Abstract:Multiple scattering is an inevitable effect in spaceborne oceanic lidar because of the large footprint size and the high optical density of seawater. The effective attenuation coefficient k(lidar) in oceanic lidar equation, which indicates the influence of the multiple scattering effect on the formation of lidar returns, is an important parameter in the retrieval of inherent optical properties (IOPs) of seawater. In this paper, the nonlinearity of k(lidar) and the relationships between k(lidar) and the IOPs of seawater are investigated by solving the radiative transfer equation with an improved semianalytic Monte Carlo model. k(lidar) is found to decrease exponentially with the increase of depth in homogeneous waters. k(lidar) is given as an exponential function of depth and IOPs of seawater. The results in this paper can help to have a better understanding of the multiple scattering effect of spaceborne lidar and improve the retrieval accuracy of the IOPs of seawater using spaceborne lidar.

Abstract:We present a theoretical model of optical beam propagation in a nonlinear medium for determining the nonlinear refraction and nonlinear absorption accurately and simultaneously by a single Z-scan method. The model is based on the Gaussian decomposition method and symmetric analysis. In principle, accurate nonlinear refraction and nonlinear absorption can be obtained simultaneously by exact experimental data, no matter how much they are. The treatment procedure of Z-scan experimental data is demonstrated. (C) 2004 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:A simple division of close-aperture Z-scan curve by open-aperture Z-scan is conveniently used to obtain the nonlinear refractive index. It usually causes an error, which even reaches up to over 50% for Z-scan measurements with a pinhole or a medium with a high nonlinear absorption. Here the influence of nonlinear absorption on the determination of nonlinear refraction by Z-scan is analysed. We suggest that the error can be reduced greatly by a simple analysis of the symmetric features (symmetric method) of Z-scan curves from the closed-aperture Z-scan curve. As an example, experiments were carried out on CS2 solution of C60 derivative, symmetric method agrees well with exact simulation.

Abstract:We extend the recently developed dual-arm Z-scan to increase the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for measuring the nonlinear refraction (NLR) of thin films on thick substrates. Similar to the case of solutes in solution, the phase shift due to NLR in a thin film can often be dominated by the phase shift due to NLR in the much thicker substrate. SNR enhancement is accomplished by simultaneously scanning a bare substrate and the film plus substrate in two separate but identical Z-scan arms. The subtraction of these signals taken simultaneously effectively cancels the nonlinear signal from the substrate, leaving only the signal from the film. More importantly, the SNR is increased since the correlated noise from effects such as beam-pointing instabilities cancels. To show the versatility of the dual-arm Z-scan method, we perform measurements on semiconductor and organic thin films, some less than 100 nm thick and with thicknesses up to 4 orders of magnitude less than the substrate.

Abstract:A method is reported to simultaneously measure the nonlinear absorption and refraction coefficients of materials using a nonlinear-imaging technique with a phase object. In this technique, the sign and magnitude of both the nonlinear absorption and refraction can be acquired conveniently from the analysis of three experiment images: the linear image, the nonlinear image and the image without sample. In order to validate our approach, we demonstrate this method for ZnSe at 532 nm where two-photon absorption is present and the nonlinear refractive index n 2 is negative. The values of β (nonlinear absorption coefficient) and n 2 we measured are very close to the values found in other literature.

Abstract:Both nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refraction are effects that are potentially useful for a plethora of applications in photonics, nanophotonics and biophotonics. Despite substantial attention given to these phenomena by researchers studying the merits of disparate systems such as organic materials, hybrid materials, metal-containing molecules and nanostructures, it is virtually impossible to compare the results obtained on different materials when varying parameters of the light beams and different techniques are employed. We have attempted to address the problem by studying the properties of various systems in a systematic way, within a wide range of wavelengths, and including the regions of one-photon, two-photon and three-photon absorption.The objects of our studies have been typical nonlinear chromophores, such as pi-conjugated molecules, oligomers and polymers, organometallics and coordination complexes containing transition metals, organometallic dendrimers, small metal-containing clusters, and nanoparticles of various kinds, including semiconductor quantum dots, plasmonic particles and rare-earth doped nanocrystals. We discuss herein procedures to quantify the nonlinear response of all of these systems, by defining and comparing the merit factors relevant for various applications.

Abstract:The contribution of multiphoton absorption to open-aperture Z-scan measurements is analysed by coordinate transformation. The approximate closed-form solution is obtained, which is suitable for application in higher-optical power regime. As an example, the coupling between linear absorption and two-photon absorption is discussed in detail.

