Abstract:Physics of Fluids, Volume 34, Issue 5, May 2022. The breakup mechanism of a conical liquid bridge is reported based on the previously proposed electrostatic liquid loading method. The breakup criterion in terms of interface feature size is derived. Based on the criterion, the breakup mechanism can be categorized as either spontaneous breakup or stretching breakup. The evolution of interface and velocity for two breakup behaviors is subsequently investigated. For the spontaneous breakup, the remnant volume Vd depends primarily on the top radius Rt and is proportional to the square of Rt. For the stretching breakup, the remnant volume depends on the early stage of the stretching, and Vd is proportional to the cube of Rt. In addition, the influence of the stretching velocity U is examined. Results show that U has a weaker effect on the change of remnant volume than the top radius Rt for large capillary numbers. This study is helpful in understanding the liquid bridge breakup mechanism and improving the transfer printing process.

Abstract:The liquid bridge is an important model problem in printing processes. We report the experimental results of stretching a highly viscous liquid bridge between two parallel plates. Depending on the stretching speed, a thin liquid bridge exhibits two representative flow regimes. At low stretching speeds, the liquid bridge deforms in a quasi-static manner and no liquid films are observed. When the stretching speed exceeds a critical value, the contact line fails to follow the retracting meniscus, resulting in the deposition of liquid films on the plate. The entrained film is characterized by an annular rim that retracts and grows by collecting the liquid in the film. It is found that the velocity of the receding contact line is weakly decreasing, and the growth of the rim is characterized by a width of wrim∼Ca1/3t1/2, where the capillary number Ca is defined by the stretching velocity and t is the time. The film may not be fully absorbed into the bulk of the liquid bridge before its eventual breakup at high stretching speeds, leading to variations in the liquid transfer ratio of the two plates.

Abstract:The breakup of viscoelastic liquid films are investigated experimentally and analytically. The breakup phenomena of viscoelastic liquid film are recorded by the time resolved high speed camera. Video images reveal the difference behavior of liquid bubble breakup for Newtonian and viscoelastic liquid. For the Newtonian liquid, cylindrical ligaments are stretched into droplets with large distributions of drop size. For the viscoelastic liquid, the pinch-off point is located on the liquid connections to the nozzle and finally the main part of the ligament no longer elongates. Furthermore, a dispersion relation based on the stability analysis is involved to predict the ligament length and drop mean size after breakup for liquid film. The calculated ligament length is validated by the measured drop mean size at higher air-to-liquid mass flow ratio.

Abstract:The dispersed bubble experiences an impact of flow-focusing from the outer viscous liquid, and may break into satellite bubbles after flowing through the narrower section. We show that the number of satellite bubbles can be characterized by a phase diagram that depends on the capillary number and the Weber number. The number of satellite bubbles can be estimated through the Tgrow (the growth time of the daughter bubble), Tpinch (the pinch-off time of the daughter bubble), and Tpass (the time the initial microbubble need to pass the pore). We defined N = Tpass/(Tpinch + Tgrow) as the dimensionless time and the critical condition: N ∼ 1 to evaluate the bubble breakup. Our work shows that the breakup of the microbubble or droplet through a sudden narrowing joint is predictable and controllable.
Breakup of viscous liquid bridges on solid surfaces

Abstract:The breakup dynamics of viscous liquid bridges on solid surfaces is studied experimentally. It is found that the dynamics bears similarities to the breakup of free liquid bridges in the viscous regime. Nevertheless, the dynamics is significantly influenced by the wettability of the solid substrate. Therefore, it is essential to take into account the interaction between the solid and the liquid, especially at the three-phase contact line. It is shown that when the breakup velocity is low and the solid surface is hydrophobic, the dominant channel of energy dissipation is likely due to thermally activated jumping of molecules, as described by the Molecular Kinetic Theory. Nevertheless, the viscous dissipation in the bulk due to axial flow along the bridge can be of importance for long bridges. In view of this, a scaling relation for the time dependence of the minimum width of the liquid bridge is derived. For high viscosities, the scaling relation captures the time evolution of the minimum width very well. Furthermore, it is found that external geometrical constraints alter the dynamic behavior of low and high viscosity liquid bridges in a different fashion. This discrepancy is explained by considering the dominant forces in each regime. Lastly, the morphology of the satellite droplets deposited on the surface is qualitatively compared to that of free liquid bridges.

