Abstract:On 30 October 2020 at 11:51 UT, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred in the Dodecanese sea (37.84°N, 26.81°E, 10 km depth) and generated a tsunami with an observed run-up of more than 1 m on the Turkish coasts. Both the earthquake and the tsunami produced acoustic and gravity waves that propagated upward, triggering co-seismic and co-tsunamic ionospheric disturbances. This paper presents a multi-instrumental study of the ionospheric impact of the earthquake and related tsunami based on ionosonde data, ground-based Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) data and data from DORIS beacons received by Jason3 in the Mediterranean region. Our study focuses on the Total Electron Content to describe the propagation of co-seismic and co-tsunami ionospheric disturbances (CSID, CTID), possibly related to gravity waves triggered by the earthquake and tsunami. We use simultaneous vertical ionosonde soundings to study the interactions between the upper and lower atmosphere, highlighting the detection of acoustic waves generated by the seismic Rayleigh waves reaching the ionosonde locations and propagating vertically up to the ionosphere. The results of this study provide a detailed picture of the Lithosphere-Atmosphere–Ionosphere coupling in the scarcely investigated Mediterranean region and for a relatively weak earthquake.

Abstract:From 1980 to 2021, earthquakes have caused more than 846 000 casualties and about US$ 661 billion in economic losses. At present, there are no reliable earthquake precursors to generate alerts. Currently, the link between earthquakes and total electron content variations measured by global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) monitoring ground stations has been studied. However, GNSS ground-based monitoring stations are irregularly disseminated around the globe with significant gaps, particularly in the ocean's regions. In this article, we analyze ionospheric intensity scintillation anomalies as potential proxies of earthquakes. NASA CYGNSS GNSS-R (reflectometry) acquired by CYGNSS/delay Doppler mapping instrument from 2017 to 2021 has been used to calculate and analyze the anomalies in the S4 parameter over ocean areas affected by earthquakes. More than 30 000 ocean earthquakes within ±40° in latitude and with a magnitude larger than M4 have been examined. The daily planetary geomagnetic index Kp was used to discard data that may be disturbed due to space weather conditions. In addition, a daily sea wind speed mask was used to eliminate sea states that impact the signal reflectivity. The standard deviation and the interquartile time series methods have been used to detect these S4 anomalies. The confusion matrix, the receiver operating curve, and some other figures of merit have been used for the first time to evaluate and improve the performance of the prediction parameters and identify the optimum configuration to be used as a potential proxy of earthquake occurrence. As a result, a small, but detectable positive S4 anomaly was detected between 1 and 7 days before the earthquakes under study.

Abstract:This study demonstrates a rich complexity of the time–frequency ionospheric signal spectrum, dependent on the measurement type and platform. Different phenomena contributing to satellite-derived and ground-derived geophysical data that only selected signal bands can be potentially sensitive to seismicity over time, and they are applicable in lithosphere–atmosphere–ionosphere coupling (LAIC) studies. In this study, satellite-derived and ground-derived ionospheric observations are filtered by a Fourier-based band-pass filter, and an experimental selection of potentially sensitive frequency bands has been carried out. This work focuses on band-pass filtered ionospheric observations and seismic activity in the region of the Aegean Sea over a two-year time period (2020–2021), with particular focus on the entire system of tectonic plate junctions, which are suspected to be a potential source of ionospheric disturbances distributed over hundreds of kilometers. The temporal evolution of seismicity power in the Aegean region is represented by the record of earthquakes characterized by M ≥ 4.5, used for the estimation of cumulative seismic energy. The ionospheric response to LAIC is explored in three data types: short inspections of in situ electron density (Ne) over a tectonic plate boundary by Swarm satellites, stationary determination of three Ne density profile parameters by the Athens Digisonde station AT138 (maximum frequency of the F2 layer: foF2; maximum frequency of the sporadic E layer: foEs; and frequency spread: ff), and stationary measure of vertical total electron content (VTEC) interpolated from a UPC-IonSAT Quarter-of-an-hour time resolution Rapid Global ionospheric map (UQRG) near Athens. The spectrograms are made with the use of short-term Fourier transform (STFT). These frequency bands in the spectrograms, which show a notable coincidence with seismicity, are filtered out and compared to cumulative seismic energy in the Aegean Sea, to the geomagnetic Dst index, to sunspot number (SN), and to the solar radio flux (F10.7). In the case of Swarm, STFT allows for precise removal of long-wavelength Ne signals related to specific latitudes. The application of STFT to time series of ionospheric parameters from the Digisonde station and GIM VTEC is crucial in the removal of seasonal signals and strong diurnal and semi-diurnal signal components. The time series formed from experimentally selected wavebands of different ionospheric observations reveal a moderate but notable correlation with the seismic activity, higher than with any solar radiation parameter in 8 out of 12 cases. The correlation coefficient must be treated relatively and with caution here, as we have not determined the shift between seismic and ionospheric events, as this process requires more data. However, it can be observed from the spectrograms that some weak signals from selected frequencies are candidates to be related to seismic processes.

