Abstract:Objective An experimental model of severe soft tissue damage was designed to simulate high-energy fracture and observe the fracture healing process following early surgery and surgery delayed by 1 week. Methods Forty dogs were randomized to Group A (immediate surgery) and B (delayed surgery). The femur was broken, and the two ends were forcefully stabbed to damage the surrounding soft tissues. The fracture was repaired using a custom six-hole steel plate. Four dogs were killed on day 3 and weeks 1, 2, 4, and 8 following bone fracture. Soft tissue and bone were examined by light and electron microscopy. Results In Group A, no callus was present at 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks following fracture, resulting in atrophic nonunion. In Group B, visible weak external callus was present 1 week following fracture, and good external callus growth was present at 2, 4, and 8 weeks, leading to callus healing. Conclusion These findings suggest that the first week is critical for fracture healing. Absence of callus in the early stage is indicative of absence of callus growth throughout the entire healing process, while the presence of callus in the early stage is indicative of vigorous callus growth thereafter.
Owner-reported treatments and outcomes of perceived injuries to the thoracic and pelvic limb of agility dogs

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the type of veterinary care sought by handlers of injured agility dogs, the types of treatments the dogs received, and the timeframe for return to training and competition. Procedures: Owners of agility dogs completed an internet-based survey. They were instructed to report injuries that had kept the dog from training or competing for over a week, identify which area(s) of the body had been injured and answer questions about the most severe injury to each body part. Additional questions included if handlers had sought veterinary care, who primarily determined treatment, type of treatment(s), and length of time before the dog could return to full training and competition. Results: This sample included data on 1,714 total injuries from 1,256 unique dogs. Handlers sought veterinary care for over 80% of injuries across all anatomical locations. Handlers were most likely to seek specialty veterinary care for reported injuries to the stifle (71%), iliopsoas (63%) and tibia (61%), and least likely for reported injuries to the carpus (34%), metatarsus (33%) and metacarpus (22%). Treatment of reported injuries to the antebrachium and stifle were most likely to be directed by a veterinarian (>70%), while reported injuries of the thigh (51%) and hip (53%) were least likely. Rest was the most common treatment for all injuries. Return to sport within 3 months was common (>67%) for most perceived injury locations, though dogs with reported stifle injuries took longer to return to competition and had a higher rate of retirement. Conclusion and clinical relevance: Owners of agility dogs have a high rate of seeking veterinary care for injuries. Overall return to sport rates were high, with the stifle being the notable exception. Future studies regarding specific treatment of injuries in agility dogs, and how injuries and their treatment affect return to agility after injury are required to provide optimal care protocols for these canine athletes.

Healing of segmental grafts of digital pad skin in dogs

Abstract:Pad grafts would be indicated in instances of severe paw trauma when there has been loss of the major weight-bearing pads (ie, metatarsal and metacarpal pads) as well as loss of the digital pads. A practical technique for replacing pad tissue on the remaining paw tissue could avert limb amputation for lack of weight-bearing tissue in the area. Small segmental digital pad grafts were placed in granulation tissue beds in dogs. Although the grafts were from thick pad skin, they healed well. However, intervening wound areas did not become covered with the heavier keratinized epithelium of the pads. The thinner, more rapidly growing, less keratinized epithelium from the wound edges covered most of the wound.
Surgical repair of Salter-Harris type II fracture of the distal humerus: short and long-term outcomes in a case series of three dogs and one cat

Abstract:Case histories: Three dogs and one cat sustained forelimb trauma and were presented to a university veterinary clinic (Liège, Belgium) and a private veterinary hospital (Beacouzé, France). All four animals were referred for surgery. Clinical findings: Two dogs and the cat were ambulatory on admission but unable to bear weight on the affected limb. One dog was non-ambulatory and lacked voluntary movement and sensation in one forelimb. Salter-Harris type II fractures of the distal humerus were diagnosed by radiography in all cases; avulsion of the brachial plexus and pelvic fractures were also present in the non-ambulatory dog. Treatment and outcome: All Salter-Harris type II fractures were stabilised by open reduction and internal fixation with cross pins. One minor complication (seroma) and three major complications (implant migration) developed after surgery. The pins were completely removed in one case and partially removed in two cases to resolve these complications. At the final follow-up examination (12-31 months after surgery), owners reported no lameness in three of the four cases and grade 2/5 left forelimb lameness in one case. Clinical relevance: This type of fracture is rarely described in the literature; however, it should be included in the differential diagnoses of traumatic humeral fractures in growing dogs and cats. In this case series, we achieved fair-to-excellent short-term and long-term outcomes after osteosynthesis of Salter-Harris type II fractures by cross pinning.

