Abstract:A circulator is one of the crucial devices in quantum networks and simulations. We propose a four-port circulator that regulate the flow of single photons at muti-frequency points by studying the coherent transmission of a single photon in a coupled system of two resonators and two waveguides. When both resonators are static or rotate at the same angular velocity, single-photon transport demonstrates reciprocity; however, when the angular velocities differ, four distinct frequency points emerge where photon circulation can occur. In particular, when the angular velocities of the two resonators are equal and opposite, there are two different frequency points where photon circulation can be achieved, and there is a frequency point where a single photon input from any waveguide can be completely routed to the other waveguide. Interestingly, by rotating the two resonators, the single-photon circulation suppressed by the internal defect-induced backscattering can be restored.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to realize a four-port quantum optical circulator for critical coupling of a spinning Kerr resonator to two tapered fibers. Its nonreciprocal effect arises from the Fizeau drag induced splitting of the resonance frequencies of the two counter-travelling optical modes. The transmitted photons exhibit direction dependent quantum correlations and nonreciprocal photon blockade occurs for photons transferred between the two fibers. Moreover, the quantum optical circulator is robust against the back scattering induced by intermodal coupling between counter-travelling optical modes. The present quantum optical circulator has significant potential as an elementary cell in chiral quantum information processing without magnetic field.

Abstract:As a key nonreciprocal device, the optical circulator builds optical links to several terminals in a circulating manner. The waveguide-type circulator with port count more than four has not been discussed, mainly due to the strict phase matching and adjustment. In this paper, a six-port optical circulator is proposed by introducing the nonreciprocal phase shifts (NPS) into a 3×3 multimode interference coupler. The structure with Ce:YIG material bonded to SOI waveguide is employed to illustrate the implementation and do the device simulation. There is no complex phase matching in the whole design. Good performance can be expected with the present fabrication techniques. This design scheme can also be easily generalized to the circulators with even more terminals.
Dual-carrier Floquet circulator with time-modulated optical resonators

Abstract:Spatio-temporal modulation has shown great promise as a strong time-reversal symmetry breaking mechanism that enables integrated nonreciprocal devices and topological materials at optical frequencies. However, optical modulation has its own constraints in terms of modulation index and frequency, which limit the bandwidth and miniaturization of circulators and isolators, not unlike the magneto-optical schemes that it promises to replace. Here we propose and numerically demonstrate a Floquet circulator that leverages the untapped degrees of freedom unique to time-modulated resonators. Excited by sideband-selective waveguides, the system supports broadband nonreciprocal transmission without relying on the mirror or rotational symmetries required in conventional circulators. Cascading two resonators, we create a linear three-port circulator that exhibits complete and frequency-independent forward transmission between two of the ports. This approach enables wavelength-scale circulators that can rely on a variety of modulation mechanisms.

Abstract:We demonstrate a fiber-integrated quantum optical circulator that is operated by a single atom and that relies on the chiral interaction between emitters and transversally confined light. Like its counterparts in classical optics, our circulator exhibits an inherent asymmetry between light propagation in the forward and the backward direction. However, rather than a magnetic field or a temporal modulation, it is the internal quantum state of the atom that controls the operation direction of the circulator. This working principle is compatible with preparing the circulator in a coherent superposition of its operational states. Such a quantum circulator may thus become a key element for routing and processing quantum information in scalable integrated optical circuits. Moreover, it features a strongly nonlinear response at the single-photon level, thereby enabling, e.g., photon number-dependent routing and novel quantum simulation protocols.

