Abstract:Executive functions (EFs) in both regulatory and meta-cognitive contexts are important for a wide variety of children's daily activities, including play and learning. Despite the growing literature supporting the relationship between EF and language, few studies have focused on these links during everyday behaviours. Data were collected on 208 children from 6 to 12 years old of whom 89 were deaf children (55% female; M = 8;8; SD = 1;9) and 119 were typically hearing children (56% female, M = 8;9; SD = 1;5). Parents completed two inventories: to assess EFs and language proficiency. Parents of deaf children reported greater difficulties with EFs in daily activities than those of hearing children. Correlation analysis between EFs and language showed significant levels only in the deaf group, especially in relation to meta-cognitive EFs. The results are discussed in terms of the role of early parent–child interaction and the relevance of EFs for everyday conversational situations.

Language deprivation syndrome: a possible neurodevelopmental disorder with sociocultural origins

Abstract:Purpose: There is a need to better understand the epidemiological relationship between language development and psychiatric symptomatology. Language development can be particularly impacted by social factors-as seen in the developmental choices made for deaf children, which can create language deprivation. A possible mental health syndrome may be present in deaf patients with severe language deprivation. Methods: Electronic databases were searched to identify publications focusing on language development and mental health in the deaf population. Screening of relevant publications narrowed the search results to 35 publications. Results: Although there is very limited empirical evidence, there appears to be suggestions of a mental health syndrome by clinicians working with deaf patients. Possible features include language dysfluency, fund of knowledge deficits, and disruptions in thinking, mood, and/or behavior. Conclusion: The clinical specialty of deaf mental health appears to be struggling with a clinically observed phenomenon that has yet to be empirically investigated and defined within the DSM. Descriptions of patients within the clinical setting suggest a language deprivation syndrome. Language development experiences have an epidemiological relationship with psychiatric outcomes in deaf people. This requires more empirical attention and has implications for other populations with behavioral health disparities as well.
Visible Social Interactions Do Not Support the Development of False Belief Understanding in the Absence of Linguistic Input: Evidence from Deaf Adult Homesigners

Abstract:Congenitally deaf individuals exhibit enhanced visuospatial abilities relative to normally hearing individuals. An early example is the increased sensitivity of deaf signers to stimuli in the visual periphery (Neville and Lawson, 1987a). While these enhancements are robust and extend across a number of visual and spatial skills, they seem not to extend to other domains which could potentially build on these enhancements. For example, congenitally deaf children, in the absence of adequate language exposure and acquisition, do not develop typical social cognition skills as measured by traditional Theory of Mind tasks. These delays/deficits occur despite their presumed lifetime use of visuo-perceptual abilities to infer the intentions and behaviors of others (e.g., Pyers and Senghas, 2009; O'Reilly et al., 2014). In a series of studies, we explore the limits on the plasticity of visually based socio-cognitive abilities, from perspective taking to Theory of Mind/False Belief, in rarely studied individuals: deaf <i>adults</i> who have not acquired a conventional language (Homesigners). We compared Homesigners' performance to that of two other understudied groups in the same culture: Deaf signers of an emerging language (Cohort 1 of Nicaraguan Sign Language), and hearing speakers of Spanish with minimal schooling. We found that homesigners performed equivalently to both comparison groups with respect to several visual socio-cognitive abilities: Perspective Taking (Levels 1 and 2), adapted from Masangkay et al. (1974), and the False Photograph task, adapted from Leslie and Thaiss (1992). However, a lifetime of visuo-perceptual experiences (observing the behavior and interactions of others) did <i>not</i> support success on False Belief tasks, even when linguistic demands were minimized. Participants in the comparison groups outperformed the Homesigners, but did not universally pass the False Belief tasks. Our results suggest that while some of the social development achievements of young typically developing children may be dissociable from their linguistic experiences, language and/or educational experiences clearly scaffolds the transition into False Belief understanding. The lack of experience using a shared language cannot be overcome, even with the benefit of many years of observing others' behaviors and the potential neural reorganization and visuospatial enhancements resulting from deafness.

