Abstract:Background Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are an important class of genetic marker for target gene mapping. As of yet, there is no rapid and effective method to identify SNPs linked with agronomic traits in rapeseed and other crop species. Methodology/Principal Findings We demonstrate a novel method for identifying SNP markers in rapeseed by deep sequencing a representative library and performing bulk segregant analysis. With this method, SNPs associated with rapeseed pod shatter-resistance were discovered. Firstly, a reduced representation of the rapeseed genome was used. Genomic fragments ranging from 450–550 bp were prepared from the susceptible bulk (ten F2 plants with the silique shattering resistance index, SSRI <0.10) and the resistance bulk (ten F2 plants with SSRI >0.90), and also Solexa sequencing-produced 90 bp reads. Approximately 50 million of these sequence reads were assembled into contigs to a depth of 20-fold coverage. Secondly, 60,396 ‘simple SNPs’ were identified, and the statistical significance was evaluated using Fisher's exact test. There were 70 associated SNPs whose –log10 p value over 16 were selected to be further analyzed. The distribution of these SNPs appeared a tight cluster, which consisted of 14 associated SNPs within a 396 kb region on chromosome A09. Our evidence indicates that this region contains a major quantitative trait locus (QTL). Finally, two associated SNPs from this region were mapped on a major QTL region. Conclusions/Significance 70 associated SNPs were discovered and a major QTL for rapeseed pod shatter-resistance was found on chromosome A09 using our novel method. The associated SNP markers were used for mapping of the QTL, and may be useful for improving pod shatter-resistance in rapeseed through marker-assisted selection and map-based cloning. This approach will accelerate the discovery of major QTLs and the cloning of functional genes for important agronomic traits in rapeseed and other crop species.
Reversal of Long-Latency Reflexes in First Dorsal Interosseous During a Force-Tracking Task.

Abstract:Cutaneous reflexes in response to electrical stimulation of the index finger were recorded from first dorsal interosseous (1DI) at specified force levels under three conditions: during a static posture and during the incremental and decremental phases of a sinusoidal, force-tracking task. Under static conditions, while 1DI generated a steady force [10, 20 or 30% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC)], four reflex components could be identified: E1, I1, E2 and I2. The amplitudes of these components were measured as the subjects tracked a 0.5 Hz sine wave by gradually changing the force output of 1DI between zero and 40% MVC. E1 and I1 showed minimal changes from the static condition, while activity during the E2 period was inhibitory during the incremental phase and excitatory during the decremental phase of tracking. Abrupt switching from inhibition to excitation during the E2 period occurred around the transition from incremental to decremental force. Activity during the I2 period was less markedly modulated than that during E2. Reflex reversal during the E2 interval may function to reduce the rate of change of force under conditions requiring precise force-control.
Arm Movements Effect On Grasping Force Prediction Using Surface Electromyography Signals

Abstract:This study investigated the arm movements effect on the relationship between surface electromyography (EMG) signals and grasping force. An experiment was conducted with four static arm conditions and two dynamic arm conditions. Six able-bodied subjects participated in the experiment. Surface EMG signals were acquired from five forearm muscles to build a multiple linear regression model. Subjects were instructed to complete three kinds of calibration tasks to train the model and one voluntarily varying grasping force task to test the model performance. The grasping force exerted by each subject was limited to be lower than 50% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) grasping force. Mean absolute difference (MAD) between predicted and observed grasping force was used to estimate the prediction performance. The window size of moving average filter was firstly optimized. Results showed that arm movements had a significant impact on grasping force prediction performance. Inter-condition MADs (training data and testing data are from different arm conditions) were greater than intra-condition MADs (training data and testing data are from the same arm condition, average 7.41% +/- 1.46% MVC vs. 6.03 +/- % 0.40% MVC, p = 0.023). A multi-condition training scheme was applied to attenuate the arm movements effect. The multi-condition training scheme was proved to be useful to improve the model robustness to the arm movements effect.