Abstract:Dog bites injuries are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Conventionally, it was suggested to leave the wounds open due to probable increased risk of infections and occurrence of rabies with suturing.Recent publications indicate that primary closure does not necessarily affect the chances of infection but definitely helps in improving the quality of scar. We are presenting our experience and protocol for primary closure of all dog bite wounds. From March 2020 to February 2021, 10 consecutive patients of all ages coming to the emergency of our hospital with category 3 dog bite that penetrated the epidermis and dermis and presenting within 48 hours of injury were included. Every patient was administered first dose of anti rabies vaccine (ARV) (zero dose) for active immunisation and was also given injection tetanus intramuscularly. Mean age of patients in our study was 20.9 with range from 2 years to 90 years. Only 2/10 patients developed infections which were managed conservatively with drainage of abscess and antibiotics. Rest all patients recovered without complications. Primary closure of dog bite wounds when associated with debridement, sufficient irrigation, povidine iodine cleansing and antibiotic administration resulted in improved cosmetic appearance without increase in the rate of infection.

Abstract:Medical records of dogs (n = 5) that had been treated for patellar fracture with transarticular external skeletal fixation (TA-ESF) to augment internal fixation, at a single referral hospital in the United Kingdom between 2015 and 2017, were reviewed.At presentation, two dogs had polar patellar fractures, two had comminuted fractures and one dog had a transverse fracture. The median age at the time of the surgery was 21 (min 8, max 132) months and the median body weight was 19.0 (min 8.3, max 28.6) kg. In all cases, TA-ESF (Type IA lateral triangulated or modified Type II) was used in combination with internal fixation with pins and/or orthopaedic wire, supported by nylon leader line (patella-to-tibia mattress suture) and/or absorbable suture in a locking loop and/or circum-patellar pattern. All cases had short-term (6–12 weeks) post-operative radiographic follow-up, which showed evidence of fracture healing in 2/5 cases. All TA-ESF were removed 6 or 7 weeks post-operatively and four dogs had minor complications related to TA-ESF. More than 2 years post-operatively, the owners of all dogs were contacted and questioned using the Liverpool Osteoarthritis in Dogs questionnaire regarding the mobility of their pet. Four of the five cases were re-examined to evaluate their long-term outcomes. Based on the results of goniometric measurement of stifle range of motion, subjective gait assessment and objective gait analysis with a pressure-sensitive walkway, all dogs showed a satisfactory outcome at the final follow-up.A combination of internal fixation and TA-ESF for stabilisation of traumatic patellar fractures is a valid treatment option. Further investigations with larger case numbers are necessary to evaluate success and complication rates.

Abstract:This clinical case study presents an overview of a patient that was involved in a road traffic accident and required right foreleg amputation including scapulectomy. The patient crashed and was recovered using cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Laser therapy was commenced from day 4 post-road traffic incident, and the healing process documented until full recovery was obtained. Since the surgery the patient is doing well and this case outlines some of the benefits of using the laser therapy in clinic as well as in the patient's home post-surgery.
Minimally invasive percutaneous elastic plate osteosynthesis as a treatment option for tibial diaphyseal fracture in skeletally immature dogs

Abstract:Background: Pediatric fractures are relatively common in dogs, and several treatment options exist, particularly for fractures in the distal extremities. Regardless of the choice of treatment, the overall goal is rapid restoration and excellent long-term functional recovery, with minimal discomfort and morbidity during healing. This case series aims to report the long-term outcome after minimally invasive percutaneous elastic plate osteosynthesis (MIPEPO) in the treatment of pediatric tibial fractures in dogs and compare this to other treatment options, where all techniques emphasize biological osteosynthesis. We especially accentuate surgery time, patient comfort level during osteosynthesis, time to clinical union, and complications, including long-term follow-up. Case description: Medical records of five skeletally immature (juvenile) dogs <6 months old with an isolated tibial diaphyseal fracture or a combination of tibial and fibular diaphyseal fractures, treated with MIPEPO aided by fluoroscopy. All dogs experienced excellent levels of comfort and limb functionality and exhibited preserved muscle mass throughout the healing process. The mean duration until plate removal was 27.6 days, with a standard deviation [(SD) ± 9.61; range of 15-36 days] following the operation. Subsequently, four dogs underwent a follow-up examination approximately 1.5 years after plate removal, during which bilateral orthogonal radiographs of the tibia were obtained. These radiographs revealed minimal discrepancies in terms of limb length, frontal plane alignment, and rotational alignment. Furthermore, the owners expressed complete satisfaction with their dogs' recovery and restoration of intended function. Conclusion: MIPEPO is quick to perform and well tolerated, with rapid fracture healing in juvenile dogs and excellent long-term outcomes. It can be considered along with external fixators and external coaptation when dealing with juvenile diaphyseal fractures.
Clinical and histological study of cold physical plasma jet in treatment of full thickness skin wounds of normal and diabetic dogs

