Abstract:The daytime and nighttime turbulence profiles within a weak‐wind forest canopy were investigated by using data collected within a temperate mixed conifer canopy in northern Idaho, USA. Turbulence measurements made at three heights on a single tower within a Douglas fir canopy were compared. Data were split between the daytime and nighttime to determine the relationships among the local temperature gradient, wind direction, wind speed, and turbulence levels. The total flow field distributions and vertical statistical profiles were determined for the overnight and daytime periods to observe how the overall flow changed with time of day. During the day, the wind probability distribution function was consistent between heights but depended on the canopy depth overnight. The skewness changed with the dominant wind direction. The kurtosis increased with depth into the canopy and from during the day to overnight. The range of wind speeds observed was higher under unstable conditions than stable conditions. Daytime turbulence had no dependence on wind direction. Overnight, the relationship between turbulence and wind speed changed with wind direction and canopy depth. The highest turbulence values were associated with downslope winds near the canopy top, but the wind direction for the highest turbulence was variable within the trunk space.

Abstract:In this study, a highly idealized model is developed to discuss the interplay of diurnal heating/cooling induced buoyancy and wind stress on thermally driven flow over a vegetated slope. Since the model is linear, the horizontal velocity can be broken into buoyancy-driven and surface wind-driven parts. Due to the presence of rooted vegetation, the circulation strength even under the surface wind condition is still significantly reduced, and the transient (adjustment) stage for the initial conditions is shorter than that without vegetation because of the reduced inertia. The flow in shallows is dominated by a viscosity/buoyancy balance as the case without wind, while the effect of wind stress is limited to the upper layer in deep water. In the lower layer of deep regions, vegetative drag is prevailing except the near bottom regions where viscosity dominates. Under the unidirectional wind condition, a critical dimensionless shear stress Γ _cri to stop the induced flow can be found and is a function of the horizontal location x . For the periodic wind condition, if the two forcing mechanisms work in concert ( θ =0 ), the circulation magnitude can be increased. For the case where buoyancy and wind shear stress act against each other ( θ =1/2 ), the circulation strength is reduced and its structure becomes more complex. However, the flow magnitudes near the bottom for θ =0 and θ =1/2 are comparable because surface wind almost has no influence.
Structure of Turbulence in Katabatic Flows Below and Above the Wind-Speed Maximum

Abstract:Measurements of small-scale turbulence made in the atmospheric boundary layer over complex terrain during the Mountain Terrain Atmospheric Modeling and Observations (MATERHORN) Program are used to describe the structure of turbulence in katabatic flows. Turbulent and mean meteorological data were continuously measured on four towers deployed along the east lower slope (2–4∘\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$^{\circ }$$\end{document}) of Granite Mountain near Salt Lake City in Utah, USA. The multi-level (up to seven) observations made during a 30-day long MATERHORN field campaign in September–October 2012 allowed the study of temporal and spatial structure of katabatic flows in detail, and herein we report turbulence statistics (e.g., fluxes, variances, spectra, and cospectra) and their variations in katabatic flow. Observed vertical profiles show steep gradients near the surface, but in the layer above the slope jet the vertical variability is smaller. It is found that the vertical (normal to the slope) momentum flux and horizontal (along-slope) heat flux in a slope-following coordinate system change their sign below and above the wind maximum of a katabatic flow. The momentum flux is directed downward (upward) whereas the along-slope heat flux is downslope (upslope) below (above) the wind maximum. This suggests that the position of the jet-speed maximum can be obtained by linear interpolation between positive and negative values of the momentum flux (or the along-slope heat flux) to derive the height where the flux becomes zero. It is shown that the standard deviations of all wind-speed components (and therefore of the turbulent kinetic energy) and the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy have a local minimum, whereas the standard deviation of air temperature has an absolute maximum at the height of wind-speed maximum. We report several cases when the destructive effect of vertical heat flux is completely cancelled by the generation of turbulence due to the along-slope heat flux. Turbulence above the wind-speed maximum is decoupled from the surface, and follows the classical local z\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$z$$\end{document}-less predictions for the stably stratified boundary layer.

