Abstract:We have studied spatial and temporal dynamic heterogeneity (DH) in a system of hard-sphere particles, subjected to active forces with constant amplitude and random direction determined by rotational diffusion with correlation time tau. We have used a variety of observables to characterize the DH behavior, including the deviation from standard Stokes-Einstein (SE) relation, a non-Gaussian parameter alpha(2)(Delta t) for the distribution of particle displacement within a certain time interval Delta t, a four-point susceptibility chi(4)(Delta t, Delta L) for the correlation in dynamics between any two points in space separated by distance Delta L within some time window Delta t, and a vector spatial-temporal correlation function S-vec(R, Delta t) for vector displacements within time interval Delta t of particle pairs originally separated by R. By mapping the particle motion into a continuous-time random walk with constant jump length, we can obtain the average waiting time < t(x)> alpha D-s(-1) s and persistence time < t(p)> alpha eta, with D-s the self-diffusion coefficient eta and. the shear viscosity, such that the observable lambda = < tp >/< tx > alpha D-s eta can be calculated as a function of the control parameter tau to show how it deviates from its SE value lambda(0). Interestingly, we find lambda/lambda(0) shows a nonmonotonic behavior for large volume fraction phi(a), wherein lambda/lambda(0) undergoes a minimum at a certain intermediate value of tau, indicating that both small and large particle activity may lead to strong DH. Such a reentrance phenomenon is further demonstrated in terms of the non-Gaussian parameters alpha(2), four-point susceptibility chi(4), and vector spatiotemporal correlation functions S-vec, respectively. Detail analysis shows that it is the competition between the dual roles of particle activity, namely, activity-induced higher effective temperature and activity-induced clustering, that leads to such nontrivial nonmonotonic behaviors. In addition, we find that DH may also show a maximum level at an intermediate value of phi(a) if tau is large enough, implying that a more crowded system may be less heterogeneous than a less crowded one for a system with high particle activity.

Abstract:The Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations are performed to investigate shear flows of polydispersed, cylindrical particles. Binary mixtures and Gaussian distribution mixtures are considered in the simulations to study the effect of polydispersity on the rheology and particle phase stresses. It is observed that no segregation occurs in the shear flows in the absence of gravity and interstitial fluid medium and the orientational alignment of a particle species in a mixture is affected by the interaction with other species. The stresses of a binary mixture are bounded by those of the monodispersed systems of two particle species. The minimum stress difference due to the change in volume fraction of a particle species, i.e. the minimum effect of polydispersity, is observed at the solid volume fraction of 0.2. For the Gaussian distribution systems with the same average particle aspect ratio, the effect of standard deviation of particle aspect ratio on the stresses is limited. A model that accounts for the effect of particle species concentration is eventually proposed to evaluate the stresses of the polydispersed, cylindrical particle flows. In the model, the stress tensor of the polydispersed system is expressed as a sum of the stress tensors of the monodispersed systems of all the particle species, which are linearly scaled by the volume fractions of the corresponding species in the mixture. The model predictions are in good agreement with the DEM simulation results for the binary and Gaussian distribution mixtures.

Abstract:The formation of particle clusters can substantially modify the dynamics and mechanical properties of suspensions in both two and three dimensions. While it has been well established that large network-spanning clusters increase the rigidity of particle systems, it is still unclear how the presence of localized nonpercolating clusters affects the dynamics and mechanical properties of particle suspensions. Here, we introduce self-assembled localized particle clusters at a fluid-fluid interface by mixing a fraction of Janus particles in a monolayer of homogeneous colloids. Each Janus particle binds to a few nearby homogeneous colloids, resulting in numerous small clusters uniformly distributed across the interface. Using a custom magnetic rod interfacial stress rheometer, we apply linear oscillatory shear to the particle-laden fluid interface. By analyzing the local affine deformation of particles from optical microscopy, we show that particles in localized clusters experience substantially lower shear-induced stretching than their neighbors outside clusters. We hypothesize that such heterogeneous dynamics induced by particle clusters increase the effective surface coverage of particles, which in turn enhances the shear moduli of the interface, as confirmed by direct interfacial rheological measurements. Our study illustrates the microscopic dynamics of small clusters in a shear flow and reveals their profound effects on the macroscopic rheology of particle-laden fluid interfaces. Our findings open an avenue for designing interfacial materials with improved mechanical properties via the control of formation of localized particle clusters.
On the Polydisperse Particle Migration and Formation of Chains in a Square Channel Flow of Non-Newtonian Fluids

