Abstract:Collective behaviour, social interactions and leadership in animal groups are often driven by individual differences. However, most studies focus on same-species groups, in which individual variation is relatively low. Multispecies groups, however, entail interactions among highly divergent phenotypes, ranging from simple exploitative actions to complex coordinated networks. Here we studied hunting groups of otherwise-solitary Octopus cyanea and multiple fish species, to unravel hidden mechanisms of leadership and associated dynamics in functional nature and complexity, when divergence is maximized. Using three-dimensional field-based tracking and field experiments, we found that these groups exhibit complex functional dynamics and composition-dependent properties. Social influence is hierarchically distributed over multiscale dimensions representing role specializations: fish (particularly goatfish) drive environmental exploration, deciding where, while the octopus decides if, and when, the group moves. Thus, 'classical leadership' can be insufficient to describe complex heterogeneous systems, in which leadership instead can be driven by both stimulating and inhibiting movement. Furthermore, group composition altered individual investment and collective action, triggering partner control mechanisms (that is, punching) and benefits for the de facto leader, the octopus. This seemingly non-social invertebrate flexibly adapts to heterospecific actions, showing hallmarks of social competence and cognition. These findings expand our current understanding of what leadership is and what sociality is.

Abstract:We present evidence of a novel form of group hunting. Individual sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) alternate attacks with other group members on their schooling prey (Sardinella aurita). While only 24% of attacks result in prey capture, multiple prey are injured in 95% of attacks, resulting in an increase of injured fish in the school with the number of attacks. How quickly prey are captured is positively correlated with the level of injury of the school, suggesting that hunters can benefit from other conspecifics' attacks on the prey. To explore this, we built a mathematical model capturing the dynamics of the hunt. We show that group hunting provides major efficiency gains (prey caught per unit time) for individuals in groups of up to 70 members. We also demonstrate that a free riding strategy, where some individuals wait until the prey are sufficiently injured before attacking, is only beneficial if the cost of attacking is high, and only then when waiting times are short. Our findings provide evidence that cooperative benefits can be realised through the facilitative effects of individuals' hunting actions without spatial coordination of attacks. Such "proto-cooperation" may be the pre-cursor to more complex group-hunting strategies.

Leading the charge: A qualitative case-study of leadership conditions in collaborative environmental governance structures

Abstract:Collaborative governance structures are increasingly common among natural resource managers. While studies have assessed the conditions under which collaborative action occurs, little emphasis has been placed on the role leadership may play in joint-jurisdictional systems. Management of species under the Endangered Species Act offers an opportunity to assess the collaboration of federal, state, and tribal resource agencies. The Gulf of Maine Distinct Population Segment of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) was managed under a structure called the Atlantic Salmon Recovery Framework (ASRF) from 2011 to 2019. Using the ASRF as a case study, we examined the influence of leadership approaches on perceived program efficacy, member buy-in, and experience through semi-structured interviews. Participant reflections revealed three major leadership themes that participants found inadequate: (1) shared goals, (2) transparency, and (3) trust. Collaborative approaches that foster these leadership conditions may increase adaptive capacity and the likelihood of sustained success in this, and other, environmental governance structures.
Motion leadership and local interaction in two species of freshwater fish (Danio rerio and Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi)

Abstract:The authors studied momentary motion leadership in small groups of black neon tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi) and zebrafish (Danio rerio), its relationship with local interaction parameters, such as the acceleration and turning angle of the individuals, and the relative locations of the individuals within the group. The purpose was to know whether leadership tended to be monopolised by certain individuals or whether it was equitably shared between them and if there were differences in leadership sharing between these two species, which are known to have different degrees of cohesion and polarisation. The authors filmed groups of two, three, four and eight fishes of each species and tracked their individual motion by image analysis and trajectory extraction. In both species, motion leadership was not monopolized but egalitarian and very short lived, with leadership shifts distributed randomly over time. The duration of leadership episodes decreased as group size increased and was longer in black neon tetra than in zebrafish. Momentary leaders did not tend to be in the front positions, but closer to the centre of the group. Acceleration and turning angle were more extreme in zebrafish than in black neon tetra and in the momentary leaders than the followers in both species. In general, these differences between species and between leaders/followers were qualitatively similar with some differences in detail, indicating that the relationship between motion leadership and local interaction parameters is likely to conform to a general physical law.
Emergence of Leadership in a Robotic Fish Group under Diverging Individual Personality Traits