Abstract:Understanding the influence of roughness and terrain slope on stable boundary layer turbulence is challenging. This is investigated using observations collected from October to November of 2018 during the Stable Atmospheric Variability ANd Transport (SAVANT) field campaign conducted in a shallow sloping Midwestern field. We analyze the turbulence velocity scale and its variation with the mean wind speed using observations up to 10–20 m on four meteorological towers located along a shallow gully. The roughness length for momentum over this complex terrain varied with wind direction from 0.0049 m to a maximum of 0.12 m for winds coming through deciduous trees present in the field. The variation of the turbulence velocity with wind speed shows a transition from a weak wind regime to a stronger wind regime, as reported by past studies. This transition is not observed for winds coming from the tree area, where turbulence is enhanced even for weak wind speeds. For weak stratification and stronger winds, the turbulent velocity scale increased with an increase in roughness while the terrain slope is seen to have a weak influence. The sizes of the dominant turbulent eddies seen from the vertical velocity power spectra are observed to be larger for winds coming through the tree area. The turbulence enhancement by the trees is found to be strong within a fetch distance of 7 times the tree height and not observable at 16 times of the tree height.

Abstract:Fast-response micrometeorological data obtained from an instrumented 32-m tower at an arid site near Ocotillo, Texas are used to examine the daily time evolution of the lower atmosphere. Correlation coefficients between turbulence properties (fast response wind-speed components and temperature) confirm that over this sparsely vegetated site the effects of convection are observed soon after sunrise, well ahead of the morning transition from stable to unstable stratification. Details of this kind are obscured when results are considered as functions of conventional stability parameters, since such standard analytical methods combine features of the morning and evening transitions into a single presentation. Partial correlation coefficients and semi-partials indicate that the local turbulent kinetic energy is mainly associated with local fluxes of heat and momentum near neutral and in most stable conditions, but decreases substantially during the times of strongest instability (possibly reflecting the scatter introduced by sampling infrequent convective episodes using a single tower). For many of the variables considered here, the standard deviations are about the same as the linear averages, indicating that the distributions are close to log-normal. The present data indicate that if the intent is to address some specific situation then ±\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$\pm $$\end{document}10 % error bounds on turbulence quantities (e.g. fluxes) correspond to averaging over a distance scale of the order of 10 km and a time scale of about 3 h. As the distance and time scales become smaller, the uncertainties due to factors external to the local surface increase.

Abstract:The inertia-gravity wave (IGW), Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (KHI) and turbulence in the lower free atmosphere are tightly linked through complex dynamical processes and their interactions profoundly shape the energy and mass transfer processes, but they remain largely unidentified. Here the near-global distributions of IGW energy, KHI (indicated by the critical value of Richardson number, Ri), and turbulence in the free atmosphere are investigated based on 5 years (2016–2020) of high-resolution radiosonde data. A poleward decrease can be detected in IGW energy density, as well as in the occurrence frequencies of KHI and turbulence. Their maxima occur at 15 km above ground level (AGL) at low latitudes but move to 5 km AGL at high latitudes, with notable latitudinal and seasonal variations. Over the contiguous United States, spatial distributions in KHI and turbulence frequencies agree well with moderate-or-greater turbulence frequency gathered from pilot reports. Vertically, the turbulence dissipation rate follows a log-normal distribution. Notably, a half of burst turbulence exists in the regime of Ri larger than 1 instead of 1/4, beyond or even far beyond what is known as the critical value of 1/4. Positive correlations have been extensively uncovered between IGW energy and KHI frequency, KHI and turbulence frequencies, wave energy dissipation and turbulence frequency, which indicate that IGW and KHI could be major drivers for the occurrence of turbulence in the free atmosphere. These findings could advance our understanding of the physical connection from medium-scale IGWs to small-scale turbulence and are theoretically valuable for aircraft safety.