Abstract:Liquid bridges formation and rupture between solid surfaces have widespread applications in micro gripping, self-alignment, particles wetting. In the present study, an investigation of the axisymmetric liquid bridge rupture between a sphere and a spherical concave was performed systematically. Detailed analysis was conducted on the influence of the radius ratio, liquid bridge volume, and contact angles on the rupture distance and transfer ratio. When the radius ratio was smaller than 2, it had a substantial impact on the rupture distance and transfer ratio. The experimental studies supported the effectiveness of the simulation modeling based on a minimal energy approach. Theoretical findings by a shooting method and simulated results showed great agreement. It was demonstrated that the maxima absolute error for rupture distance and transfer ratio were 0.001 and 0.0175, respectively. The simulated and theoretical results are helpful to predict the rupture distance and transfer ratio.

Abstract:The stability of liquid bridges formed between two solid substances plays an important role in many industrial applications, including oil–water separation, granular materials, offset printing and oil recovery from fractured reservoirs. Despite numerous studies, fundamental understanding of how slipping and pining regimes of contact angle, may affect the stability of stretching liquid bridges formed between two solid substances is not discussed in the available literature. In this study, the impact of slipping and pining regimes of contact angle on the stability of the dynamic liquid bridge was investigated. To do that, a Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) model was developed and used to analyze liquid bridge stability/evolution in a smooth horizontal fracture for static and dynamic conditions. The models' validities were checked by comparing the models' results with the experimental data. In the static modeling part, a new expression for predicting the rupture distance of liquid bridge was proposed which could be applied for a wide range of liquid bridge volume, contact angle, and Bond number. The power of the liquid bridge volume in the expression depends on both the liquid bridge volume and surface wettability. In the dynamic modeling part, as an interesting result, it was observed that the variations of the rupture distance with Weber, Capillary, and Bond numbers strongly depend on the regimes of contact angle, and the rupture distance for the slipping regime is greater than that of the pinning regime by a factor of 1.02–1.32 depending on liquid bridge volume and surface wettability. The results also showed that the rupture distance approaches asymptotic values for the Bond, Weber, and Capillary numbers equal or less than 10-2 , 10-4 , and 10-5 , respectively. The results of this study contribute to better understanding of how regimes of contact angle would affect liquid bridge stability in smooth horizontal fractures and could improve our understanding of interfacial flow in fractured rocks.

Abstract:A theoretical investigation is conducted to understand the contact line movement and associated contact angle phenomena. Contact line is supposed to move on a thin precursor film, and contact line has a velocity and is subject to viscous stress on the film or geometrically on the solid surface. With the introduction of a characteristic parameter, δ′, the movement of contact line and contact angle phenomena are very well described in both physics and mathematics. The viscous shearing stress exerted by liquid on solid surface was derived, and the behavior of dynamic contact angle was recognized on rough solid surfaces. The analyses indicate that characteristic parameter δ′ is dependent upon solid wall intrinsic property and mechanical performance, and is irrelevant to liquid property. Theoretical predictions are in good agreement with available experimental data in literature.

Abstract:An experimental study on the breakup of a conical liquid sheet from a pressure swirl atomizer was conducted by using a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system. The variation of wavelength, wave speed and amplitude of wave versus liquid pressure was obtained. The results indicate that the cone half angle increases with liquid pressure. The stripped half wavelength liquid fragment seems to break into a series of drops immediately and no obvious contraction from liquid fragment to ligament is seen. The recorded images also show that both short and long wavelength waves exist simultaneously, and influence the breakup of the conical liquid sheet. The result of this study is useful for the purpose of developing and verifying the atomization model of spray produced by a pressure swirl atomizer.
Fluid Property Effects on the Splashing in Teapot Effect

Abstract:Liquid flowing on a curved solid surface usually leads to a typical teapot effect. As the jet velocity increases, the liquid detaches from a curved solid surface completely in one streamline or partially in multiple streamlines. We called the latter splashing. Former studies attributed the splashing behavior to the breaking of the balance between the centrifugal force and the pressure drop across the liquid flow. This study disclosed that the parameters of surface tension, viscosity, and additive molecules of liquid significantly affected the jet splashing in teapot effect. A liquid with a higher Weber number (lower surface tension) and a lower Reynolds number (higher viscosity) prefers to separate from the solid surface in one streamline. Besides, a liquid with larger molecular weight additives is easier to splash. Molecular dynamics simulations disclosed that a higher water molecule density around the additive molecules with a larger cohesive force could more effectively suppress splashing. There is no splashing when the cohesive force is larger than the capillary adhesion force. Otherwise, splashing would occur. This study discloses the importance of cohesive force in the splashing in teapot effect, which might provide an effective guide for industrial applications by tuning the splashing.
Dynamic contact angle hysteresis in liquid bridges