Abstract:Variations of individual’s personality traits have been identified before as one of the possible mechanisms for the emergence of leadership in an interactive collective, which may lead to benefits for the group as a whole. Complementing the large number of existing literatures on using simulation models to study leadership, we use biomimetic robotic fish to gain insight into how the fish’s behaviours evolve under the influence of the physical hydrodynamics. In particular, we focus in this paper on understanding how robotic fish’s personality traits affect the emergence of an effective leading fish in repeated robotic foraging tasks when the robotic fish’s strategies, to push or not to push the obstacle in its foraging path, are updated over time following an evolutionary game set-up. We further show that the robotic fish’s personality traits diverge when the group carries out difficult foraging tasks in our experiments, and self-organization takes place to help the group to adapt to the level of difficulties of the tasks without inter-individual communication.
Better and faster collective decisions by larger fish shoals in the wild

Abstract:Studies on collective cognition have provided many examples of decision-making benefits in terms of animals sharing information about predators, prey or resources in their environment. It has been shown how the efficient spread of adaptive information within groups can pro-vide benefits which increase with group size. Little is known, however, to which extent groups also amplify maladaptive information such as false alarms and whether such costs reduce or even nullify the above benefits. Here, we investigated fish shoals in the wild that responded collectively with escape dives when attacked by birds. We analysed the response of shoals in reaction to hard-to-detect bird attacks and similar but harmless flybys as a func-tion of shoal size. With increasing shoal size fish increasingly detected predator attacks (true positives) while their false alarms remained constant. Therefore, larger shoals became better at correctly classifying potentially dangerous stimuli rather than becoming more sensitive to all stimuli potentially related to attacks. In addition, decision time decreased with increasing shoal size. Larger shoals were thus able to mitigate two major trade-offs inherent in solitary decision making: the trade-off between true and false positives and the trade-off between speed and accuracy. We report performance increases at shoal sizes of tens of thousands of fish and pose challenges for the modelling of the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract:Much received wisdom in the conservation literature is that individual connections across community boundaries undercut natural resource management. However, when multiple communities access the same resource, these long‐distance relationships could generate interdependence and trust to motivate engagement in collective action to manage the resource. To test this, we interviewed 1317 people in 28 fishing villages in Tanzania about their participation in managing open‐access fisheries and their social relationships in each village accessing the fishery. People with more friends in other villages trusted more people in those villages and were more likely to participate in collective action to manage the shared fishery, such as reporting others for destructive fishing practices. These results show that long‐distance relationships may be a useful foundation upon which to build conservation efforts that cross community boundaries and bolster sustainable resource use.

Identifying differences in the rules of interaction between individuals in moving animal groups

Abstract:Collective movement can be achieved when individuals respond to the local movements and positions of their neighbours. Some individuals may disproportionately influence group movement if they occupy particular spatial positions in the group, for example, positions at the front of the group. We asked, therefore, what led individuals in moving pairs of fish (Gambusia holbrooki) to occupy a position in front of their partner. Individuals adjusted their speed and direction differently in response to their partner's position, resulting in individuals occupying different positions in the group. Individuals that were found most often at the front of the pair had greater mean changes in speed than their partner, and were less likely to turn towards their partner, compared to those individuals most often found at the back of the pair. The pair moved faster when led by the individual that was usually at the front. Our results highlight how differences in the social responsiveness between individuals can give rise to leadership in free moving groups. They also demonstrate how the movement characteristics of groups depend on the spatial configuration of individuals within them.

