirected graph $G$ is said to be $(2,3)$-orientable if there exists a friendly (0,1)-labeling of the vertices of $G$ such that about one third of the edges are incident to vertices labeled the same. That is, there is some digraph that is an orientation of $G$ that is $(2,3)$-cordial. Examples of the smallest noncordial/non-$(2,3)$-orientable graphs are given and upper bounds on the possible number of edges in a cordial/$(2,3)$-orientable graph are presented. It is also shown that if $T$ is a linear operator on the set of all undirected graphs on $n$ vertices that strongly preserves the set of cordial graphs or the set of $(2,3)$-orientable graphs then $T$ is a vertex permutation..

Abstract:Abstract The clique number of an undirected graph G is the maximum order of a complete subgraph of G and is a well‐known lower bound for the chromatic number of G . Every proper k ‐coloring of G may be viewed as a homomorphism (an edge‐preserving vertex mapping) of G to the complete graph of order k . By considering homomorphisms of oriented graphs (digraphs without cycles of length at most 2), we get a natural notion of (oriented) colorings and oriented chromatic number of oriented graphs. An oriented clique is then an oriented graph whose number of vertices and oriented chromatic number coincide. However, the structure of oriented cliques is much less understood than in the undirected case. In this article, we study the structure of outerplanar and planar oriented cliques. We first provide a list of 11 graphs and prove that an outerplanar graph can be oriented as an oriented clique if and only if it contains one of these graphs as a spanning subgraph. Klostermeyer and MacGillivray conjectured that the order of a planar oriented clique is at most 15, which was later proved by Sen. We show that any planar oriented clique on 15 vertices must contain a particular oriented graph as a spanning subgraph, thus reproving the above conjecture. We also provide tight upper bounds for the order of planar oriented cliques of girth k for all .

Abstract:We prove that for every oriented graph $D$ and every choice of positive integers $k$ and $\ell$, there exists an oriented graph $D^*$ along with a surjective homomorphism $\psi\colon V(D^*) \to V(D)$ such that: (i) girth$(D^*) \geq\ell$; (ii) for every oriented graph $C$ with at most $k$ vertices, there exists a homomorphism from $D^*$ to $C$ if and only if there exists a homomorphism from $D$ to $C$; and (iii) for every $D$-pointed oriented graph $C$ with at most $k$ vertices and for every homomorphism $\varphi\colon V(D^*) \to V(C)$ there exists a unique homomorphism $f\colon V(D) \to V(C)$ such that $\varphi=f \circ \psi$. Determining the oriented chromatic number of an oriented graph $D$ is equivalent to finding the smallest integer $k$ such that $D$ admits a homomorphism to an order-$k$ tournament, so our main theorem yields results on the girth and oriented chromatic number of oriented graphs. While our main proof is probabilistic (hence nonconstructive), for any given $\ell\geq 3$ and $k\geq 5$, we include a construction of an oriented graph with girth $\ell$ and oriented chromatic number $k$.

Bi-eulerian embeddings of graphs and digraphs

Abstract:In 1965 Edmonds showed that every eulerian graph has a bi-eulerian embedding, i.e., an embedding with exactly two faces, each bounded by an euler circuit. We refine this result by giving conditions for a graph to have a bi-eulerian embedding that is specifically orientable or nonorientable. We give connections to the maximum genus problem for directed embeddings of digraphs, in which every face is bounded by a directed circuit. Given an eulerian digraph $D$ with all vertices of degree 2 mod 4 and a directed euler circuit $T$ of $D$, we show that $D$ has an orientable bi-eulerian directed embedding with one of the faces bounded by $T$; this is a maximum genus directed embedding. This result also holds when $D$ has exactly two vertices of degree $0$ mod $4$, provided they are interlaced by $T$. More generally, if $D$ has $\ell$ vertices of degree 0 mod 4, we can find an orientable directed embedding with a face bounded by $T$ and with at most $\ell+1$ other faces. We show that given an eulerian graph $G$ and a circuit decomposition $C$ of $G$, there is an nonorientable embedding of $G$ with the elements of $C$ bounding faces and with one additional face bounded by an euler circuit, unless every block of $G$ is a cycle and $C$ is the collection of cycles of $G$. In particular, every eulerian graph that is not edgeless or a cycle has a nonorientable bi-eulerian embedding with a given euler circuit $T$ bounding one of the faces. Polynomial-time algorithms giving the specified embeddings are implicit in our proofs.

Orientations of graphs with at most one directed path between every pair of vertices

Abstract:Given a graph $G$, we say that an orientation $D$ of $G$ is a KT orientation if, for all $u, v \in V(D)$, there is at most one directed path (in any direction) between $u$ and $v$. Graphs that admit such orientations have been used by Kierstead and Trotter (1992), Carbonero, Hompe, Moore, and Spirkl (2023), Briański, Davies, and Walczak (2024), and Girão, Illingworth, Powierski, Savery, Scott, Tamitegami, and Tan (2024) to construct graphs with large chromatic number and small clique number that served as counterexamples to various conjectures. Motivated by this, we consider which graphs admit KT orientations (named after Kierstead and Trotter). In particular, we construct a graph family with small independence number (sublinear in the number of vertices) which admits a KT orientation. We show that the problem of determining whether a given graph admits a KT orientation is NP-complete, even if we restrict ourselves to planar graphs. Finally, we provide an algorithm to decide if a graph with maximum degree at most 3 admits a KT orientation, whereas, for graphs with maximum degree 4, the problem remains NP-complete.