Abstract:Using a non-linear dynamic model based on the lambda version of the equilibrium-point hypothesis, we investigated the shape and duration of the control patterns underlying discrete elbow movements. The model incorporates neural control variables, time-, position- and velocity-dependent intrinsic muscle and reflex properties. Two control variables (R and C) specify a positional frame of reference for activation of flexor and extensor motoneurons. The variable R (reciprocal command) specifies the referent joint angle (R) at which the transition of net flexor to extensor active torque or vice versa can be observed during changes in the actual joint angle elicited by an external force. The variable C (coactivation command) surrounds the transition angle by an angular range in which flexor and extensor muscles may be simultaneously active (if C > 0) or silent (if C < or = 0). An additional, time-dimensional control variable (mu command) influences the dependency of the threshold of the stretch reflex on movement velocity. This control variable is responsible for the reflex damping. Changes in the R command result in shifts in the equilibrium state of the system, a dynamical process leading to electromyographic modifications and movement production. Commands C and mu provide movement stability and effective energy dissipation preventing oscillations at the end of movement. A comparison of empirical and model data was carried out. A monotonic ramp-shaped pattern of the R command can account for the empirical kinematic and electromyographic patterns of the fastest elbow flexion movements made with or without additional inertia, as well as of self-paced movements. The rate of the shifts used in simulation was different for the three types of movements but independent of movement distance (20-80 degrees). This implies that, for a given type of movement, the distance is encoded by the duration of shift in the equilibrium state. The model also reproduces the kinematic and electromyographic patterns of the fastest uncorrected movements opposed in random trials by a high load (80-90% of the maximal) generated by position feedback to a torque motor. The following perturbation effects were simulated: a substantial decrease in the arm displacement (from 60-70 degrees to 5-15 degrees) and movement duration (to about 100 ms) so that these movements ended near the peak velocity of those which were not perturbed; a prolongation of the first agonist electromyographic burst as long as the load was applied; the suppression of the antagonist burst during the dynamic and static phases of movements: the reappearance of the antagonist burst in response to unloading accompanied by a short-latency suppression of agonist activity. These kinematic and electromyographic features of both perturbed and non-perturbed movements were reproduced by using the same control patterns which elicited a monotonic shift in the equilibrium state of the system ending before the peak velocity of non-perturbed movements. Our results suggest that the neural control processes underlying the fastest unopposed changes in the arm position are completed long before the end of the movement and phasic electromyographic activity. Neither the timing nor the amplitude of electromyographic bursts are planned but rather they represent the long-lasting dynamic response of central, reflex and mechanical components of the system to a monotonic, short-duration shift in the system's equilibrium state.

Abstract:SUMMARY: Experiments in humans and in monkeys have indicated that load perturbations, occurring during voluntary movements and postural activity, may be automatically compensated for. Overall muscle stiffness opposing load changes is determined by the viscoelastic properties of the muscle, by segmental reflex actions and finally by long-loop reflexes. Under certain circumstances, for instance when the subject or the experimental monkey is “prepared” to counteract perturbations which are unpredictable in time, the long-loop “reflexes” appear to be responsible for most of the corrective muscle tension. Experiments in anaesthetized monkeys revealed that signals from stretch afferents reach neurons of the motor cortex, possibly via a relay in the cortical area 3a. The latencies of these responses to well controlled muscle stretches were in the same range as motor cortical cell discharges recorded in alert monkeys subjected to load perturbations. Furthermore, these responses of cells in the motor cortex also had the appropriate timing to indicate a causal relationship with the long-latency electromyographic responses to load changes referred to above. These experimental results therefore strongly support the hypothesis, first proposed by Phillips (1969), of a transcortical servoloop adjusting motor cortical output according to the load conditions in which movements are performed. The major advantage of transcortical regulations as opposed to segmental regulations, seems to be a powerful gain control acting at the cortical level; it was repeatedly shown that the long-loop reflexes are strongly modifiable and under voluntary control. It is suggested that an adaptive gain control at the cortical level is a prerequisite to preserve the complex capabilities of the motor cortex as the chief "executive" for skilled, preprogrammed movements. A loss of this adaptive gain control may be, at least partly, the cause of motor disorders such as rigidity in Parkinsonian patients, as reported by Tatton and Lee (1975). It is suggested that further investigations of the control of transcortical reflexes may aid in the understanding of the pathophysiology of motor disabilities.