Abstract:This research work examines earthquake-induced ionospheric anomalies through an in-depth analysis of Total Electron Content (TEC) parameter. It involves modeling the ionospheric F2-layer by processing geodetic and geophysical data to generate regional TEC maps. Additionally, a geodetic approach is developed for short-term seismic hazard prediction, grounded in seismo-ionospheric interactions. This study supports the concept that the occupied space between the lithosphere and ionosphere forms a coherent structure of electrons and protons, ensuring the transmission of electromagnetic waves generated during the seismic nucleation of rocks at depths. Therefore, the analysis of GPS-TEC signals using both wavelet-based and statistical techniques is crucial for detecting the arrival time of pre-earthquake ionospheric anomalies. The study assesses the effectiveness of the applied geodetic approach, using datasets from ground-based GPS/GNSS stations in an area proportional to seismic wave propagation. In-depth investigation of the Mw 5.1 shallow-moderate earthquake, that shook the Spanish city of Lorca on May 11th, 2011, revealed consistent outcomes in short-term seismic prediction. The forecasts indicated a lead time ranging from hours to days prior to the occurrence of the mainshock. These findings affirm the coupling hypothesis between the lithospheric and ionospheric envelopes allowing the prediction of imminent earthquakes over seismogenic regions.

Abstract:In this article, we show the capability of a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) precise orbit determination (POD) low Earth orbit (LEO) data to detect anomalous ionospheric disturbances in the spectral range of the signals associated with earthquakes and tsunamis, applied to two of these events in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the Solomon Islands during 2016. This is achieved thanks to the new PIES approach (POD-GNSS LEO Detrended Ionospheric Electron Content Significant Deviations). The significance of such ionospheric signals above the swarm LEOs is confirmed with different types of independent data: in situ electron density measurements provided by the Langmuir Probe (LP) onboard swarm LEOs, DORIS, and ground-based GNSS colocated measurements, as it is described in this article. In this way, we conclude the possible detection of the tsunami-related ionospheric gravity wave in PNG 2016 event, consistent with the most-recent theory, which shows that a tsunami (which is localized in space and time) excites a spectrum of gravity waves, some of which have faster horizontal phase speeds than the tsunami. We believe that this work shows as well the feasibility of a future potential monitoring system of ionospheric disturbances, to be made possible by hundreds of CubeSats with POD GNSS receivers among other appropriate sensors, and supported for real-time or near real-time confirmation and characterization by thousands of worldwide existing ground GNSS receivers.

Abstract:Lithosphere–atmosphere–ionosphere coupling models have been widely studied as potential earthquake precursors. After the earthquakes, total electron content (TEC) anomalies propagating away from the epicenter have been identified. Recent evidence has also found that electromagnetic phenomena related to earthquakes might also produce ionospheric anomalies before their occurrence. This study analyzes the correlation between ionospheric intensity scintillation, characterized by the index, and seismic activity in the area around the Coral Sea in the year 2022. The intensity scintillation index derived from COSMIC-2 global navigation satellite system radio occultation estimates ionospheric perturbations and identifies anomalies. The methodology involves applying rigorous filters to ensure reliable estimation, including slant TEC thresholding and night-time filtering. To compare the scintillation index with seismic activity, the mean and the 95th percentile of the values are computed at 1-d intervals. Two case studies of earthquakes in 2022 with magnitudes larger than 6 are presented, as well as a statistical analysis based on the calculation of the confusion matrices, and the receiver operating characteristic curves. A positive correlation between the ionospheric intensity scintillation and the occurrence of earthquakes is found, with a probability of detection exceeding 35.7 % and a false alarm rate of 7.1 %.

