Abstract:BackgroundForms of sexual harassment occur in almost all professional, social and societal areas. Those affected often suffer from physical and, above all, psychological problems. Sexual harassment is still a taboo subject that is trivialized and concealed. The aim of the study is to determine whether and in what forms sexual harassment takes place during paramedic training.MethodsThe study is a multicenter cross-sectional study of emergency paramedic trainees in Germany. In the period from November 7, 2022 to December 5, 2022, an online questionnaire on forms of sexual harassment was sent to all paramedic schools in Germany using the SoSci Survey (Munich, Germany). The statistical analysis was carried out descriptively using the program IBM SPSS Statistics Version 25 (IBM Corporation, Armonk, NY, USA).ResultsIn 707 evaluable questionnaires, at least one form of sexual harassment was reported in 378 (53.5%) cases. Sexual innuendo, obscene jokes, gestures and comments were reported most frequently by 258 (68.3%) trainees. In 9 (2.4%) cases, trainees reported sexual harassment through physical violence, sexual coercion and rape. Female trainees reported sexual harassment in 299 (79.1%) cases, male trainees in 78 (20.6%) cases and miscellaneous trainees in 1 (0.3%) cases. The rescue station was named by 322 (85.2%) trainees as the most frequent place of sexual harassment.ConclusionThe most common forms of sexual harassment can probably often go unnoticed by outsiders. Sexual harassment begins where personal and especially signaled boundaries are crossed.
