Abstract:Elasticity solutions for bi-directional functionally graded beams subjected to arbitrary lateral loads are conducted, with emphasis on the end effects. The material is considered macroscopically isotropic, with Young's modulus varying exponentially in both axial and thickness directions, while Poisson's ratio remaining constant. In order to obtain an exact analysis of stress and displacement fields, the symplectic analysis based on Hamiltonian state space approach is employed. The capability of the symplectic framework for exact analysis of bi-directional functionally graded beams has been validated by comparing numerical results with corresponding ones in open literature. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the influences of the material gradations on localized stress distributions. Thus, the material properties of the bi-directional functionally graded beam can be tailored for the potential practical purpose by choosing suitable graded indices.
A New Derivation of the Buckling Theory of Thin-Walled Beams

Abstract:There existed two formulae at present for calculation of flexural-torsional buckling moments of thin-walled beams with monosymmetric I-sections. This paper compared the stability theories from which these formulae were derived. This paper presented a buckling analysis of I-sectional beams based on the stability theory of shells, which is certainly superior to the beam theories because fewer assumptions are adopted to establish the shell buckling theory. Totally 36 I-sectional beams were analyzed using the FEM program ANSYS, among which 12 have doubly symmetrical sections, 12 tensile flange strengthened and 12 compressed flange enlarged. The element SHELL63 was used in the analysis. It was found that the shell buckling analysis verified the traditional formula, not the newer, seemly more rational theory. This paper presented a new derivation of the flexural-torsional buckling theory of thin-walled beams. This new derivation, which is in agreement with the results of shell buckling analysis, verified the traditional formula.
A Controversy and Its Settlement in the Calculation of Buckling Moments of Thin-walled Beams with Monosymmetrical I-sections under Distributed Loads

Abstract:There exists two different formulae at present for calculation of lateral torsional buckling moments of thin walled beams with monosymmetric I sections, one being traditional formula on which the structural steel Codes GBJ17-88 and GBJ18-87 are based, the other is the newly proposed one. This paper compares the stability theories from which these formulae were derived. New questions are presented for the newer theory. In order to answer these questions, this paper presents a buckling analysis of I sectional beams based on the stability theory of shells, which is absolutely superior to the member theory because fewer assumptions are used to establish the shell buckling theory. A total of 36 I sectional beams have been analyzed using the universal FEM program ANSYS, among which 12 have doubly symmetrical sections, 12 are tensile flange strengthened and 12 are compressive flange strengthened. The element SHELL63 is used in the analysis. The shell buckling analysis verifies that the traditional formula, but not the new one, seems to be more rational. This paper presents a new formulation of the lateral torsional buckling theory of thin walled beams under transversely distributed loads. The proposed theory, which is in good agreement with the results of shell buckling analysis, verifies the traditional formula and makes the traditional theory more perfect.

Abstract:The buckling of thin rectangular plates with non-linearly distributed compressive loading on two opposite sides received lesser attention than the one with uniformly or linearly distributed loads. The problem is considerably more complicated since it requires that first the plane elasticity problem be solved to obtain the distribution of in-plane stresses, and then the buckling problem is solved. Since it is difficult to obtain the analytical solutions accurately with a few series terms for the in-plane problem, very few analytical solutions have been available in the literature thus far. Therefore, the problem is analyzed by using differential quadrature (DQ) method. Detailed formulations and solution procedures are given herein. Nine combinations of boundary conditions and various aspect ratios are considered. Comparisons are made with finite element data obtained by NASTRAN with very fine meshes and existing analytical or numerical solutions. It is found that fast convergent rate can be achieved by the DQ method with non-uniform grids. And the first known accurate results are given herein.