Abstract:The turbulent structure within the marine atmospheric boundary layer is investigated based on four levels of observations at a fixed marine platform. During and before a cold front, the ocean surface is dominated by wind sea and swell waves, respectively, affording the opportunity to test the theory recently proposed in laboratory experiments or for flat land surfaces. The results reveal that the velocity spectra follow a k(-1) law within the intermediate wavenumber (k) range immediately below inertial subrange during the cold front. A logarithmic height dependence of the horizontal velocity variances is also observed above the height of 20 m, while the vertical velocity variances increase with increasing height following a power law of 2/3. These features confirm the attached eddy model and the "top-down model" of turbulence over the ocean surface. However, the behavior of velocity variances under swell conditions is much different from those during the cold front, although a remarkable k(-1) law can be observed in the velocity spectra. The quadrant analysis of the momentum flux also shows a significantly different result for the two conditions.
Nighttime Turbulent Events in A Steep Valley: A Nested Large-Eddy Simulation Study

Abstract:This numerical study investigates the nighttime flow dynamics in Owens Valley, California. Nested high-resolution large-eddy simulation (LES) is used to resolve stable boundary layer flows within the valley. On 17 April during the 2006 Terrain-Induced Rotor Experiment, the valley atmosphere experiences weak synoptic forcings and is largely dominated by buoyancy-driven downslope and down-valley flows. Tower instruments on the valley floor record a continuous decrease in temperature after sunset, except for a brief warming episode. This transient warming event is modeled with good magnitude and temporal precision with LES. Analysis of the LES flow field confirms the event to be the result of a slope to valley flow transition, as previously suggested by researchers based on field observations. On the same night, a northerly cold airflow from the Great Basin is channeled through a pass on the eastern valley sidewall. The current plunges into the stable valley atmosphere, overshooting the altitude of its neutral buoyancy, and generating a large-scale oscillatory motion. The resulting cross-valley flow creates strong vertical shear with the down-valley flow in the lower layers of the atmosphere. A portion of the cross-valley flow is captured by a scanning lidar. The nested LES is in good agreement with the lidar-recorded radial velocity. Furthermore, the LES is able to resolve Kelvin-Helmholtz waves, and ejection and sweep events at the two-layer interface, which lead to top-down vertical mixing.

Abstract:A climatology of the boundary‐layer wind‐turning angle over land is presented based on radiosonde observations from 800 stations in the Integrated Global Radiosonde Archive (IGRA). The dependence of the wind turning on a suite of parameters is analyzed. Results from previous studies indicating the importance of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) stratification for the angle of wind turning are confirmed here. A clear increase in the wind‐turning angle with wind speed, particularly for stratified conditions, is also evident. According to Rossby number similarity theory, the cross‐isobaric angle for a neutral and barotropic boundary layer decreases with the surface Rossby number, Ro. The IGRA observations indicate that this dependence on Ro might partly be linked to the dependence of the stratification on the wind speed, a dependence that seems to prevail even for the high wind speeds, a criteria that traditionally is used to approximate a neutral PBL. The vertical distribution of the turning of the wind is analyzed using the high resolution Stratospheric Processes And their Role in Climate (SPARC) data. For unstable cases, there is a maximum in the directional wind shear around the PBL top, whereas for the most stable class of cases there is a maximum near the surface. The wind‐turning angles from observations are also compared with values obtained from ERA‐Interim reanalysis fields, also presented over ocean. ERA‐Interim underestimates the magnitude of the wind‐turning angles as well as the range. Furtheremore, the midlatitude cross‐isobaric mass transport is estimated using the IGRA data. Abstract:The evolution of unforced and weakly damped two-dimensional turbulence over random rough topography presents two extreme states. If the initial kinetic energy [Formula: see text] is sufficiently high, then the topography is a weak perturbation, and evolution is determined by the spontaneous formation and mutual interaction of coherent axisymmetric vortices. High-energy vortices roam throughout the domain and mix the background potential vorticity (PV) to homogeneity, i.e., in the region between vortices, which is most of the domain, the relative vorticity largely cancels the topographic PV. If [Formula: see text] is low, then vortices still form but they soon become locked to topographic features: Anticyclones sit above topographic depressions and cyclones above elevated regions. In the low-energy case, with topographically locked vortices, the background PV retains some spatial variation. We develop a unified framework of topographic turbulence spanning these two extreme states of low and high energy. A main organizing concept is that PV homogenization demands a particular kinetic energy level [Formula: see text]. [Formula: see text] is the separator between high-energy evolution and low-energy evolution.

