Abstract:AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of different bonding techniques ethanol wet bonding and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) wet bonding and a novel collagen cross-linker Quercetin application on the durability of resin-dentin bond and observe the bonded interface under the scanning electron microscope (SEM).MATERIALS AND METHODS: For shear bond strength testing, flat coronal dentin surfaces were prepared on 110 extracted human molars. Teeth were randomly divided into five experimental groups according to different surface pretreatments techniques. Group A was control group without any surface pretreatment. In Group B, ethanol wet bonding pretreatment was done before the application of adhesive. In Group C, DMSO wet bonding was done before the application of adhesive and in Groups D and E, Quercetin along with ethanol and Quercetin along with DMSO pretreatment, respectively, were done before adhesive application. Composite restorations were placed in all the samples. Twenty samples from each group were subjected to immediate and delayed (9 months) shear bond strength evaluation. In addition, two samples per group were subjected to the scanning electron microscopic analysis for the observation of resin-dentin interface.STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Data collected were subjected to the statistical analysis using the one-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey's test at a significance level of <i>P</i> < 0.05.RESULTS: Dentin pretreatment with all the techniques resulted in significantly higher resin-dentin bond strength after 9 months storage with DMSO group showing the highest bond strength values.CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that these biomodification techniques can improve the durability of the resin-dentin bond.

Abstract:Purpose: This study assessed the influence of new dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) containing pretreatments on the aged resin-dentin micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) of a two-step etch-and rinse adhesive system. Methods: Occlusal enamel of forty-eight sound molar teeth were ground to expose mid-coronal dentin. Prepared specimens were restored with AdperTM Single Bond2 (SB2) adhesive systems. Prior to the adhesive system application, specimens were randomly assigned into three groups according to dentin pretreatment [no treatment (control group), ethanol wet-bonding (EtOH), or 50 vol% DMSO dissolved in ethanol (DMSO/EtOH)]. Resin composite block was build-up for each specimen. Specimens were stored under simulated IPP 20 mmHg, immersed in artificial saliva at 37 oC for either 24h or 6m. Specimens were sectioned into sticks of 1mm2 for μTBS testing using a universal testing machine. Mode of failure was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope. Three extra sticks from each subgroup were prepared and assessed for the amount of silver nitrate penetration (wt%) using energy dispersive analytical x-ray (EDAX). Data were statistically analyzed by Two-way ANOVA of Variance. Results: (DMSO/EtOH) group revealed the highest statistically significant mean bond strength and the least silver nitrate penetration compared to the (control) and (EtOH) groups at 24h and 6m. Adhesive failures was most predominant for control group at 24h, with increased percentage of mixed failure for EtOH and DMSO/EtOH groups at 24h and 6m. Conclusions: DMSO/EtOH dentin pretreatment improved the immediate and delayed resin-dentin bond.

Abstract:Salvadora persica is widely used in dental field to improve dental health and promote dental hygiene. Although sodium hypochlorite is highly recommended and regarded as the most effective irrigant in root canal treatment to eliminate bacteria, it can cause harm to patients manifested by severe pain, rapid swelling and also obstruct breathing airway. However, it is believed that the chemical composition of Salvadora persica helps to treat and act as an antibacterial agent in root canal therapy. This study aims to obtain the crude compound from Salvadora persica by using the freeze drying method and to compare the antibacterial activity of the Salvadora persica and sodium hypochlorite against Enterococcus faecalis in aerobic condition. Antibacterial activity results showed that 150 mg/ml of Salvadora persica give comparable effect with sodium hypochlorite against Enterococcus faecalis. It is believed that 60% of alcoholic Salvadora persica extraction is an effective antimicrobial agent to be utilized as an irrigant in root canal treatment.