Abstract:This work presents a combined experimental and theoretical study of dynamic contact angle hysteresis using liquid bridges under cyclic compression and stretching between two identical plates. Under various loading rates, contact angle hysteresis for three different liquids was measured by examination of advancing and receding angles in liquid bridges, and the capillary forces were recorded. It is found that, for a given liquid, the hysteretic phenomenon of the contact angle is more pronounced at higher loading rates. By unifying the behaviour of the three liquids, power-law correlations were proposed to describe the relationship between the dynamic contact angle and the capillary number for advancing and receding cases. It is found that the exponents of obtained power-law correlations differ from those derived through earlier methods (e.g., capillary rise), due to the different kinematics of the triple-line. The various hysteretic loops of capillary force in liquid bridges under varied cyclic loading rates were also observed, which can be captured quantitatively by the prediction of our developed model incorporating the dynamic contact angle hysteresis. These results illustrate the importance of varying triple-line geometries during dynamic wetting and dewetting processes, and warrant an improved modelling approach for higher level phenomena involving these processes, e.g., multiphase flow in porous media and liquid transfer between surfaces with moving contact lines.

Dynamics of an axisymmetric liquid bridge close to the minimum-volume stability limit

Abstract:We analyze both theoretically and experimentally the dynamical behavior of an isothermal axisymmetric liquid bridge close to the minimum-volume stability limit. First, the nature of this stability limit is investigated experimentally by determining the liquid bridge response to a mass force pulse for volumes just above that limit. In our experiments, the liquid bridge breakup takes place only when the critical volume is surpassed and is never triggered by the mass force pulse. Second, the growth of the small-amplitude perturbation mode initiating the liquid bridge breakage is measured experimentally and calculated from the linearized Navier-Stokes equations. The results of the linear stability analysis allow one to explain why liquid bridges with volumes just above the stability limit are so robust. Finally, the nonlinear process leading to the liquid bridge breakup is described from both experimental data and the solution of the full Navier-Stokes equations. Special attention is paid to the free-surface pinchoff. The results show that the flow becomes universal (independent of both the initial and boundary conditions) sufficiently close to that singularity and suggest that the transition from the inviscid to the viscous regime is about to take place in the final stage of both the experiments and numerical simulations.

Abstract:The control of spiral breakup due to Doppler instability is investigated. It is found that applying an alternating advective field with suitable amplitude and period can prevent the breakup of spiral waves. Further numerical simulations show that the growing meandering behavior of a spiral tip caused by decreasing the excitability of the medium can be efficiently suppressed by the alternating advective field, which inhibits the breakup of spiral waves eventually.

Abstract:The spreading behavior of a droplet under squeezing between parallel plates is seen in the adhesion of microelectronic components and the lubrication of human joints, which is a process involving complex micro-scale flow behaviors, such as three-phase contact line movement. In this study, a many-body dissipative particle dynamics method is employed to account for this process. The method has been first validated by comparing with Cox's theory of contact lines. Two stages have been identified during the process of squeezing: a contact line retraction state and a symmetrical spreading state, which can also be reflected by the change of the system's surface energy. The combined effects of the squeezing velocity and plate's wettability on the appearance of the first stage have been investigated, showing that a large enough squeezing velocity and a hydrophobic enough substrate will lead to no contraction of the contact line. This study provides a valuable tool to explore the possibility of controlling the droplet squeezing behavior and, thus, is helpful for optimizing the adhesion and lubrication process.