The impact of different degrees of leadership on collective navigation in follower-leader systems

Abstract:In both animal and cell populations, the presence of leaders often underlies the success of collective migration processes, which we characterise by a group maintaining a cohesive configuration that consistently moves toward a target. We extend a recent non-local hyperbolic model for follower-leader systems to investigate different degrees of leadership. Specifically, we consider three levels of leadership: indifferent leaders, who do not alter their movement according to followers; observant leaders, who attempt to remain connected with the followers, but do not allow followers to affect their desired alignment; and persuadable leaders, who integrate their attempt to reach some target with the alignment of all neighbours, both followers and leaders. A combination of analysis and numerical simulations is used to investigate under which conditions each degree of leadership allows successful collective movement to a destination. We find that the indifferent leaders' strategy can result in a cohesive and target-directed migration only for short times. Observant and persuadable leaders instead provide robust guidance, showing that the optimal leader behavior depends on the connection between the migrating individuals: if alignment is low, greater follower influence on leaders is beneficial for successful guidance; otherwise, it can be detrimental and may generate various unsuccessful swarming dynamics.

The emergence of unshared consensus decisions in bottlenose dolphins

Abstract:Unshared consensus decision-making processes, in which one or a small number of individuals make the decision for the rest of a group, are rarely documented. However, this mechanism can be beneficial for all group members when one individual has greater knowledge about the benefits of the decision than other group members. Such decisions are reached during certain activity shifts within the population of bottlenose dolphins residing in Doubtful Sound, New Zealand. Behavioral signals are performed by one individual and seem to precipitate shifts in the behavior of the entire group: males perform side flops and initiate traveling bouts while females perform upside-down lobtails and terminate traveling bouts. However, these signals are not observed at all activity shifts. We find that, while side flops were performed by males that have greater knowledge than other male group members, this was not the case for females performing upside-down lobtails. The reason for this could have been that a generally high knowledge about the optimal timing of travel terminations rendered it less important which individual female made the decision.

Abstract:Among the various species that form mixed-species bird flocks, "nuclear species" are thought to be important in flock formation and maintaining flock cohesion. Such nuclear species have been noted to occur in large groups on their own and to lead flocks, but the relationship between leadership and intraspecific group size has not been quantitatively tested at a large scale. Using a dataset of descriptive studies of terrestrial flock systems collected over 75 y, we found that intraspecific group size was significantly larger in flock leaders than in species that attend the same flocks but do not lead. The relationship held in a reduced dataset with phylogenetically-independent flock systems. We discuss a framework for explaining the connection between leadership and intraspecific group size, contrasting between those hypotheses that emphasize that gregariousness serves to attract the attention of other species, and those hypotheses that suggest that gregariousness leads to kin-selected behavior from which other species can also benefit.

Abstract:Social animals have to make a multitude of group decisions on a daily basis. At the most basic level, this will involve coordination of activities and travel directions. In groups of insects, birds and fish, much of this 'coordination' can be the result of relatively simple interaction patterns among group members. Such systems are self-organizing, and often do not require specific leaders, or followers. However, in more socially complex groups, achieving collective group action-a consensus-may not be accomplished by simple rules alone. Instead, a consensus may be reached by the averaging of preferences (democracy), or by following the choices of specific leaders (despotism). In this mini-review, we discuss the conditions necessary for despotism in animal groups, and focus upon new studies investigating coordinated actions in primates. We ask how specific leaders arise and why others follow them-providing new insight into the mechanisms of effective leadership in groups characterized by strong social relationships.