Abstract:On 4 March 2021, a devastating M8.1 earthquake struck the Kermadec Islands of New Zealand. Given the tremendous energy released during the event, we sought to investigate the event's potential impact on the ionosphere and the inner Van Allen Belt using data from the high-energy electron detectors on board the NOAA-18 satellite. The survey was also extended to the strongest shallow M6.5+ earthquakes occurring between 150° and 190° in longitude, and between −5° and −35° in latitude over the previous ten years. In nearly all cases, evident electron fluxes entering the loss cone were observed. To explore the possibility of a connection between ionospheric signals and tectonic events in this intensely active region, we analyzed electron losses from the inner Van Allen Belt, taking into account latitude, longitude, day/night times, and proximity to the South Atlantic Anomaly. Compared to previous studies, here only the most significant loss phenomena persistent in the ionosphere were considered. Particular interest was reserved for the intense electron loss events that had a duration spanning from a few to several minutes and occurred several hours before and after strong seismic events. Thereafter, time series of electron counting rates and strong Southern Pacific earthquakes were transformed into binary series, and the series multiplication was investigated. The results suggest four peaks of association, including a first couple between electron perturbations detected for ascending semi-orbits and seismic events and a second one between electron perturbations detected in the southern ionosphere and seismic events. They both anticipated the occurrence of earthquakes, occurring around 4 h before them. Other couples were observed between electron perturbations detected for descending semi-orbits and seismic events and between electron perturbations detected in the northern ionosphere and seismic events. They both occurred around 3 h after the occurrence of earthquakes. The case of perturbations anticipating seismic events has the intriguing properties of sustaining the hypothesis that a physical interaction occurred around 6 h before seismic events as in the West Pacific case. A physical model of electrons detected far several thousands of km from the earthquake epicenters was also presented. However, a simulation of random seismic events suggested that the null hypothesis cannot be fully rejected for these associations, prompting many more analyses and case studies.

Abstract:We study the sub-ionospheric VLF transmitter signals recorded by the Austrian Graz station in the year 2020. Those radio signals are known to propagate in the Earth-ionosphere waveguide between the ground and lower ionosphere. The Austrian Graz facility (geographic coordinates: 15.46°E, 47.03°N) can receive such sub-ionospheric transmitter signals, particularly those propagating above earthquake (EQ) regions in the southern part of Europe. We consider in this work the transmitter amplitude variations recorded a few weeks before the occurrence of two EQs in Croatia at a distance less than 200 km from Graz VLF facility. The selected EQs happened on 22 March 2020 and 29 December 2020, with magnitudes of Mw5.4 and Mw6.4, respectively, epicenters localized close to Zagreb (16.02°E, 45.87°N; 16.21°E, 45.42°N), and with focuses of depth smaller than 10 km. In our study we emphasize the anomaly fluctuations before/after the sunrise times, sunset times, and the cross-correlation of transmitter signals. We attempt to evaluate and to estimate the latitudinal and the longitudinal expansions of the ionospheric disturbances related to the seismic preparation areas.

Abstract:Despite routine detection of coseismic acoustic‐gravity waves (AGWs) in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) total electron content (TEC) observations, models of the earthquake‐atmosphere‐ionosphere dynamics, essential for validating data‐driven studies, remain limited. We present the results of three‐dimensional numerical simulations encompassing the entire coupling from Earth's interior to the ionosphere during the Mw 7.8 2016 Kaikoura earthquake. Incorporating the impact of data/model uncertainties in estimating the ionospheric state, the results show a good agreement between observed and simulated slant TEC (sTEC) signals, assessed through a set of metrics. The signals exhibit intricate waveforms, resulting from the integrated nature of TEC and phase cancellation effects, emphasizing the significance of direct signal comparisons along realistic line‐of‐sight paths. By comparing simulation results initialized with kinematic and dynamic source models, the study demonstrates the quantifiable sensitivity of sTEC to AGW source specifications, pointing to their utility in the analysis of coupled dynamics.