Abstract:Recently, the present authors proposed a simple mixed Ritz-differential quadrature (DQ) methodology for free and forced vibration, and buckling analysis of rectangular plates. In this technique, the Ritz method is first used to discretize the spatial partial derivatives with respect to a coordinate direction of the plate. The DQ method is then employed to analogize the resulting system of ordinary or partial differential equations. The mixed method was shown to work well for vibration and buckling problems of rectangular plates with simple boundary conditions. But, due to the use of conventional Ritz method in one coordinate direction of the plate, the geometric boundary conditions of the problem can only be satisfied in that direction. Therefore, the conventional mixed Ritz-DQ methodology may encounter difficulties when dealing with rectangular plates involving adjacent free edges and skew plates. To overcome this difficulty, this paper presents a modified mixed Ritz-DQ formulation in which all the natural boundary conditions are exactly implemented. The versatility, accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method for free vibration analysis of thick rectangular and skew plates are tested against other solution procedures. It is revealed that the proposed method can produce highly accurate solutions for the natural frequencies of thick rectangular plates involving adjacent free edges and skew plates using a small number Ritz terms and DQ sampling points.
Buckling of Simply Supported Thin Plate with Variable Thickness under Bi-Axial Compression Using Perturbation Technique

Abstract:An analytical research on buckling of simply supported thin plate with variable thickness under bi-axial compression is presented in this paper. Combining the perturbation technique, Fourier series expansion and Galerkin methods, the linear governing differential equation of the plate with arbitrary thickness variation under bi-axial compression is solved and the analytical expression of the critical buckling load is obtained. Based on that, numerical analysis is carried out for the plates with different thickness variation forms and aspect ratios under different bi-axial compressions. Four different thickness variation forms including linear, parabolic, stepped and trigonometric have been considered in this paper. The calculated critical buckling loads and buckling modes are presented and compared with the published results in the tables and figures. It shows that the analytical expressions derived by the theoretical method in this paper can be effectively used for buckling analysis of simply supported thin plates with arbitrary thickness variation, especially for the stepped thickness that used in engineering widely.

Abstract:In this paper a mixed method, which combines the state space method and the differential quadrature method, is proposed for bending and free vibration of arbitrarily thick beams resting on a Pasternak elastic foundation. Based on the two-dimensional state equation of elasticity, the domain along the axial direction is discretized according to the principle of differential quadrature (DQ). As a result, the state equations about the variables at discrete points are established. With consideration of the end conditions and the upper and lower boundary conditions in the derived state equations, governing equations for bending and free vibration problems are formulated. Numerical results prove that the present approach is very efficient and reliable. The effects of Poisson's ratio and foundation parameters on the natural frequencies are discussed.

Abstract:A new method of state-space-based differential quadrature is presented for free vibration of generally laminated beams. By discretizing the state space formulations along the axial direction using the technique of differential quadrature, new state equations at discrete points are established. Applying end conditions and using matrix theory, the general solution is derived. Taking account of the boundary conditions at the top and bottom planes, frequency equation governing the free vibration of generally laminated beams is then formulated. The method is validated by comparing numerical results with that available in the literature.

Abstract:Double-beam systems composed of two interconnected parallel beams have become basic mechanical components of modern engineering structures. Focusing on the asymmetric features in boundary conditions and other structural parameters, this paper studies the buckling and postbuckling behaviors of a double-beam system supported on an elastic foundation. The nonlinear governing differential equations of the system are derived by using the Hamilton's principle, and discretized via the differential quadrature method. Then the pseudo-arc length algorithm is adopted to overcome difficulties of numerical continuation around bifurcation points. Compared with single beam systems, double-beam systems exhibit some peculiarities like multivalued critical buckling loads, in-phase and out-of-phase postbuckling paths. Based on the proposed procedures, these buckling and postbuckling behaviors are investigated in detail. For symmetric boundary cases of the two sub-beams, the multivalued critical buckling loads of the system compose a cluster of critical curves that intersect at a point determined only by the critical loads of single beams. Hence a simple criterion based on single beam critical loads is proposed to quickly estimate whether or not the axial loads would trigger the buckling of the system. However for asymmetric boundary cases, the cluster of critical curves locate in a region that depends on the intrinsic double-beam characteristics, and the criterion is revised accordingly. Also for asymmetric systems, some unique features of the out-of-phase postbuckling paths are detected. It is found that their stabilities are quite different from those of symmetric systems, and that strengthening the system stiffness may even trigger the out-of-phase buckling more easily.