Expectation of volitional arm movement has prolonged effects on the grip force exerted on a pinched object

Abstract:Humans closely coordinate the grip force exerted on a hand-held object with changes in the load arising from the object's dynamics. Recent work suggests the grip force is responsive to the predictability of the load forces as well. The well-known grip-force-load-force coupling is intermittent when the load arising from volitional movements fluctuates predictably, whereas grip force increases when loads are unpredictable. Here, we studied the influence of expected but uncertain volitional movements on the digit forces during a static grasp. Young, healthy participants used a pinch grasp to hold an instrumented object and track visual targets by moving the object. We quantified the mean grip force, the temporal decline in grip force (slacking), and the coupling between the pressing digit forces that yield the grip force during static prehension with no expectation of movement, and during the static phase of a choice reaction time task, when the participant expected to move the object after a variable duration. Simply expecting to move the object led to sustained (for at least 5 s) higher magnitude and lower slacking in the grip force, and weaker coupling between the pressing digit forces. These effects were modulated by the direction of the expected movement and the object's mass. The changes helped to maintain the safety margin for the current grasp and likely facilitated the transition from static to dynamic object manipulation. Influence of expected actions on the current grasp may have implications for manual dexterity and its well-known loss with age.
Electromyographic Activity in a Distant Muscle During Simple Voluntary Movements: an Unexpected Hand-Eye Linkage.

Abstract:PURPOSE Supraspinal sensorimotor maps contain adjacent representations of the hand and face. These experiments were designed to determine whether interactions between the representations could be detected at the periphery. METHODS Simultaneous EMG recordings were made from orbicularis oculi and wrist flexor during three conditions, with 50 repetitions each: during exposure to an auditory cue; responding to the auditory cue by wrist flexion; and performing a self-paced wrist flexion in the absence of an auditory cue. RESULTS In 8 of 10 healthy volunteers, the rectified, averaged EMGs showed small but consistent increases in orbicularis oculi activity during wrist flexion in the two tasks involving that movement, but not in the auditory task alone. CONCLUSION In one or more of the central sensorimotor maps, voluntary activation of the wrist flexor representation is accompanied by liminal activation of a nearby facial representation which projects to the motoneurons of orbicularis oculi.
Influence of Force-Length Relationship and Task-Specific Constraints on Finger Force-Generating Capacities

Abstract:Grip strength loss in extended and flexed wrist postures has been explained by reduced force-generating capacities of extrinsic finger flexor resulting from non-optimal length, owing to the force-length relationship. Recent works suggested that other muscles, especially wrist extensors, participate in this grip strength loss. The objective of this study was to clarify the role of the force-length relationship in finger force production. 18 participants performed maximal isometric finger force production during pinch grip (Pinch) and four-finger pressing (Press) tasks in four different wrist postures (extended, flexed, neutral, spontaneous). The maximum finger force (MFF), finger and wrist joint angles, as well as activation of four muscles were determined using dynamometry, motion capture, and electromyography. The force and length of the four muscles were estimated from joint angles and muscle activation using a musculoskeletal model. MFF decreased for flexed wrist during Pinch but remained stable across wrist postures during Press. The results suggested that the loss of pinch grip force in deviated wrist posture is partially related to force-length relationship of finger extensors. In opposition, MFF during Press was not influenced by the modulation of muscle capacities but was probably first limited by mechanical and neural factors related to finger interdependence

Training Wrist Extensor Function and Detecting Unwanted Movement Strategies in an EMG-controlled Visuomotor Task.

Abstract:Stroke patients often suffer from severe upper limb paresis. Rehabilitation treatment typically targets motor impairments as early as possible, however, muscular contractions, particularly in the wrist and fingers, are often too weak to produce overt movements, making the initial phase of rehabilitation training difficult. Here we propose a new training tool whereby electromyographic (EMG) activity is measured in the wrist extensors and serves as a proxy of voluntary corticomotor drive. We used the Myo armband to develop a proportional EMG controller which allowed volunteers to perform a simple visuomotor task by modulating wrist extensor activity. In this preliminary study six healthy participants practiced the task for one session (144 trials), which resulted in a significant reduction of the average trial time required to move and hold a cursor in different target zones (p < 0.001, ANOVA), indicating skill learning. Additionally, we implemented an EMG based classifier to distinguish between the desired movement strategy and unwanted alternatives. Validation of the classifier indicated that accuracy for detecting rest, wrist extension and unwanted strategies was 92.5 + 6.9% (M + SD) across all participants. When performing the motor task the classification algorithm flagged 4.3 + 3.5% of the trials as 'unwanted strategies', even in healthy subjects. We also report initial feedback from a survey submitted to two chronic stroke patients to inquire about feasibility and acceptance of the general setup by patients.
Fast grip force adaptation to friction relies on localized fingerpad strains

Abstract:During object manipulation, humans adjust the grip force to friction, such that slippery objects are squeezed more firmly than sticky ones. This essential mechanism to keep a stable grasp relies on feedback from tactile afferents innervating the fingertips, that are sensitive to local skin strains. To test if this feedback originates from the skin-object interface, we asked participants to perform a grip-lift task with an instrumented object able to monitor skin strains at the contact through transparent plates of different frictions. We observed that, following an unbeknown change in plate across trials, participants adapted their grip force to friction. After switching from high to low friction, we found a significant increase in strain inside the contact arising ~100 ms before the modulation of grip force, suggesting that differences in strain patterns before lift-off are used by the nervous system to quickly adjust the force to the frictional properties of manipulated objects.