Abstract:We report the theoretical investigation of the Z-scan technique for characterizing the instantaneous Kerr non-linearity of an optically thin multiphoton absorber. Based on the Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral method, we study the characteristics of the closed-aperture Z-scan traces. Most importantly, we present the analytical formulae of the closed-aperture Z-scan transmittance with simultaneous Kerr effect and n-photon absorption. Besides, we demonstrate that the determination of the third-order nonlinear refractive index in multiphoton absorbers becomes timesaving yet unambiguously by the presented theory. Abstract:We demonstrate theoretically and numerically how to identify and separate the high-order absorptive and refractive nonlinearities. We give, for multiphoton absorption, the formulas of the nonlinear imaginary phase shift, and thus the normalized transmittance of open aperture Z-scan. In order to determine the two-photon and three-photon absorptions immediately, we also give two empirical formulas with considerable accuracy, which require only the nonlinear normalized transmittance at the focus. Moreover, we show the Gaussian decomposition method and zeroth-order Hankel transform to obtain the complex optical field at the far-field aperture. We find that the former frequently used fails to describe the propagation process for the large nonlinear imaginary phase shift. The influence of linear transmittance of aperture and the multiphoton absorption on the measurement of nonlinear refractive index are also analyzed in detail. In addition, we show the competition relationship between low-order and high-order optical nonlinearities, depending on the intensities at different z positions.

Abstract:A single-laser-shot reflection imaging technique, which can measure the nonlinear optical refraction of the surface of material possessing limited transparency, is present. Using the model of the reflection 4f coherent imaging system with phase object, we analyze the phase and amplitude characteristics of the beam reflected from the interface. With the help of computer and MATLAB, we have done some theoretical analysis and got some conclusions including advantages and disadvantages. Our model and its corresponding simulation is presented in order to validate our approach. 2009 SPIE.

Abstract:Nonlinear absorption is fundamental nonlinear effect between laser and optical material.Reverse saturable absorption and two photon absorption are two kinds of familiar nonlinear absorption and both of them could enhance the absorption.Generally it’s difficult to tell the real nonresonant absorption mechanism(i.e.,in the transparency regime) when they may both happen.This study analysis the possibility to solve this problem with the pump-probe measurement by numerical simulation.

Abstract:Nonlinear refraction of a thick sample is investigated using a modified transmittance measurement technique with a phase object. Nonlinear refraction can be investigated using a single-shot beam in this technique, and various optical nonlinearities are investigated. Numerical simulation is obtained by solving the electromagnetic wave equations, and agrees with experimental results.

Abstract:Multiphoton absorption is of vital importance in many spectroscopic, microscopic, or lithographic applications. However, given that it is an inherently weak process, the detection of multiphoton absorption signals typically requires large field intensities, hindering its applicability in many practical situations. In this Letter, we show that placing a multiphoton absorbent inside an imbalanced nonlinear interferometer can enhance the precision of multiphoton cross section estimation with respect to strategies based on photon-number measurements using coherent or even squeezed light directly transmitted through the medium. In particular, the power scaling of the sensitivity with photon flux can be increased by 1 order compared with transmission measurements of the sample with coherent light, such that the measurement precision at any given intensity can be greatly enhanced. Furthermore, we show that this enhanced measurement precision is robust against experimental imperfections leading to photon losses, which usually tend to degrade the detection sensitivity. We trace the origin of this enhancement to an optimal degree of squeezing which has to be generated in a nonlinear SU(1,1) interferometer.

Abstract:The Z-scan technique is a popular method for measuring optical nonlinearities using a single laser beam. We describe a simplified second Z-scan technique for cases where nonlinear refraction is accompanied by nonlinear absorption to separately evaluate the nonlinear refraction and the nonlinear absorption by performing straightforward measurement with the aperture removed. We divide the normalized transmittance of the closed aperture (S < 1) Z-scan by that of the open-aperture (S = 1) Z-scan. It is found that not only the ratio rho of the imaginary part chi(I)((3)) to the real part chi(R)((3)) of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility chi((3)) but also the linear transmittance S of the aperture has a great influence on the performance of the second Z-scan. Some useful results, which determine whether a second Z-scan can be performed or not, have been obtained for the rho dependence of the critical linear transmittance S-c of the aperture and S dependence of the critical ratio rho(c). These results may be applied to timely adjusted experimental conditions in order to obtain highly accurate data. We demonstrate this method on a CH3OH solution of Co2L3 with 7 ns laser pulses.

Abstract:We report that a modified Z-scan method by nonlinear ellipse rotation (NER) can be used to discriminate true nonlinear refraction from thermal effect in the transient regime and steady state. The combination of Z-scan and NER allows us to measure the third-order nonlinear susceptibility component without the influence of thermal-optical nonlinearity. The experimental results of pure CS(2) and CS(2) solutions of nigrosine verify that the transient thermal effect can be successfully eliminated from the NER-modified Z-scan measurements. This method is also extended to the case in which thermal-optical nonlinearities depend on a high repetition rate of femtosecond laser pulses for the N,N-dimethylmethanamide solutions of graphene oxide.

Abstract:A one-laser-shot measurement technique, which can characterize the nonlinear optical properties of the film prepared on the opaque substrates conveniently and exactly, is presented. This method is based on the reflection 4f coherent imaging system with phase objects. The proposed technique is examined in the case of a novel ultrathin film [CuPc(COONa)4]/PDDA coated on an opaque silicon substrate with 532nm picosecond laser pulses. By measuring the reflected intensity, but not the transmitted one, we verify both nonlinear absorption and refraction of the coated thin film. This progress obviously ensures that nonlinearities caused by reflection of opaque surfaces are measurable.
