Entropy
Abstract:The paper analyzes the probability distribution of the occupancy numbers and the entropy of a system at the equilibrium composed by an arbitrary number of non-interacting bosons. The probability distribution is obtained through two approaches: one involves tracing out the environment from a bosonic eigenstate of the combined environment and system of interest (the empirical approach), while the other involves tracing out the environment from the mixed state of the combined environment and system of interest (the Bayesian approach). In the thermodynamic limit, the two coincide and are equal to the multinomial distribution. Furthermore, the paper proposes to identify the physical entropy of the bosonic system with the Shannon entropy of the occupancy numbers, fixing certain contradictions that arise in the classical analysis of thermodynamic entropy. Finally, by leveraging an information-theoretic inequality between the entropy of the multinomial distribution and the entropy of the multivariate hypergeometric distribution, Bayesianism of information theory and empiricism of statistical mechanics are integrated into a common "infomechanical" framework.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve The paper "Entropy of Canonical Occupation States (Macro - states) in Quantum Measurement Theory" attempts to solve the following problems: 1. **Probability distribution of occupation numbers**: The paper analyzes the probability distribution of occupation numbers in a system composed of an arbitrary number of non - interacting bosons at equilibrium. The author obtains this probability distribution through two methods: - **Empirical method**: Trace out the environment from the boson eigenstates of the combination of the environment and the system of interest. - **Bayesian method**: Trace out the environment from the mixed state of the combination of the environment and the system of interest. 2. **Definition and consistency of entropy**: The paper proposes to equate the physical entropy of the boson system with the Shannon entropy of the occupation numbers to resolve certain contradictions in the classical thermodynamic entropy analysis. Specifically, the author attempts to solve the problem of entropy inconsistency due to the indistinguishability of particles in the classical analysis. 3. **Unification of information theory and statistical mechanics**: By using the information - theoretic inequality between the entropy of the multi - dimensional hypergeometric distribution and the entropy of the multinomial distribution, the paper integrates the Bayesian method of information theory and the empirical method of statistical mechanics into a common "information mechanics" framework. ### Main contributions - **Consistency of probability distributions**: In the thermodynamic limit, the probability distributions obtained by the empirical method and the Bayesian method are consistent and both equal to the multinomial distribution. - **Redefinition of physical entropy**: Defining the physical entropy of the boson system as the Shannon entropy of the occupation numbers resolves the contradictions in the classical analysis. - **Unification of information theory and statistical mechanics**: By introducing an information - theoretic inequality, the Bayesian method and the empirical method are unified to form a comprehensive theoretical framework. ### Formula presentation 1. **Probability distribution of occupation numbers**: \[ n_c(c_1, c_2, \ldots, c_N)=\sum_{i = 1}^N\delta(c - c_i),\quad c = 1,2,\ldots,|C| \] \[ W(\bar{n})=\begin{cases} \frac{N!}{\prod_{c = 1}^{|C|}n_c!},&n_c\geq0,\forall c\in C\\ 0,&\text{elsewhere} \end{cases} \] 2. **Multi - dimensional hypergeometric distribution**: \[ P_{\bar{u}}(\bar{n})=\frac{W(\bar{u}-\bar{n})W(\bar{n})}{W(\bar{u})}=\prod_{c = 1}^{|C|}\binom{u_c}{n_c}\bigg/\binom{U}{N} \] 3. **Multinomial distribution**: \[ \lim_{U\rightarrow\infty}P_{\bar{u}}(\bar{n})=W(\bar{n})\prod_{c = 1}^{|C|}(P(c))^{n_c} \] 4. **von Neumann entropy**: \[ S(\hat{\nu})=-\sum_{\bar{n}\in N}P(\bar{n})\log(P(\bar{n})) \] 5. **Entropy after separation of the system and the environment**: \[ S(\hat{\nu}_u)=\log(W(\bar{u})) - E\{\log(W(\bar{u}-\bar{n}))\} - E\{\log(W(\bar{n}))\} \] \[ S(\hat{\nu}_u)=-E\{\log(P_{\bar{u}}(\bar{c}))\} - \log(N!)+\sum_{c = 1}^{|C|}E\{\log(n_c!)\} \] 6. **Entropy in the canonical case**: \[ S(\ha