Abstract:Purpose: Contraction-induced H reflexes are a late neurophysiologic response elicited with submaximal nerve stimulation during isometric muscle contraction. Mediated by spinal pathways, like other H reflexes, their use has remained somewhat limited despite a long history of development dating back to the original description by Hoffman. There is a paucity of data on normal reference ranges, which this article aims to add to. Methods: Contraction-induced H reflexes were elicited from the first dorsal interosseous, flexor carpi radialis, and tibialis anterior bilaterally in 100 healthy volunteers. Reference values, including side-to-side variation, were calculated. Pearson test and multiple regression were used to evaluate the relationship of H-reflex latency to height, age, and sex of participants. Results: The mean onset latencies of 28.00, 17.44, and 31.10 ms were seen for first dorsal interosseous, flexor carpi radialis, and tibialis anterior muscles, respectively. The calculated allowable side-to-side latency difference in individual participants was 3 to 4 ms. A correlation to participant height was seen. Conclusions: This work provides normal reference values of contraction-induced H reflexes to three muscles, including allowable side-to-side variation. The latter suggests that bilateral testing evaluating for asymmetry within an individual is likely to be optimally sensitive. The relationship to height is also confirmed.

Dynamic force-sharing in multi-digit task

Abstract:Background: Dynamic hand grasping implies sophisticated motor coordination. Most knowledge on motor synergies used in grasping is deduced from experiments based on static precision grip. This experiment was aimed at better understanding the mechanisms of finger force-sharing in an active, dynamic hand task under repetitive strain conditions. Methods: A multi-digit task consisting of holding a cylinder with the digit tips, in which the thumb and the finger opposed each other, was investigated during repetitive unidirectional wrist flexion and extension cyclic motion. Finger and thumb forces and wrist angular position were simultaneously recorded during repetitive wrist motion against 0.3-0.6 Nm load in 10 healthy adults. Findings: Load torques acting during wrist movements produced in-phase increases of the thumb and the finger forces with the wrist extension and the wrist flexion, respectively. Digit forces increased proportionally to the applied load. The alternating rise of thumb and finger forces changed instantaneously at the end of the flexion and extension phases of the movement, respectively. Six subjects predominantly used the index finger, two the middle finger, one the ring finger, and the remaining one used the small finger during wrist flexion against 0.6 Nm to perform the task. Variations among individual finger forces were negatively correlated during the phase of constant rotational velocity of the wrist flexion. Repeated measures ANOVA revealed that the percentage of individual finger contribution to the total fingers' force significantly varied during the wrist flexion (P<0.0001) and among wrist flexion cycles (P<0.0001) in each subject. Interpretation: Variations in finger force-sharing among cycles were not necessitated by task dependent activities, as the task was identical. These findings indicated that motor coordination of repeated multi-finger task allowed redundant solutions in finger force-sharing. The force-sharing variation may reflect a minimal intervention principle of the central nervous system controlling only the goal-directed parameters and might help to prevent muscle fatigue in repetitive tasks through modulation of activity in multi-digit muscles.
Analysis of interactive effect of stretch reflex and shortening reaction on rigidity in Parkinson's disease

Abstract:Objective: To examine the correlation between rigidity and interaction of stretch reflex and shortening reaction during passive movements of the wrist and to compare this correlation with that between rigidity and stretch reflex alone. Methods: Twelve subjects with Parkinson's disease participated in the study in Off-medication and On-medication states. A servomotor imposed wrist flexion and extension within +/-30 degrees at velocities 50 and 280 degrees/s, while joint torque and EMG of the wrist flexors and extensors were recorded. Rigidity was quantified by integrating torque with joint angle, i.e., objective rigidity (OR) score, for extension and flexion, respectively. The interaction between EMG responses was estimated by calculating a ratio of normalized EMG in stretched to shortened muscles for both movements. Results: The OR scores were more strongly correlated with the EMG ratios than with EMG of the stretched muscles alone. The strongest and significant correlation was found between the OR score and EMG ratio during the extension at high velocity in the Off-medication (r=0.792, p=0.002). Conclusions: Both stretch reflex and shortening reaction are important determinants of rigidity. Significance: Study findings provide new insight into mechanistic descriptions of rigidity and have implications for development and evaluation of interventions.
Parallels in control of voluntary and perturbation-evoked reach-to-grasp movements: EMG and kinematics