Abstract:The Lithospheric–Atmospheric–Ionospheric Coupling (LAIC) mechanism stands as the leading model for the prediction of seismic activities. It consists of a cascade of physical processes that are initiated days before a major earthquake. The onset is marked by the discharge of ionized gases, such as radon, through subterranean fissures that develop in the lead-up to the quake. This discharge augments the ionization at the lower atmospheric layers, instigating disturbances that extend from the Earth's surface to the lower ionosphere. A critical component of the LAIC sequence involves the distinctive perturbations of Extremely Low Electromagnetic Frequencies (ELF) within the Schumann Resonances (SR) spectrum of 2 to 50 Hz, detectable days ahead of the seismic event. Our study examines 10 earthquakes that transpired over a span of 3.5 months—averaging nearly three quakes monthly—which concurrently generated 45 discernible potential precursor seismic signals. Notably, each earthquake originated in Southern Greece, within a radius of 30 to 250 km from the observatory on Mount Parnon. Our research seeks to resolve two important issues. The first concerns the association between specific ELF signals and individual earthquakes—a question of significant importance in seismogenic regions like Greece, where earthquakes occur frequently. The second inquiry concerns the parameters that determine the detectability of an earthquake by a given station, including the requisite proximity and magnitude. Initial findings suggest that SR signals can be reliably linked to a particular earthquake if the observatory is situated within the earthquake's preparatory zone. Conversely, outside this zone, the correlation becomes indeterminate. Additionally, we observe a differentiation in SR signals based on whether the earthquake took place over land or offshore. The latter category exhibits unique signal behaviors, potentially attributable to the water layers above the epicenter acting as a barrier to the ascending gases, thereby affecting the atmospheric–ionospheric ionization process.

Abstract:Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is used in seismology to study the ground displacements as well as to monitor the ionospheric total electron content (TEC) perturbations following seismic events. The aim of this work is to combine these two observations in one real-time method based on the Total Variometric Approach (TVA) to include the GNSS real-time data stream in future warning systems and tsunami genesis estimation observing both, ground motion and TEC. Our TVA couples together the Variometric Approach for Displacement Analysis Stand-alone Engine (VADASE) with the Variometric Approach for Real-Time Ionosphere Observation (VARION) algorithms. We apply the TVA to the Mw 8.3 Illapel earthquake, that occurred in Chile on September 16, 2015, and we demonstrate the coherence of the earthquake ground shaking and the TEC perturbation by using the same GNSS data stream in a real-time scenario. Nominally, we also highlight a stronger kinetic energy released in the north of the epicenter and visible in both, the ground motion and the TEC perturbation detect at 30 s and around 9.5 min after the rupture respectively. The high spatial resolution of ionospheric TEC measurement seems to match with the extent of the seismic source. The GNSS data stream by TVA of both the ground and ionospheric measurement opens today new perspectives to real-time warning systems for tsunami genesis estimation.

Abstract:Seismicity in the Ionian Sea (W. Greece) is mainly generated along the Cephalonia–Lefkada Transform Fault Zone (CLTFZ) in the central Ionian, and on the northwestern termination of the Hellenic subduction margin in the south. Joint pre-, co- and post-seismic ground deformation and seismological analysis is performed at the broad Ionian area, aiming to homogeneously study the spatiotemporal evolution of the activity prior to and after the occurrence of strong (M > 6) earthquakes during the period of 2014–2018. The 2014 Cephalonia earthquakes (Mw6.1 and Mw5.9) were generated on a faulting system adjacent to CLTFZ, causing local ground deformation. The post-seismic sequence is coupled in space and time with the 2015 Lefkada earthquake (Mw6.4), which occurred on the Lefkada segment of the CLTFZ. Co-seismic displacement was recorded in the broader area. Seismicity was concentrated along the CLTFZ, while its temporal evolution lasted for several months. The 2018 Zakynthos earthquake (Mw6.7) caused regional deformation and alterations on the near-velocity field, with the seismicity rate remaining above background levels until the end of 2021. In the northern Ionian, convergence between the Apulian platform and the Hellenic foreland occurs, exhibiting low seismicity. Seismic hazard assessment revealed high PGA and PGV expected values in the central Ionian.