Abstract:In this paper, the vertical vibration influence on the surface velocity of a 5cSt silicone oil liquid bridge has been investigated numerically. The Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the energy conservation equation are solved on a staggered grid, and the two-phase surface is captured by using the mass conserving level set method. The present results indicate that the axial and radial surface velocities of the liquid bridge are suppressed by the external vertical vibration.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally explore the formation, evolution and breakup of Armstrong liquid bridge. The extremely complicated evolution stage is revealed, which involves many coupled processes including the morphology change, current variation, heat transfer, and water evaporation. By focusing on the final fate of this liquid bridge, we observe that the breakup occurs once an effective length ($\tilde{L}$) is reached. This effective length increases linearly with the applied voltage, implying a threshold electric field to sustain the liquid bridge. Moreover, by an introduced external flow, the lifetime of the liquid bridge can be controlled, while the effective length associated with the breakup is independent on the external flow rate. Hence, these findings remarkably demonstrate that the breakup of liquid bridge is directly correlated with the effective length. In order to understand this correlation, a simplified model of an electrified jet is employed to take the electric field into account. By the linear stability analysis, the attained phase diagram agrees with the experiments well. Although a more comprehensive theory is required to consider other factors such as the surface charges, these results might provide a fresh perspective on the ``century-old" Armstrong liquid bridge to further elucidate its underlying physical mechanism.

Abstract:The physical processes near a moving contact line are investigated systematically using molecular dynamics and continuum mechanics. Constitutive relations for the friction force in the contact line region, the fluid-fluid interfacial force, and the stresses in the fluid-solid interfacial region are studied. Verification of force balance demonstrates the importance of the normal stress jump across the contact line region. Effective boundary conditions are derived using force balance. It is found that in the flow regime studied, the deviation of the wall contact angle from the equilibrium contact angle is proportional to the velocity of the contact line. The effective continuum model is solved numerically and the behavior of the apparent contact angle and the wall contact angle is studied. It is found that the fluid-fluid interface near the wall exhibits a universal behavior. The onset of the nonlinear response for the contact line motion is studied within the framework of Blake's molecular kinetic theory. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.
Deformation and breakup of the liquid ligament with various disturbances on the interface in shear flow

Abstract:This study performed a numerical analysis of the deformation and breakup of a liquid ligament with various disturbances on the interface in shear flow. The shear flow generates a three-dimensional flow and vortices around the liquid ligament. These vortices promote the movement of the liquid inside the liquid ligament. When the velocity difference of shear flow increases, a nonlinear effect becomes strong, and turbulence with higher wavenumber components than the initial disturbance occurs at the interface. This turbulence accelerates the ligament splitting and increases the number of breakup droplets. Then, the droplet diameters become uniform, and the atomization quality improves. As the wavenumber of the disturbance applied to the interface increases, the liquid moving velocity along the central axis of the liquid ligament increases. Furthermore, the breakup time of the liquid ligament becomes short. In addition to the initial reference disturbance with a low wavenumber, when turbulence with twice the wavenumber of the reference disturbance is applied to the interface, the interface deformation and the splitting of the liquid ligament are similar to those with the single reference disturbance. When turbulence with four times the wavenumber is added to the initial disturbance with the low wavenumber at the interface, the deformation of the liquid ligament is accelerated, and the liquid ligament splits faster. Additionally, the number of breakup droplets increases; hence, the total surface area of the liquid increases. The droplet diameter becomes uniform; therefore, the atomization quality of the liquid ligament is improved.

Abstract:The breaking up of gas filament in liquid is important in many industrial and scientific applications. In this study a transient axisymmetric model with the level set method is built up to examine the dynamics of a contracting gas filament, and to determine the effects of the aspect ratio, Ohnesorge (Oh) number, and viscosity ratio on its breakup mode. The filament undergoes no break, middle break, or end-pinching modes with increasing aspect ratio at either a low or a high Oh number, and one critical initial aspect ratio is observed for each Oh number. The fate of the filament is determined by the interaction of capillary waves on its surface, and can be predicted accurately by using the one-dimensional wave superposition method. The decreasing viscosity ratio of liquid over gas reduces the critical initial aspect ratio for the fate transition between the no break and breakup modes, and this effect is reduced at a low viscosity ratio. These findings may be helpful in fabricating gas bubbles and for breakup suppression.

Abstract:We study the breakup of confined fluid threads at low flow rates to understand instability mechanisms. To determine the critical conditions between the earlier quasi-stable necking stage and the later unstable collapse stage, simulations and experiments are designed to operate at an extremely low flow rate. Critical mean radii at neck centres are identified by the stop-flow method for elementary microfluidic configurations. Analytical investigations reveal two distinct origins of capillary instabilities. One is the gradient of capillary pressure induced by the confinements of geometry and external flow, whereas the other is the competition between local capillary pressure and internal pressure determined by the confinements.
