Abstract:The carbon isotope fractionation in algal organic matter (ε p ), including the long-chain alkenones produced by the coccolithophorid family Noelaerhabdaceae, is used to reconstruct past atmospheric CO 2 levels. The conventional proxy linearly relates ε p to changes in cellular carbon demand relative to diffusive CO 2 supply, with larger ε p values occurring at lower carbon demand relative to supply ( i . e . abundant CO 2 ). However, the response of Gephyrocapsa oceanica , one of the dominant alkenone producers of the last few million years, has not been studied closely. Here we subject G. oceanica to various CO 2 levels by increasing pCO 2 in the culture headspace, as opposed to increasing dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and alkalinity concentrations at constant pH. We note no substantial change in physiology, but observe an increase in ε p as carbon demand relative to supply decreases, consistent with DIC manipulations. We compile existing Noelaerhabdaceae ε p data and show that the diffusive model poorly describes the data. A meta-analysis of individual treatments (unique combinations of lab, strain, and light conditions) shows that the slope of the ε p response depends on the light conditions and range of carbon demand relative to CO 2 supply in the treatment, which is incompatible with the diffusive model. We model ε p as a multilinear function of key physiological and environmental variables and find that both photoperiod duration and light intensity are critical parameters, in addition to CO 2 and cell size. While alkenone carbon isotope ratios indeed record CO 2 information, irradiance and other factors are also necessary to properly describe alkenone ε p . This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Abstract. One of the great challenges in biogeochemical research over the past half a century has been to quantify and understand the mechanisms underlying stable carbon isotope fractionation (εp) in phytoplankton in response to changing CO2 concentrations. This interest is partly grounded in the use of fossil photosynthetic organism remains as a proxy for past atmospheric CO2 levels. Phytoplankton organic carbon is depleted in 13C compared to its source because of kinetic fractionation by the enzyme RubisCO during photosynthetic carbon fixation, as well as through physiological pathways upstream of RubisCO. Moreover, other factors such as nutrient limitation, variations in light regime as well as phytoplankton culturing systems and inorganic carbon manipulation approaches may confound the influence of aquatic CO2 concentrations [CO2] on εp. Here, based on experimental data compiled from the literature, we assess which underlying physiological processes cause the observed differences in εp for various phytoplankton groups in response to C-demand/C-supply, i.e., particulate organic carbon (POC) production / [CO2]) and test potential confounding factors. Culturing approaches and methods of carbonate chemistry manipulation were found to best explain the differences in εp between studies, although day length was an important predictor for εp in haptophytes. Extrapolating results from culturing experiments to natural environments and for proxy applications therefore require caution, and it should be carefully considered whether culture methods and experimental conditions are representative of natural environments.

Abstract:The carbon isotopic composition of organic matter preserved in marine sediments provides a window into the global carbon cycle through geologic time, including variations in atmospheric CO2 levels. Traditional models for interpreting isotope records of marine phytoplankton assume that these archives primarily reflect kinetic isotope discrimination by the carbon-fixing enzyme RubisCO. However, some in vivo and in vitro measurements appear to contradict this assumption, indicating that significant questions remain about the mechanistic underpinning of algal isotopic signatures, including the role of carbon concentrating mechanisms (CCMs). Here, we present a general model to explain photosynthetic carbon isotope fractionation (εP) in marine red-lineage phytoplankton groups; the model reproduces existing chemostat and batch culture datasets with a normalized root mean squared error (nRMSE) of 6.8%. Our framework proposes that a nutrient- and light-dependent step upstream of RubisCO is a kinetic barrier to carbon acquisition and therefore represents a significant source of isotopic fractionation. We suggest this step represents a carbon concentrating strategy that becomes favorable to cells under conditions of excess photon flux. The primary implications are that RubisCO is predicted to exert minimal isotopic control in photon-rich, nutrient-limited regimes but becomes influential as growth becomes light-limited. This framework enables both environment-specific and taxon-specific isotopic predictions. By refining the mechanistic understanding of marine photosynthetic carbon isotope fractionation, we may begin to reconcile existing datasets and reexamine Phanerozoic isotope records—including the resulting CO2 reconstructions—by emphasizing the influence of different types of resource limitation on photosynthetic carbon acquisition.

