Abstract:In the context of the information society, wearable devices show broad prospects in the fields of vital signs monitoring, plant health monitoring, artificial electronic skin. As an inseparable part of wearable devices, flexible pressure/strain sensors have attracted wide attention. Structures and active materials are core factors affecting sensing performance. For the past few years, the introduction of carbon materials, especially carbon nanotubes, has provided more possibilities for improving performance. Great efforts have been devoted to researching pressure/strain sensors based on carbon nanotubes with excellent performance or unique features. Herein, the process in recent years in novel flexible pressure/strain sensors based on carbon nanotubes is reviewed. Fabrication strategies are discussed because it suggests sensing performance with significant differences and gives additional features like biodegradability and corrosion resistance to sensors. Furthermore, the scope of application has been extended to plant monitor, except for common human movement monitor. This review can help the researchers compare the influence of different fabrication strategies on the sensing performance and provide references for fabricating sensors in different applications.

Abstract:In situ graphene hybridization is applied within the nanotube voids to reinforce carbon nanotube (CNT) networks, as demonstrated by X. M. Li, H. W. Zhu, Y. Fang, and co-workers on page 2078. The CNT–graphene hybrids effectively resist buckling deformation of the CNT network and load transfer within the hybridized films, which could be applied in wearable and implantable electronics.

Abstract:Textiles, as a desired platform for wearable smart technology, can be integrated with smart elements in the hierarchical levels of the fabric structure. In this study, a new way to make strain sensing fabric was developed by embedding a single strain sensing carbon nanotube (CNT)-based yarn into the woven structure. To overcome the abrasion during insertion, the yarn was coated with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) to achieve higher mechanical performance. The gauge factor of the yarn was improved from 0.91 to 1.64. The sensing properties of CNT/PVA yarn integrated strain sensing fabric showed a gauge factor of over 1.1, a degree of linearity of more than 97% and good stability and repeatability during cyclic loading. Fabric with different integrated yarn lengths, patterns and output connections has also been investigated. The results showed that the yarn length and bend over section had a great influence on the strain sensing properties of the fabric. Furthermore, the fabric strain sensor exhibited a quick and precise response to the finger motion detection, demonstrating potential in wearable electronics.

Abstract:Flexible strain-sensitive sensors have been receiving intensive attention in many aspects ranging from human motion capture to health-related signal monitoring. However, the fabric strain sensor with multi-directional sensing capability, besides having a wide strain range and high response sensitivity, is still very challenging and deserves further exploration. Here, we have prepared a wearable cotton fabric strain sensor uniformly decorated with single-walled carbon nanotubes through a facile solution process. The unique hierarchical architecture of the cotton fabric woven from twisted yarns combined with the conductive carbon nanotube network endows the fabric strain sensors with attractive performance, including low detection limit, large workable strain range, fascinating stability and durability, excellent direction-dependent strain response, and good air permeability. The strain sensor without polymer encapsulation can not only monitor subtle and large multi-directional motions but also fit well to the human body with satisfactory comfort, demonstrating its potential application in wearable electronics and intelligent clothing.

Abstract:Transparent, stretchable films of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted significant attention for applications in flexible electronics, while the lack of structural strength in CNT networks leads to deformation and failure under high mechanical load. In this work, enhancement of the strength and load transfer capabilities of CNT networks by chemical vapor deposition of graphene in the nanotube voids is proposed. The graphene hybridization significantly strengthens the CNT networks, especially at nanotube joints, and enhances their resistance to buckling and bundling under large cyclic strain up to 20%. The hybridized films show linear and reproducible responses to tensile strains, which have been applied in strain sensors to detect human motions with fast response, high sensitivity, and durability.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed the explosive development of flexible strain sensors. Nanomaterials have been widely utilized to fabricate flexible strain sensors, because of their high flexibility and electrical conductivity. However, the fabrication processes for nanomaterials and the subsequent strain sensors are generally complicated and are manufactured at high cost. In this work, we developed a facile dry-Meyer-rod-coating process to fabricate sheath-core-structured single-fiber strain sensors using ultrafine graphite flakes as the sheath and silk fibers as the core by virtue of their flexibility, high production, and low cost. The fabricated strain sensor exhibits a high sensitivity with a gauge factor of 14.5 within wide workable strain range up to 15%, and outstanding stability (up to 3000 cycles). The single-fiber-based strain sensors could be attached to a human body to detect joint motions or easily integrated into the multidirectional strain sensor for monitoring multiaxial strain, showing great potential applications as wearable strain sensors.