Abstract:Many people have a turbulence story: perhaps a specific memorable experience, or just an unpleasant flight where the seatbelt sign remained on for hours. While more rare, severe turbulence encounters can result in serious (even fatal) injuries and significant operational costs to airlines. While storms themselves are highly turbulent, they can also modify their environment in ways that lead to turbulence far from the storm. Using limited datasets, past studies indicate moderate or greater (MoG) turbulence can extend beyond current federal guidelines for avoidance (20 mi or 32 km), but many questions remain. For example, 1) What is the spatial distribution of turbulence relative to storms? and 2) What environmental factors influence the spatial distribution? Now, extensive archives of radar data and automated turbulence reports from commercial aircraft allow us to thoroughly investigate turbulence near storms. To this end, we compare turbulence reports to storm locations over 9 years (2009-2017) in the United States. We find that 32 km from 10-dBZ echoes at flight altitude, the risk of MoG turbulence is nearly 5 times the background occurrence, and that elevated risk extends beyond 100 km. At 2 km above echo tops, the risk of MoG turbulence exceeds 20 times the background risk. This decreases exponentially but remains elevated at all vertical separation distances. Risks increase with storm intensity. Finally, when we use ERA5 reanalysis to assess environmental factors, we find increased risk with stronger mean wind and wind shear, with slightly higher risk downstream and to the left of the wind/shear vector.

Seasonal Variability of the Daytime and Nighttime Atmospheric Turbulence Experienced by InSight on Mars

Abstract:The InSight mission, featuring continuous high-frequency high-sensitivity pressure measurements, is in ideal position to study the active atmospheric turbulence of Mars. Data acquired during 1.25 Martian year allows us to study the seasonal evolution of turbulence and its diurnal cycle. We investigate vortices (abrupt pressure drops), local turbulence (frequency range 0.01-2 Hz) and non-local turbulence often caused by convection cells and plumes (frequency range 0.002-0.01 Hz). Contrary to non-local turbulence, local turbulence is strongly sensitive at all local times and seasons to the ambient wind. We report many remarkable events with the arrival of northern autumn at the InSight landing site: a spectacular burst of daytime vortices, the appearance of nighttime vortices, and the development of nighttime local turbulence as intense as its daytime counterpart. Nighttime turbulence at this dusty season appears as a result of the combination of a stronger low-level jet, producing shear-driven turbulence, and a weaker stability.

Effects of Persistent Wind Speeds on Turbulent Fluxes in the Water-Atmosphere Interface

Abstract:Understanding air-water interactions is critical to establishing the role of inland water bodies in regulating local and regional weather so that more accurate parameterizations of flux exchange in numerical weather models can be achieved. Wind-induced mixing actively alters environmental variables, leading to changes in turbulent exchanges of latent heat (LE) and sensible heat (H) fluxes above water surfaces. It remains extensively unexplored as to how winds in different wind speed ranges modulate coupling of different variables, which in turn regulates LE and H. Here, we analyze 28-month eddy covariance data collected over a large reservoir. We categorize the dataset into four wind classes with different wind speed ranges: I (< 2.32 m s−1), II (2.32–3.69 m s−1), III (3.69–5.13 m s−1), and IV (> 5.13 m s−1). The enhanced mechanical mixing promotes LE and H with the increased wind classes due to the increased sensitivity to Δe and ΔT despite the reduced role of atmospheric stability. Hence, the highest LE and H occur in IV, under moderately unstable and stable conditions. Overall, the bulk transfer coefficients behave similarly under a certain stability condition across all wind classes while the similarity theory systematically underestimates their magnitudes. These results have important applications in improving parameterization schemes to estimate fluxes over water surfaces in numerical models.
Mechanisms for Wind Direction Changes in the Very Stable Boundary Layer

Abstract:Large, rapid, and intermittent changes in wind direction were commonly observed in low–wind speed conditions in the very stable boundary layer during the phase 2 of the Project Sagebrush field tracer study. This paper investigates the occurrence and magnitude of these wind direction changes in the very stable boundary layer and explores their associated meteorological factors. The evidence indicates that these wind direction changes occur mainly at wind speeds of less than 1.5 m s−1 and are associated with momentum and sensible heat fluxes approaching zero in low–wind shear conditions. This results in complete vertical decoupling. They are only weakly dependent on the magnitude of turbulence. The magnitude of the wind direction changes is generally greatest near the surface, because of the greater prevalence of low wind speeds there, and decreases upward.

