Abstract:Lung cancer, which is on the rise, is the primary reason for mortality among cancer patients. As stated by the World Health Organization, lung tumor is the second-deadliest type of cancer globally. Most lung cancer patients are diagnosed when the illness has already gone this far. Most of these patients receive a diagnosis in stage 3 or 4, as early lung cancer symptoms typically go unnoticed. Lung cancer affects 84 percent of males and 75 percent of women who smoke. We anticipate that early nodule detection will significantly reduce the mortality rate. As a result, it has been shown that early screening using computed tomography (CT) is beneficial in finding early-stage lung cancer. This is because of missed nodules and inaccurate diagnoses. Detecting prospective nodules and eliminating false-positives are crucial components of an excellent pulmonary CAD system. This article provides a thorough comparative analysis of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques used in lung nodule detection and classification. It reviews various algorithms, encompassing both traditional ML methods and advanced DL architectures, and discusses their performance, benefits, and limitations. Additionally, the survey investigates the use of ResNet-50, a deep convolutional neural network, for lung nodule classification. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the ResNet-50 architecture and demonstrates its effectiveness in improving classification accuracy. Finally, it demonstrates that CNN has excellent approaches to identify early detection of lung carcinoma with the help of current difficulties and future possibilities. By examining the relative strengths of different methods, this survey aims to guide future research and advancements in lung nodule detection and classification.
