Abstract:Introduction Although Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) has a high prevalence and suicidal risk is 20 times higher than in the general population, studies in Latin America on factors associated with suicidal risk are scarce. Methods We conducted a retrospective study with geriatric outpatients with MDD (DSM-IV) from our Department of Psychiatry. Patients were required to have a complete psychiatric history, MINI interview and HAMD, and CGI scores. We compared sociodemographic factors and the severity of depression between patients with and without SR. Results 162 patients were included, 69.29 + SD 6.93 years old (60 to 91), 113 women (69.8%), HAMD (25.20 + SD 6,01), and CGI (4.72 +SD 0.78). According to the MINI, 155 (95.7%) patients had SR, 106 females (68.4%), 69.34 +SD 6.96 years old. We found no differences in age, education, and severity of depression between groups of patients with and without SR. A correlation between higher risk for suicide (MINI total score and higher suicidal ideation in the HAMD scale was found (r=0.502, p=<.01). Furthermore, 75 (46,3%) patients had moderate and high scores for SR in the MINI scale, HAMD (25.53 + SD 5.51) and CGI (4.77 + SD 0.79). Conclusions We observed a high incidence of SR in geriatric patients according to the MINI scale [n=155 (95.7%)], with a higher prevalence in females. However, no differences in the severity of depression scales were found when compared groups with SR. Additionally, a correlation between MINI scores and suicidal ideation in the HAMD scale was identified. Our findings in Latin American patients with MDD and SR need to be replicated in further studies.
