Abstract:The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia is a fast-spreading respiratory infectious disease caused by the novel coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which is characterized by its high transmissibility, and significant morbidity and mortality rates worldwide. [ 1 ] Since its outbreak in early 2020, this pandemic has posed a significant threat to global health, resulting in >770 million cumulative cases, and nearly 7 million deaths in over 180 countries, according to the World Health Organization COVID-19 Dashboard ( https://covid19.who.int/ ). The symptoms of COVID-19 vary from mild constitutional symptoms to pneumonia, sepsis, and in some cases, severe acute respiratory distress syndrome, requiring hospitalization and admission to intensive care units. [ 2 ] Furthermore, there were patients who tested positive for COVID-19, but remained asymptomatic. [ 3 ] A growing number of studies have been conducted to investigate the complications associated to COVID-19, aiming to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology of this disease.
