Abstract:This is my PhD thesis which was defended in May 2021. We call an induced cycle of length at least four a hole. The parity of a hole is the parity of its length. Forbidding holes of certain types in a graph has deep structural implications. In 2006, Chudnovksy, Seymour, Robertson, and Thomas famously proved that a graph is perfect if and only if it does not contain an odd hole or a complement of an odd hole. In 2002, Conforti, Cornuéjols, Kapoor and Vuškovíc provided a structural description of the class of even-hole-free graphs. In Chapter 3, we provide a structural description of all graphs that contain only holes of length $\ell$ for every $\ell \geq 7$. Analysis of how holes interact with graph structure has yielded detection algorithms for holes of various lengths and parities. In 1991, Bienstock showed it is NP-Hard to test whether a graph G has an even (or odd) hole containing a specified vertex $v \in V(G)$. In 2002, Conforti, Cornuéjols, Kapoor and Vuškovíc gave a polynomial-time algorithm to recognize even-hole-free graphs using their structure theorem. In 2003, Chudnovsky, Kawarabayashi and Seymour provided a simpler and slightly faster algorithm to test whether a graph contains an even hole. In 2019, Chudnovsky, Scott, Seymour and Spirkl provided a polynomial-time algorithm to test whether a graph contains an odd hole. Later that year, Chudnovsky, Scott and Seymour strengthened this result by providing a polynomial-time algorithm to test whether a graph contains an odd hole of length at least $\ell$ for any fixed integer $\ell \geq 5$. In Chapter 2, we provide a polynomial-time algorithm to test whether a graph contains an even hole of length at least $\ell$ for any fixed integer $\ell \geq 4$.

The Shortest Even Cycle Problem Is Tractable

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Computing, Ahead of Print. Given a directed graph as input, we show how to efficiently find a shortest (directed, simple) cycle on an even number of vertices. As far as we know, no polynomial-time algorithm was previously known for this problem. In fact, finding any even cycle in a directed graph in polynomial time was open for more than two decades until Robertson, Seymour, and Thomas (Ann. of Math. (2), 150 (1999), pp. 929–975) and, independently, McCuaig (Electron. J. Combin., 11 (2004), R7900) (announced jointly at STOC 1997) gave an efficiently testable structural characterization of even-cycle-free directed graphs. Methodologically, our algorithm relies on the standard framework of algebraic fingerprinting and randomized polynomial identity testing over a finite field and, in fact, relies on a generating polynomial implicit in a paper of Vazirani and Yannakakis (Discrete Appl. Math., 25 (1989), pp. 179–190) that enumerates weighted cycle covers by the parity of their number of cycles as a difference of a permanent and a determinant polynomial. The need to work with the permanent—known to be #P-hard apart from a very restricted choice of coefficient rings (L. G. Valiant, Theoret. Comput. Sci., 8 (1979), pp. 189–201)—is where our main technical contribution occurs. We design a family of finite commutative rings of characteristic 4 that simultaneously (i) give a nondegenerate representation for the generating polynomial identity via the permanent and the determinant, (ii) support efficient permanent computations by extension of Valiant's techniques, and (iii) enable emulation of finite-field arithmetic in characteristic 2. Here our work is foreshadowed by that of Björklund and Husfeldt (SIAM J. Comput., 48 (2019), pp. 1698–1710) who used a considerably less efficient commutative ring design—in particular, one lacking finite-field emulation—to obtain a polynomial-time algorithm for the shortest two disjoint paths problem in undirected graphs. Building on work of Gilbert and Tarjan (Numer. Math., 50 (1986), pp. 377–404) as well as Alon and Yuster (J. ACM, 42 (2013), pp. 844–856), we also show how ideas from the nested dissection technique for solving linear equation systems—introduced by George (SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 10 (1973), pp. 345–363) for symmetric positive definite real matrices—leads to faster algorithm designs in our present finite-ring randomized context when we have control of the separator structure of the input graph; for example, this happens when the input has bounded genus.

Abstract:Let ${\cal{C}}_1$ be the set of fundamental cycles of breadth-first-search trees in a graph $G$ and ${\cal{C}}_2$ the set of the sums of two cycles in ${\cal{C}}_1$. Then we show that $(1) {\cal{C}}={\cal{C}}_1\bigcup{\cal{C}}_2$ contains a shortest $\Pi$-twosided cycle in a $\Pi$-embedded graph $G$;$(2)$ $\cal{C}$ contains all the possible shortest even cycles in a graph $G$;$(3)$ If a shortest cycle in a graph $G$ is an odd cycle, then $\cal{C}$ contains all the shortest odd cycles in $G$. This implies the existence of a polynomially bounded algorithm to find a shortest $\Pi-$twosided cycle in an embedded graph and thus solves an open problem of B.Mohar and C.Thomassen[2,pp112]