Abstract:The migration of polydisperse particles and the formation of self-organized particle chains in a square channel flow of non-Newtonian fluids is studied. The effects of rheological behaviour of the fluid, solution concentration and flow rate are explored experimentally. The direct forcing/fictitious domain method is adopted to qualitatively verify the experiments and further analyse the mechanisms of particle migration and particle chain self-organization. The results show that only particles in viscoelastic fluids with negligible shear-thinning effect will remain at the channel centreline as the flow rate increases. The monodisperse particles reach the same velocity when migrating to the equilibrium position. However, in polydisperse suspensions, the smaller the particle diameter, the greater the velocity when the particle migrates to the equilibrium position. In a viscoelastic fluid, the polydisperse particles are more likely to self-organize into long particle chains along the channel centreline than the monodisperse particles, where the large and small particles are at the front and end of the chain. The dimensionless alignment factor (A(f)) is adopted to quantify the formation of particle chains, which is the largest in viscoelastic fluids and rapidly increases before decreasing to a stable value as the flow rate increases. For larger particle diameter ratios and stronger shear-thinning effect, the long particle chain self-organization is less obvious. The self-organizing particle chains at the channel centreline are strongly influenced by the fluid elastic properties and weakly by the inertial effect; however, the shear-thinning effect disperses the particles and prevents the formation of long straight particle chains.

Abstract:Fluidization has been simulated in a broad regime spectrum by using the particle-motion-resolved discrete model in which the motion process of each particle is decomposed into the collision process and the suspension process, while gas flow is treated by solving the Navier–Stokes equation. Momentum conservation of collision mechanics controls the interaction between colliding particles, and the state of each suspended particle is fully dominated by equation of force balance over that particle. As a result, the proposed model could show bubble behaviors above a distributor with several orifices. Further, it has yielded dynamic pictures of clusters and trajectory of particles moving irregularly from the dilute phase to the dense phase or vice versa. The effect of operating conditions on cluster structure and the choking behavior of fluidized systems are also simulated. Therefore, the particle-motion-resolved discrete model has wider applicable range in comparison with the previous discrete model.
Comparison of Dynamical Heterogeneity in Hard-Sphere and Attractive Glass Formers

Abstract:Using molecular dynamics simulations, we have determined that the nature of dynamical heterogeneity in jammed liquids is very sensitive to short-ranged attractions. Weakly attractive systems differ little from dense hard-sphere and Lennard-Jones fluids: Particle motion is punctuated and tends to proceed in steps of roughly a single particle diameter. Both of these basic features change in the presence of appreciable attractions. Transient periods of particle mobility and immobility cannot be discerned at intermediate attraction strength, for which structural relaxation is greatly enhanced. Strong attractions, known to dramatically inhibit relaxation, restore bimodality of particle motion. But in this regime, transiently mobile particles move in steps that are significantly more biased toward large displacements than in the case of weak attractions. This modified feature of dynamic heterogeneity, which cannot be captured by conventional mode coupling theory, verifies recent predictions from a model of spatially correlated facilitating defects.

Abstract:Porous media used in many practical applications contain natural spatial variations in composition and surface charge that lead to heterogeneous physicochemical attractions between the media and transported particles. We performed Stokesian dynamics (SD) simulations to examine the effects of heterogeneous attractions on quiescent diffusion and hydrodynamic dispersion of particles within geometrically ordered arrays of nanoposts. We find that transport under quiescent conditions occurs by two mechanisms, diffusion through the void space and intermittent hopping between the attractive wells of different nanoposts. As the attraction heterogeneity increases, the latter mechanism becomes dominant, resulting in an increase in the particle trajectory tortuosity, deviations from Gaussian behavior in the particle displacement distributions, and a decrease in the long-time particle diffusivity. Similarly, under flow conditions corresponding to low Péclet number (Pe), increased attraction heterogeneity leads to transient localization near the nanoposts, resulting in a broadening of the particle distribution and enhanced longitudinal dispersion in the direction of flow. At high Pe where advection strongly dominates, however, the longitudinal dispersion coefficient is insensitive to attraction heterogeneity and exhibits Taylor–Aris dispersion behavior. Our findings provide insight into how heterogeneous interactions may influence particle transport in complex 3-D porous media.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the connection between spatial density correlation and dynamical heterogeneity in glass-forming liquids. We demonstrate that the cluster size defined by the spatial aggregation of densely packed particles (DPPs) can better capture the difference between the dynamics of the Lennard-Jones glass model and the Weeks-Chandler-Andersen truncation model than the commonly used pair correlation functions. More interestingly, we compare the mobility of DPPs and loosely packed particles, and we find that high local density correlates well with slow dynamics in systems with relatively hard repulsive interactions but links to mobile ones in the system with soft repulsive interactions at one relaxation time scale. Our results show clear evidence that the above model dependence behavior stems from the hopping motion of DPPs at the end of the caging stage due to the compressive nature of soft repulsive spheres, which activates the dynamics of DPPs in the a relaxation stage.