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of urushiol as an additive to surface acid etchant on dentin structure, by assessing the biostability of dentin, and determine the bonding strengths of dentin and enamel to the composite in the complicated oral microecology. Methods: Etchants with different concentrations of urushiol (0.5, 1, or 3 wt%) were formulated and tested for their bonding performance. Demineralized dentin beams that were etched with experimental etchants were incubated in simulated body fluid solutions by evaluating the weight decrement after 1 month. The effects of urushiol on dentin and matrix metalloproteinases were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Moreover, the antibiotic actions of urushiol on the common cariogenic bacteria Streptococcus mutans , Streptococcus sanguinis , and Streptococcus gordonii as well as the biofilm were evaluated, and its effect on bacterial morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Finally, enamel and dentin specimens were prepared from human molars to determine the depth of demineralization by the etchants and the relationship with the resin bond strengths to enamel and dentin (μTBS) and the morphology of the bonding interface. Results: Urushiol could interact with dentine and inhibit collagenase activity, resulting in biostable dentine. The application of the etchants containing 0.5, 1, or 3 wt% urushiol significantly improved the durability of the dentin bonding interface with its instinctive antibacterial property ( p < 0.05). Conclusion: Urushiol not only improves dentin stability by interacting with collagen and inactivating MMP activity but also plays a role in the antibacterial effects in the complicated oral microecology. The effectiveness of urushiol etchant prolongs the longevity of bonded dental restorations without compromising clinical operation time.

Effects of dimethyl sulfoxide pretreatment on the bonding properties of fluorotic dentin of different severity: An in vitro study

Abstract:Statement of problem: Bonding to fluorotic dentin is weaker than to sound dentin, but methods to improve bonding have not been well addressed. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effects of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) pretreatment on the bond strength and resin-dentin surface of fluorotic dentin of different severity. Material and methods: Phosphoric acid-etched dentin specimens exhibiting mild fluorosis (ML-F), moderate fluorosis (MD-F), and severe fluorosis (SE-F) were randomly bonded with Single Bond 2 (SB2) pretreated with 50% DMSO (experimental groups) or deionized water (control groups). The bonded teeth were sectioned for microshear bond strength (μSBS) testing immediately or after aging, for micromorphology observation of the bonding interface under a scanning electron microscope, and for resin tags and microleakage evaluation under a confocal laser scanning microscope. The degree of conversion of the adhesive resin was calculated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. According to varying bonding steps, the mineralized dentin powders of ML-F, MD-F, and SE-F were randomly divided into 4 subgroups (blank, PA, PA+SB2, and PA+DMSO+SB2) and incubated in artificial saliva to examine the level of enzymatic degradation product of type I collagen. Data were analyzed by using ANOVA and the Tukey test (α=.05). Results: Dental fluorosis and thermocycling had negative effects on μSBS (P<.001), while DMSO pretreatment preserved or even improved μSBS (P<.001). DMSO had no influence on the degree of conversion (P=.618). Significant effects were found for bonding steps (P<.001), but not that of dental fluorosis (P=.131) on the enzymatic degradation product of type I collagen. Images showed sparser and more expanded collagen fibril meshwork, deeper resin penetration, and less microleakage in the experimental groups. Conclusions: DMSO pretreatment provided increased and durable dentin bonding to fluorotic dentin probably by dispersing collagen fibrils into a sparser network and inhibiting the degradation of type I collagen.
The effect of surface treatments of tooth on the shear bond strength of direct composite veneers: An in vitro scanning electron microscope study

Abstract:Background: The bond strength between tooth structure and restorative materials is critical for the long-term success of dental restorations. This study sought to determine how the shear bond strength (SBS) and type of bond breakdown were affected by the inclusion of sandblasting (SB) as a conditioning step before acid etching (AE). Materials and methods: A total of 40 extracted human molars were split into two groups at random: intervention (SB followed by AE) and control (AE only). Composite resin cylinders were constructed on the tooth surface following the application of the bonding agent. A universal testing device was used to determine the SBS, and scanning electron microscopy was used to assess the kind of bond failure. Results: In comparison to the control group, the intervention group displayed a significantly higher SBS (P < 0.05). In contrast to the control group, which showed more adhesive failure at the tooth-resin interface, the intervention group also demonstrated a larger percentage of cohesive failure within the composite resin. Conclusion: As an extra conditioning step, AE after SB considerably increased the SBS between tooth structure and composite resin. The fact that the intervention group experienced a higher percentage of cohesive failure shows that this technique could boost the bond's longevity.

