Abstract:This month marks the 50th anniversary of Nucleic Acids Research ('NAR') . Led by a team of three founding editors (Richard T. Walker and A. Stanley Jones at the University of Birmingham in the UK and Dieter Söll at Yale University in the USA), the journal was formed for the publication of 'original papers dealing with the physical, chemical, biochemical, biological or medical properties of nucleic acids, their constituents and analogs' (1). The introduction to the inaugural issue went on to state that the journal's mission would be to promote 'interdisciplinary means of communication that will enable scientists in one specialty to see more clearly the points of contact and importance between their work and that of others.' That first issue featured fifteen research articles, spanning studies of DNA polymerase mechanism (2), tRNA modification and reactivity (3,4), DNA methylation (5) and ribosome assembly (6,7). Starting a trend that continues in the present-day journal, several additional papers described new methods, for the study of nucleic acid sequence composition, labeling or synthesis (8–10).

Abstract:Forty years ago, Horace Judson's The Eighth Day of Creation was published, a book vividly recounting the foundations of modern biology, the molecular biology revolution. This book inspired many in my generation. The anniversary provides a chance for a new generation to take a look back, to see how science has and hasn't changed. Many central players in the book, including Sydney Brenner, Seymour Benzer, and François Jacob, would go on to be among the founders of modern cell biology, developmental biology, and neurobiology. These players come alive via their own words, as complex individuals, both heroes and anti-heroes. The technologies and experimental approaches they pioneered, ranging from cell fractionation to immunoprecipitation to structural biology, and the multidisciplinary approaches they took continue to power and inspire our work today. In the process, Judson brings out of the shadows the central roles played by women in many of the era's discoveries. He provides us with a vision of how science and scientists have changed, of how many things about our endeavor never change, and of how some new ideas are perhaps not as new as we would like to think.

Abstract:Fifteen years ago, the field of cell and organ printing began with a few research groups looking to take newly developed direct-write tools and apply them to living cells. Initial experiments demonstrated cell viability and functionality post-deposition. Recently, research has begun in earnest to create three-dimensional cellular constructs that mimic both the heterogeneous structure and function of natural tissue. Several companies are now marketing cell printers, expanding access to a wider group of scientists and accelerating the pace of development. This article describes the past decade and a half of research by showing examples of some of the most sophisticated work, comparing the approaches and tools used in the field, and predicting the products that will arrive in the not too distant future.

Abstract:Immunology & Cell Biology celebrated its 100‐year birthday as a journal with an editorial workshop focused on how we can improve the author experience. In our renewed editorial policies, we articulate our editorial focus on the quality of the scientific question and the robustness of the conclusions, including a new "scoop protection" policy to live our values. The journal is dedicated to maintaining its relationship with reviewers, enabling rapid quality peer review, but is also opening new lines of submission with expedited cross‐platform assessment of reviews and incorporation into the Review Commons submission pipeline. In 2024 we will expand our social media promotion of articles and build on the career development resource of Immunology Futures. Here we lay out the ethos, numbers and rationale behind ICB's renewed author‐centric publication policies for 2024.

Abstract:Next year marks the 100 th anniversary of Edmund B. Wilson's iconic book 'The Cell in Development and Heredity'. Its actual centennial would have been 1996 (the first edition), but it was the third (1925) that caught on. With penetrating erudition Wilson presented the nucleus in a sweeping landscape of topics such as mitosis, meiosis, fertilization, sex determination and embryonic development. I am currently writing a historical reflection on the book but for this editorial it, and its author, stand deservedly as the point of departure.

Here, I discuss conceptual connections linking fundamental discoveries that were enabled by the technology, advances in the understanding of gene regulation in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, and the recent FDA-approved CRISPR-based gene therapy for sickle cell anemia and β-thalassemia based on transcriptional derepression.