Abstract:We prove the existence of a computable function $f\colon\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{N}$ such that for every integer $k$ and every digraph $D$ either contains a collection $\mathcal{C}$ of $k$ directed cycles of even length such that no vertex of $D$ belongs to more than four cycles in $\mathcal{C}$, or there exists a set $S\subseteq V(D)$ of size at most $f(k)$ such that $D-S$ has no directed cycle of even length. Moreover, we provide an algorithm that finds one of the two outcomes of this statement in time $g(k)n^{\mathcal{O}(1)}$ for some computable function $g\colon \mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{N}$. Our result unites two deep fields of research from the algorithmic theory for digraphs: The study of the Erdős-Pósa property of digraphs and the study of the Even Dicycle Problem. The latter is the decision problem which asks if a given digraph contains an even dicycle and can be traced back to a question of Pólya from 1913. It remained open until a polynomial time algorithm was finally found by Robertson, Seymour, and Thomas (Ann. of Math. (2) 1999) and, independently, McCuaig (Electron. J. Combin. 2004; announced jointly at STOC 1997). The Even Dicycle Problem is equivalent to the recognition problem of Pfaffian bipartite graphs and has applications even beyond discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science. On the other hand, Younger's Conjecture (1973), states that dicycles have the Erdős-Pósa property. The conjecture was proven more than two decades later by Reed, Robertson, Seymour, and Thomas (Combinatorica 1996) and opened the path for structural digraph theory as well as the algorithmic study of the directed feedback vertex set problem. Our approach builds upon the techniques used to resolve both problems and combines them into a powerful structural theorem that yields further algorithmic applications for other prominent problems.

A strengthening on consecutive odd cycles in graphs of given minimum degree

Abstract:Liu and Ma [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 2018] conjectured that every $2$-connected non-bipartite graph with minimum degree at least $k+1$ contains $\lceil k/2\rceil $ cycles with consecutive odd lengths. In particular, they showed that this conjecture holds when $k$ is even. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture for any $k\in \mathbb N$. Moreover, we also improve some previous results about cycles of consecutive lengths.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 4, Page 2721-2749, December 2024. In 1959, Erdős and Gallai proved that every graph [math] with average vertex degree [math] contains a cycle of length at least [math]. We provide an algorithm that for [math], in time [math] decides whether a 2-connected [math]-vertex graph [math] contains a cycle of length at least [math]. This resolves an open problem explicitly mentioned in several papers. The main ingredients of our algorithm are new graph-theoretical results interesting on their own.

Abstract:Bondy and Vince showed that every graph with minimum degree at least three contains two cycles of lengths differing by one or two. We prove the following average degree counterpart that every n ‐vertex graph G with at least 5 2 ( n − 1 ) edges, unless 4 | ( n − 1 ) and every block of G is a clique K 5 , contains two cycles of consecutive even lengths. Our proof is mainly based on structural analysis, and a crucial step which may be of independent interest shows that the same conclusion holds for every 3‐connected graph with at least six vertices. This solves a special case of a conjecture of Verstraëte. The quantitative bound is tight and also provides the optimal extremal number for cycles of length two modulo four.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the following result. For given integers k≥1,t≥0 with k≥t and an odd integer l≥3 , there exists an integer n0=n0(k,t,l) satisfying the following: If D is a digraph of order n≥n0 , and if dD+(u)+dD−(v)≥n+t for every two distinct vertices u and v with (u,v)∉A(D) , then D contains k vertex-disjoint directed cycles of length l or l+1 such that at least t of them are of length l . This is a common extension of the results obtained by Brandt et al. (1997) and, Chiba and Yamashita (2018). We also discuss the relation between our result and problems on packing alternating cycles into bipartite graphs.

Abstract:We prove a refinement of the flat wall theorem of Robertson and Seymour to undirected group-labelled graphs $(G,\gamma)$ where $\gamma$ assigns to each edge of an undirected graph $G$ an element of an abelian group $\Gamma$. As a consequence, we prove that $\Gamma$-nonzero cycles (cycles whose edges sum to a non-identity element of $\Gamma$) satisfy the half-integral Erdős-Pósa property, and we also recover a result of Wollan that, if $\Gamma$ has no element of order two, then $\Gamma$-nonzero cycles satisfy the Erdős-Pósa property. As another application, we prove that if $m$ is an odd prime power, then cycles of length $\ell \mod m$ satisfy the Erdős-Pósa property for all integers $\ell$. This partially answers a question of Dejter and Neumann-Lara from 1987 on characterizing all such integer pairs $(\ell,m)$.

