Abstract:In this paper we study the fragmentation of a parton into a jet containing a heavy quark. When heavy quarks are involved in a jet, the quark mass can lead to a numerically significant correction to the jet cross section and its substructure. With this motivation, we calculated the heavy quark mass effects to next-to-leading order in $\alpha_s$ on the fragmentation functions to a jet (FFJs) and the jet fragmentation functions (JFFs), where the former describes fragmentation of parton into a jet and the latter describes fragmenting processes inside a jet. The finite size of the heavy quark mass does not change the ultraviolet behaviors, but it can give significant corrections to the finite contributions. When we take the zero mass limit, we find that the FFJs and the JFFs reproduce established results for massless partons. If we define the heavy quark jet as one that include at least one heavy (anti-)quark, the tagged heavy quark jet production is sensitive to the heavy quark mass and produces large logarithms of the mass. Taking advantage of the FFJs and JFFs, we formulate a factorization theorem for heavy quark jet production in order to resum these large logarithms systematically. As an application, we study inclusive $b$-jet production and show phenomenological implications due to keeping a non-zero quark mass.

Notably, the same error persisted in the computational routines used in our work. This oversight resulted in a discrepancy in the numerical calculation of the invisible Higgs decay branching fraction, Br(h 1 → JJ), affecting a subset of the sampled points. While the main conclusions remain unaltered, we provide an updated version of our results.

Abstract:We correct a mistake in the analytical expression for the energy density given in Phys. Rev. C76, 021902 (2007) [arXiv:0704.3625 [hep-ph]]. The expression should be multiplied by 16. One question then arises; how could it be possible to explain this difference between the analytical and numerical results in the same model if both are correct? We find a subtle problem in the treatment of the randomness of the color source along the longitudinal direction and the treatment of the longitudinal extent of the color source.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the heavy quark (HQ) mass effects on the transverse momentum dependent fragmentation function (TMDFF). We first calculate the one-loop TMDFF initiated by a heavy quark. We then investigate the HQ TMDFF in the limit where the transverse momentum, $q_\perp$ is small compared to the heavy quark mass, $q_\perp \ll m$ and also in the opposite limit where $q_\perp \gg m$. As applications of the HQ TMDFF, we study the HQ transverse momentum dependent jet fragmentation function, where the heavy quark fragments into a jet containing a heavy hadron, and we investigate a heavy hadron's transverse momentum dependent distribution with respect to the thrust axis in $e^+e^-$ collisions.

Abstract:Recent progress in the study of jet modification in hot medium and its consequences in high-energy heavy-ion collisions is reviewed. In particular, I will discuss energy loss for propagating heavy quarks and the resulting modified fragmentation function. Medium modification of the parton fragmentation function due to quark recombination is formulated within finite temperature field theory and the implication for the search for a deconfined quark-gluon plasma is also discussed.

Abstract:In the version of VISHNU used in the original paper, the baryon-antibaryon annihilation channels in the hadron cascade module UrQMD were accidentally turned off. When redoing the calculations with those channels turned on, we found that baryon-antibaryon annihilation in the late hadronic stage reduces the final proton and antiproton multiplicities by about 30% in central (0–5% centrality) and by about 15% in peripheral (60–70% centrality) collisions while simultaneously slightly increasing the pion and kaon multiplicities. These observations are consistent with recent analyses presented in Refs. [1,2]. To compensate for the resulting slight overall increase in the final total charged hadron multiplicity when using the corrected version of VISHNU, we had to reduce the normalization of initial entropy density by about 4%. Keeping the original parameter sets for η/s and τ0(η/s), we confirmed that (within the statistical uncertainties of the results presented in the original paper) the changes in the hydrodynamic evolution caused by this slight renormalization of the initial density profile are negligible, and the main effects of including B−B̄ annihilation are a small change in the chemical composition of the hadron gas phase, as well as a renormalization and slight hardening of the proton pT spectra. The hardening of the proton spectra arises from preferential annihilation of low-pT baryons and antibaryons.

Theoretical Developments for Jets in Heavy-Ion Collisions

Abstract:The quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is an exotic phase of matter, composed of deconfined quarks and gluons and is briefly created in heavy-ion collisions (HIC) at the LHC and at the RHIC. High-energy, self-collimated structures of final-state particles also created in HIC, called jets, probe the QGP, piercing through it on their way to the particle detector. Quantum field theory at finite temperature or thermal field theory, is then an extremely powerful tool, capable of analytically quantifying how such a high-energy object interacts with a weakly coupled thermal bath. In this thesis, we work towards the computation of corrections to two quantities, which dictate how jets are quenched by the QGP. The first being the transverse momentum broadening coefficient, which describes how the jet diffuses in transverse momentum space through its interaction with the medium. We focus on the computation of logarithmically enhanced corrections, carefully showing how the thermal scale affects the logarithmic phase space. The second is the asymptotic mass, which can be thought of as a shift in the jet dispersion relation as it undergoes forward scattering with the medium. We complete a matching calculation, which rids the mass' classical corrections of any unphysical divergences, while also beginning the completion of its full two-loop, quantum corrections.