Abstract:In this study, we investigated oscillatory disturbances in the atmosphere [from GNSS-derived ionospheric slant total electron content (STEC)] and in the solid Earth (from triaxial seismic data) following the 4 August 2020 Beirut port explosion in Lebanon. The ionospheric disturbances were investigated under meticulous observations of the space weather indices. The STEC sequences were analyzed by the Savitzky-Golay smoothing filter to check the ionospheric response to the blast. Our results showed that the induced wave structures have significant multiple ionospheric disturbances associated with the explosion epicenter. The research findings showed that the ionosphere responds to the severe blast with two time arrivals. The first time arrival was after the blast within a few minutes and had a low frequency. The second time arrival for the ionospheric disturbance was after > 2 h from the explosion time with high frequency compared with the first one. These ionospheric disturbances were associated with the time and space of the blast. The speed of induced waves in the northern direction of the explosion was slower than the waves in the western and the southern directions, respectively. Finally, the seismological data revealed that there were two major blasts in the Beirut port. The first blast triggered a severe blast after 5 s. Our results are a significant indication that the ionospheric disturbances are influenced by the acoustic gravity wave activity induced by the blast rather than by other random events.

Abstract:During the propagation of a tsunami, gravity and sound waves can be produced, spreading from its source to the ionosphere's upper layers, thus generating perturbed electron densities in its E and F regions. These ionospheric disturbances can be studied in detail using measurements of the ionosphere's Total Electron Content (TEC), registered by permanent GNSS stations. In this contribution, the foundations of the VARION method (Variometric Approach for Real-time Ionosphere Observation) are described in order to obtain TEC's temporal variations with the aim of detecting such ionospheric disturbances. Moreover, the numerical results obtained after applying this method to real cases of tsunamis monitored by those satellites whose Ionospheric Pierce Points (IPPs) are closest to the tsunami source are presented. Lastly, based on these ionospheric perturbations reflected in the signals emitted by the satellites, a preliminary design is described for its potential integration into a Tsunami early Warning System (TWS) for the Iberian Peninsula.

Abstract:Vertical crustal movements associated with large earthquakes excite various kinds of atmospheric waves. They propagate upward and often disturb ionosphere. Here, I report a case for the 2024 January 1 M w 7.5 earthquake that occurred in the northern tip of the Noto Peninsula, Central Japan, using a dense network of multi-GNSS receivers. A rectangular-shaped positive anomaly of ionospheric total electron content emerged ∼9 min after the mainshock. The initial sharp peak was composed of two acoustic wave pulses excited at the two ends of the fault spanning ∼100 km. It was followed by a series of smaller-amplitude broad peaks, the largest of which was possibly excited by a slow fault rupture near the NE edge of the fault ∼8 min after the mainshock. These signatures become large where the wavefronts overlap with those of medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances, suggesting possible enhancement of the coseismic signals by downward displacements of high electron density regions in the ionosphere.

Abstract:The search for reliable earthquake precursors remains a critical task in seismology. This study investigates ionospheric disturbances as potential precursors to seismic events, focusing on the seismic activity preceding the 2021 Mw 6.0 Béjaïa Gulf earthquake in Algeria. Using space-based measurements to monitor the ionospheric layer, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of ionospheric behavior prior to the earthquake. Through in-depth data collection, processing, and analysis, we discerned distinct spatiotemporal patterns in ionospheric total electron content (TEC) variations, which are indicative of possible precursory seismic signals. By studying solar-terrestrial interactions, we examined their impact on ionospheric disturbances and seismic activity, improving earthquake precursor detection. Notable TEC anomalies, observed as early as five days before the earthquake, suggest a plausible correlation between ionospheric disturbances and impending seismic activity in Béjaïa. This study emphasizes the relationship between the ionosphere and seismic activity, highlighting the importance of GNSS-based ionospheric monitoring for enhancing earthquake preparedness and mitigation strategies. Integrating ionospheric observations into seismic hazard assessments shows promise for advancing early warning systems and enhancing our understanding of earthquake precursor phenomena.