Collective intelligence facilitates emergent resource partitioning through frequency dependent learning

Abstract:Deciding where to forage must not only account for variation in habitat quality, but also where others might forage. Recent studies have suggested that when individuals remember recent foraging outcomes, negative frequency-dependent learning can allow them to avoid resources exploited by others (indirect competition). This process can drive the emergence of consistent differences in resource use (resource partitioning) at the population level. However, indirect cues of competition can be difficult for individuals to sense. Here, we propose that information pooling through collective decision-making—i.e. collective intelligence—can allow populations of group-living animals to more effectively partition resources relative to populations of solitary animals. We test this hypothesis by simulating (i) individuals preferring to forage where they were recently successful, and (ii) cohesive groups that choose one resource using a majority rule. While solitary animals can partially avoid indirect competition through negative frequency-dependent learning, resource partitioning is more likely to emerge in populations of group-living animals. Populations of larger groups also better partition resources than populations of smaller groups, especially in environments with more choices. Our results give insight into the value of long- vs. short-term memory, home range sizes, and the evolution of specialisation, optimal group sizes, and territoriality.

Abstract:Collective animal movement fascinates children and scientists alike. One of the most commonly given explanations for collective animal movement is improved foraging. Animals are hypothesized to gain from searching for food in groups. Here, we use a computer simulation to analyze how moving in a group assists searching for food. We use a well-established collective movement model that only assumes local interactions between individuals without any leadership, in order to examine the benefits of group searching. We focus on how the sensory abilities of the simulated individuals, and specifically their ability to detect food and to follow neighbours, influence searching dynamics and searching performance. We show that local interactions between neighbors are sufficient for the formation of groups, which search more efficiently than independently moving individuals. Once a member of a group finds food, this information diffuses through the group and results in a convergence of up to 85\% of group members on the food. Interestingly, this convergence behavior can emerge from the local interactions between group members without a need to explicitly define it. In order to understand the principles underlying the group's performance, we perturb many of the model's basic parameters, including its social, environmental and sensory parameters. We test a wide range of biological-plausible sensory regimes, relevant to different species and different sensory modalities and examine how they effect group-foraging performance. This thorough analysis of model parameters allows for the generalization of our results to a wide range of organisms, which rely on different sensory modalities, explaining why they move and forage in groups.
Identifying partners at sea on contrasting fisheries around the world

Abstract:Here we present an approach to identify partners at sea based on fishing track analysis, and describe this behaviour in six different fleets: 1) pelagic pair trawlers, 2) large bottom otter trawlers, 3) small bottom otter trawlers, 4) mid-water otter trawlers, all operating in the North-East Atlantic Ocean, 5) anchovy purse-seiners in the South-East Pacific Ocean, and 6) tuna purse-seiners in the Western Indian Ocean. This type of behaviour is known to exist within pelagic pair trawlers. Since these vessels need to be in pairs for their fishing operations, in practice some of them decide to move together throughout their whole fishing trips, and others for only a segment of their trips. To identify partners at sea, we used a heuristic approach based on joint-movement metrics and Gaussian mixture models. The models were first fitted on the pelagic pair trawlers and then used on the other fleets. From all of these fisheries, only the tuna purse-seiners did not present partners at sea. We then analysed the connections at the scale of vessels and identified exclusive partners. This work shows that there are collective tactics at least at a pairwise level in diverse fisheries in the world.

The diffusion of cooperative and solo bubble net feeding in Canadian Pacific humpback whales

Abstract:Cooperative foraging, a mutualistic resource acquisition behaviour observed across diverse taxa, can drive social network structure, as it typically involves high rates of interactions between individuals. Understanding the mechanisms and distribution of such behaviours is important to elucidate the drivers of social organisation. Bubble net feeding ('bubble netting') is a specialised foraging technique practised by certain humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) populations globally. Over 20 years of study in the northern Canadian Pacific, we observed the diffusion of two morphs of this behaviour: social cooperative and independent, or 'solo', bubble netting. Network-based diffusion analyses - a tool developed to test for social learning - find strong evidence for the social learning of bubble netting when a static social network is used, even after accounting for individual-level traits such as site fidelity and sex (10.6 x10^3 to 35.4x10^3 times more support for social versus asocial learning; p < 0.0001). However, we could not completely exclude homophily due to the inherent sociality of this cooperative foraging behaviour. Nonetheless, it is clear that the rapid diffusion of bubble netting throughout this population has significant consequences for its social structure, which should be information considered by those planning the conservation of this threatened population.

