Psychiatrists urge the government to reform the immigration system

Abstract:The Labour government has an opportunity to not only reverse the harmful immigration legislation introduced by the previous government, but implement reforms to protect the mental health of those seeking sanctuary, the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) has said.1In a report the college looked at the impact on mental health of asylum changes set in motion between 2022 and 2024, such as the Nationality and Borders Act 2022 (NABA), the Illegal Migration Act 2023 (IMA), and the Safety of Rwanda Act 2024. These changes have made the asylum process much more difficult for people to navigate, made it easier to deport people, and have criminalised irregular arrivals such as those who cross the Channel on small boats.
