Abstract:Dust storms, which occur in dry and semi-arid regions with high levels of airborne dust particles (aerosols) and frequent wind occurrences, are a serious meteorological hazard. The yearly emission of aerosols into the atmosphere as a result of these storms has a negative influence on both the environment and human health. Recent studies have utilized the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer to investigate dust storms due to high temporal resolution and globe covers, allowing for real-time monitoring, which is crucial for tracking dust storm in distant regions. This paper is an adaptive model for sandstrom detection based on UNet architecture enhanced with Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) and a gating attention mechanism. The decoder network within the UNet employs Bi-LSTM and gating attention, which facilitates the capture of the temporal evolution of sandstorms, while the gating mechanism ensures that the UNet prioritizes the most relevant features within each frame. This combination enhances the accuracy and robustness of sandstorm segmentation compared to the standard UNet architecture. The proposed model was evaluated on regional (Egypt) and global (Saudi Arabia, and Turkmenistan). The obtained results demonstrated improved precision and robustness in sandstorm segmentation compared to standard UNet architecture. It outperformed baseline models, achieving an average of 5% accuracy improvement, 10% recall increase, 4% precision boost, and 1% F1-Score gain.