Characterization of graphs with orientable total domination number equal to $|V|-1$

Abstract:In a directed graph $D$, a vertex subset $S\subseteq V$ is a total dominating set if every vertex of $D$ has an in-neighbor from $S$. A total dominating set exists if and only if every vertex has at least one in-neighbor. We call the orientation of such directed graphs valid. The total domination number of $D$, denoted by $\gamma_t(D)$, is the size of the smallest total dominating set of $D$. For an undirected graph $G$, we investigate the upper (or lower) orientable total domination number of $G$, denoted by $\mathrm{DOM}_t(G)$ (or $\mathrm{dom}_t(G)$), that is the maximum (or minimum) of the total domination numbers over all valid orientations of $G$. We characterize those graphs for which $\mathrm{DOM}_t(G)=|V(G)|-1$, and consequently we show that there exists a family of graphs for which $\mathrm{DOM}_t(G)$ and $\mathrm{dom}_t(G)$ can be as far as possible, namely $\mathrm{DOM}_t(G)=|V(G)|-1$ and $\mathrm{dom}_t(G)=3$.

Classifying prime graphs of finite groups -- a methodical approach

Abstract:For a finite group $G$, the vertices of the prime graph $\Gamma(G)$ are the primes that divide $|G|$, and two vertices $p$ and $q$ are connected by an edge if and only if there is an element of order $pq$ in $G$. Prime graphs of solvable groups as well as groups whose noncyclic composition factors have order divisible by exactly three distinct primes have been classified in graph-theoretic terms. In this paper, we begin to develop a general theory on the existence of edges in the prime graph of an arbitrary $T$-solvable group, that is, a group whose composition factors are cyclic or isomorphic to a fixed nonabelian simple group $T$. We then apply these results to classify the prime graphs of $T$-solvable groups for, in a suitable sense, most $T$ such that $|T|$ has exactly four prime divisors. We find that these groups almost always have a 3-colorable prime graph complement containing few possible triangles.

On Oriented Colourings of Graphs on Surfaces

Abstract:For an oriented graph $G$, the least number of colours required to oriented colour $G$ is called the oriented chromatic number of $G$ and denoted $\chi_o(G)$.For a non-negative integer $g$ let $\chi_o(g)$ be the least integer such that $\chi_o(G) \leq \chi_o(g)$ for every oriented graph $G$ with Euler genus at most $g$. We will prove that $\chi_o(g)$ is nearly linear in the sense that $\Omega(\frac{g}{\log(g)}) \leq \chi_o(g) \leq O(g \log(g))$. This resolves a question of the author, Bradshaw, and Xu, by improving their bounds of the form $\Omega((\frac{g^2}{\log(g)})^{1/3}) \leq \chi_o(g)$ and $\chi_o(g) \leq O(g^{6400})$.

Oriented Coloring on Recursively Defined Digraphs

Abstract:Coloring is one of the most famous problems in graph theory. The coloring problem on undirected graphs has been well studied, whereas there are very few results for coloring problems on directed graphs. An oriented k-coloring of an oriented graph G = ( V , A ) is a partition of the vertex set V into k independent sets such that all the arcs linking two of these subsets have the same direction. The oriented chromatic number of an oriented graph G is the smallest k such that G allows an oriented k-coloring. Deciding whether an acyclic digraph allows an oriented 4-coloring is NP-hard. It follows that finding the chromatic number of an oriented graph is an NP-hard problem, too. This motivates to consider the problem on oriented co-graphs. After giving several characterizations for this graph class, we show a linear time algorithm which computes an optimal oriented coloring for an oriented co-graph. We further prove how the oriented chromatic number can be computed for the disjoint union and order composition from the oriented chromatic number of the involved oriented co-graphs. It turns out that within oriented co-graphs the oriented chromatic number is equal to the length of a longest oriented path plus one. We also show that the graph isomorphism problem on oriented co-graphs can be solved in linear time.

Number of Subgraphs and Their Converses in Tournaments and New Digraph Polynomials

Abstract:An oriented graph $D$ is converse invariant if, for any tournament $T$, the number of copies of $D$ in $T$ is equal to that of its converse $-D$. El Sahili and Ghazo Hanna [J. Graph Theory 102 (2023), 684-701] showed that any oriented graph $D$ with maximum degree at most 2 is converse invariant. They proposed a question: Can we characterize all converse invariant oriented graphs? In this paper, we introduce a digraph polynomial and employ it to give a necessary condition for an oriented graph to be converse invariant. This polynomial serves as a cornerstone in proving all the results presented in this paper. In particular, we characterize all orientations of trees with diameter at most 3 that are converse invariant. We also show that all orientations of regular graphs are not converse invariant if $D$ and $-D$ have different degree sequences. In addition, in contrast to the findings of El Sahili and Ghazo Hanna, we prove that every connected graph $G$ with maximum degree at least $3$, admits an orientation $D$ of $G$ such that $D$ is not converse invariant. We pose one conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new graph called prime order element graph defined on a finite group G . Its set of vertices is the group G and two distinct vertices are adjacent if order of xy is prime. We study the connectivity, degree, girth, domination number, bipartiteness etc. of the proposed graph. In many cases, we find useful information about the group G from its associated graph . Finally, we conclude with some open issues and direction of further studies.