Abstract:Objective: To study the effect of physical plasma jet in treating open wounds in diabetic and non-diabetic dogs. Methods: The experimental study was conducted at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Baghdad, Iraq, from 20 January, 2020 to 1st May 2020, according to (no. 1364/ P.G), and comprised adult male diabetic and nondiabetic dogs. They were divided into non-diabetic group N and diabetic group D. Each group was further divided into treatment subgroup T and control subgroup C. Each dog was subjected to 4 wounds 3×3cm in size. Homemade helium non-equilibrium atmospheric pressure plasma jet therapy was used for healing purposes. Clinical parameters were evaluated by observation, while histological images were scored based on the semi-quantitative evaluation of histological sections on days 3-, 7- and 21-days post-wound. Data was analysed using SPSS Version 26 with One-way ANOVA for statistical analysis between groups and sub-groups. Results: Of the 24 dogs, 12(50%) were in each of the two groups, which were further divided into subgroups having 6(50%) dogs each. The therapy accelerated the process of wound healing in the NT and DT subgroups compared to NC and DC. Clinical observations revealed early and complete closure of plasma-treated wounds in NT and DT subgroups started at day 30 post-wounding, while in the NC subgroup it started at day 35, and in the DC subgroup, wounds failed to close even after 35 days post-wounding. Histological analysis suggested that a plasma jet supported epithelisation, angiogenesis, formation of new hair follicles and collagen fibres, while it also controlled inflammation. In addition, in NT and DT subgroups, it increased the proliferation of fibroblasts and deposition of collagen, and there is a very, highly significant difference between groups (P<0.001), and a significant difference between days (P<0.05). Conclusions: Home-made helium non-equilibrium atmospheric pressure plasma jet therapy improved the quality and pace of wound healing.
Randomized controlled trials of abdominal acupuncture (1992–2012): An assessment of reporting quality with a CONSORT- and STRICTA-based instrument

Abstract:Objective: To assess the reporting quality of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of abdominal acupuncture submitted from 1992 to 2012. Methods: Collect all RCTs of abdominal acupuncture from 1992 to 2012 through computer-based retrieval and manual information retrieve. CBM, CNKI, VIP, Wan Fang Data, PubMed, EMbase, Cochrane Library and Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine library magazines database were used as the object source. Then, assess the reporting quality of the RCTs which met the inclusion criteria with a CONSORT- and STRICTA-based instrument. Results: The reporting quality of 107 RCTs, which met inclusion criteria, improved annually (P<;0.05). But the average score of more than half (n =16, 59.3%) questions less than 1. Our findings suggest that to enhance quality of reporting, authors should better attend to 16 specific OCSI items in 4 categories: practitioner training, aspects of randomization and blinding, additional analyses such as subgroup or adjusted analyses, and adverse events. The broad diversity in 107 RCTs, viewed in light of the considerable room for improvement in mean OCSI scores, emphasizes the importance of making STRICTA as well as CONSORT more widely known to abdominal acupuncture research community.
A Wound Treatment Strategy for "super Long-Term Difficult-to-Heal Wounds": A Single-Center Retrospective Study.

Abstract:Chronic wounds are a challenge for clinicians. Treating chronic wounds in elderly patients is difficult due to comorbidities and poor immunity, tissue renewal, and regeneration. This study shared the therapeutic experiences of 40 patients with super long-term difficult-to-heal wounds and to describe the effects of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT)-assisted debridement and autologous scalp grafting. Elderly patients with chronic wounds for more than 60 years who underwent NPWT-assisted debridement and autologous scalp grafting between 2015 and 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. Forty patients were identified and analyzed. Among all patients, the average wound area was 56 (interquartile range 30-90) cm2. The wound infection rate was 82.1%, and that before the first autologous scalp grafting was 51.3%. The average total number of surgeries was 3, and the number of times the NPWT device was replaced was once. A total of 97.4% of patients had one autologous scalp grafting performed. The transplanted scalp survived completely in 97.4% of patients. One hundred percent of patients had no postoperative complications and healed. The average wound healing time was 34.5 ± 10.1 days. This study showed that NPWT-assisted debridement and autologous scalp grafting have the advantages of high survival rate of the skin and decreased wound recurrence and may be a suitable treatment for super long-term difficult-to-heal wounds in elderly patients.