Abstract:Oxidative weathering of organic carbon in sedimentary rocks is a major source of CO2 to the atmosphere over geological timescales, but the size of this emission pathway in Earth's past has not been directly quantified due to a lack of available proxy approaches. We have measured the rhenium isotope composition of organic‐rich rocks sampled from unweathered drill cores and weathered outcrops in south Texas, whose stratigraphic successions can be tightly correlated. Oxidative weathering of more than 90% of the organic carbon and ∼85% of the rhenium is accompanied by a shift to lower rhenium isotope compositions in the weathered outcrops. The calculated isotope composition of rhenium weathered from the initial bedrock for individual samples varies systematically by ∼0.7‰ with different fractions of rhenium loss. This variation can be empirically modeled with isotope fractionation factors of α = 1.0002–1.0008. Our results indicate that the isotope composition of rhenium delivered to the oceans can be altered by weathering intensity of rock organic matter and that the rhenium isotope composition of seawater is sensitive to past oxidative weathering and associated CO2 emissions.

Abstract:Estimates of past p CO 2 prior to ice‐core records have often been sought by measuring carbon isotopic fractionation during photosynthesis (Ɛ p ) in alkenone‐producing algae present in the fossil record. Photic zone and core‐top Ɛ p show strong latitudinal gradients, which have been interpreted as an effect of growth rate. The factor b, used in previous studies to account for the changes in growth rate, shows high dependence on [CO 2 ] aq in culture experiments, making difficult the deconvolution of nutrients vs other effects in the field. We combine coccolithophore growth rate output from a global model, limited by sea surface temperature (SST) and [PO 4 3‐ ] with a statistical model that include [CO 2 ] aq , cell size and light to predict Ɛ p , and examine the influence of different environmental and physiological variables on the observed expression of Ɛ p in field samples. Back‐calculations of the growth rate necessary to match the observed Ɛ p in photic zone and core‐top samples using the statistical model show high correlation with modeled growth rates using [PO 4 3‐ ] and SST in temperate regions. For Southern Ocean and tropical upwelling regions, with colder and warmer SST, respectively, there might be additional factors controlling growth rate not accounted for in the model, such as grazing or nutrient recycling. We evaluate the potential to reconstruct past growth rates using planktonic foraminifera‐ and coccolithophore‐based proxies related to water column structure. We found best application of these proxies as potential indicators of past [PO 4 3‐ ], which can subsequently be used in combination with proxy temperature, to estimate past coccolithophore growth rates. Abstract:The stratigraphic utility of carbon-isotope values from terrestrial organic matter is explored for Miocene siliciclastic sediments of the shallow shelf, New Jersey margin, USA (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program [IODP] Expedition 313). These shallow marine strata, rich in terrestrial organic matter, provide a record of deposition equivalent to the Monterey event, a prolonged interval of time characterized by relatively positive carbon-isotope values recorded from foraminiferal carbonate in numerous oceanic settings. Coherent stratigraphic trends and short-term isotopic excursions are observed consistently in palynological preparation residues, concentrated woody phytoclasts, and individually picked woody phytoclasts obtained from the New Jersey sediments. A bulk organic matter curve shows somewhat different stratigraphic trends but, when corrected for mixing of marine-terrestrial components on the basis of measured C/N ratios, a high degree of conformity with the woody phytoclast record is observed. However, assuming that the correlations based on strontium-isotope values and biostratigraphy are correct, the carbon-isotope record from the New Jersey margin contrasts with that previously documented from oceanic settings (i.e., lack of positive excursion of carbon-isotope values in terrestrial organic matter through the Langhian Stage). Factors that may potentially bias local terrestrial carbon-isotope records include reworking from older deposits, degradation and diagenesis, as well as environmental factors affecting vegetation in the sediment source areas. These possible factors are assessed on the basis of pyrolysis data, scanning electron microscope observations, and comparison to palynological indices of environmental change. Some evidence is found for localized degradation and/or reworking of older woody phytoclasts, but where such processes have occurred they do not readily explain the observed carbon-isotope values. It is concluded that the overall carbon-isotope signature for the exchangeable carbon reservoir is distorted, to the extent that the Monterey event excursion is not easily identifiable. The most likely explanation is that phytoclast reworking has indeed occurred in clinoform toe-of-slope facies, but the reason for the resulting relatively heavy carbon-isotope values in the Burdigalian remains obscure.