Egocentric language in deaf children

Abstract:Egocentric language is a generalization of Piaget's egocentric speech concept (1926/1969) investigated by Vygotsky (1962). Behaviors of eight children ages 2 to 5 years with profound congenital deafness were analyzed using six classes of egocentric language: motor reaction activity, silent lips articulation, murmur, oral-facial mimics, body expression, and vocalization. No child had received oral or sign language training. All attended videotaped play sessions. Events in which children engaged in "dialogue" with themselves or a toy, while pursuing a specific solution, were observed. Such extralinguistic behavior moves the thinking process toward problem solving like that of hearing children. Consequently, teachers should not interrupt when a deaf child is playing with or signing or vocalizing to a toy, because this behavior may be the manifestation of a reflexive moment and the generator of a decision process fundamental for cognitive development. Vocalization by a deaf child does not indicate willingness to speak; it merely manifests symbolic reasoning. Silent lips articulation and oral-facial mimics have the same effect and can also be interpreted.

Abstract:Decades of research have demonstrated that deaf children generally lag behind hearing peers in terms of academic achievement, and that lags in some areas may never be overcome fully. Hundreds of research and intervention studies have been aimed at improving the situation, but they have resulted in only limited progress. This paper examines cognitive functioning among deaf learners, describing and integrating research that indicates them to differ significantly from hearing learners in ways likely to affect learning. Findings demonstrating that deaf and hearing children differ in domains such as visual-spatial processing, memory, and executive functioning provide directions for both future research and practice. First, however, teachers and other professionals need to recognize that deaf children are not simply hearing children who cannot hear. Only then can teaching methods and materials fully accommodate their strengths and needs.
Associations Between Parent Mental State Language and Child Inhibitory Control in Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Abstract:Purpose: Children who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) are at increased risk for neurocognitive delays, which can have cascading effects on development. Associations between neurocognition and the content of parental language-specifically the use of mental state vocabulary-have been observed in typically hearing (TH) children. This study investigated the role of parental use of mental state language (e.g., vocabulary related to thought processes, desires, and emotions) in explaining variability in neurocognition in children who are D/HH. Method: Dyads of 62 TH and 69 D/HH children who wear hearing aids or cochlear implants (ages 3-8 years) and their primary parent were videorecorded during a 20-min play session. Specific mental state words used by parents were extracted. Child neurocognition (specifically, inhibitory control) was assessed using norm-referenced measures. Results: Parent use of mental state language predicted child inhibitory control differentially based on hearing status, with a significant relation in the D/HH but not the TH group. Mental state vocabulary related to cognition (e.g., "think," "know"), but not to desire (e.g., "want," "like") or emotion (e.g., "feel," "frustrated"), predicted child inhibitory control in the D/HH group. Finally, there was a significant relation between the use of first person, but not second or third person, mental state verbs (e.g., "I think") and child inhibitory control. Conclusions: Parental use of cognitive mental state vocabulary models language around thought processes, and parents' use of first-person referents models "self-talk." Modeling of these linguistic forms is likely foundational for developing self-regulation. Children who are D/HH often experience reduced auditory access and/or language delays and thus rely on high-quality parental language input for longer periods of development than their TH peers. Continued support from interventionists is indicated to coach parents to be high-quality models of more abstract, decontextualized language, supporting complex language development and inhibitory control in children who are D/HH.

Abstract:Findings from several studies have suggested that deaf children have difficulties with emotion identification and that these may impact upon social skills. The authors of these studies have typically attributed such problems to delayed language acquisition and/or opportunity to converse about personal experiences with other people (Peterson & Siegal, 1995, 1998). The current study aimed to investigate emotion identification in children with varying levels of deafness by specifically testing their ability to recognize perceptual aspects of emotions depicted in upright or inverted human and cartoon faces. The findings from the study showed that, in comparison with both chronological- and mental-age-matched controls, the deaf children were significantly worse at identifying emotions. However, like controls, their performance decreased when emotions were presented on the inverted faces, thus indexing a typical configural processing style. No differences were found across individuals with different levels of deafness or in those with and without signing family members. The results are supportive of poor emotional identification in hearing-impaired children and are discussed in relation to delays in language acquisition and intergroup differences in perceptual processing.