Abstract:Abstract A thorough examination of the use of the differential quadrature method has been presented, including an analysis of the weighting coefficient, several methods for implementing the boundary conditions, and the ultimate advantages it offers compared to other numerical techniques. The authors have detailed the technical techniques involved in this study, including the discretization of the computational domain, the generation of mass, damping, and stiffness matrices, and the subsequent partitioning of these matrices into submatrices. Exemplifications have been given for the differential quadrature (DQ) approaches that meet the clamped-spring support boundary requirement. This study on the principles of the differential quadrature technique will provide valuable insights for a research scholar, novice researcher, and academician in the field of computation.

Abstract:A higher-order theory for laminated composite beams is used to study the free vibration of laminated composite beams, and the differential quadrature method is employed to obtain the numerical solution of the governing differential equations. Free vibration analysis of beams with rectangular cross-section for various combinations of end conditions is studied. The results show that the differential quadrature method is reliable and accurate compared with other available results.

Abstract:The state space method coupled with the technique of differential quadrature (SSDQM) was presented for plane stress problems. Based on the two-dimensional state equations of elasticity, the axial domain of a beam was discretized according to the principle of differential quadrature and thus the state equations with respect to the variables at discrete points were established. Application of end conditions and the hypothesis of Winkler foundation model to the state equations yielded the frequency equation governing the free-vibrating beams. The present method was validated as sufficiently proficient by comparison of the numerical results with the exact solutions based on elasticity using trigonometric functions for simply supported beams. Numerical experiments indicate that the natural frequency parameter increases with the growth of foundation modulus and aspect ratio (length/depth) of the beam.
Triangular differential quadrature for bending analysis of reissner plates with curved boundaries

Abstract:The recently proposed concept of the triangular differential quadrature method (TDQM) is applied to the bending analysis of Reissner plates with various curvilinear geometries subjected to various combinations of boundary conditions. A unit isosceles right triangle is used as the standard triangle for all the derivatives expressed using the triangular differential quadrature rule. Geometric transformations are introduced using basis functions to determine the weighting coefficients for the triangular differential quadrature to map an arbitrary curvilinear triangle into the standard triangle. The triangular differential quadrature method provides good accuracy and rapid convergence relative to other available exact and numerical results.

Abstract:In this paper the recently proposed weak form quadrature element method is applied to high order beam analysis. Differing from other numerical methods, only one element is needed in the weak form quadrature element analysis as long as the cross-section of the beam is constant or varies continuously. Flexural, vibrational and eigenbuckling analyses of homogeneous beams are performed based on the Bickford beam theory. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of the developed method.

Abstract:An analytical spectral stiffness method is proposed for the efficient and accurate buckling analysis of rectangular plates on Winkler foundation subject to general boundary conditions (BCs). The method combines the advantages of superposition method, stiffness-based method and the Wittrick-Williams algorithm. First, exact general solutions of the governing differential equation (GDE) of plate buckling considering both elastic foundation and biaxial loading is derived by using a modified Fourier series. The superposition of such general solutions satisfy the GDE exactly and BCs approximately, which guarantees the rapid convergence and high accuracy. Then, based on the exact general solution, the spectral stiffness matrix which relates the coefficients of plate generalised displacement BCs and force BCs is symbolically developed. As a result, arbitrary BCs can be prescribed straightforwardly in the stiffness-based model. As an efficient and reliable solution technique, the Wittrick-Williams algorithm with the J0 problem resolved is applied to obtain the critical buckling solutions. The accuracy and efficiency of the method are verified by comparing with other methods. Benchmark buckling solutions are provided for plates with all possible boundary conditions. Also, dependence of various factors such as foundation stiffness, load combinations and aspect ratio on the buckling behaviours are investigated.