Abstract:The impact of environmental factors on nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O) isotope effects during algal nitrate assimilation causes uncertainty in the field application of sedimentary N isotope records and nitrate isotopes to understand the marine nitrogen cycle. Ocean acidification is predicted to change nitrogen cycling including nitrate assimilation, but how N and O isotope effects during algal nitrate assimilation vary in response to changes in seawater pH and partial pressure CO2 (pCO2) remains unknown. We measured N and O isotope effects during nitrate assimilation and physiological states of the marine diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii and Synechococcus under different pH (8.1 or 7.8) and pCO2 (400 or 800 μatm) conditions. Low pH and/or high pCO2 equally decreased N and O isotope effects during nitrate assimilation by diatoms possibly due to reducing cellular nitrate efflux/uptake ratio and decreased isotope effects for nitrate uptake, whereas they did not affect those by Synechococcus with low intracellular nitrate concentration and limited nitrate efflux. Our results provide compelling experimental evidence showing different changes in N and O isotope effects during nitrate assimilation by marine eukaryotic and prokaryotic phytoplankton at low pH and/or high pCO2. These findings suggest new insight into environmental controls on variability in the isotope effect during algal nitrate assimilation, and have implications for improving a predictive understanding of N and O isotope tools in acidified oceans.

Reconstructing paleoceanographic conditions during the middle Ediacaran: Evidence from giant ooids in South China

Abstract:The Ediacaran was a period of intense environmental change in Earth history. Transient pulses of oxygenation and shifts in ocean chemistry have been interpreted from a range of geochemical proxies, including rare earth elements and yttrium (REY), but it is still a challenge to the reconstruction of paleoceanographic conditions due to the scarcity of the reliable recorder. In this study, we explore the possibility that a newly-discovered deposit of giant ooids in the Nanshanping outcrop in South China contains a relatively intact record of the REE composition of Ediacaran seawater, providing an important window into the redox state of the surface ocean at this time. These ooids are relatively large in size (∼1-6 mm), and exhibit densely banded laminae. A regional chemostratigraphic correlation shows that the giant-ooid-bearing succession in South China is in the upper part of the second Ediacaran positive carbon isotopic shift (EP2), and thus its occurrence was not associated with the Shuram Excursion. Additionally, the occurrences of giant-ooid-bearing oolites in different blocks were not synchronous during the middle Ediacaran. In-situ laser ablation analysis of giant-ooid cortices reveals that the shale-normalized REY patterns are similar to those of modern seawater, including depleted light REEs, superchondritic Y/Ho ratios, and positive La anomalies. Yet, no Ce anomalies (1.0±0.15) in numerous ooid cortices seems to indicate a suboxidized condition of surface ocean in South China at that time. The petrographic and geochemical evidences support the weak diagenetic alteration of the pure giant ooids during burial. They formed in open-ocean settings with energetic hydrodynamic environments and were affected by early dolomitization that might preserve mostly original petrographic fabrics and REY signatures from further diagenetic overprinting. The characteristics of Ce anomalies and REY compositions acquired from the giant ooids indicate that the surface ocean was suboxidized in South China during the late stage of EP2, implying the very low atmospheric O2 level at that time. Our results suggest that giant ooids may be a reliable analytical target that provide a snapshot into palaeoceanographic conditions during this crucial period of dynamic changes in early Earth history.