Abstract:One-dimensional and two-dimensional materials are widely used to compose the conductive network atop soft substrate to form flexible strain sensors for several wearable electronic applications. However, limited contact area and layer misplacement hinder the rapid development of flexible strain sensors based on 1D or 2D materials. To overcome these drawbacks above, we proposed a hybrid strategy by combining 1D carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and 2D graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), and the developed strain sensor based on CNT-GNP hierarchical networks showed remarkable sensitivity and tenability. The strain sensor can be stretched in excess of 50% of its original length, showing high sensitivity (gauge factor 197 at 10% strain) and tenability (recoverable after 50% strain) due to the enhanced resistive behavior upon stretching. Moreover, the GNP-CNT hybrid thin film shows highly reproducible response for more than 1000 loading cycles, exhibiting long-term durability, which could be attributed to the GNPs conductive networks significantly strengthened by the hybridization with CNTs. Human activities such as finger bending and throat swallowing were monitored by the GNP-CNT thin film strain sensor, indicating that the stretchable sensor could lead to promising applications in wearable devices for human motion monitoring.

Abstract:<p>This paper reports a highly sensitive and stretchable strain sensor based on a spirally layered composite yarn and the synergistic effect of carbon nanotube (CNT) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO). It is demonstrated that the addition of small amount of 2D RGO into 1D CNT network could significantly improve the strength, conductivity, and sensitivity (with gauge factor up to 2160.4) of sensor because of the formation of more connection points, while the spirally layered structure endows the sensor with large working strain of 620% and good durability owing to the protection of conductive layer by elastic substrate during stretching. These features make it promising for detection of a wide range of human activities from tiny motion of pronunciation to large movement of knee bending. Furthermore, this yarn shaped sensor can also be sewed into common textile to develop wearable electronic devices as demonstrated in this study of smart glove.</p>

Abstract:Carbon-based flexible wearable sensors have received widespread attention due to their wide application in wearable electronics. This work reviewed the different carbon-based sensors from three aspects, such as fabrication, performance and working mechanisms. Carbon materials mainly included carbon nanotubes, graphene, carbon black and other carbon materials. In particular, carbon nanotubes and graphene can be assembled into various multiscale macrostructures to prepare various forms of flexible sensors, such as films, fibers, yarns or fabrics. Up to now, the reviewed flexible strain sensors in general exhibit high sensitivity, wide sensing range, fast response, long-term stability and durability. However, in the face of complex environmental and multifunctional integration in practical applications, wearable strain sensors need new technological breakthroughs in the preparation process, material synthesis and device integration.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube (CNT) based sensors are often fabricated by dispersing CNTs into different types of polymer. In this paper, a prototype carbon nanotube (CNT) yarn strain sensor with excellent repeatability and stability for in situ structural health monitoring was developed. The CNT yarn was spun directly from CNT arrays, and its electrical resistance increased linearly with tensile strain, making it an ideal strain sensor. It showed consistent piezoresistive behavior under repetitive straining and unloading, and good resistance stability at temperatures ranging from 77 to 373 K. The sensors can be easily embedded into composite structures with minimal invasiveness and weight penalty. We have also demonstrated their ability to monitor crack initiation and propagation.