Inferring Leader-Follower Behavior from Presence Data in the Marine Environment: A Case Study on Reef Manta Rays

Abstract:Social interactions are fundamental in animal groups, including humans, and can take various forms, such as competition, cooperation, or kinship. Understanding these interactions in marine environments has been historically challenging due to data collection difficulties. However, advancements in acoustic telemetry now enable remote analysis of such behaviors. This study proposes a method to derive leader-follower networks from presence data collected by a single acoustic receiver at a specific location. Using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov distance, the method analyzes lag times between consecutive presences of individuals to infer directed relationships. Tested on simulated data, it was then applied to detection data from acoustically tagged reef manta rays (\textit{Mobula~alfredi}) frequenting a known site. Results revealed temporal patterns, including circadian rhythms and burst-like behavior with power-law distributed time gaps between presences. The inferred leader-follower network highlighted key behavioral patterns: females followed males more often than expected, males showed stronger but fewer associations with specific females, and smaller individuals followed others less consistently than larger ones. These findings align with ecological insights, revealing structured social interactions and providing a novel framework for studying marine animal behavior through network theory.

Selective social interactions and speed-induced leadership in schooling fish

Abstract:Animals moving together in groups are believed to interact among each other with effective social forces, such as attraction, repulsion and alignment. Such forces can be inferred using 'force maps', i.e. by analysing the dependency of the acceleration of a focal individual on relevant variables. Here we introduce a force map technique suitable for the analysis of the alignment forces experienced by individuals. After validating it using an agent-based model, we apply the force map to experimental data of schooling fish. We observe signatures of an effective alignment force with faster neighbours, and an unexpected anti-alignment with slower neighbours. Instead of an explicit anti-alignment behaviour, we suggest that the observed pattern is the result of a selective attention mechanism, where fish pay less attention to slower neighbours. This mechanism implies the existence of temporal leadership interactions based on relative speeds between neighbours. We present support for this hypothesis both from agent-based modelling, as well as from exploring leader-follower relationships in the experimental data.

Leadership amongst pigs when faced with a novel situation

Abstract:Leadership is a risky behaviour that can impact individuals and groups. Leaders, i.e. individuals who perform or initiate a task while other individuals in the group follow, have been studied in different contexts, but there is still a lack of understanding on the role of individual characteristics that may predispose them to become leaders, such as dominance and personality. In particular, the characteristics of leaders in domestic animal populations has been poorly examined. We studied leadership within 32 groups of young pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus, n = 366 individuals). Leadership was assessed during a group-based fear test (Human Approach Test) which was repeated three times. The first individual per group to touch the person was identified as leader. We assessed repeatability of leadership and characteristics of leaders as compared to followers. Leadership was marginally repeatable, with 6 out of 26 groups having a consistent single leader across all tests. Females had odds 4.13 times greater than males of being a leader, while there was no effect of body weight (a proxy of dominance) or coping style on leadership. The results indicate a similarity with wild populations, in which females lead the herd even though the males, which are superior in body weight, are often dominant.

Abstract:It is imperative for individuals to exhibit flexible behaviour according to ecological context, such as available resources or predation threat. Manipulative studies on responses to threat often focus on behaviour in the presence of a single indicator for the potential of predation, whereas in the wild perception of threat will probably be more nuanced. Here, we examine the collective behaviour of eastern mosquitofish ( Gambusia holbrooki ) subject to five differing threat scenarios relating to the presence and hunger state of a jade perch ( Scortum barcoo ). Across threat scenarios, groups exhibit unique behavioural profiles that differ in the durations that particular collective states are maintained, the probability of transitions between states, the size and duration of persistence of spatially defined subgroups, and the patterns of collective order of these subgroups. Under the greatest level of threat, subgroups of consistent membership persist for longer durations. Group-level behaviours, and their differences, are interconnected with differences in estimates of the underlying rules of interaction thought to govern collective motion. The responses of the group are shown to be specific to the details of a potential threat, rather than a binary response to the presence or absence of some form of threat.