Abstract:Due to the high surface energy, aggregation of particles in colloidal dispersions is almost inevitable. In the present study, a comprehensive model was established by coupling a two-phase lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) and population balance equations (PBEs) to describe the dynamic particle aggregations in flowing and heated colloidal suspensions. Typically, the dynamic aggregations in suspensions under natural convection in a rectangular enclosure are investigated. The real-time particle size distribution (PSD) significantly depended on Ra (Rayleigh numbers), concentration, and enclosure geometry, where increasing particle concentrations can inevitably increase the particle size, but the effect of Ra on PSD is different when enclosure geometry changes. The results of average Nusselt number (Nu(ave)) suggested a significant negative impact of particle aggregation on the heat transfer, especially for high concentration and low Ra cases. Our work should be of value when the properties of practical colloidal dispersions are to be predicted and estimated.

Abstract:We present a systematic investigation on the effect of adding nanoparticles on the dynamics of polymer chains by using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation. The dynamics is characterized by three aspects: molecular motion, relaxation at different length scales, and dynamical heterogeneity. It is found that the motion of polymer chains slows down and the deviation from Gaussian distribution becomes more pronounced with increasing nanoparticle volume fractions. For polymer nanocomposites with R ≤ Rg, the relaxation at the wave vector q = 7.0 displays multistep decay, consistent with the previous reports in strongly interacting polymer nanocomposites. Moreover, a qualitatively universal law is established that dynamic heterogeneity at whole chain's scale follows a nonmonotonic increase with increasing nanoparticle loadings, where the volume fraction of the maximum dynamic heterogeneity corresponds to the particle loading when the average distance between nanoparticles is equal to the Kuhn length of polymer chains. We show that the decoupling between whole chain's dynamics and segment dynamics is responsible for the nonmonotonic behavior of dynamic heterogeneity of whole chains.

Abstract:The dispersion of solid nanoparticles within polymeric materials is widely used to enhance their performance. Many scientific and technological aspects of the resulting polymer nanocomposites have been studied, but the role of the structural and chemical heterogeneity of the nanoparticles has just started to be appreciated. For example, simulations of polymer films on planar heterogeneous surfaces revealed unexpected, non-monotonic activation energy to diffusion on varying the surface composition. Motivated by these intriguing results, here we simulate via molecular dynamics a different, fully three-dimensional system, in which the heterogeneous nanoparticles are incorporated in a polymer melt. The nanoparticles are roughly spherical assemblies of strongly and weakly attractive sites, in fractions of f and 1 - f, respectively. We show that the polymer diffusion is still characterized by a non-monotonic dependence of the activation energy on f. The comparison with the case of homogeneous nanoparticles clarifies that the effect of the heterogeneity increases on approaching the polymer glass transition.

Abstract:We study the formation of a colloidal gel by means of Molecular Dynamics simulations of a model for colloidal suspensions. A slowing down with gel-like features is observed at low temperatures and low volume fractions, due to the formation of persistent structures. We show that at low volume fraction the dynamic susceptibility, which describes dynamic heterogeneities, exhibits a large plateau, dominated by clusters of long living bonds. At higher volume fraction, where the effect of the crowding of the particles starts to be present, it crosses over towards a regime characterized by a peak. We introduce a suitable mean cluster size of clusters of monomers connected by "persistent" bonds which well describes the dynamic susceptibility.