Abstract:The nonreciprocal propagation of light at the single-photon level is essential for building a quantum network. Bulk optical schemes are lossy and difficulty to integrate onto a chip. We propose a single-photon optical diode and a three-port circulator without a magnetic field by coupling an unbalanced quantum impurity to a passive, linear optical waveguide or a whispering-gallery-mode microresonator which supports a locally or globally circularly polarized photon. Thanks to the unbalanced quantum Jaynes-Cummings coupling, the optical nonreciprocal propagation of single photons can be achieved without an external magnetic field. In particular, the three-port single-photon circulator can be accomplished using the existing experimental technology. The optical isolation can be reversed by selectively populating the initial state of the quantum impurity. Moreover, by using an ensemble of identical atoms filled in a hollow-core microbottle resonator, nonreciprocal propagation of weak light pulses can be achieved.
Nonreciprocal Single-Photon Band Structure in a Coupled-Spinning-Resonator chain

Abstract:We analyze the single-photon band structure and the transport of a single photon in a one-dimensional coupled-spinning-resonator chain. The time-reversal symmetry of the resonators chain is broken by the spinning of the resonators, instead of external or synthetic magnetic field. Two nonreciprocal single-photon band gaps can be obtained in the coupled-spinning-resonator chain, whose width depends on the angular velocity of the spinning resonator. Based on the nonreciprocal band gaps, we can implement a single photon circulator at multiple frequency windows, and the direction of photon cycling is opposite for different band gaps. In addition, reciprocal single-photon band structures can also be realized in the coupled-spinning-resonator chain when all resonators rotate in the same direction with equal angular velocity. Our work open a new route to achieve, manipulate, and switch nonreciprocal or reciprocal single-photon band structures, and provides new opportunities to realize novel single-photon devices.

Abstract:The circulator is an important device in quantum information, which can route the input state to a designated output channel. In this work, we propose a scheme to realize a microwave photonic circulator based on optomechanical-like superconducting interactions. Our setup involves three high-frequency (HF) resonators and a low-frequency (LF) resonator. The HF resonators are coupled to the LF frequency resonator by the superconducting quantum interference device, and the HF resonators are coupled each other via linear interactions. Driving the HF resonators with three coherent fields results in synthetic magnetic fluxes, which, in combination with dissipative coupling to the LF resonator’s bath, leads to nonreciprocal transports of microwave photons. Different from circulators based on the optomechanical system, our scheme has stronger coupling and no thermal phonon noise. In the specific phase relationship, we calculate the nonreciprocal condition of the microwave photonic circulator and find that the transmission direction can be controlled by the phase differences between the driving fields. We obtain the parameters that affect the bandwidth. Moreover, we investigate the effects of imperfection. Our results provide a theoretical proposal for the realization of a high-isolation (68.4 dB) and low-dissipation microwave photonic circulator.

Abstract:We propose a new approach to realize all-optical circulator based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in an integrated microresonator. Stimulated Brillouin scattering is a basic interaction between photon and traveling acoustic wave resulted from electrostriction and photoelastic effects. Due to the phase-matching requirement, the circulating acoustic wave can only couple to probe light which propagating along or opposite to the pump laser direction, thus exhibits a non-reciprocal phase shift. Combined with Mach-Zehnder interferometer, the optical circulator can be realized. Though the bandwidth is relatively small because of the narrow-band nature of microresonator, this magnetic-free all-optical integrated circulator may be applied for future on-chip photonic information processing.

Abstract:The quantum router is an elementary building block in quantum information processing and quantum communication. This work constitutes a step forward in this direction, i.e., an efficient scheme is proposed for the implementation of a nonreciprocal single-photon quantum router, allowing the routing of a single photon from one side but blocking it from the other side. Our model consists of two directly coupled coplanar-waveguide resonators and a superconducting ring resonator, which are connected together through a transmission line. The nonreciprocity is realized by unidirectionally interacting the rotating microwave modes of the ring resonator with a dissipative magnon mode in an yttrium iron garnet disk. We find that a single-photon signal can be delivered from a given input port to either of the two output ports, but is fully absorbed from the opposite one. The proposed scheme not only enriches the family of nonreciprocal quantum devices, but also finds useful applications in chiral quantum technologies.

