Abstract:In the instructional practice, it is necessary to clearly understand the objectives and scope of instructional in these two subjects so that there is no overlap. In addition, to measure the success of instructional and the right strategies, appropriate tests are required to become an efficient and effective instructional. The research method used in this study is the development research method in education by Borg and Gall (2007). Finding or developing a specific program facilitates and improves the quality of instructional outcomes for students participating in the Introduction to Statistics subject. From the results of observations of the teaching and instructional process for the Introduction to Statistics subject. Students unable to use statistical analysis are related to instructional problems, namely, instructional strategies that refer to the needs and characteristics. Conducting experimental research can be followed up by looking at the advantages of using instructional materials. The instructional materials are in books designed based on student needs, based on a compilation of materials in several textbooks.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss a particular perspective on the design and use of curriculum resources brought through applying the documentational approach to didactics. We present this theoretical approach and the associated “reflective investigation” method. We consider that teachers and teacher educators develop documents, associating resources and a scheme of use of these resources. We provide an illustrative example of curriculum resources around the use of the Chinese abacus. We present our results, concerning the documents developed by a primary school teacher and teacher educator using these resources. We analyze simultaneously the teacher’s capacity to use curriculum resources and curriculum resources influence on instruction.

Abstract:Most discipline-based education researchers (DBERs) were formally trained in the methods of scientific disciplines such as biology, chemistry, and physics, rather than social science disciplines such as psychology and education. As a result, DBERs may have never taken specific courses in the social science research methodology—either quantitative or qualitative—on which their scholarship often relies so heavily. One particular aspect of (quantitative) social science research that differs markedly from disciplines such as biology and chemistry is the instrumentation used to quantify phenomena. In response, this Research Methods essay offers a contemporary social science perspective on test validity and the validation process. The instructional piece explores the concepts of test validity, the validation process, validity evidence, and key threats to validity. The essay also includes an in-depth example of a validity argument and validation approach for a test of student argument analysis. In addition to DBERs, this essay should benefit practitioners (e.g., lab directors, faculty members) in the development, evaluation, and/or selection of instruments for their work assessing students or evaluating pedagogical innovations.

Abstract:The overarching theme of this monograph is to encourage developmental researchers to acquire cutting-edge and innovative design and statistical methods so that we can improve the studies that we execute on the topic of change. Card, the editor of the monograph, challenges the reader to think about works such as the present one as contributing to the new subdiscipline of developmental methodology within the broader field of developmental science. This thought-provoking stance served as the stimulus for the present commentary, which is a collection of observations on "how we learn about methodology and statistics." The point is made that we often learn critical new information from our colleagues, from seminal writings in the literature, and from conferences and workshop participation. It is encouraged that researchers pursue all three of these pathways as ways to acquire innovative knowledge and techniques. Finally, the role of developmental science societies in supporting the dissemination and uptake of this type of knowledge is discussed.

Abstract:Summary This paper provides an overview of current research on teaching and learning statistics, summarizing studies that have been conducted by researchers from different disciplines and focused on students at all levels. The review is organized by general research questions addressed, and suggests what can be learned from the results of each of these questions. The implications of the research are described in terms of eight principles for learning statistics from Garfield (1995) which are revisited in the light of results from current studies. Résumé Cet article présente une vue d'ensemble de la recherche actuelle sur l'enseignement et l'étude de la statistique. Il résume les analyses qui ont été menées par des chercheurs de disciplines différentes. Le travail s'organise autour de questions de recherche générales qui ont été adressées, et suggère ce que l'on peut apprendre à partir de ces résultats au sujet de chacune de ces questions. Les implications de la recherche sont décrites en termes de huit principes sur l'étude de la statistique de Garfield (1995) qui sont repris selon les résultats d'études actuelles.

Abstract:The 2000 ASA Guidelines for Undergraduate Statistics majors aimed to provide guidance to programs with undergraduate degrees in statistics as to the content and skills that statistics majors should be learning. With new guidelines forthcoming, it is important to help programs develop an assessment cycle of evaluation. How do we know the students are learning what we want them to learn? How do we improve the program over time? The first step in this process is to translate the broader Guidelines into institution-specific measurable learning outcomes. This paper provides examples of how five programs did so for the 2000 Guidelines. We hope they serve as illustrative examples for programs moving forward with the new guidelines.

Abstract:We explore the effect of the design of intentional teaching sequences from the concrete to the abstract in order to promote the teaching of statistics in connection with sustainability. To this end, the pre-validated questionnaires "MTSK-Stochastic Statistics" and "ESD in Statistics Activities" are administered to in-service primary education teachers. Both tools contain the same statistics teaching itinerary, based on the mathematics teaching itineraries approach, that includes five tasks: a real situation, a manipulative, a game, a technological resource, and a graphic resource. Each task includes an overview, objectives, content, required materials, development, and development questions; in addition, the second questionnaire includes connections to sustainability. The results show that tasks with real contexts, manipulative resources, and technological resources are the ones with the lowest scores. These initial findings lead us to conclude that teachers mobilize their knowledge to teach statistics as it relates to sustainability in different ways, depending on the type of task.

In addition, approaches using game development for research is described. Each method is described in its own chapter by a researcher with practical experience of applying the method to topic of games. Through this, the book provides an overview of research methods that enable us to better our understanding on games.

Abstract:Purpose ‐ Curriculum development is a vital component in the educational process. Its scope is exceptionally broad, and it involves nearly everyone who is involved with teaching and learning, including teachers and librarians. Curriculum development resources offer guidance for lesson plan preparation that meets the educational standards set by each state. Resources for curriculum development for both teachers and librarians are abundant, with resources being offered both electronically and in print, freely available and for purchase. The purpose of this paper is to provide a selection of resources offered for teachers and those offered for librarians, electronically, in print, freely available, and for purchase. Design/methodology/approach ‐ Curriculum development resources were chosen based on the selection criteria included in the article, including: authority, accuracy, scope, appropriateness, and treatment. There were many resources for both teachers and librarians available, but only a few were selected. Those selected met the selection criteria and were outstanding and beneficial resources for curriculum development. Findings ‐ Resources for curriculum development for both teachers and librarians are abundant, with resources being offered both electronically and in print, freely available and for purchase. There are many resources for both teachers and librarians; however, teacher resources outnumber those for librarians. Perhaps in the upcoming years, as information literacy instruction becomes part of more institutions, further resources will be made available. Originality/value ‐ The function of curriculum development is to research, plan, and prepare the content and methods that will be taught during instruction to achieve the desired outcomes. State curriculum standards currently play a major role in schools and how the curriculum is developed. Curriculum development resources provide the necessary resources for teachers and librarians to plan and prepare curricula that can meet the standards set by each state.