Abstract:Language provides a rich source of information about other people's thoughts and feelings. Consequently, delayed access to language may influence conceptual development in Theory of Mind (ToM). We use functional magnetic resonance imaging and behavioral tasks to study ToM development in child (n = 33, 4-12 years old) and adult (n = 36) fluent signers of American Sign Language (ASL), and characterize neural ToM responses during ASL and movie-viewing tasks. Participants include deaf children whose first exposure to ASL was delayed up to 7 years (n = 12). Neural responses to ToM stories (specifically, selectivity of the right temporo-parietal junction) in these children resembles responses previously observed in young children, who have similar linguistic experience, rather than those in age-matched native-signing children, who have similar biological maturation. Early linguistic experience may facilitate ToM development, via the development of a selective brain region for ToM.
Sustained attention, selective attention and cognitive control in deaf and hearing children

Abstract:Deaf children have been characterized as being impulsive, distractible, and unable to sustain attention. However, past research has tested deaf children born to hearing parents who are likely to have experienced language delays. The purpose of this study was to determine whether an absence of auditory input modulates attentional problems in deaf children with no delayed exposure to language. Two versions of a continuous performance test were administered to 37 deaf children born to Deaf parents and 60 hearing children, all aged 6-13 years. A vigilance task was used to measure sustained attention over the course of several minutes, and a distractibility test provided a measure of the ability to ignore task irrelevant information - selective attention. Both tasks provided assessments of cognitive control through analysis of commission errors. The deaf and hearing children did not differ on measures of sustained attention. However, younger deaf children were more distracted by task-irrelevant information in their peripheral visual field, and deaf children produced a higher number of commission errors in the selective attention task. It is argued that this is not likely to be an effect of audition on cognitive processing, but may rather reflect difficulty in endogenous control of reallocated visual attention resources stemming from early profound deafness.

Comparing Parent and Teacher Ratings of Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties in 5-year old Children who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing

Abstract:Children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) are at higher risk of developing mental health problems. This study reports on the parent and teacher ratings of emotional and behavioural difficulties (EBD) in 5-year old DHH children. It explores the similarities and differences between informants, and the risk and protective factors associated with parent and teacher-ratings of EBD. Parents and teachers of 224 DHH children completed questionnaires on children's EBD and functional auditory behaviour. Children completed standardised assessments of non-verbal cognitive and language abilities. On average, parent- and teacher-rated EBD were 0.42 and 0.20 standard deviations higher than typically developing children. Parents reported more behavioural problems (hyperactivity and conduct), whereas teachers reported poorer prosocial behaviour. Inter-rater correlations were generally low to moderate (0.29 to 0.50). Overall, children with additional disabilities, lower non-verbal cognitive ability, and poor functional auditory behaviour were at higher risk of EBD. Language ability was only a significant predictor of teacher-rated EBD for children with hearing aids but not cochlear implants. Differences in informant-ratings emphasize the need for a multi-informant approach to get a global perspective on the psychopathology of DHH children. The findings indicate that parents may need assistance with managing behavioural problems at home, and teachers should facilitate more opportunities to practice prosocial behaviour at school. Intervention efforts should focus on facilitating good functional listening skills, as this may in turn, improve the mental health of young DHH children.
Language not auditory experience is related to parent‐reported executive functioning in preschool‐aged deaf and hard‐of‐hearing children

Abstract:Much research has found disrupted executive functioning (EF) in deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children; while some theories emphasize the role of auditory deprivation, others posit delayed language experience as the primary cause. This study investigated the role of language and auditory experience in parent-reported EF for 123 preschool-aged children (Mage = 60.1 months, 53.7% female, 84.6% White). Comparisons between DHH and typically hearing children exposed to language from birth (spoken or signed) showed no significant differences in EF despite drastic differences in auditory input. Linear models demonstrated that earlier language exposure predicted better EF (β = .061–.341), while earlier auditory exposure did not. Few participants exhibited clinically significant executive dysfunction. Results support theories positing that language, not auditory experience, scaffolds EF development.

Abstract:The prevalence of psychiatric and psychosomatic diseases amongst patients who had become deaf in adolescence or in adult life due to otosclerosis was studied. This was to test the hypothesis that the deaf would be more susceptible to suffer from psychiatric disorders than control subjects. Assessment of 49 deaf patients who had a bilateral hearing loss of 40 dB or more and 40 control subjects who had a unilateral hearing loss of 40 dB or more by the Cornell Index N 2 Questionnaire and psychiatric interview showed psychiatric illness to be significantly more common in the deaf than in the control subjects. Amongst the deaf patients, depressive illness was found to be the predominant type of psychiatric illness. There was, however, no significant difference in the prevalence of psychosomatic disorders between the two groups. The relationship of psychiatric illness in the deaf and such factors as positive psychiatric family history, the severity of deafness, living alone, duration of deafness were investigated. On the basis of the findings of this study, the significance of deafness as a psychological precipitant is discussed.