Abstract:Purpose: This study investigated the effects of saliva contamination on bonding performance of two self-etching adhesives. Materials and Methods: Forty caries-free extracted human third molars' cusps were cut off to expose mid-coronal dentin surfaces. Two one-step self-etching adhesives and the respective resin composite from the same manufacturer (Adper Easy One + Filtek Z350 (3M ESPE); Clearfil S3 Bond + Clearfil Majesty (Kuraray Co.)) were applied onto the dentin surfaces for micro-tensile bond strength (MTBS) test. The dentin surfaces were not contaminated (A), were contaminated with saliva before/after priming (B/C), or they were water-sprayed after saliva contamination occurred before/after priming (D/E). The resin-dentin interfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. After the two adhesives were polymerized on saliva-contaminated or uncontaminated conditions, they were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy for degree of conversion (DC), and analyzed by AFM spectroscopy for spatial homogeneity of the adhesives. The data were analyzed using factorial design ANOVA and one-way ANOVA. Results: Compared with control group (A), the saliva contamination after priming significantly reduced both dentin MTBS (p < 0.05). Thorough water-spraying could significantly improve the MTBS of the saliva-contaminated dentin (p < 0.05) or completely restore it. Saliva contamination deteriorated the resin-dentin adaptation, DC, and spatial homogeneity of adhesives. Conclusions: Saliva contamination had a negative effect on bonding performance of self-etching adhesives regarding their dentin MTBS, resin-dentin adaptation, DC, and spatial homogeneity. However, the effect of saliva contamination on the dentin MTBS was related to the individual adhesive used and the time point of contamination.
The pursuit of resin-dentin bond durability: Simultaneous enhancement of collagen structure and polymer network formation in hybrid layers

Abstract:Objective: Imperfect polymer formation as well as collagen's susceptibility to enzymatic degradation increase the vulnerability of hybrid layers over time. This study investigated the effect of new dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-containing pretreatments on long-term bond strength, hybrid layer quality, monomer conversion and collagen structure. Methods: H3PO4-etched mid-coronal dentin surfaces from extracted human molars (n = 8) were randomly treated with aqueous and ethanolic DMSO solutions or following the ethanol-wet bonding technique. Dentin bonding was performed with a three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive. Resin-dentin beams (0.8 mm2) were stored in artificial saliva at 37 °C for 24 h and 2.5 years, submitted to microtensile bond strength testing at 0.5 mm/min and semi-quantitative SEM nanoleakage analysis (n = 8). Micro-Raman spectroscopy was used to determine the degree of conversion at different depths in the hybrid layer (n = 6). Changes in the apparent modulus of elasticity of demineralized collagen beams measuring 0.5 × 1.7 × 7 mm (n = 10) and loss of dry mass (n = 10) after 30 days were calculated via three-point bending and precision weighing, respectively. Results: DMSO-containing pretreatments produced higher bond strengths, which did not change significantly over time presenting lower incidence of water-filled zones. Higher uniformity in monomer conversion across the hybrid layer occurred for all pretreatments. DMSO-induced collagen stiffening was reversible in water, but with lower peptide solubilization. Significance: Improved polymer formation and higher stability of the collagen-structure can be attributed to DMSO's unique ability to simultaneously modify both biological and resin components within the hybrid layer. Pretreatments composed of DMSO/ethanol may be a viable-effective alternative to extend the longevity of resin-dentin bonds.
Influence of ER-CR-YSGG Laser and Photodynamic Therapy on the Dentin Bond Integrity of Nano-Hydroxyapatite Containing Resin Dentin Adhesive: SEM-EDX, Micro-Raman, Micro-Tensile, and FTIR Evaluation

