Abstract:Though nonprofit management literature frequently discusses the importance of communication and cultivating relationships with donors, members, and volunteers, research on how individuals process organizational messages is sparse. This study proposes a model theoretically based on communicative action problem solving that details a sequential chain of communicative actions that predict behavioral intentions to support organizations. Using an online survey of members of a state museum ( n = 363), this study found support for how individuals process organizational messages. Specifically, individuals that perceive a strong relationship with an organization are more likely to seek out information from or about that organization. After seeking out information, individuals filter messaging to keep the most helpful content while ignoring other content before ultimately sharing those messages with their personal network. Through sequential mediation analysis, the data supports the hypothesized order of active communication processes and extends the conceptual linkages discussed by nonprofit management literature between organization-public relationships and behavioral outcomes.

Abstract:On the bases of relationship marketing and social capital, this paper aims to explore whether museums’ external relationships depend on managers and internal relationships as well as on mode of governance. The empirical findings of a hierarchical regression analysis for a sample of 556 museums indicate that close relationships with the external environment require managerial social capital and a supportive culture that favours internal cohesion. Finally, public museums directly run by government entities remain too bureaucratic and lack incentives to promote internal cohesion as well as relationships with customers and other stakeholders. Implications for managers are discussed.

Abstract:<p>While public museums in advanced economies operate in constrained funding environments after public sector efficiency drives, there has not been a common sector‐wide response. Museums cope differently with tensions between the two logics of consequences and of appropriateness, which are mapped in this study based on annual reports. A 'logic of appropriateness' in adapting traditional curatorial missions to include social and political objectives, expanding access, fostering an ethical and inclusive climate, pursuing broader policy objectives, sustainability, and innovation, and providing a forum for contradictory debate and non‐nationalistic expression, varies substantially across organizations. There has been a wider embrace of a 'logic of consequences' with targets to increase nongovernment income, ambitious renovation and expansion projects, digitization and interactive audience engagement, and greater consideration given to resource allocation. Many museums now favor temporary 'blockbuster' exhibitions to attract financial sponsors and ticket sales, which also appeals to more privileged constituencies and philanthropic supporters.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:ABSTRACT The relationship management perspective and research on organization–public relationships have dominated the pages of public relations journals for decades. This has resulted in scholarship that heavily focuses on organization–public relationships, while overlooking other relationships that organizations strive to cultivate through their public relations efforts. This study applied the devotional campaign framework to addresses gaps in relationship management research regarding other relationships organizations strive to foster, including intra-stakeholder relationships and relationships with an object of devotion. Results from a mixed method case study, including a quantitative content analysis of 820 public relations materials and interviews with communication employees within a religious organization, suggest that organizations strive to foster organization–public relationships, a relationship between stakeholders and an object of devotion, and intra-stakeholder relationships. Findings advance relationship management theory and provide an updated framework for analyzing relational goals and messages in public relations materials.

Abstract:3 Abstract: This study builds on the public relations theory of organization-public relationships (OPRs) by exploring the role of ethics as a precursor to building OPRs. We qualitatively explore the existing relationship variables in the context of ethical behavior as a precursor to building authentic, long-term relationships with publics that will eventually benefit an organization's effectiveness and reputation. These variables have not yet been explored in terms of ethics. We conducted elite inter- views with public relations professionals of North America, Europe, and Asia who were either: (1) chief communications officers at the top of responsibility in the pub- lic relations function or (2) highly placed public relations professionals involved in the agency world who are in charge of regions or the heads of independent consul- tancies. Prior studies show that trust is a crucial variable of OPR and building on that foundation, we examine how ethics and trust are interrelated as part of complex relationships. Our research contributes to the foundation of ethics in building trust in both OPRs and the excellence theory within public relations. This study provides analysis and implications for the public relations industry in the use of ethics as a precursor to OPR, to build relationships between organizations and publics.

In 1978, the first World Assembly of Public Relations Associations agreed that PR ‘is the art and social science of analyzing trends, predicting their consequences, counseling organisational leaders and implementing programmes of action that will serve both the organisations and the public interest’ (Mexican Statement). The structure of the PR industry is straightforward consisting of organisations, publics and channels. It is the role of promotion that is often referred to as marketing communications helping the organisation to connect, build relationships with and sell products/services to customers.

Abstract:Since the advent of the contract culture, the reduction in museum budgets, and the implementation of performance measures based on customer satisfaction management, museums have faced increasing pressure to attract wider audiences. This requires an understanding of visitor expectations, and experiences, of visiting a museum. However, for the most part, public museums have concentrated their research efforts into obtaining statistical data which measure through‐put and provide demographic profiles, ignoring in the process the nature of the experience itself. This paper looks at research derived primarily from academics working in the field of visitor studies. It outlines three approaches; the social, the cognitive, and the environmental perspective, which have been applied to studies of museum visitor behaviour. The paper then presents the findings from an observational study of visitors to a city museum. These findings are recast in the light of the three approaches described, in order to offer an integrated framework of customer behaviour which has implications for the management of the service encounter in museums.