Abstract:Preparation, mechaincal and sensing performance, conductive model of CNTs/TPU twisted yarn. Wearable flexible electronic strain sensor devices have gained significant attention in recent years due to their potential for detecting human motion in various scenarios. However, the development of strain sensors with high sensitivity across a wide range of strains remains a major challenge. We present herein a novel strain sensor based on a graded structure thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite yarn with significantly enhanced mechanical performance imparted by the designed structure. The twisted CNTs/TPU spiral yarn demonstrated a fracture elongation of up to 1066% while maintaining charge conductivity under high‐strain conditions. Moreover, it exhibited sensitive changes in resistance versus tensile strain, excellent repeatability, and stability. As a strain sensor, it achieved a gauge factor (GF) of 67.2 within a strain range below 50%, reaching 51.7 in a strain range exceeding 150%. With a fast response time of 0.12 s, it enabled accurate identification of movements in different body parts. These findings highlight the broad application potential of the designed spiral yarn strain sensor in areas such as human motion monitoring and human–computer interaction. Abstract:Flexible strain sensors have attracted extensive attention in electronic skins and health monitoring systems. To date, it remains a great challenge for the development of a multifunctional strain sensor with simultaneous ultralow detection limit, broad sensing range, and high repeatability. In this paper, we report a new carbon nanotube/flexible fiber-shaped strain sensor. The fiber substrate has a novel microstructure where a highly elastic rubber fiber core is tightly wound by a continuous spring-like polypropylene fiber as the shell. Our sensor offers combined sensing performances of ultralow detection limit of 0.01% strain, wide sensing range of 200% strain, and high repeatability of 20 000 cycles by designing double-leveled helical gaps. This strain sensor shows a rapid response time of 70 ms under both stretching and releasing. In addition, it is available for a variety of other deformations such as bending and torsion. Due to the unique fiber structure, it can extend the torsion detection range to 1000 rad m-1. On the basis of the superior sensing performances, our sensor demonstrates to efficiently work for both subtle physiological activities and vigorous human motions. This work provides a general and effective strategy for designing smart wearable devices with high performance.
Flexible Strain Sensor Based on Aerogel-Spun Carbon Nanotube Yarn with a Core-Sheath Structure

Abstract:Flexible strain sensors with good linear sensitivity, mechanical compatibility with systems and robustness over repeated usages are very desirable in wearable electronics, smart textiles, and other multifunctional structures. To this end, carbon nanotube/polyvinyl alcohol (CNT/PVA) coated yarn with a core-sheath structure (inner pure CNT core and outer CNT-PVA sheath) was fabricated by dipping the aerogel-spun CNT yarn in various PVA solutions for a short period of time. The as-produced CNT/PVA coated yarn has an electrical conductivity of 447.1 S/cm and exhibits a linear piezoresistive response, with a high gauge factor (the ratio of electrical resistance change to strain change) of 2.36. Compared with the pure CNT yarn, the PVA coated yarn has an improved tensile strength by 71.8%, Young’s modulus by 157.3%, abrasion-resistance by 100%, and enhanced stability after cyclic loading. This demonstrates a promising strain sensor for system integration into flexible intelligent devices or other advanced composites.
Preparation of a Highly Sensitive and Stretchable Strain Sensor of MXene/Silver Nanocomposite-Based Yarn and Wearable Applications

Abstract:As a wearable device, highly sensitive and stretchable strain sensors should be integrated to monitor various daily actions, which include large- and small-scale strains, such as jumping, running, heartbeat, and pulse. At present, the method of preparing strain sensors is mainly to impregnate or load materials like graphene, carbon nanotube, and their union products on elastic substrates to obtain highly sensitive characteristics. Both well-known carbon-based and other single-dimensional nanomaterials do not have high flexibility and conductivity, which limits the improvement of sensitivity. However, a novel material MXene Ti3C2Tx has a two-dimensional (2D) sheet structure, which allows for higher electron and ion transmission rates. In addition, it is easier to be combined with other nanomaterials as a nanosubstrate, greatly improving malleability. Hence, we creatively prepared zero-dimensional (0D)-one-dimensional (1D)-2D multi-dimensional nanomaterials, which designed 0D silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) loaded on 2D MXene nanosheets and compounded with 1D silver nanowires (AgNWs). The method improves the elasticity and conductivity of traditional single-dimensional materials, wherein AgNPs built a bridge between AgNWs and MXene, which ensures continuity and a high gauge factor even at a large strain (200%) of yarn. The composite yarn strain sensor has a remarkably high strain and sensitivity, effectively monitoring the large and small deformations of various parts of the human body, whose fabric can be an electrothermal device. It has vital inspiration for the development of intelligent textiles, which would be used in medical devices, artificial skin, and other wearable fields.