Abstract:The study aimed to analyze the effect of the addition of nano-hydroxyapatite (nano-HA) particles on the mechanical properties of experimental adhesive (EA). Furthermore, dentin interaction of EA (without nano-HA) and EA with nano-HA (hereon referred to as HA-10%) were also investigated and equated. Methods consisting of scanning electron microscopy (SEM)–energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), micro-Raman spectroscopy, micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) test, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were employed to study nano-HA particles shape, dentin bond strength, degree of conversion (DC), and adhesive–dentin interaction. Ninety teeth (N = 90) were collected, and pre-bonding, conditioning of dentin was performed utilizing phosphoric acid (H3PO4) etching, photodynamic therapy (PDT), and ER-CR-YSGG (ECY) laser. The teeth were set to form bonded specimens using two adhesives. Nano-HA particles were spherical-shaped, and EDX confirmed the presence of oxygen, calcium, and phosphorus. Micro-Raman spectroscopy revealed distinct phosphate and carbonate peaks for nano-HA. The μTBS test demonstrated highest values for HA-10% group on the H3PO4 conditioned dentin. The greatest DC was observed for the EA group. The addition of nano-HA-10 wt.% particles in dentin adhesive resulted in improved bond strength. The incorporation also demonstrated acceptable DC (although lower than EA group), suitable dentin interaction, and resin tag formation.

Enhancing the antibacterial and surface hardness of glass ionomer cement modified with Salvadora persica and Chlorhexidine: An in vitro study

Abstract:Objective: This laboratory study evaluated the effect of Salvadora persica (S. persica) root extracts and Chlorhexidine Digluconate (CHX) on the antibacterial and surface hardness properties of glass ionomer cement (GIC). Methods: The in vitro experimental study was conducted at the Baqai Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Baqai Medical University, Karachi, Pakistan, from October 2022 to March 2023. There were a total four experimental groups. The first group consisted of ethanol extract (GIC-SPEE) and second group consisted of hexane extract as (GIC-SPHE) both prepared from Salvadora persica root respectively, and mixed with liquid of GIC separately. The third group comprised chlorhexidine (GIC-CHX) that was also mixing into liquid portion of GIC and the last group was Control i.e. (cGIC). The GIC samples were prepared by using stainless steel metallic moulds with dimension (5mm x 2mm), following the manufacturer guidelines. Antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans was done by disc diffusion test (DDT), and surface hardness test was done by Vickers hardness tester. Statistical analysis was performed using One-Way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc tests (p<0.05). Results: The antibacterial activity against S. mutans reported that the maximum zone of inhibition was obtained at 3 wt% by the GIC-SPEE, when compared with other experimental groups. For surface hardness, the highest mean and standard deviation and significant findings was reported by the group GIC-SPEE. Conclusions: Considering the outcome of this in vitro study, it can be concluded that the addition of 3 wt% GIC-SPEE increased the surface hardness and antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans.
Evaluation of different irrigating solutions on smear layer removal of primary root dentin

Abstract:Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of ethanolic extract of Salvadora persica (S. persica) and BioPure MTAD (a mixture of a tetracycline isomer, an acid, and a detergent) in removing the intracanal smear layer of primary teeth. Materials and methods: The root canal of 40 extracted human primary anterior teeth were cleaned, shaped and grouped into experimental (n = 30) and control (n = 10). The root canals of the positive (n = 5) and the negative control (n = 5) were irrigated for 3 minutes with 5 ml of 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) or saline respectively. The canals in the experimental groups were irrigated for 3 minutes with 5 ml of 1 mg/ml ethanolic extract of S. persica (n = 15) or BioPure MTAD (n = 15) and then flushed with 2 ml of saline. The presence or absence of smear layer at the coronal and middle portion of each canal were examined under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results: A significant difference (p = 0.004) in smear layer removal between S. persica and MTAD at the middle third of the canal was observed. MTAD solution was as effective as 17% EDTA in removing the smear layer. Conclusion: MTAD was significantly more effective in smear layer removal than S. persica solution at the middle third of the canal wall. Clinical significance: Both tested irrigant solutions have the ability to remove the intracanal smear from primary root dentin following cleaning and shaping of the root canal and could be an alternative to EDTA.