Abstract:Abstract The ocean is hypothesized to have been anoxic throughout the Marinoan “Snowball Earth” event, from ca. 649 to 635 Ma, with potentially catastrophic implications for the survival of eukaryotic life. However, the precise nature of ocean redox chemistry across this critical interval, and hence the factors that governed the persistence of eukaryotes, remains unknown. We report records of pyrite iron and sulfur isotopes, combined with Fe speciation, for glaciogenic diamictites from the Nantuo Formation of South China. These data provide constraints on seawater redox state across the Marinoan glaciation, and they reveal that the redox state of the ocean fluctuated in concert with waxing and waning extents of glaciation, to include intervals of expanded oxygenation. The input of meltwater-derived oxygen provides a potential explanation for the persistence of eukaryotes through the Cryogenian “Snowball Earth” events, which ultimately paved the way for subsequent intervals of rapid biological innovation.

Abstract:Brachiopod shells are ubiquitous since the Early Cambrian up to now. As they secrete a shell made of low-magnesium calcite, more resistant to diagenesis than biocarbonates richer in Mg, their geochemical signatures are generally considered a powerful tool for paleo-environmental and paleo-climatic reconstructions. However, gaps in knowledge still remain on the underlying controls of the shell chemistry, in particular at a high spatial resolution. In this study, in situ oxygen and carbon isotope measurements by SIMS (Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) were performed in brachiopod shells of the cold-temperate water species Magellania venosa, constituted of a primary and a secondary layer. The individual specimens studied here grew under controlled conditions mimicking the natural environment and in experiments under low-pH (high p CO 2 ) and high-temperature conditions. Transversal carbon and oxygen profiles showed a "brachiopod pattern" typical of extant two-layered brachiopods, with the primary layer depleted in 18 O and 13 C relative to equilibrium and the secondary layer showing a gradual increasing trend until reaching a near-equilibrium plateau. Overall, shells cultured at low pH were found to have δ 18 O and δ 13 C values closer to equilibrium when compared to shells from the control experiment. These near-equilibrium values may reflect a decrease in shell precipitation rate, leading to less kinetic effects, and/or a more rapid kinetics for the equilibration between DIC species and water. By close pairing of seawater δ 18 O and δ 13 C to that of shell microstructure, our study enables us to derive layer-specific C and O enrichment factors, which show the extent of pH and temperature effects superimposed on the seawater δ 18 O and DIC δ 13 C signal inherited. Finally, we show that during brachiopod shell growth, newly precipitated calcite is added to the calcite already existing, thus empirically validating the conceptual accretionary growth model proposed by Ackerly (1989) .

Abstract:The δ18O of carbonate minerals that formed at Earth’s surface is widely used to investigate paleoclimates and paleo-elevations. However, a multitude of hydrologic processes can affect δ18O values, including mixing, evaporation, distillation of parent waters, and carbonate growth temperatures. We combined traditional carbon and oxygen isotope analyses with clumped (Δ47) and triple oxygen isotopes (Δ′17O) analyses in oyster shells (Acutostrea idriaensis) of the Goler Formation in southern California (USA) to obtain insights into surface temperatures and δ18O values of meteoric waters during the early Eocene hothouse climate. The Δ47-derived temperatures ranged from 9 °C to 20 °C. We found a correlation between the δ18O of growth water (δ18Ogw) (calculated using Δ47 temperatures and δ18O of carbonate) and the δ13C values of shells. The Δ′17O values of shell growth waters (0.006‰–0.013‰ relative to Vienna standard mean ocean water–standard light Antarctic precipitation [VSMOW-SLAP]) calculated from Δ′17O of carbonate (–0.087‰ to –0.078‰ VSMOW-SLAP) were lower than typical meteoric waters. These isotopic compositions are consistent with oyster habitation in an estuary. We present a new triple oxygen isotope mixing model to estimate the δ18O value of freshwater supplying the estuary (δ18Ofw). The reconstructed δ18Ofw of –11.3‰ to –14.7‰ (VSMOW) is significantly lower than the δ18Ogw of –4.4‰ to –9.9‰ that would have been calculated using “only” Δ47 and δ18O values of carbonate. This δ18Ofw estimate supports paleogeographic reconstructions of a Paleogene river fed by high-elevation catchments of the paleo–southern Sierra Nevada. Our study highlights the potential for paired Δ47 and Δ′17O analyses to improve reconstructions of meteoric water δ18O, with implications for understanding ancient climates and elevations.