Abstract:Understanding the rotational diffusion dynamics and underlying physical mechanism of rod-like particles in the confinement environments of macromolecular networks is of great importance in many fields. Herein, by combining large-scale simulations as well as theoretical analysis, we demonstrate that the thick rods, with rod diameter comparable with or even larger than the mesh size, in macromolecular networks possess enhanced heterogeneous rotational diffusion characterized by evident hopping among various preferred angles. Through quantifying the shape-dependent rotation, three characteristic rotational dynamics, i.e., Brownian, hopping, and restricted, are identified, which leads to a phase diagram of these rotational patterns related to the diameter and length of the rods. We find that the strong dynamic correlation between the hopping of the rotational and translational dynamics occurs at the boundary between the hopping and restricted rotational dynamics, beyond which the transitional dynamics presents diverse dynamic patterns during the rotational hopping. Furthermore, we develop an analytical model that captures all the regimes of the characteristic rotational patterns, resulting in a mechanistic interpretation of the emergence of the hopping rotational dynamics. The findings bear significance in unraveling the fundamental physics of anisotropic particles transporting in confined mediates like macromolecular networks.

Capillary interactions, aggregate formation and the rheology of particle-laden flows: a lattice Boltzmann study

Abstract:The agglomeration of particles caused by the formation of capillary bridges has a decisive impact on the transport properties of a variety of at a first sight very different systems such as capillary suspensions, fluidized beds in chemical reactors, or even sand castles. Here, we study the connection between the microstructure of the agglomerates and the rheology of fluidized suspensions using a coupled lattice Boltzmann and discrete element method approach. We address the influence of the shear rate, the secondary fluid surface tension, and the suspending liquid viscosity. The presence of capillary interactions promotes the formation of either filaments or globular clusters, leading to an increased suspension viscosity. Unexpectedly, filaments have the opposite effect on the viscosity as compared to globular clusters, decreasing the suspension viscosity at larger capillary interaction strengths. In addition, we show that the suspending fluid viscosity also has a non-trivial influence on the effective viscosity of the suspension, a fact usually not taken into account by empirical models.

Abstract:<p>The nonequilibrium properties and strong spatiotemporal long-range correlations in gas-solid suspensions were analyzed systematically by discrete particle simulation in periodic domains. The effective interphase slip velocity is found to be significantly larger than the particle terminal velocity, the particle velocity distribution function is non-Maxwellian with a high-energy tail and the solid concentration distribution function is far from the discrete Poisson distribution, all of which manifest strong deviation from the equilibrium or homogeneous state in gas-solid flow. The solid concentration, gas and solid velocities are spatiotemporally correlated and show a clear scale-dependence. More importantly, all characteristic correlation lengths scale linearly with the size of simulation domain, although the correlation length of solid concentration is much smaller than those of gas and solid velocities. On the other hand, the characteristic correlation times at first increase with increasing domain size and then seem to approach to asymptotic values. Those results indicate that the heterogeneity and spatiotemporal long-range correlations should be considered properly in continuum theory of heterogeneous gas-solid flow.</p>

Abstract:Complex interfaces stabilized by proteins, polymers or nanoparticles, have a much richer dynamics than those stabilized by simple surfactants. By subjecting fluid-fluid interfaces to step extension-compression deformations, we show that in general these complex interfaces have dynamic heterogeneity in their relaxation response that is well described by a Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts function, with stretch exponent β between 0.4–0.6 for extension, and 0.6–1.0 for compression. The difference in β between expansion and compression points to an asymmetry in the dynamics. Using atomic force microscopy and simulations we prove that the dynamic heterogeneity is intimately related to interfacial structural heterogeneity and show that the dominant mode for stretched exponential relaxation is momentum transfer between bulk and interface, a mechanism which has so far largely been ignored in experimental surface rheology. We describe how its rate constant can be determined using molecular dynamics simulations. These interfaces clearly behave like disordered viscoelastic solids and need to be described substantially different from the 2d homogeneous viscoelastic fluids typically formed by simple surfactants.
Dynamics in the presence of attractive patchy interactions