Abstract:We present a tight extremal threshold for the existence of Hamilton cycles in graphs with large minimum degree and without a large ``bipartite hole`` (two disjoint sets of vertices with no edges between them). This result extends Dirac's classical theorem, and is related to a theorem of Chvátal and Erdős. In detail, an $(s, t)$-bipartite-hole in a graph $G$ consists of two disjoint sets of vertices $S$ and $T$ with $|S|= s$ and $|T|=t$ such that there are no edges between $S$ and $T$; and $\widetilde{\alpha}(G)$ is the maximum integer $r$ such that $G$ contains an $(s, t)$-bipartite-hole for every pair of non-negative integers $s$ and $t$ with $s + t = r$. Our central theorem is that a graph $G$ with at least $3$ vertices is Hamiltonian if its minimum degree is at least $\widetilde{\alpha}(G)$. From the proof we obtain a polynomial time algorithm that either finds a Hamilton cycle or a large bipartite hole. The theorem also yields a condition for the existence of $k$ edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles. We see that for dense random graphs $G(n,p)$, the probability of failing to contain many edge-disjoint Hamilton cycles is $(1 - p)^{(1 + o(1))n}$. Finally, we discuss the complexity of calculating and approximating $\widetilde{\alpha}(G)$.

Abstract:Let $L$ be a set of positive integers. We call a (directed) graph $G$ an $L$\emph{-cycle graph} if all cycle lengths in $G$ belong to $L$. Let $c(L,n)$ be the maximum number of cycles possible in an $n$-vertex $L$-cycle graph (we use $\vec{c}(L,n)$ for the number of cycles in directed graphs). In the undirected case we show that for any fixed set $L$, we have $c(L,n)=\Theta_L(n^{\lfloor k/\ell \rfloor})$ where $k$ is the largest element of $L$ and $2\ell$ is the smallest even element of $L$ (if $L$ contains only odd elements, then $c(L,n)=\Theta_L(n)$ holds.) We also give a characterization of $L$-cycle graphs when $L$ is a single element. In the directed case we prove that for any fixed set $L$ we have $\vec{c}(L,n)=(1+o(1))(\frac{n-1}{k-1})^{k-1}$, where $k$ is the largest element of $L$. We determine the exact value of $\vec{c}(\{k\},n)$ for every $k$ and characterize all graphs attaining this maximum.

The maximum number of odd cycles in a planar graph

Abstract:How many copies of a fixed odd cycle, $C_{2m+1}$, can a planar graph contain? We answer this question asymptotically for $m\in\{2,3,4\}$ and prove a bound which is tight up to a factor of $3/2$ for all other values of $m$. This extends the prior results of Cox--Martin and Lv et al. on the analogous question for even cycles. Our bounds result from a reduction to the following maximum likelihood question: which probability mass $\mu$ on the edges of some clique maximizes the probability that $m$ edges sampled independently from $\mu$ form either a cycle or a path?

Abstract:We study a counting version of Cycle Double Cover Conjecture. We discuss why it is more interesting to count circuits (i.e., graphs isomorphic to Ck for some k ) instead of cycles (graphs with all degrees even). We give an almost‐exponential lower bound for graphs with a surface embedding of representativity at least 4. We also prove an exponential lower bound for planar graphs. We conjecture that any bridgeless cubic graph has at least 2n/2−1 circuit double covers and we show an infinite class of graphs for which this bound is tight.

On decomposition thresholds for odd-length cycles and other tripartite graphs

Abstract:An (edge) decomposition of a graph $G$ is a set of subgraphs of $G$ whose edge sets partition the edge set of $G$. Here we show, for each odd $\ell \geq 5$, that any graph $G$ of sufficiently large order $n$ with minimum degree at least $(\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{2\ell-4}+o(1))n$ has a decomposition into $\ell$-cycles if and only if $\ell$ divides $|E(G)|$ and each vertex of $G$ has even degree. This threshold cannot be improved beyond $\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{2\ell-2}$. It was previously shown that the thresholds approach $\frac{1}{2}$ as $\ell$ becomes large, but our thresholds do so significantly more rapidly. Our methods can be applied to tripartite graphs more generally and we also obtain some bounds for decomposition thresholds of other tripartite graphs.

Abstract:It is well-known that an undirected graph has no odd cycle if and only if it is bipartite. A less obvious, but similar result holds for directed graphs: a strongly connected digraph has no odd cycle if and only if it is bipartite. Can this result be further generalized to more general graphs such as edge-colored graphs? In this paper, we study this problem and show how to decide if there exists an odd properly colored cycle in a given edge-colored graph. As a by-product, we show how to detect if there is a perfect matching in a graph with even (or odd) number of edges in a given edge set.

Abstract:Abstract Erdős and Pósa proved in 1965 that there is a duality between the maximum size of a packing of cycles and the minimum size of a vertex set hitting all cycles. Such a duality does not hold if we restrict to odd cycles. However, in 1999, Reed proved an analogue for odd cycles by relaxing packing to half‐integral packing. We prove a far‐reaching generalisation of the theorem of Reed; if the edges of a graph are labelled by finitely many abelian groups, then there is a duality between the maximum size of a half‐integral packing of cycles whose values avoid a fixed finite set for each abelian group and the minimum size of a vertex set hitting all such cycles. A multitude of natural properties of cycles can be encoded in this setting, for example, cycles of length at least , cycles of length modulo , cycles intersecting a prescribed set of vertices at least times and cycles contained in given ‐homology classes in a graph embedded on a fixed surface. Our main result allows us to prove a duality theorem for cycles satisfying a fixed set of finitely many such properties.