Abstract:Damage in the bonding interface is a significant factor that leads to premature failure of dental bonded restorations. The imperfectly bonded dentin-adhesive interface is susceptible to hydrolytic degradation and bacterial and enzyme attack, severely jeopardizing restorations' longevity. Developing caries around previously made restorations, also called "recurrent or secondary caries," is a significant health problem. The replacement of restorations is the most prevailing treatment in dental clinics, leading to the so-called "tooth death spiral". In other words, every time a restoration is replaced, more tooth tissue is removed, increasing the size of the restorations until the tooth is eventually lost. This process leads to high financial costs and detriment to patients' quality of life. Since the complexity of the oral cavity makes prevention a challenging task, novel strategies in Dental Materials and Operative fields are required. This article briefly overviews the physiological dentin substrate, features of dentin bonding, challenges and clinical relevance. We discussed the anatomy of the dental bonding interface, aspects of the degradation at the resin-dentin interface, extrinsic and intrinsic factors affecting dental bonding longevity, perspectives on resin and collagen degradation and how these subjects are connected. In this narrative review, we also outlined the recent progress in overcoming dental bonding challenges through bioinspiration, nanotechnology and advanced techniques to reduce degradation and improve dental bonding longevity.
The effect of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on dentin bonding and nanoleakage of etch-and-rinse adhesives

Abstract:Objective: The objective was to examine the effect of a solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on resin-dentin bond durability, as well as potential functional mechanisms behind the effect. Methods: Microtensile bond strength (μTBS) was evaluated in extracted human teeth in two separate experiments. Dentin specimens were acid-etched and assigned to pre-treatment with 0.5mM (0.004%) DMSO as additional primer for 30s and to controls with water pre-treatment. Two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive (Scotchbond 1XT, 3M ESPE) was applied and resin composite build-ups were created. Specimens were immediately tested for μTBS or stored in artificial saliva for 6 and 12 months prior to testing. Additional immediate and 6-month specimens were examined for interfacial nanoleakage analysis under SEM. Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibition by DMSO was examined with gelatin zymography. Demineralized dentin disks were incubated in 100% DMSO to observe the optical clearing effect. Results: The use of 0.5mM DMSO had no effect on immediate bond strength or nanoleakage. In controls, μTBS decreased significantly after storage, but increased significantly in DMSO-treated group. The control group had significantly lower μTBS than DMSO-group after 6 and 12 months. DMSO also eliminated the increase in nanoleakage seen in controls. 5% and higher DMSO concentrations significantly inhibited the gelatinases. DMSO induced optical clearing effect demonstrating collagen dissociation. Significance: DMSO as a solvent may be useful in improving the preservation of long-term dentin-adhesive bond strength. The effect may relate to dentinal enzyme inhibition or improved wetting of collagen by adhesives. The collagen dissociation required much higher DMSO concentrations than the 0.5mM DMSO used for bonding.
Effect of Different Cavity Disinfectants on Adhesion to Dentin of Permanent Teeth

Abstract:After the elimination of dental caries lesions, some microorganisms may remain viable in the tooth structure. Thus, cavity disinfection is an important procedure. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of cavity disinfectants on the adhesion to dentin of permanent teeth. Sixty molars were ground flat and randomly assigned to six groups: control; chlorhexidine; Aloe vera; glutaraldehyde; EDTA; ethanol. Cavity disinfectants were applied, rinsed, and air-dried. The restorations were performed with the aid of polyethylene tubes. Shear bond strength, work to detachment, and shear modulus were evaluated. All data were statistically analyzed and the level of significance was set at 5%. The control group showed the lowest shear bond strength (8.34 ± 2.68 MPa). Aloe vera showed the lowest work to debonding (2284 J/m2) while chlorhexidine showed the highest (9347 J/m2). Regarding the shear modulus, ethanol, chlorhexidine, and EDTA presented similar values to the control group (216.11 kPa), and glutaraldehyde and Aloe vera presented values twice as high. The use of chlorhexidine, ethanol, EDTA, glutaraldehyde, and Aloe vera did not impair the adhesion established between the dentin of permanent teeth and composite resin. Even though there is a need for clinical studies to support these findings, all disinfectants seem to be good choices as pretreatment agents.
Effect of Root Canal Filling Materials and Pretreatment with Solvents on the Shear Bond Strength of Composite Resin with Primary Tooth Dentin

