Progress in Organic Coatings
Abstract:Flexible coatings exhibit great potential for reducing drag force in marine navigation due to their low cost, simplicity, and no additional energy requirements. However, conventional flexible coatings typically possess relatively low drag reduction efficiency. Herein, inspired by the combination of flexibility and surface mucus layer of eel skin, we have developed a bionic coating (PU/H x A y ) with high drag reduction performance. This bio-inspired coating uses flexible polyurethane (PU) as the primer layer. Through UV-triggered surface anchoring technology, the synthesized poly(HEMA- co -AA-co-BPA) was firmly grafted on the surface of PU primer to form a highly hydrophilic layer. The synergistic effect of flexible primer and hydrophilic layer results in a remarkable drag reduction rate of up to ∼18.7 % within a flow velocity range of 1 m/s to 5 m/s. Moreover, the bio-inspired coating exhibits excellent adhesion to the substrate material and high resistance to water immersion. Owing to its high-efficiency and versatility in various application scenarios, this coating provides new insights for the design and development of marine transportation equipment with low energy consuming and fast sailing speed.