Abstract:Objectives: To survey the current treatment techniques of aural haematomas in dogs and investigate veterinary opinion regarding treatment success. Methods: Totally 2386 emails were sent to veterinary surgeons and practices inviting them to complete an online survey. Questions investigated treatment selection for initial and repeat presentations of aural haematoma in dogs and their opinion of treatment success to prevent recurrence and for good cosmesis. Results: Totally 312 email addresses were invalid, 259 questionnaires were completed (12·5% response rate) and 251 were included in analysis. On initial presentation, treatments included needle drainage with local deposition of corticosteroids (43%), surgery (29%) and needle drainage without corticosteroids (16%). Surgical procedures included linear incision with sutures alone (35%) or sutures plus stents (24%) and an S-shaped incision with sutures (23%). The most common reason to select a particular treatment was previous success (76%). Recurrent haematoma was treated more commonly with surgery (67%) than that of the initial presentation. Cosmetic results with medical management were excellent and with surgical treatment were good. Clinical significance: This study describes the relative popularity and perceived success of treatments used for aural haematoma in the dog. Surgery is considered more likely to definitively treat the condition with good cosmetic results.
Limb Gait Score of Femur Fracture Fixated by Intramedullary Pinning in Dogs

Abstract:Animal posture, limb gait, and body weight-bearing in dogs can be evaluated by limb gait score. In this study, nine adult male dogs of local breed were used to induce a complete transverse femoral mid-shaft fracture fixed internally by intramedullary pining under general anesthesia with the aseptic technique and followed for 60 days postoperative. The data were analyzed, including five degrees that indicate the correlation among animals' posture, limbs, and body weight tolerance per day. The results demonstrated that in grade 5, the animals completely hold the affected limb during standing position 1st-3rd day postoperative. From the 4th-10th day postoperative, in grade 4, the animals supported the body weight on the affected limb in the standing position and hold it during waking. In grade 3, from 11th-21th day postoperative, the operated animals supported body weight on the affected limb in slow waking and hold it in speed waking and running. From the 22nd-28th day postoperative, in grade 2, the animals used the limb in speed walking, from the 29th-35th day postoperative. In grade1, the animals could use the limb in running from the 36th-2nd day postoperative. In grade 0, the animals used the limb normally in walking, running, and jumping until the end of experimental periods (60th day postoperative). The results indicated that limb gait scores in dogs can be used for the evaluation of the relationships among animals' posture, limb gait, and body-weight bearing per day during bone regeneration processing of femur fracture fixed by intramedullary pining.

Abstract:Introduction: Fibrotic myopathy of the gracilis, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus is described primarily in working German Shepherd dogs. The purpose of this case series is to describe the rehabilitation modalities and treatments utilized in working dogs with fibrotic myopathy and the time frame they were able to continue working. Methods: Medical records of patients with hindlimb lameness that were presented to the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center in New York City from 2012 to 2023 were retrospectively searched. Signalment, history, clinical evaluation, gait analysis, goniometry of stifles, and follow-up evaluation were compared among patients. Ten male working dogs met inclusion criteria. Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ECSWT) was administered under sedation or general anesthesia. Rehabilitation therapy (RT), including massage, hamstring stretch, photobiomodulation, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, warm compress, therapeutic ultrasound, underwater treadmill, and therapeutic exercises, were performed once every one to 3 weeks with varying protocols according to patient assessments. Follow-up phone calls and emails were conducted to determine long-term outcome. Results: On average, dogs were able to work full-time for 32.1 months (range 6-82; SD 23.6) from the time of diagnosis. No activity limitation was reported by the owners/handlers. Discussion: This report is the first to describe non-invasive medical treatments that may extend the working ability of dogs diagnosed with fibrotic myopathy. Further prospective randomized controlled studies are needed to demonstrate the efficacy of ECSWT and RT for treating fibrotic myopathy. Conclusion: The results of this retrospective study suggest that the combination of ECSWT and RT may allow working dogs with fibrotic myopathy to continue their working capacity for an extended period of time.
Successful surgical management of a Salter-Harris type I fracture of the accessory carpal bone in a dog