Abstract:Quantum router is an essential element in the quantum network. Here, we present a fully quantum router based on interaction free measurement and quantum dots. The signal photonic qubit can be routed to different output ports according to one control electronic qubit. Besides, our scheme is an interferometric method capable of routing single photons carrying either spin angular momentum (SAM) or orbital angular momentum (OAM), or simultaneously carrying SAM and OAM. Then we describe a cascaded multi-level quantum router to construct a one-to-many quantum router. Subsequently we analyze the success probability by using a tunable controlled phase gate. The implementation issues are also discussed to show that this scheme is feasible.
Single-photon Nonreciprocal Transport in One-Dimensional Coupled-Resonator Waveguides

Abstract:We study the transport of a single photon in two coupled one-dimensional semi-infinite coupled-resonator waveguides (CRWs), in which both end sides are coupled to a dissipative cavity. We demonstrate that a single photon can transfer from one semi-infinite CRW to the other nonreciprocally. Based on such nonreciprocity, we further construct a three-port single-photon circulator by a T-shaped waveguide, in which three semi-infinite CRWs are pairwise mutually coupled to each other. The single-photon nonreciprocal transport is induced by the breaking of the time-reversal symmetry and the optimal conditions for these phenomena are obtained analytically. The CRWs with broken time-reversal symmetry will open up a kind of quantum device with versatile applications in quantum networks.
Nonreciprocal Single-Photon Frequency Converter Via Multiple Semi-Infinite Coupled-Resonator Waveguides

Abstract:We propose to construct a nonreciprocal single-photon frequency converter via multiple semi-infinite coupled-resonator waveguides (CRWs). We first demonstrate that the frequency of a single photon can be converted nonreciprocally through two CRWs, which are coupled indirectly by optomechanical interactions with two nondegenerate mechanical modes. Based on this nonreciprocity, two different single-photon circulators are proposed in the T-shaped waveguides consisting of three semi-infinite CRWs, which are coupled pairwise by optomechanical interactions. One circulator is proposed by using two nondegenerate mechanical modes and the other one is proposed by using three nondegenerate mechanical modes. Nonreciprocal single-photon frequency conversion is induced by breaking the time-reversal symmetry, and the optimal conditions for nonreciprocal frequency conversion are obtained. These proposals can be used to realize nonreciprocal frequency conversion of single photons in any two distinctive waveguides with different frequencies and they can allow for dynamic control of the direction of frequency conversion by tuning the phases of external driving lasers, which may have versatile applications in hybrid quantum networks.

Abstract:The future Internet is very likely the mixture of all-optical Internet with low power consumption and quantum Internet with absolute security guaranteed by the laws of quantum mechanics. Photons would be used for processing, routing and com-munication of data, and photonic transistor using a weak light to control a strong light is the core component as an optical analogue to the electronic transistor that forms the basis of modern electronics. In sharp contrast to previous all-optical tran-sistors which are all based on optical nonlinearities, here I introduce a novel design for a high-gain and high-speed (up to terahertz) photonic transistor and its counterpart in the quantum limit, i.e., single-photon transistor based on a linear optical effect: giant Faraday rotation induced by a single electronic spin in a single-sided optical microcavity. A single-photon or classical optical pulse as the gate sets the spin state via projective measurement and controls the polarization of a strong light to open/block the photonic channel. Due to the duality as quantum gate for quantum information processing and transistor for optical information processing, this versatile spin-cavity quantum transistor provides a solid-state platform ideal for all-optical networks and quantum networks.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to realize a single-photon diode and circulator using two waveguides chirally coupled to a five-level M-type atom. Two external control fields are introduced to drive the emitter. Non-reciprocal single-photon propagation can be completed in our scheme, which underpins the single-photon diode and circulator. The single-photon diode can work well at special frequency points of the incident photon simultaneously. We can modulate the Rabi frequencies and detunings of the control fields to satisfy various values of frequency points of the incident photon. In addition, the non-reciprocity of the photon propagation can be turned off or on when the control fields are turned off or on. A single-frequency filter can filter out a special frequency for the incident photon by adjusting the detunings of the control fields. The single-photon circulator can realize photon propagation in the pathways 1 -> 2,2 -> 3,3 -> 4,4 -> 1<i with probability 100%. The properties of the circulator can be modulated by adjusting the Rabi frequencies and detunings of the control fields.
Control of a single-photon router via an extra cavity