Abstract:Museum education is a complex and specialized endeavour, even more so when involving partnerships with schools. In this paper, we engage with theories that support understanding of museum-educator pedagogies. Dewey's notion of occupations is explored as offering a better theorization of pedagogical possibilities than that available through ideas associated with identity. Museum-educator pedagogies shape occupations, as the coherence of interest-purpose-meaning. Such shaping is not a purely individual human action, as occupations are social and material, as being-in-the-world. Heidegger's phenomenological understanding of the working of art, critiqued by Schapiro, enables further comprehension of this pedagogical working. Both theories together provide insights into museum-educator pedagogies as expressive of the always challenging art of education.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This study offers an alternative conceptual framework for an integrated understanding of public relations practice globally. It investigates the relationships between political, economic, and media constructs and relationship management in public relations by building upon an environmental framework for understanding public relations. Based on a survey of public relations practitioners in Singapore, this study positions relationship management as a conceptual locus for public relations theory and practice. Four environmental variables—perceptions of the degree of democracy in the political system, level of economic development, level of economic freedom, and level of media freedom—are found to be associated with public relations practitioners’ orientation toward relationship management, based on Hon and Grunig’s relationship management scale.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Although the relational approach has been a focus in many published public relations studies, the dynamic and longitudinal aspects of relationships deserve more exploration. Through explicating and examining the concept of contingent organization-public relationship (COPR) in two empirical studies, this article investigates relationships between corporations and activist publics, and provides dynamic instances of the value of COPR and its six modes in conflictual situations. By tracking the stances of each corporation and its activists longitudinally through content analysis, results generate the occurrence and changes of relationship modes over time. Findings show that COPR is equally applicable in both resolved and unresolved U.S. conflicts. Regardless of whether the problems were resolved or not, competing relationships occurred more frequently than cooperating relationships, which strengthens the argument that both parties maintain competing relationships for self-interests and may adopt strategies to achieve mutual benefits as well. The integrating of the contingency theory of accommodation into the relationship management paradigm shows great promise reflected in current findings as well as future directions.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for urban public space construction, the use of public art has become increasingly important. At the same time, museums are gradually emerging as an indispensable "third space" in the city. Therefore, it is necessary for us to think deeply about how to achieve a complementary and mutually beneficial relationship between museums and public art. This paper takes the spirit of place as theoretical guidance, combines examples of domestic and foreign museums, and specifically analyzes the design path for museums to build public art to shape the spirit of place. This paper studies how museum public art can narrate strategies from external spaces, use media to restore internal scenes, fit in with the natural environment, and explore the "third space" of urban spirit is constructed from four aspects of regional context. This paper proposed that with the intervention of public art, museums should comprehensively consider multiple factors such as design, overall environment and correlation, pay attention to the overall correlation between design and system environment, and focus on the audience's sense of identity and belonging to build the spirit of place.

Abstract:This article offers a thorough examination of the relationship between media and public relations by reviewing previous literature. It introduces theories and models in the field of media including a two-way symmetrical model of communication, uses and gratifications theory and corporate social responsibility, highlights the significance of social media which has been rapidly evolving and argues for the strategic incorporation of both conventional and digital platforms. Simultaneously, this paper offers a critique of the excessive integration and commercialization of media and public relations. It contends that news pertaining to public relations may exhibit a limited scope and may mislead audiences. Furthermore, the study proposes recommendations for future research and growth in this field. Through a comprehensive comprehension and strategic utilization of media impact, professionals in the field of public relations are able to adeptly traverse the ever-changing terrain, successfully engage a wide range of audiences, and effectively address a multitude of practical challenges.

Abstract:Tapping into an organization’s stories provides an opportunity to examine the organization’s culture and promotes understanding of ways an organization represents itself. Using a communication audit research method to examine organizational culture at a healthcare facility in the southeastern United States during a major change, the study reported in this chapter examines interplay among public relations (PR), human resources (HR) management, and corporate social responsibility or sustainability programs. Use of this research method enabled identification of consistently recurring cultural themes. The results provide support for PR and HR playing an integral role in advocating for and supporting the culture of organizations, although that role may be more implicit than explicit. Findings suggest that corporate social responsibility can be an integral part of organizational culture, and may work best – serving as a source of employee pride – if efforts develop organically from within the organization with employee support.

Abstract:The global upheaval caused by events in 2020 and beyond – from navigating a pandemic to an American reckoning with long-standing issues of race and inequality – has placed the public voice front and center. Public discourse now plays an essential role in shaping organizational policy and practice. This article posits that in response, public relations must take a "next turn" theoretically in a way that prioritizes the public voice. As such, guided by the perspectives of LGBTQIA advocacy leaders in the post-Obergefell (post-marriage-equality) era, this article argues that the field must shift from a focus on relationship management to one on change empowerment. In so doing, it contends that if we are going to truly take a next turn to focus on the public in this post-2020 context, then theoretically we must better-address the influence and process of change – emanating from internal and external forces. This article also contends that while public relations certainly remains a management function, the lessons from 2020 mandate that we question our field's focus on "managing" relationships and instead investigate how public relations can become a source of empowerment.

Abstract:The article answers the research question: under what conditions and with what methods would museum visitors feel comfortable (and not comfortable) sharing sensitive information for the purposes of museum research or evaluation? We ground our study in literature about sharing personal information in person, online, and in the context of digital marketing and social media. In our interviews of n = 114 science center visitors, we found that while majorities would share sensitive information in person with an evaluator, age and gender were important factors in predicting whether or not someone feels comfortable doing so in public settings or with tablet questionnaires. We then discuss the ethical importance of giving visitors choice in whether to and how to share their information for the purposes of evaluation.