Abstract:Research on brain plasticity, particularly in the context of deafness, consistently emphasizes the reorganization of the auditory cortex. However, a critical question arises: to what extent do all individuals with deafness show the same level of reorganization? To address this question, we examined the individual differences in deafness functional connectivity (FC), specifically from the deprived auditory cortex. Our findings demonstrate a remarkable differentiation between individuals deriving from the absence of shared auditory experiences, resulting in heightened FC variability among deaf individuals, compared to more consistent FC in the hearing group. Notably, connectivity to language regions becomes more diverse across individuals in deafness. This does not stem from delayed language acquisition, as it is found in deaf native signers, who are exposed to rich natural language since birth. However, comparing FC diversity between deaf native signers and deaf delayed signers who were deprived of language in early development, we show that language experience also impacts individual differences, although to a more moderate extent. Overall, our research points out the intricate interplay between brain plasticity and individual differences, shedding light on the diverse ways reorganization manifests among individuals. It further joins findings in blindness, showing that individual differences are affected by sensory experience. Finally, these findings highlight the importance of considering individual differences in personalized rehabilitation for hearing loss.

Peer interaction in young deaf children: The effect of partner hearing status and familiarity.

Abstract:The present study had two major objectives: (a) to explore the role of language in peer interaction and play of deaf children and (b) to examine the effect of three partner characteristics (hearing status, familiarity, and experience) on dyadic interaction of deaf children. Fourteen deaf 5- to 6-year-olds were videotaped playing once with each of four partners: a familiar deaf playmate, a familiar hearing playmate, an unfamiliar hearing child who was a playmate of another deaf child, and an unfamiliar hearing child who had little experience playing with deaf children. Formal language did not seem to play a major role in the deaf children's peer interaction: they rarely used language, and formal language use was not related to measures of interaction or play even when playing with another deaf child. Instead, interaction and pretense seemed to be related to the deaf children's nonlinguistic communication abilities. Two partner characteristics affected interaction. Partner hearing status primarily affected communication, with communication between deaf playmates more visual (both linguistic and nonlinguistic) and less object-based than communication between deaf and hearing playmates. Comparisons among the deaf-hearing dyads indicated that familiarity played a larger role than experience in improving interaction between deaf and hearing children. The hearing children were more responsive to and used more visual communication devices with their deaf playmate than an unfamiliar deaf child. But the hearing playmates were no better at playing with an unfamiliar deaf child than were hearing children who had little experience playing with deaf children. Implications for our understanding of young children's communication abilities and for deaf educational programs are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract— Many of the photophysical properties of riboflavin and several other N‐10 substituted isoal‐loxazines have been measured and these include: quantum yields of fluorescence at 77 K and 298 K, φ, quantum yields of phosphorescence at 77 K, φP, lifetimes of the triplet state by electron spin resonance and phosphorescence at 77 K, φp,. and the quantum yield of intersystem crossing. φisc. For riboflavin in an alcoholic matrix at 77 K the limiting values were: φJ= 0.32, φP= 0.007, φp= 0.20s and φisc= 0.7. At 298 K, φf for riboflavin in water and alcohol were 0.25 and 0.32, respectively. The results for the photophysical processes are compared with several photochemical processes known to involve the triplet state of riboflavin in aqueous solution. It is concluded that the φisc decreases from 0.7 in alcohol to 0.6 in water at 298 K.
Executive Functioning, Affective Misappraisals and Parenting Risk: Pathways within Disadvantaged Mother-Child Dyads

Abstract:Research examining cognitive models of parenting risk has linked poorer parental executive functioning capacities to increased risk for poor parenting outcomes including use of harsh discipline and problematic patterns of parent-child interaction. To better inform intervention and prevention efforts targeting parenting risk, there is a need to further articulate this association by identifying intermediaries between parents' executive functioning capacities and parenting behavior. Social-cognitive models of parenting risk suggest that one such intervening factor is parents' ability to form accurate appraisals during social situations, including accurate appraisals of others' affect. We tested this assertion by examining the extent to which mothers' accuracy for recognizing affect, presented in both auditory and visual modalities, explained associations between mothers' executive functioning capacities and two indicators of parenting risk: maladaptive discipline responses and dyssynchronous patterns of parent-child interaction. Associations were tested among 95 mother-preschooler (48.4% female; average age 4.94 years) dyads, 31 of whom had histories of maternal perpetration of child neglect. Mothers exhibited high levels of social (92.6% non-White; average of 11.51 years of education; 65.3% single parents) and economic disadvantage (median family income of $19,000). Consistent with prior research, we found associations between lower maternal executive functioning capacities and higher levels of parenting risk. Using Hayes' PROCESS Macro, we found that mothers' affective misappraisals partially explained these associations although findings differed by sensory modality. Our findings suggest that poorer maternal executive functioning capacities contribute to inaccurate affect identification, which in turn may lead to maladaptive patterns of parent-child interaction and inappropriate discipline responses.