Abstract:Controllable single-photon routing plays an important role in quantum networks. We investigate single-photon scattering in two one-dimensional (1D) waveguides by a three-level emitter with a cascade configuration, which is a dipole coupled to an extra cavity. The tunneling path for the transmission of a single photon is switched by whether the extra cavity contains photons. For the setup, the Autler-Townes splitting is modulated by the extra cavity, in which the transmission valley (reflection range) width is tunable in terms of the number of photons in the extra cavity. Our investigation will be beneficial to single-photon routing in quantum networks using quantifiable photon numbers in an extra cavity.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme of a single photon router based on a coupled Bose-Einstein condensate cavity system. The numerical results obtained show that by controlling the route of the probe photon using an appropriate pump beam, this coupled system can serve as a single photon router. Importantly, this router works well in the optical regime, instead of the microwave regime, and at an ultralow pump power. The scheme, proposed here, may have potential applications in optical signal processing, communication, and quantum information networks.

Abstract:Nonreciprocal optical devices, such as isolators and circulators, provide highly desirable functionalities in routing signals. This motivates the active research on high-efficiency nonreciprocal devices, especially for miniaturized and integrable magnetic-free schemes. All the present experimental demonstrations of circulators in optical domains are based on the high-Q factor cavity. In this work, we demonstrate a cavity-free optical circulator with low insertion loss by making use of a far-detuned nonlinear Raman process with the assistance of the atomic Doppler effect. Due to the large detuning, the excited state can be adiabatically eliminated, resulting in nearly vanishing absorption. An optical circulator with average transmission of more than 85% and fidelity above 0.98 is well achieved in an experiment with hot atoms. Our scheme shows the possibility of cavity-free nonreciprocal optical devices with low insertion loss.

Abstract:Cavity-free optical nonreciprocity components, which have an inherent strong asymmetric interaction between the forward- and backward-propagation direction of the probe field, are key to produce such as optical isolators and circulators. According to the proposal presented by Xia et al., [Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 203602 (2018)], we experimentally build a device that uses cross-Kerr nonlinearity to achieve a cavity-free optical isolator and circulator. Its nonreciprocal behavior arises from the thermal motion of N-type configuration atoms, which induces a strong chiral cross-Kerr nonlinear response for the weak probe beam. We obtain a two-port optical isolator for up to 20 dB of isolation ratio in a specially designed Sagnac interferometer. The distinct propagation directions of the weak probe field determine its cross-phase shift and transmission, by which we demonstrate the accessibility of a four-port optical circulator.
Directional router and controllable non-reciprocity transmission based on phase and pathway coherence

Abstract:A multi-channel quantum router with four nodal cavities is constructed by two coupled-resonator waveguides and four single cavities. We can achieve directional routing by adjusting the probability of photon exiting from the specified port to close to 100% based on multiple pathways between the photon from the incident port to the outgoing port in this hybrid system. Under the effect of phase difference between two classical light fields, the mutual interference between different pathways can be adjusted to destructive interference or constructive interference, which lays the foundation for the increase and decrease of the routing probability. The influence of different parameter values on single photon routing probability is also studied. By studying the analytic formula of probability amplitude, we get the physical mechanism of exiting ports being closed under certain parameter conditions and the phase relationship between the backward transmission and the original direction transmission of photons. Furthermore the non-reciprocal transmission and directional routing beyond chiral coupling can also be realized, which provides new possibilities for the study of quantum routers and new insights for the study of photon transmission characteristics.