Abstract:The composition and preservation state of biogenic carbonate archives, such as foraminiferal tests, record ocean chemistry during the lifetime of the organism and post‐depositional changes in ambient conditions via carbonate compensation. Depending upon the specific paleoclimate proxy, post‐depositional processes, including dissolution, may alter original paleoenvironmental signals captured by the foraminifer's test composition. Accordingly, quantifying dissolution independent of geochemical measurements can improve proxy interpretation. Developing independent tools may also be useful for investigating whether changes in paleoclimatic conditions are associated with changes in seawater carbonate chemistry. Such approaches can be improved further if they are applied to individual foraminiferal tests, as specimen‐to‐specimen differences can record higher‐frequency environmental changes compared to conventional bulk‐scale analyses. Here, we combine individual foraminiferal carbon and oxygen isotopic analyses (IFA) with X‐ray MicroCT Scanning to generate paired analyses of test density (a proxy for the extent of post‐depositional dissolution) and isotopic composition. As a proof‐of‐concept application of this approach, we analyze Globigerina bulloides tests from both coretop and latest Miocene/earliest Pliocene‐aged sediment from Ocean Drilling Project (ODP) Site 1088 (Agulhas Ridge). Our measurements and mixing model calculations show that within‐population differences in carbon and oxygen isotopic ratios are largely independent of dissolution extent. By comparing population averages from coretop and downcore sediments, we find that lower oxygen isotopic ratios (likely driven by higher calcification temperatures) are associated with greater extents of dissolution at ODP Site 1088. We interpret this finding to reflect coupled changes in carbonate chemistry and climatic conditions over million‐year timescales.

Abstract:In this contribution, we explore the idea that the Ca isotope proxy has utility as an indicator of carbonate authigenesis (i.e., post-depositional precipitation of CaCO3 within the sedimentary package). Given the strong contrast in isotopic fractionation factor between the formational and diagenetic environments, Ca isotopes have the potential to fingerprint carbonate authigenesis when it occurs close to the seawater-sediment interface. We demonstrate that Ca isotopes are particularly applicable to exploring ocean acidification events, and potentially ocean anoxic events, and focus our attention on ocean acidification related to the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). We present three scenarios that vary in magnitude and duration of carbon fluxes simulated using an Earth System model of intermediate complexity (cGENIE) and use the cGENIE output to constrain the upper boundary conditions of 1-D reactive transport models of authigenesis and recrystallization in the sedimentary section. Along with simple mixing calculations, the models inform our exploration of the hypothesis that authigenic carbonate induced by a saturation state overshoot during the PETM explains recently published Ca isotope records, and perhaps bulk carbonate records over Ocean Anoxic Event (OAE) 2. Our simulations suggest that fractionation factor variability does not explain the PETM δ44Ca records, and we propose a δ44Ca-CaCO3 space framework to assist with the elucidation of authigenic additions over time scales that are short relative to the residence time of Ca in the ocean (~1 Ma). Ultimately, we find that the 'authigenic zone' generated in the sedimentary column may be influenced by alkalinity overshoots or redox state; the CaCO3 produced in this zone can overprint temporal signals with depth-dependent signals that reflect lithology and sedimentation rate and need not be spatially uniform, even when driven by a global event. Ultimately, we demonstrate the utility of Ca isotopes for exploring short time scale climatic events and a quantitative framework to guide interpretations.

Oxygenation Variations in the Atmosphere and Shallow Seawaters of the Yangtze Platform During the Ediacaran Period: Clues from Cr-isotope and Ce-anomaly in Carbonates