Abstract:In this article, a weak form quadrature element formulation of geometrically exact beam with deformable crosssection is developed. The formulation aims to provide a computationally efficient numerical scheme for analyzing prismatic thin-walled beams undergoing in-plane distortions, out-of-plane warping, large displacements and rotations. Within the framework of generalized beam theory (GBT), the cross-section kinematic is described by a set of predetermined cross-sectional deformation modes to allow for distortions and warping. The generalized differential quadrature method is employed for derivative approximations of GBT mode weighting coefficients with C1 continuity requirements brought about by the Kirchhoff's assumption. For validation purposes, several numerical tests are conducted and presented. It is demonstrated that this formulation provides reliable solutions of geometrically nonlinear thin-walled beams with cross-sectional deformations, while significantly fewer numbers of degrees of freedom (DOFs) are required compared to existing beam or shell models.
Modified Buckling Modes For Lateral-Torsional Buckling Of Beams

Abstract:Lateral-torsional buckling of beams is analyzed by the Rayleigh-Ritz method. A unified approach is used to determine the admissible trial functions which satisfy the boundary conditions at the ends and intermediate supports of continuous beams. To satisfy the boundary conditions at the intermediate supports, a power series is superimposed onto the conventional single-span column buckling modes. These modified buckling modes are then taken as the admissible trial functions for subsequent formulation of the eigen-problem. The critical load can be easily computed using a modified inverse iteration method. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the method.

Abstract:The title problem is investigated using the differential quadrature method based on the state‐space formalism. The plates, with mixed boundary conditions, may cross over one‐way internal rigid line supports that impose zero transverse displacement constraints. Differential quadrature procedure is applied in the direction of line supports, while exact solution is sought in the transfer domain perpendicular to the line supports using the state space method. To avoid numerical instability in the transfer matrix method, joint coupling matrices are introduced, mainly according to the continuity conditions at line joints. Natural frequencies of rectangular Kirchhoff plates with general boundary conditions are calculated and compared with the results from other methods. Effects of location of internal line supports and the mixed boundary conditions on the frequency parameters are discussed. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:This paper intends to present two-dimensional elasticity solutions for static problem of thick laminated composite beams using a hybrid method of state-space-based differential quadrature. The technique of differential quadrature is employed to reduce the partial differential state equations into the ordinary differential ones at all arbitrary sampling points for each individual laminate. General solution to the assembled state equation is then obtained according to the matrix theory. Taking account of the continuity conditions at the interfaces of all the adjacent lamina, a relationship between state variables at the top and bottom surfaces of the beam is established through a global transfer matrix. After incorporating the boundary conditions at these two surfaces, an eigenvalue equation for static problem is then derived. Numerical examples are presented, through which the accuracy and convergence characteristics of the present method are investigated. It is shown that the present method is of excellent efficiency for laminated composite thick beams subjected to arbitrary end supporting conditions.

Abstract:Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to highlight the implementation of a recently developed weak form quadrature element method for nonlinear free vibrations of Timoshenko beams subjected to three different boundary conditions.Design/methodology/approach– The design of the paper is based on considering the geometrically nonlinear effects of axial strain, bending curvature, and shear strain. Then the quadrature element formulation of the beam is introduced.Findings– The efficiency of the method is demonstrated by a convergence study. Ratios of the nonlinear fundamental frequencies to the corresponding linear frequencies are extracted. Their variations with the ratio of amplitude to radius of gyration and the slenderness ratio are examined. The effects of the nonlinearity on higher order frequencies and mode shapes are also investigated.Originality/value– The computed results show fast convergence and compare well with available literature results.