Abstract:We report extensive monte-carlo and event-driven molecular dynamics simulations of a liquid composed by particles interacting via hard-sphere interactions complemented by four tetrahedrally coordinated short-range attractive ("sticky") spots, a model introduced several years ago by Kolafa and Nezbeda [J. Kolafa and I. Nezbeda, Mol. Phys. 161, 87 (1987)]. To access the dynamic properties of the model we introduce and implement a new event-driven molecular dynamics algorithm suited to study the evolution of hard bodies interacting, beside the repulsive hard-core, with a short-ranged inter-patch square well potential. We evaluate the thermodynamic properties of the model in deep supercooled states, where the bond network is fully developed, providing evidence of density anomalies. We show that, differing from models of spherically symmetric interacting particles, in a wide region of packing fractions the liquid can be super-cooled without encountering the gas-liquid spinodal. In particular, we suggest that there is one optimal packing fraction (not very different from the hexagonal ice packing fraction) at which the bond tetrahedral network fully develops. We find evidence of the dynamic anomalies characterizing network forming liquids. Indeed, around the optimal network packing, dynamics fasten both on increasing and decreasing the packing fraction. Finally we locate the shape of the isodiffusivity lines in the packing fraction-temperature plane and establish the shape of the dynamic arrest line in the phase diagram of the model. Results are discussed in connection to colloidal dispersions of sticky particles and gel forming proteins and their ability to form dynamically arrested states.

Heterogeneity-induced lane and band formation in self-driven particle systems

Abstract:The collective motion of interacting self-driven particles describes many types of coordinated dynamics and self-organisation. Prominent examples are alignment or lane formation which can be observed alongside other ordered structures and nonuniform patterns. In this article, we investigate the effects of different types of heterogeneity in a two-species self-driven particle system. We show that heterogeneity can generically initiate segregation in the motion and identify two heterogeneity mechanisms. Longitudinal lanes parallel to the direction of motion emerge when the heterogeneity statically lies in the agent characteristics (quenched disorder). While transverse bands orthogonal to the motion direction arise from dynamic heterogeneity in the interactions (annealed disorder). In both cases, non-linear transitions occur as the heterogeneity increases, from disorder to ordered states with lane or band patterns. These generic features are observed for a first and a second order motion model and different characteristic parameters related to particle speed and size. Simulation results show that the collective dynamics occur in relatively short time intervals, persist stationary, and are partly robust against random perturbations.

Structure-dependent Drag in Gas–solid Flows Studied with Direct Numerical Simulation

Abstract:Quantification of drag F is critical to the simulation of gas-solid flows in both discrete particle models and two-fluid models. It is commonly accepted that for homogeneous flow the drag is a function of solid volume fraction phi and particle Reynolds number Rep (based on the mean slip velocity and particle radius). However, its adequacy for heterogeneous flows encountered more frequently is in debate yet. In this work, we reveal the strong structural dependence of the drag in both a simple case of two particles and a typical case with stepwise heterogeneity, demonstrating the necessity for a structure-dependent drag description. To quantify such dependence, flow past idealized static suspensions with linear heterogeneity is studied first, which confirms a general form F(Re-p,phi,vertical bar del phi vertical bar,theta) suggested previously, where theta is the angle between the gradient del phi and the mean slip velocity. In the studied range of 5 < Re-p < 30, F depends linearly on Re-p for a given static particle configuration. However, the concrete expressions are yet to be found. Then for dynamic gas-solid suspension, large-scale simulations enabled by supercomputing systems reveal a much more complicated dependence: on one hand, the drag coefficients on individual particles scatter even in the absence of distinct heterogeneity: and on the other hand, with the presence of distinct heterogeneity, the drag predicted by Wen and Yu (1966) deviates significantly from the simulation value in both direction and magnitude. A purely bottom-up statistical approach to establish a drag correlation in this case seems difficult and a theoretical elucidation is needed. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Superdiffusive, heterogeneous, and collective particle motion near the jamming transition in athermal disordered materials

Abstract:We use computer simulations to study the microscopic dynamics of an athermal assembly of soft particles near the fluid-to-solid, jamming transition. Borrowing tools developed to study dynamic heterogeneity near glass transitions, we discover a number of original signatures of the jamming transition at the particle scale. We observe superdiffusive, spatially heterogeneous, and collective particle motion over a characteristic scale which displays a surprising non-monotonic behavior across the transition. In the solid phase, the dynamics is an intermittent succession of elastic deformations and plastic relaxations, which are both characterized by scale-free spatial correlations and system size dependent dynamic susceptibilities. Our results show that dynamic heterogeneities in dense athermal systems and glass-formers are very different, and shed light on recent experimental reports of `anomalous' dynamical behavior near the jamming transition of granular and colloidal assemblies.