Abstract:With the booming development of flexible electronics, the need for a multifunctional and high-performance strain sensor has become increasingly important. Although significant progress has been made in designing new microstructures with sensing capabilities, the trade-off between sensitivity and workable strain range has prevented the development of a strain sensor that is both highly sensitive and also stretchable. Here, a wrinkle-assisted crack microstructure is designed and fabricated via pre-stretching the multi-walled carbon nanotubes ink (CNTs ink)/polyurethane yarn (PU yarn). This designed structure originates from the mismatch in Young's modulus and elasticity between the CNTs ink and PU yarn during the stretching process. The structure endows the sensor with combined characteristics of a high sensitivity towards stretching strain (gauge factor (GF) of 1344.1 at 200% strain), an ultralow limit of detection (<0.1% strain), excellent durability (>10,000 cycles), a wide workable strain range (0-200%), and outstanding response and stability toward bending deformation. This high-performance strain sensor will see widespread improved performance across applications such as intelligent fabrics, electrical skins, and fatigue detection for full-range human motion monitoring.
A Single-material-printed, Low-cost design for a Carbon-based fabric strain sensor

Abstract:The manufacturing of flexible strain sensors for wearable electronics usually requires different conductive materials for the sensing part and the connection part. This increases the complexity, cost, and performance issues due to the mismatch of the thermo-electro-mechanical properties of the materials. Herein, a new design scheme using a single conductive material is presented for a low-cost mass-producible fabric strain sensor, where a carbon/silicone nanocomposite is screen-printed to make both parts. By exploring the dimension effect and modelling of the conductive tracks, and adopting a large difference of over 100 times in aspect ratio, this research makes the electrical response of the fabric strain sensor depend almost exclusively on the sensing part, while its connection part has a low resistance. The sensor exhibits outstanding performance with a wide working range (60% strain), adequate linearity, long fatigue life (∼50,000 cycles), and mechanical robustness, rendering it suitable for human body movement detection. Moreover, the manufacturing process is simple and low-cost ($11 per m2). Thus, the new design scheme overcomes the mismatch issue and provides an important reference value for the design of flexible resistive sensors working in a high resistance range, from ∼ 100 KΩ to several MΩ.

Abstract:A highly sensitive strain sensor is essential for the wearable electronic in constantly emerging applications such as human motion monitoring, personalized healthcare, human-machine interaction, soft robot and smart skin. However, most of the physical sensors currently reported are facing with challenges of non-adjustable sensing performance, unsatisfactory linearity, complicated preparation processes, and small working ranges, which greatly restricts their practical applicability. In this work, we proposal a facile technology base on the structural and dimensional engineering of carbon nanotube (CNT) conducting networks, to fabricate the flexible and stretchable strain sensor with tunable sensitivity and superior linearity in a wide sensing range. The threedimensional CNT frameworks with adjustable density were constructed by the chemical vapor deposition method, which were used as the filler network to prepare the flexible CNT/polydimethylsiloxane (CNT/PDMS) composites. The resultant strain sensors base on the CNT/PDMS composites can realize the tunable sensitivities (gauge factor ranges from 0.7 to 233 at 100 % strain) by simply changing and regulating the structural density and macro-size of sensing strips. Meanwhile, the obtained sensors possess excellent linearity (R-2 > 90 %) and repeatability on the 10 000 cycles. The technology developed in this work will offer a wide range of practical applications in wearable electronics field.

The sensor can be stretched up to 500% with high sensitivity in a wide strain range and can be assembled into wearable devices for the detection of both large and subtle human activities, showing great potential in human-motion detection and robotics.

Abstract:The increasing demand for wearable electronic devices has made the development of highly elastic strain sensors that can monitor various physical parameters an essential factor for realizing next generation electronics. Here, we report an ultrahigh stretchable and wearable device fabricated from dry-spun carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers. Stretching the highly oriented CNT fibers grown on a flexible substrate (Ecoflex) induces a constant decrease in the conductive pathways and contact areas between nanotubes depending on the stretching distance; this enables CNT fibers to behave as highly sensitive strain sensors. Owing to its unique structure and mechanism, this device can be stretched by over 900% while retaining high sensitivity, responsiveness, and durability.
