Abstract:
In this paper, the dissolution, refinement and re-precipitation of long period stacking order structure and solute-segregated stacking faults (LPSO structure/SFs) in an Mg-Gd-Zn-Mn alloy fabricated by hot extruding were studied. The results demonstrate that the refinement of LPSO structure/SFs was dominated by the misalignment mechanism and re-dissolution mechanism. Dislocation slips on the LPSO structure/SFs, as well as the rapid diffusion of solute atoms was responsible for the re-dissolution of LPSO structure/SFs. As the LPSO structure/SFs dissolved, a region with supersaturated solute atoms was formed and resulting in re-precipitation of SFs in continuous dynamically recrystallized grains. Finally, the evolution model of LPSO structure/SFs during continuous dynamic recrystallization was proposed.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper mainly studies the behavior of long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure and solute-enriched stacking fault layer (SFs) in magnesium-gadolinium-zinc-manganese (Mg-Gd-Zn-Mn) alloy during the hot working process. The research found that the refinement of LPSO structure/SFs is mainly dominated by the dislocation alignment mechanism and the solute enrichment mechanism. During the hot deformation process, LPSO structure/SFs will dissolve again due to dislocation slip and rapid diffusion of solute atoms, forming an oversaturated solute region and causing the re-precipitation of SFs in the continuously dynamic recrystallized grains. The authors analyzed this phenomenon through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), and proposed an evolution model for LPSO structure/SFs during continuous dynamic recrystallization process. The paper also discusses the synergistic effect of dislocations and solute diffusion on the dissolution of LPSO structure/SFs, as well as the effect of LPSO structure on the strengthening of magnesium alloy at different temperatures.