Abstract:The late Neoproterozoic Era witnessed a significant oxygenation in Earth's surface in line with the naissance and diversity of early animals; however, detailed variations of the oxygenation during this period remain controversial. Chromium-isotope in ancient carbonates has shown its ability to trace the oxygenation history of the atmosphere-hydrosphere system. In this study, we analyzed Cr-isotope and Ce-anomaly data of carbonates from the Ediacaran Doushantuo and Dengying formations in the Yangtze Gorges area, South China, in order to reconstruct oxygenation variations in the atmosphere and shallow seawaters of the Yangtze Platform during the Ediacaran Period. After evaluating and excluding detrital and diagenetic effects, well-preserved delta Cr-53(auth) signatures were obtained. Post-Marinoan carbonates record slightly positive delta Cr-53(auth) values (0.18-0.43 parts per thousand) and slightly negative Ce-anomaly, suggesting generally oxidizing conditions in the atmosphere (with pO(2) over 1% PAL) and in shallow seawaters of the Yangtze Platform during the post-Marinoan phase, which may have been related to the diversity of early Ediacaran organisms. Shuram/Wonoka correlative carbonates are characterized by the fluctuations of delta Cr-53(auth) values (-0.25 to 0.97 parts per thousand) and a significant negative delta C-13 excursion, which may have resulted from partial oxidation of the large deep-water DOC reservoir under enhanced oxidative weathering conditions. This process released C-13-depleted carbon into DIC pool and isotopically unfractionated Cr (III) into water columns, the latter of which immediately precipitated by adsorption onto the detrital materials. Meanwhile, an increase in local anoxia (and even euxinia) in the intrashelf basin of the Yangtze Platform driven by enhanced microbial sulfate reduction and the resultant H2S, possibly limited regional biological evolution during this phase. Late Ediacaran carbonates record elevated delta Cr-53(auth) values (0.40-0.96 parts per thousand) together with the decreasing trend in Ce/Ce* values, indicating a more oxygenated environment in the atmosphere and shallow seawaters of the Yangtze Platform during the late Ediacaran phase, which may have been beneficial to the diversification of late Ediacaran animals.

Abstract:Abstract The Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO, 14–17 Ma) was ~3–4 °C warmer than present, similar to estimates for 2100. Coincident with the MCO is the Monterey positive carbon isotope (δ 13 C) excursion, with oceans more depleted in 12 C relative to 13 C than any time in the past 50 Myrs. The long-standing Monterey Hypothesis uses this excursion to invoke massive marine organic carbon burial and draw-down of atmospheric CO 2 as a cause for the subsequent Miocene Climate Transition and Antarctic glaciation. However, this hypothesis cannot explain the multi-Myr lag between the δ 13 C excursion and global cooling. We use planktic foraminiferal B/Ca, δ 11 B, δ 13 C, and Mg/Ca to reconstruct surface ocean carbonate chemistry and temperature. We propose that the MCO was associated with elevated oceanic dissolved inorganic carbon caused by volcanic degassing, global warming, and sea-level rise. A key negative feedback of this warm climate was the organic carbon burial on drowned continental shelves.

Abstract:Anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria utilize ancient metabolic pathways to link sulfur and iron metabolism to the reduction of CO2 . In meromictic Lake Cadagno, Switzerland, both purple sulfur (PSB) and green sulfur anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria (GSB) dominate the chemocline community and drive the sulfur cycle. PSB and GSB fix carbon utilizing different enzymatic pathways and these fractionate C-isotopes to different extents. Here, these differences in C-isotope fractionation are used to constrain the relative input of various anoxygenic phototrophs to the bulk community C-isotope signal in the chemocline. We sought to determine whether a distinct isotopic signature of GSB and PSB in the chemocline persists in the settling fraction and in the sediment. To answer these questions, we also sought investigated C-isotope fractionation in the water column, settling material, and sediment of Lake Cadagno, compared these values to C-isotope fractionation of isolated anoxygenic phototroph cultures, and took a mass balance approach to investigate relative contributions to the bulk fractionation signature. We found a large C-isotope fractionation between dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) in the Lake Cadagno chemocline. This large fractionation between the DIC and POC was also found in culture experiments carried out with anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria isolated from the lake. In the Lake Cadagno chemocline, anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria controlled the bulk C-isotope fractionation, but the influence of GSB and PSB differed with season. Furthermore, the contribution of PSB and GSB to bulk C-isotope fractionation in the chemocline could be traced in the settling fraction and in the sediment. Taken together with other studies, such as lipid biomarker analyzes and investigations of other stratified lakes, these results offer a firmer understanding of diagenetic influences on bacterial biomass.

