Abstract:
This paper proposes a novel localization method of simultaneous two acoustic emission (AE) sources to decouple the two coupled AE waves in the structure and obtain more accurate localization results by means of frequency-domain notch-weighted beamforming. Firstly, the notch-wave theory is analyzed and combined with propagation characteristics of AE waves to derive the mechanism and method of the frequency-domain notch-weighted beamforming. After that, the localization process of the simultaneous two AE sources is proposed based on the presented frequency-domain notch-weighted beamforming method. Then, the simulation is performed to obtain the data of two AE sources emitted in different positions with different energies to study the localizing effect of the frequency-domain notch-weighted beamforming method. Finally, the proposed method is verified by pencil-lead-breaking (PLB) test on a steel plate. The research results show that the frequency-domain notch-weighted beamforming method can effectively localize the simultaneous two AE sources.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the problem of simultaneously locating two acoustic emission sources (Acoustic Emission, AE) in structural health monitoring. Specifically, when there are multiple damage points in a structure, these damage points will generate acoustic emission signals simultaneously. Due to the complex distance distribution between different acoustic emission sources and sensors, the time difference of the signals received by the sensors is chaotic, and the traditional method based on time difference of arrival (TDOA) cannot effectively locate multiple acoustic emission sources. In addition, the signals of multiple acoustic emission sources may interfere with each other during the propagation process, further increasing the difficulty of location.
To solve the above problems, this paper proposes a new method based on frequency - domain notch - weighted beamforming. This method can effectively separate and locate two simultaneously generated acoustic emission sources through frequency - domain notch - weighted beamforming technology, thereby improving the accuracy of location.
### Method overview
1. **Frequency - domain weighted beamforming**:
- First, through the frequency - domain weighted beamforming method, the received signals are converted to the frequency domain, and the direction information of the signals is extracted using beamforming technology.
- For a single acoustic emission source, the time - domain signal is converted to a frequency - domain signal through Fourier transform, and the steering vector is constructed according to the time delay of the signals received by the sensors.
2. **Frequency - domain notch - weighted beamforming**:
- When there are two acoustic emission sources, the received signals are a linear superposition of the two source signals.
- By first locating the acoustic emission source with stronger energy, its steering vector is extracted.
- A notch vector orthogonal to the known acoustic emission source steering vector is constructed to filter out the influence of the strong - energy source.
- The frequency - domain signal is re - weighted using the notch vector, thereby highlighting the position of the weak - energy source.
### Experimental verification
- **Simulation analysis**:
- Simulation was carried out through the finite element software Abaqus, simulating three pairs of acoustic emission sources with different positional relationships.
- The results show that the traditional beamforming method can only locate the acoustic emission source with stronger energy, while the frequency - domain notch - weighted beamforming method can effectively locate two acoustic emission sources.
- **Experimental verification**:
- A steel plate was used as the experimental object, and the Hsu - Nielsen acoustic emission source was generated through the pencil - lead - break (PLB) test.
- The experimental results show that the frequency - domain notch - weighted beamforming method can effectively locate two simultaneously generated acoustic emission sources. Although there is a certain location error, the error is within an acceptable range.
### Conclusion
The frequency - domain notch - weighted beamforming method proposed in this paper can effectively solve the problem of simultaneously locating two acoustic emission sources and improve the accuracy of multi - acoustic emission source location. This method has important application value in structural health monitoring.