Abstract:To determine the potential differences in control underlying compensatory and voluntary reach-to-grasp movements the current study compared the kinematic and electromyographic profiles associated with upper limb movement. Postural perturbations were delivered to evoke compensatory reach-to-grasp in ten healthy young adult volunteers while seated on a chair that tilted as an inverted pendulum in the frontal plane. Participants reached to grasp a laterally positioned stable handhold and pulled (or pushed) to return the chair to vertical. The distinguishing characteristic between the two behaviors was the onset latency and speed of movement. Consistent with compensatory balance reactions, the perturbation-evoked reach response was initiated very rapidly (137 vs. 239 ms for voluntary). As well the movement time was shorter, and peak velocity was greater for PERT movements. In spite of the profound differences in timing, the sequence of muscle activity onsets and the order of specific kinematic events were not different between maximum velocity voluntary (VOL) and perturbation-evoked (PERT) reach-to-grasp movements. Peak velocity and grasp aperture occurred prior to hand contact with the target for PERT and VOL movements, and wrist trajectory was influenced by the direction of perturbation relative to the target. To achieve such target specific control for responses initiated within 100 ms of the perturbation, and when characteristics of body movement were unpredictable, the perturbation-evoked movements would need to incorporate sensory cues associated with body movement relative to the target into the earliest aspects of the movement. This suggests reliance on an internal spatial map constructed prior to the onset of perturbation. Parallels in electromyographic and kinematic profiles between compensatory and voluntary reach-to-grasp movements, in spite of temporal differences, lead to the view they are controlled by common neural mechanisms.
Modulations of stretch reflex by altering visuomotor contexts

Abstract:Various functional modulations of the stretch reflex help to stabilize actions, but the computational mechanism behind its context-dependent tuning remains unclear. While many studies have demonstrated that motor contexts associated with the task goal cause functional modulation of the stretch reflex of upper limbs, it is not well understood how visual contexts independent of the task requirements affect the stretch reflex. To explore this issue, we conducted two experiments testing 20 healthy human participants (age range 20–45, average 31.3 ± 9.0), in which visual contexts were manipulated in a visually guided reaching task. During wrist flexion movements toward a visual target, a mechanical load was applied to the wrist joint to evoke stretch reflex of wrist flexor muscle (flexor carpi radialis). The first experiment ( n = 10) examined the effect of altering the visuomotor transformation on the stretch reflex that was evaluated with surface electromyogram. We found that the amplitude of the stretch reflex decreased ( p = 0.024) when a rotational transformation of 90° was introduced between the hand movement and the visual cursor, whereas the amplitude did not significantly change ( p = 0.26) when the rotational transformation was accompanied by a head rotation so that the configuration of visual feedback was maintained in visual coordinates. The results suggest that the stretch reflex was regulated depending on whether the visuomotor mapping had already been acquired or not. In the second experiment ( n = 10), we examined how uncertainty in the visual target or hand cursor affects the stretch reflex by removing these visual stimuli. We found that the reflex amplitude was reduced by the disappearance of the hand cursor ( p = 0.039), but was not affected by removal of the visual target ( p = 0.27), suggesting that the visual state of the body and target contribute differently to the reflex tuning. These findings support the idea that visual updating of the body state is crucial for regulation of quick motor control driven by proprioceptive signals.