Abstract:Oxygen and carbon isotopic records have been developed for the Cenozoic carbonate oozes of Sites 752, 754, 756, and 757 based on the analysis of monospecific benthic foraminifers. The intent of this report is to provide a basic isotopic stratigraphy for use in other paleoceanographic studies. The oxygen isotope record displays the enrichments associated with cooling or ice volume buildup at the Eocene/Oligocene boundary, in the middle Miocene, and in the upper Pliocene. The carbon isotopic record contains the Chron 16 enrichment in the lower Miocene and the Chron 6 depletion in the uppermost Miocene.

Abstract:Calcite microfossils are widely used to study climate and oceanography in Earth’s geological past. Coccoliths, readily preserved calcite plates produced by a group of single-celled surface-ocean dwelling algae called coccolithophores, have formed a significant fraction of marine sediments since the Late Triassic. However, unlike the shells of foraminifera, their zooplankton counterparts, coccoliths remain underused in palaeo-reconstructions. Precipitated in an intracellular chemical and isotopic microenvironment, coccolith calcite exhibits large and enigmatic departures from the isotopic composition of abiogenic calcite, known as vital effects. Here we show that the calcification to carbon fixation ratio determines whether coccolith calcite is isotopically heavier or lighter than abiogenic calcite, and that the size of the deviation is determined by the degree of carbon utilization. We discuss the theoretical potential for, and current limitations of, coccolith-based CO2 paleobarometry, that may eventually facilitate use of the ubiquitous and geologically extensive sedimentary archive.

Redox changes in the outer Yangtze Sea (South China) through the Hirnantian Glaciation and their implications for the end-Ordovician biocrisis

Abstract:Two pulses of faunal mortality occurred during the Late Ordovician mass extinction (ca. 445 Ma). This biocrisis is recorded in Hirnantian strata of South China as a stepwise extinction of graptolites in both the hydrologically semi-restricted inner and open outer Yangtze Sea. Although expanded marine euxinia is widely regarded as the main cause of the biocrisis, the spatial-temporal pattern and driving mechanisms behind redox changes, as well as the extent to which they influenced marine faunas, remain unclear. Here, we present a study of mid-shelf and outer-shelf sections of the less-studied outer Yangtze Sea, based on an integrated suite of geochemical proxies [i.e., iron speciation, pyrite δ34S (δ34Spy), and major- and trace-element data] to provide insight into changes in marine redox conditions, chemical weathering rates, and primary productivity across the Hirnantian Glaciation. Iron speciation ratios and trace-element enrichment factors show that euxinia appeared in mid-shelf settings during the late Katian, subsequently expanded into deeper waters, and then diminished during the Hirnantian Glaciation and expanded again thereafter. Expansions of euxinia across the outer Yangtze Sea prior to and after the Hirnantian Glaciation may have been the result of both elevated primary productivity, as indicated by elevated organic carbon accumulation rates (OCAR), and increased sulfate weathering inputs due to preglacial and postglacial enhanced fresh-rock exposure on land. However, we propose that the local development of euxinia was controlled mainly by sulfate availability, which depended on continental weathering intensity—a hypothesis supported by strong covariant relationships between the chemical index of alteration (CIA, a weathering proxy), redox proxies, and δ34Spy values. The contraction of oceanic euxinia during the main glacial interval was caused by a reduction in continental weathering intensity; contemporaneously weaker euxinia, as well as higher δ34Spy values, in outer-shelf relative to mid-shelf areas may have been due to limited terrestrial sulfate supply in deeper sites and small sulfate reservoir in the open ocean during the glaciation. Persistence of euxinia in the outer Yangtze Sea after the termination of the main glacial interval is evidence of a growing sulfate reservoir in early Silurian oceans, probably due to increased continental weathering and rising atmospheric O2 levels. Furthermore, the comparision of the redox and fossil records indicates that elevated extinctions among mesopelagic graptolites coincided with enhanced euxinia in the outer Yangtze Sea, supporting the hypothesis that redox changes were the main stressor of both benthic fauna and some zooplankton. Our results highlight the interrelated influences of climate, continental weathering, and riverine sulfate fluxes on marine redox variations and the biotic crisis of the Late Ordovician.
