Abstract:Ovarian cancer is a common malignancy of the female reproductive system, with approximately 230,000 new cases and 150,000 deaths annually worldwide. Incidence rates vary across regions and populations, being higher in North America and Northern Europe (9–11 per 100,000 women) and lower in Asia and Africa (5–7 per 100,000 women). [ 1 ] Eighty percent of cases occur in women over 50 years old. Women carrying BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations have a 40% to 60% and 15% to 25% risk of developing the disease, respectively, significantly higher than the 1% to 2% risk in the general population. Risk factors also include nulliparity or first childbirth after age 35, obesity, long-term hormone replacement therapy, and smoking. [ 2 , 3 ]