Abstract:Within the intricate matrices of cognitive neuroscience, auditory deprivation acts as a catalyst, propelling a cascade of neuroanatomical adjustments that have, until now, been suboptimally articulated in extant literature. Addressing this gap, our study harnesses high resolution 3T MRI modalities to unveil the multifaceted cortical transformations that emerge in tandem with congenital auditory deficits. We conducted a rigorous cortical surface analysis on a cohort of 90 congenitally deaf individuals, systematically compared to 90 normoacoustic controls. Our sample encompassed both male and female participants, ensuring a gender-inclusive perspective in our analysis. Expected alterations within prototypical auditory domains were evident, but our findings transcended these regions, spotlighting modifications dispersed across a gamut of cortical and subcortical structures, thereby epitomizing the cerebral adaptive dynamics to sensory voids. Crucially, the study's innovative methodology integrated two pivotal variables: the duration of auditory deprivation and the extent of sign language immersion. By intersecting these metrics with structural changes, our analysis unveiled nuanced layers of cortical reconfigurations, elucidating a more granulated understanding of neural plasticity. By harnessing advanced neuroimaging techniques, distinct neurotopographic deviations were discerned, spanning Fractal Dimension, gyrification, sulcal depth, and cortical thickness. Our data spotlighted the profound intersections between the duration of deafness and cerebral alterations, as well as the sculpting impact of extended sign language immersion on brain architecture. Abstract:In recent years there has been a growing interest in research about the different ways of processing and consolidating cognition in deaf people. It is known that hearing loss can lead to differences in some executive functions like control inhibitory or working memory. This literature review describes executive functions in deaf people and how they could be evaluated through technological devices complementing traditional assessments, like neuropsychological batteries. We identified biometric devices, digital and physical interfaces, and software from the literature, whose goal is to design or adapt technology to assess some cognition domains in several ways. The results of the review suggest the need to understand the cognitive phenomenon that significantly impacts the context of deaf people; moreover, it becomes relevant as a line of research in the Cognitive Science of Hearing. Using technologies to measure them and gain a better understanding of cognition in deaf people may provide possibilities for designing or adapting targeted educational or therapeutic strategies.

Abstract:Background: Children with hearing loss have been found to have significantly more behavioral and emotional challenges than their typically hearing peers, though these outcomes are variable at the individual level. Working memory deficits have been found to relate to executive functioning and overall emotion regulation, leading to behavior challenges. Language development is essential for development of social relationships and communicating one's needs and this may lead to distress when children cannot communicate effectively. Based on prior findings in children with hearing loss and their typically hearing peers, working memory and language skills were hypothesized to be related to parent and teacher report of socio-emotional functioning. Methods: Participants were 35 children with hearing loss (66% female, M = 5.17 years old, SD = ±1.97) whose language, working memory, and socio-emotional functioning were evaluated during the course of treatment and educational planning. Results: Bivariate analyses indicated that working memory was related to a number of socio-emotional domains (e.g., functional communication, atypicality, withdrawal), as were language scores (e.g., social skills, inattention). The direction of these associations was such that stronger working memory and language skills were related to more regulated socio-emotional functioning. Conclusions: This study is limited in generalizability by size and the relative homogeneity of the sample. A call to action of the current study includes more education with regard to profiles and presentations of children with hearing loss, and an early focus on socio-emotional learning to foster the development of regulatory skills.

Abstract:Research indicates that deaf children can have marked social difficulties compared with their hearing peers. Factors that influence these social interactions need to be reviewed to inform interventions. A systematic search of 5 key databases and 3 specialized journals identified 14 papers that met the inclusion criteria. Methodological quality of the articles was assessed using an adapted checklist. There was a general lack of consensus across studies. The main factors investigated were the deaf child's communication competency, age, and level of mainstreaming, which overall were positively associated with peer interactions. Some studies also found that females were more likely to have positive social interactions. The majority of studies were cross-sectional. Some studies lacked appropriate control groups and did not recruit an appropriate range of informants. A wide range of factors were associated with social interactions between deaf and hearing children. The role of communication gained the highest consensus across studies. Other factors were involved in more complex interactions.