Abstract:Aim. Root canal filling materials have the tendency to inhibit adhesion of resin-based composites. This study was aimed at evaluating the effect of root canal filling materials and their solvents on the shear bond strength (SBS) of resin composite with the primary tooth dentin. Methods and Materials. Seventy-two intact anterior primary teeth were selected. Smooth dentinal surfaces were prepared to a minimum diameter of 3 mm and thickness of 1.5–2.0 mm. The samples were equally divided into six groups ( n = 12 ). In group 1: control group, no root filling material; in group 2: Metapex, no solvent; in group 3: Metapex+ethanol solvent; in group 4: ZOE, no solvent; in group 5: ZOE+ethanol solvent; and in group 6: ZOE+orange oil solvent were applied. Then, dentin surfaces were etched, and composite restorations were placed and cured. The specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 hours. SBS values were determined using a universal testing machine. Results. The SBS values of composite to dentin in groups 2 and 4 were significantly lower than those in the control group ( P < 0.001 ). Cleansing of the specimens with 96% ethanol after removal of Metapex significantly increased the composite-dentin bond ( P < 0.001 ). Applying ZOE, only orange oil solvent significantly increased the SBS of the composite to the primary tooth dentin ( P = 0.01 ). Conclusion. To reduce the negative effects of endodontic root filling materials on the SBS of composite and primary tooth dentin, ethanol is a suitable solvent when Metapex is used, while orange oil might be a better choice than ethanol when applying ZOE.

Abstract:Introduction: amalgam replacement by tooth-colored restorations has become a common procedure nowadays. Aim: this study was carried out to detect the effect of Penetration of amalgam corroded products into dentin on bonding of both self etch adhesives and resin modified glass ionomer (RMGI). Materials & method: 40 simple occlusal cavities were made in human extracted molars. Cavities were filled with amalgam, stored for one year then amalgam was removed and teeth were divided into two main groups (20 teeth each); group A; where amalgam was without any further increase in cavity depth. Group B; where amalgam was totally removed followed by further increase in cavity depth by 0.5 mm. each group was re divided according to the restorative material used to replace amalgam where group 1: resin composite with self etch adhesive, group 2: RMGI. Teeth were sliced and the interface was examined by scanning electron microscope coupled with EDAX. Results: amalgam remnants appeared at the interface of group A to interfere with bonding while it disappeared from the interface at group B. conclusion: increasing depth of the cavity by 0.5 mm after amalgam removal showed a more reliable interface for the subsequent tooth colored restoration.

Abstract:Wear Properties of PMMA‐S. persica extract‐HA dental composite. The characterization of S. persica (Salvadora persica) extract, which involved evaluating its antibacterial activity, demonstrated the extract's strong efficacy. Additionally, incorporating it into PMMA/HA showcased the composite's good antibacterial activity. The objective of this work is to evaluate how the incorporation of S. persica extract affects the wear resistance of the dental composite PMMA/HA, considering the critical importance of wear resistance in dental applications. The wear response of this biocomposite was tested against an Alumina ball using a pin‐on‐disc tribometer. Initially, the hydroxyapatite (HA) micro particles demonstrate a remarkable influence on wear behavior when incorporated at an optimal percentage (10%wt). This optimal inclusion rate not only significantly increases the wear rate but also instigates a shift in the wear mechanism, favoring abrasive wear while minimizing adhesive wear comparing to PMMA. The addition of the extract nanoparticles to the composite PMMA/HA decreases the wear rate except the composite containing 10 wt% of each filler. Additionally, it introduces adhesive wear, in addition to the existing fatigue and abrasion wear. Thus, the composite PMMA/HA could accommodate up to 10 wt% of the S. persica extract as the optimal percentage that provides antibacterial activity to this biocomposite without exhibiting a deterioration in wear performance. Highlights The evaluation of the effect of incorporating S. persica extract, which provides antibacterial activity, on the wear resistance of the PMMA/HA dental composite generally demonstrates a reduction in this property. The addition of S. persica extract introduces adhesive wear in addition to the fatigue and abrasion wear already present in the PMMA/HA composite. The composite PMMA/HA can accommodate up to 10 wt% of S. persica extract without compromising its wear performance.