Abstract:We present the results of monitoring the speed of optical turbulent layers in the atmosphere above San Pedro Mártir, Mexico, during 15 nights in 2000 May. The data were obtained using the generalized scintillation detection and ranging technique (generalized SCIDAR), developed at Nice University. This paper constitutes the second in a series. The first paper presents results concerning measurements of optical turbulence strength obtained at the same site and time. The principal results of the present article are as follows: (1) The wind profiles remain stable during each night. (2) No correlation between the turbulence intensity C2N and the speed of the turbulent layers, V, is detected for speeds lower than ∼45 m s−1. Above that speed, which was only exceeded in the jet‐stream layer on one night, the optical turbulence strength is seen to increase. (3) Layers in the first 4 km and higher than 16 km above sea level are similarly slow, with median speeds of 8.6 and 9.6 m s−1, respectively. (4) Between 9 and 16 km, where the jet stream flows on some of the nights, the median wind speed is 26.0 m s−1. (5) From simultaneous measurements of C2N(h) and V(h), we compute the temporal coherence of the turbulence, layer by layer, in 500 m thick layers. This is the first time that such data have been published. For a multiconjugate adaptive optics system, our measurements show that the temporal responses of three deformable mirrors conjugated on the ground and at 6 km and 13 km above sea level, each one correcting for the turbulence in 500 m thick layers, would need to be 64, 40, and 20 ms. (6) The vertical variation of V dominates the vertical variation of the coherence time. (7) For the first time, we compare wind velocity profiles obtained from three different sources: generalized SCIDAR, NCEP/NCAR (National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research) reanalysis data, and meteorological research balloons. The comparison shows excellent agreement in both the modulus and the direction of the wind velocity.

Regarding the Spontaneous Mechanism of Atmospheric Whirlwind Generation in Narrow Mountain Canyons

Abstract:In a narrow, rather deep mountain canyons, under certain conditions, an irregular thermal mechanism can be activated, leading to the spontaneous convective movement of the air mass. This effect differs from the well-known phenomenon caused by the diurnal variation of the solar heat flux in large, broad valleys, where the regular diurnal variation in the direction of onshore winds is systematically suppressed. A specific hydrodynamic picture corresponds to spontaneous convection. In particular, there is a change of direction (inversion) in the vertical profile of the horizontal movement of air along the slope of the canyon at a certain height. At that time, Ludwig Prandtl developed the theoretical model through which it is possible to analytically determine the level of velocity inversion compared to the base of the valley. At this height, due to the instability of the velocity profile, the formation of atmospheric vortexes of a certain size is likely. It is natural that the dissolution (dissipation) of such vortexes will affect the temperature field.Therefore, the breakup of whirlwinds is related to the violation of thermodynamic equilibrium, meaning that there will be an impulsive change in the meteorological regime in the local area due to the spontaneous turbulence of air masses in the areas of velocity inversion. The characteristic time of this event will depend on the duration of the temperature field disturbance. It is likely that such a location will become a dangerous opportunity for hang gliding or paragliding enthusiasts. It should be noted that this type of sport has become an important component of tourism in Georgia, particularly in the mountainous regions of the country. Therefore, there is a need to focus on ensuring the safe flight conditions of individual aircraft in narrow valleys. Their formation, among other measures, requires an assessment of the probability of the operation of a thermal mechanism causing stochastic atmospheric disturbances in narrow canyons. This task can be carried out only as a result of a special investigation, based on the monitoring of seasonal and short-term hourly indicators of the mentioned physical event in a specially selected canyon, which can be considered typical for the mountainous regions of Georgia.
Turbulence Structures in the Very Stable Boundary Layer under the Influence of Wind Profile Distortion