Abstract:Objective: To describe the successful surgical management of a previously unreported Salter-Harris type I fracture of the accessory carpal bone in a dog. Animal: An 11-week-old intact female Golden Retriever-Poodle cross presented with a history of a marked left forelimb lameness following a suspected fall from a height. Clinical presentation, progression, and procedures: On physical examination, the patient demonstrated a severe left forelimb lameness and pain on palpation and range of motion of the left carpus. Orthogonal radiographs of the distal left forelimb demonstrated a type I Salter-Harris fracture of the accessory carpal bone with proximal displacement of the palmar fragment. Treatment and outcome: The patient underwent open reduction and internal fixation wherein the fracture was reduced and stabilized with two 1.1-mm Kirschner wires. Postoperatively, the patient was initially managed with a carpal flexion bandage for 2 weeks and then a soft padded bandage was maintained until 4 weeks postoperatively. The patient recovered well and was walking and weight-bearing comfortably following removal of the carpal flexion bandage. Repeat radiographs performed 4 and 8 weeks postoperatively demonstrated adequate fracture healing but showed mild proximocaudal implant displacement. Implant removal was not performed, as the patient was doing well at home and the implant migration appeared static and was not causing clinical morbidity. Clinical relevance: To the authors' knowledge, this was the only reported case of a Salter-Harris fracture of the accessory carpal bone in a dog and the only described case of successful surgical stabilization.

Abstract:Background and Aim: Natural topical products have been used to enhance wound healing, especially in immunocompromised animals. The aims of this study were to evaluate and to compare the effects of moist exposed burn ointment (MEBO) and honey on the healing of full-thickness skin wounds in immunocompromised dogs. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted using 12 adults, apparently healthy mongrel dogs. Immunosuppression was induced in six dogs by oral administration of prednisone (2 mg/kg) and azathioprine (2 mg/kg), once a day for 21 days. On each dog, a total of 9, 1.5 cm in diameter full-thickness skin circular wounds were created aseptically in the thoracolumbar area under general anesthesia using customized skin punch biopsy kit. In a random fashion, three wounds in each dog were treatment using MEBO (contains b-sitosterol, baicalin, and berberine as active ingredients in a base of beeswax and sesame oil), honey or no treatment (control), once per day for 21 days. Wounds were grossly evaluated once a day for signs of inflammation or infection. In addition, biopsy specimens and digital imaging data of each wound were obtained on days 7, 14, and 21 for histopathological evaluation of the healing process. Results: Wounds in immunocompromised dogs appeared to heal significantly in a slower fashion than in non-immunocompromised counterparts. Digital analysis data showed that MEBO-treated wounds expressed better epithelialization area, faster contraction, and smaller wound area percentage when compared with honey-treated wounds. Histopathological analysis showed significantly higher angiogenesis scores in MEBO-treated wounds when compared with other treatments. Conclusion: Results of this study showed that MEBO resulted in significant enhancement of wound healing in both healthy and immunocompromised dogs. However, when compared to honey, the wound healing effect of MEBO was superior to that of honey.
An unusual etiology of a scrotal dog bite injury and review of the literature

Abstract:Soft tissue injuries from animal bites are encountered occasionally in rural areas, resulting from attacks by, for example, dogs, wolves, horses, donkeys, and cats. The commonly affected body parts include the face, head and neck, nose, ears, hands, arms, and legs. The traumatic exposure of the external genital organs following an animal bite is a highly rare condition. Dog bite injuries in this area are a clinical condition that requires careful management due to the bacterial density of the oral flora of dogs, and also the potential bac-terial flora in the genital area, resulting in a high risk of infection. Tissue defects following dog bites to the genital area are at high risk of morbidity, and may even result in life-threatening conditions in the event of a major infection. The classical treatment approaches to soft tissue defects resulting from animal bites include wound irrigation, debridement, rabies and tetanus immunoprophylaxis, antibiotic therapy, and reconstruction after the elimination of the infection. Recently, however, the early acute approach seems to have replaced the conventional late period treatment, with studies recommending surgical repair in the early stage where possible. In this article, an unusual etiology of scrotal defect was determined under the light of detailed literature data. The present study reports on a case in which an early repair was made after wound cleaning and care, debridement, and then prophylactic antibiotic therapy, soon after the referring of the case to the hospital. No signs of local or systemic infection were noticed at the wound site during follow-up. Post-op-erative recovery was uneventful and the repair performed on the case had a satisfactory outcome. Based on our clinical experience, we believe that reconstruction accompanied by an early prophylactic antibiotherapy can produce satisfactory outcomes in genital defects caused by animal bites.