Abstract:Approximate counting [18] is useful for data stream and database summarization. It can help in many settings that allow only one pass over the data, want low memory usage, and can accept some relative error. Approximate counters use fewer bits; we focus on 8-bits but our results are general. These small counters represent a sparse sequence of larger numbers. Counters are incremented probabilistically based on the spacing between the numbers they represent. Our contributions are a customized distribution of counter values and efficient strategies for deciding when to increment them. At run-time, users may independently select the spacing (accuracy) of the approximate counter for small, medium, and large values. We allow the user to select the maximum number to count up to, and our algorithm will select the exponential base of the spacing. These provide additional flexibility over both classic and Csűrös's [4] floating-point approximate counting. These provide additional structure, a useful schema for users, over Kruskal and Greenberg [13]. We describe two new and efficient strategies for incrementing approximate counters: use a deterministic countdown or sample from a geometric distribution. In Csűrös all increments are powers of two, so random bits rather than full random numbers can be used. We also provide the option to use powers-of-two but retain flexibility. We show when each strategy is fastest in our implementation.
A case study on building COTS-based system using aspect-oriented programming

Abstract:More and more software projects are using COTS (Commercial-off-the-shelf) components. Using COTS components brings both advantages and risks. To manage some risks in using COTS components, it is necessary to increase the reusability of the glue-code so that the problematic COTS components can easily be replaced by other components. Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) claims to make it easier to reason about, develop, and maintain certain kinds of application code. To investigate whether AOP can help to build an easy-to-change COTS-based system, a case study was performed by comparing changeability between an object-oriented application and its aspect-oriented version. Results from this study show that integrating COTS component using AOP may help to increase the changeability of the COTS component-based system, if the cross-cutting concerns in the glue-code are homogenous (i.e., consistent application of the same or very similar policy in multiple places). Extracting heterogeneous or partial homogenous crosscutting concerns in glue-code as aspects does not provide benefits. Results also show that some limitations in AOP tools may make it impossible to use AOP in COTS-based development.
Sensory information from a slipping object elicits a rapid and automatic shoulder response

Abstract:Humans have the remarkable ability to hold, grasp, and manipulate objects. Previous work has reported rapid and coordinated reactions in hand and shoulder muscles in response to external perturbations to the arm during object manipulation; however, little is known about how somatosensory feedback of an object slipping in the hand influences responses of the arm. We built a handheld device to stimulate the sensation of slipping at all five fingertips. The device was integrated into an exoskeleton robot that supported it against gravity. The setup allowed us to decouple somatosensory stimulation in the fingers from forces applied to the arm, two variables that are highly interdependent in real-world scenarios. Fourteen participants performed three experiments in which we measured their arm feedback responses during slip stimulation. Slip stimulations were applied horizontally in one of two directions, and participants were instructed to either follow the slip direction or move the arm in the opposite direction. Participants showed shoulder muscle responses within ∼67 ms of slip onset when following the direction of slip but significantly slower responses when instructed to move in the opposite direction. Shoulder responses were modulated by the speed but not the distance of the slip. Finally, when slip stimulation was combined with mechanical perturbations to the arm, we found that sensory information from the fingertips significantly modulated the shoulder feedback responses. Overall, the results demonstrate the existence of a rapid feedback system that stabilizes handheld objects.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We tested whether the sensation of an object slipping from the fingers modulates shoulder feedback responses. We found rapid shoulder feedback responses when participants were instructed to follow the slip direction with the arm. Shoulder responses following mechanical joint perturbations were also potentiated when combined with slipping. These results demonstrate the existence of fast and automatic feedback responses in the arm in reaction to sensory input to the fingertips that maintain grip on handheld objects.

Abstract:Individual finger force (FF) in a grip task is a vital concern in rehabilitation engineering and precise control of manipulators because disorders in any of the fingers will affect the stability or accuracy of the grip force (GF). To understand the functions of each finger in a dynamic grip exertion task, a GF following experiment with four individual fingers without thumb was designed. This study obtained four individual FFs from the distal phalanges with a cylindrical handle in dynamic GF following tasks. Ten healthy male subjects with similar hand sizes participated in the four-finger linear GF following tasks at different submaximal voluntary contraction (SMVC) levels. The total GF, individual FF, finger force contribution, and following error were subsequently calculated and analyzed. The statistics indicated the following: 1) the accuracy and stability of GF at low %MVC were significantly higher than those at high SMVC; 2) at low SMVC, the ability of the fingers to increase the GF was better than the ability to reduce it, but it was contrary at high SMVC; 3) when the target wave (TW) was changing, all four fingers strongly participated in the force exertion, but the participation of the little finger decreased significantly when TW remained stable; 4) the index finger and ring finger had a complementary relationship and played a vital role in the adjustment and control of GF. The middle finger and little finger had a minor influence on the force control and adjustment. In conclusion, each of the fingers had different functions in a GF following task. These findings can be used in the assessment of finger injury rehabilitation and for algorithms of precise control.