Abstract:In very stable boundary layers (VSBL), a "cocktail" of submeso motions routinely result in elevated mean wind speed maxima above the ground, acting as a new source of turbulence generation. This new source of turbulent kinetic energy enhances turbulent mixing and causes mean wind profile distortion (WPD). As a results, this transient distortion in the wind profile adjusts the classical log-law. Addressing how WPD-induced turbulence regulates flow structures, turbulent fluxes, and transitions in stability regimes across layers remains a challenge. Eddy covariance data measured at four levels on a 62-m tower are employed to address these questions. It is shown that the WPD initiates large turbulent eddies that penetrate downward, leading to enhanced vertical mixing and comparable turbulent transport efficiencies across layers. As a consequence, turbulence intensity and fluxes are increased. As the WPD is intensified, turbulent fluxes and turbulent flux transport caused by large eddies are also enhanced, leading to a transition from very stable to weakly stable regimes. Due to the influence of WPD-induced large eddies, the large-eddy turbulent Prandtl number does not deviate appreciably from unity and the partitioning between turbulent kinetic and potential energies is linearly related to the gradient Richardson number.
Effects of Low-Level Jets on Near-Surface Turbulence and Wind Direction Changes in the Nocturnal Boundary Layer

Abstract:In this study we examined a data set of nearly two-year collection and investigated the effects of low-level jets (LLJ) on near-surface turbulence, especially wind direction changes, in the nocturnal boundary layer. Typically, nocturnal boundary layer is thermally stratified and stable. When wind profiles exhibit low gradient (in the absence of LLJ), it is characterized by very weak turbulence and very large, abrupt, but intermittent wind direction changes ( increment WD) in the layers near the surface. In contrast, presence of LLJs can cause dramatic changes through inducing wind velocity shears, enhancing vertical mixing, and weakening the thermal stratification underneath. Ultimately, bulk Richardson number (R-b) is reduced and weakly stable conditions prevail, leading to active turbulence, close coupling across the layers between the LLJ height and ground surface, relatively large vertical momentum and sensible heat fluxes, and suppressed increment WD values. R-b can be a useful parameter in assessing turbulence strength and increment WD as well. The dependence of increment WD on R-b appears to be well defined under weakly stable conditions (0.0 R-b = 0.25) and increment WD is generally confined to small values. However, the relationship between ?WD and R-b breaks when R-b increases, especially R-b > 1.0 (very stable conditions), under which ?WD varies across a very wide range and the potential for large ?WD increases greatly. Our findings have provided important implications to the plume dispersion in the nocturnal boundary layers.

Abstract:Observational data from Beijing 325 m meteorological tower are used to investigate the turbulence characteristics in the urban surface layer.The turbulent variances at three levels of 47 m,140 m and 280 m heights are analyzed in the frame of the local similarity theory.The results show that the variances of wind velocity and temperature can be quite well described by the local similarity theory.However,the comparison shows that the turbulence characteristics at 140 m and 280 m heights are close to each other,while the turbulence characteristics at 47 m height are different from them.These results indicate that,since the turbulence properties in the roughness sublayer are strongly influenced by the dynamical and thermal heterogeneity of urban canopy,they are different to those in the inertial sublayer.And the turbulence statistics in the roughness sublayer and the inertial sublayer should be described by the different schemes.
Wind-Tunnel Simulation of Approximately Horizontally Homogeneous Stable Atmospheric Boundary Layers

Abstract:Abstract Two cases of an overlying inversion imposed on a stable boundary layer are investigated, extending the work of Hancock and Hayden (Boundary-Layer Meteorol 168:29–57, 2018; 175:93–112, 2020). Vertical profiles of Reynolds stresses and heat flux show closely horizontally homogeneous behaviour over a streamwise fetch of more than eight boundary-layer heights. However, profiles of mean temperature and velocity show closely horizontally homogeneous behaviour only in the top two-thirds of the boundary layer. In the lower one-third the temperature decreases with fetch, directly as a consequence of heat transfer to the surface. A weaker effect is seen in the mean velocity profiles, curiously, such that the gradient Richardson number is invariant with fetch, while various other quantities are not. Stability leads to a ‘blocking’ of vertical influence. Inferred aerodynamic and thermal roughness lengths increase with fetch, while the former is constant in the neutral case, as expected. Favourable validation comparisons are made against two sets of local-scaling systems over the full depth of the boundary layer. Close concurrence is seen for all stable cases for z / L < 0.2, where z and L are the vertical height and local Obukhov length, respectively, and over most of the layer for some quantities.