Effect of Saliva on the Tensile Bond Strength of Different Generation Adhesive Systems: An In-Vitro Study

Abstract:Background: Newer development of bonding agents have gained a better understanding of factors affecting adhesion of interface between composite and dentin surface to improve longevity of restorations. Objective: The present study evaluated the influence of salivary contamination on the tensile bond strength of different generation adhesive systems (two-step etch-and-rinse, two-step self-etch and one-step self-etch) during different bonding stages to dentin where isolation is not maintained. Materials and methods: Superficial dentin surfaces of 90 extracted human molars were randomly divided into three study Groups (Group A: Two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive system; Group B: Two-step self-etch adhesive system and Group C: One-step self-etch adhesive system) according to the different generation of adhesives used. According to treatment conditions in different bonding steps, each Group was further divided into three Subgroups containing ten teeth in each. After adhesive application, resin composite blocks were built on dentin and light cured subsequently. The teeth were then stored in water for 24 hours before sending for testing of tensile bond strength by Universal Testing Machine. The collected data were then statistically analysed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD test. Results: One-step self-etch adhesive system revealed maximum mean tensile bond strength followed in descending order by Two-step self-etch adhesive system and Two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive system both in uncontaminated and saliva contaminated conditions respectively. Conclusion: Unlike One-step self-etch adhesive system, saliva contamination could reduce tensile bond strength of the two-step self-etch and two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive system. Furthermore, the step of bonding procedures and the type of adhesive seems to be effective on the bond strength of adhesives contaminated with saliva.
Synergistic effects of bacteria, enzymes, and cyclic mechanical stresses on the bond strength of composite restorations

Abstract:Predicting how tooth and dental material bonds perform in the mouth requires a deep understanding of degrading factors. Yet, this understanding is incomplete, leading to significant uncertainties in designing and evaluating new dental adhesives. The durability of dental bonding interfaces in the oral microenvironment is compromised by bacterial acids, salivary enzymes, and masticatory fatigue. These factors degrade the bond between dental resins and tooth surfaces, making the strength of these bonds difficult to predict. Traditionally studied separately, a combined kinetic analysis of these interactions could enhance our understanding and improvement of dental adhesive durability. To address this issue, we developed and validated an original model to evaluate the bond strength of dental restorations using realistic environments that consider the different mechanical, chemical, and biological degradative challenges working simultaneously: bacteria, salivary esterases, and cyclic loading. We herein describe a comprehensive investigation on dissociating the factors that degrade the bond strength of dental restorations. Our results showed that cariogenic bacteria are the number one factor contributing to the degradation of the bonded interface, followed by cyclic loading and salivary esterases. When tested in combinatorial mode, negative and positive synergies towards the degradation of the interface were observed. Masticatory loads (i.e., cycling loading) enhanced the lactic acid bacterial production and the area occupied by the biofilm at the bonding interface, resulting in more damage at the interface and a reduction of 73 % in bond strength compared to no-degraded samples. Salivary enzymes also produced bond degradation caused by changes in the chemical composition of the resin/adhesive. However, the degradation rates are slowed compared to the bacteria and cyclic loading. These results demonstrate that our synergetic model could guide the design of new dental adhesives for biological applications without laborious trial-and-error experimentation.

Abstract:Background and objective: Cariostatic and preventive agents are applied to create caries-resistant dentin surfaces and may affect subsequent resin bonding. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different agents with and without Er:YAG laser irradiation on the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of resin composite to sound dentin (SD) and caries-affected dentin (CAD), and to assess the morphological and chemical changes in the specimens. Materials and methods: Ninety-six extracted molar teeth were divided into a control group (deionized water) and two experimental groups (ammonium hexafluorosilicate [SiF], silver diamine fluoride [SDF]), that subdivided according to different conditions (SD, CAD, SD+laser irradiation, CAD+laser irradiation). After treatment procedures, the teeth were restored and the µTBS was tested with a universal testing machine. Morover, 144 teeth were prepared and after treatment modalities; morphological changes of the surface were investigated and elemental analyses were performed using scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: SDF and SiF applications reduced the µTBS values in both the SD and CAD subgroups (P < 0.05). Laser irradiation increased the µTBS values in the SiF group and the values were adversely affected in the SDF group (P < 0.05). Fluoride content of the specimens increased in all of the treatment groups, compared with the control group. Silver content was detected only in the SDF group, and silicon was detected only in the SiF group. Conclusions: The µTBS values of resin composite, surface morphology and chemical characteristics of dentin were affected by the material type, dentin condition and laser irradiation and the use of SiF and SDF solutions under the resin restorations do not seem appropriate.