Abstract:Recent developments in optical fiber cable technology allows the use of existing and future submarine telecommunication cables to provide seismic and sea-level information. In this work we study the impact of three different technologies, 1) SMART, Science Monitoring and Reliable Telecommunications; 2) DAS, Distributed Acoustic Sensing, and; 3) LI, Laser Interferometry, for effective earthquake and tsunami monitoring capabilities on the NE Atlantic. The SW Iberia is the source area of the largest destructive earthquake that struck Europe since the year 1000, the November 1, 1755 event. This earthquake generated also a destructive tsunami affecting the whole basin. This tectonically active area is crossed by the CAM (Continent-Azores-Madeira) submarine cable on a ring configuration. Due to the end of cable lifetime the current cables need to be replaced by 2024 and the technical requirements must be defined in mid-2021. The Azores archipelago is the focus of frequent seismic crizes and occasionally destructive earthquakes. A common feature of these seismic events is that they take place offshore, an area that is difficult to monitor from land-based instruments. In this work we evaluate the contribution of SMART cables to the earthquake monitoring and tsunami early warning system in SW Iberia and show how DAS and LI can improve earthquake monitoring on two active domains of the Azores. For tsunami early warning, we show how the offshore sea-level measurements provide clean offshore tsunami records when compared to coastal observations by tide gauges, which greatly improves the efficiency of the system. For earthquake monitoring, the data processing operational routine is examined using Monte-Carlo simulations. These take into consideration the errors in phase picking and the uncertainty on the 1D velocity model used for earthquake location. Quality of earthquake location is examined using the difference between the true location and the centroid of the computed epicenters and by the overall ellipse of uncertainty obtained from 100 runs. The added value provided by instrumented submarine telecommunication cables to mitigate earthquake and tsunami risk demonstrated in this work will help authorities and the society in general to take the political decisions required for its full implementation worldwide.

Abstract:The present paper implements new approaches introduced in regard to pre-earthquake geo-chemical activity that results in lithosphere-atmosphere-ionosphere coupling (LAIC). Specifically, stratospheric temperature anomaly as a result of precursory atmospheric gravity wave (AGW) activity in the stratosphere is studied. A new technique is developed based on the parameters a) daily average temperature ( T mean ), b) daily maximum temperature ( T max ), c) T mean averaged over altitude, d) T max averaged over altitude. The new approach is applied to six earthquakes of Iran as well as Tohoku earthquake. Detected Anomalies are analyzed and discussed. Possible new variations such as stratospheric cooling as a result of active geomagnetic conditions are determined. Geographical maps and spatial distribution of temperature anomalies are presented to comprehend the possible source of variation. Moreover, space-based ULF emission observed by an in-situ electric field detector (EFD) on board of China Seismic-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES) is presented as associated with 3 earthquakes that occurred in 2019. Detailed analysis of satellite overpass proximity to the earthquake epicenter, earthquake magnitude, and dates are examined and ULF anomalies associated with 3 magnetic field components are discussed. Finally, a systematic approach to be implemented using the new techniques in real time is proposed.

A Global Analysis of Pre-Earthquake Ionospheric Anomalies

Abstract:Local ionospheric density anomalies have been reported in the days prior to major earthquakes. This global study statistically investigates whether consistent ionospheric anomalies occur in the 24 hours prior to earthquakes across different regions, magnitudes, temporal and spatial scales. We match earthquake data to Total Electron Content (TEC) data from 2000-2020 at a higher resolution and cadence than previous assessed. Globally, no significant, consistent anomaly is found. Regionally, statistically significant ionospheric anomalies arise in the 12 hours prior to earthquakes with $p \leq 0.01$ following Wilcoxon tests. For the Japanese region we find a median negative ionospheric anomaly of around 0.5 TECU between 3 and 8 hours before earthquakes. For the South American region, the median TEC is enhanced by up to ~ 2 TECU, between 7 and 10 hours before an event. We show that the results are robust to different definitions of the ''local'' region and earthquake magnitude. This demonstrates the promise of monitoring the ionosphere as part of a multimodal earthquake forecasting system.
