Abstract:Depletion beams with long pulse durations (∼600ps) have recently been applied in stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy to reduce photobleaching and phototoxicity. Therefore, improving the resolution of pulse STED at lower depletion power for the super-resolution imaging of live biological specimens has attracted increasing interest. Herein, we present a simple method termed ratiometric photon reassignment based on the fluorescence lifetime, in which highly spatially resolved long-lifetime fluorophore components in the center are extracted, and short-lifetime fluorophore components in the periphery are discarded to improve resolution without increasing the depletion power. The experimental results demonstrate improved resolution and signal-to-noise ratio compared with traditional time-gated STED. Our proposed method requires lower budget and data processing because, in contrast to the separation of photons by lifetime tuning), lifetime measurements are not required.

Abstract:Slow light is a fascinating physical effect, raising fundamental questions related to our understanding of light-matter interactions as well as offering new possibilities for photonic devices. From the first demonstrations of slow light propagation in ultra-cold atomic gasses, solid-state Ruby and photonic crystal structures, focus has shifted to applications, with slow light offering the ability to enhance and control light-matter interactions. The demonstration of tuneable delay lines, enhanced nonlinearities and spontaneous emission, enlarged spectral sensitivity and increased phase shifts illustrate the possibilities enabled by slow light propagation, with microwave photonics emerging as one of the promising applications. Here, we demonstrate that slow light can be used to control and increase the gain coefficient of an active semiconductor waveguide. The effect was theoretically predicted but not yet experimentally demonstrated. These results show a route towards realizing ultra-compact optical amplifiers for linear and nonlinear applications in integrated photonics and prompts further research into the rich physics of such structures.

Abstract:Slow light has been explored for building quantum networks, with particular interest in slowing the group velocity of single photons [1], and more recently exploited to enhance the measurement of small phase shifts. Generally, slow-light effects have been characterized as the net effect of a pulse propagating through the slow-light medium, i.e., as a pulse delay time $\Delta t$ measured with a fast photodiode at the output of the medium [2]. In this work, we use a single-photon imaging camera to observe slow light in situ, and thus provide a direct measurement of spatial pulse compression and temporal dispersion as the pulse travels through the slow light medium, in this case a hyperfine absorption doublet in hot Rb vapor. Our method combines light-in-flight imaging techniques with a camera comprised of an array of single-photon avalanche diodes (SPAD camera) [3] to image the photons scattered by the Rb vapor in the direction of the camera as shown in Fig. 1(a). In addition, the single photon nature of the SPAD detector allows us to obtain a measurement of the single photon group velocity. As shown in Fig. 1(c) and (d), we observe a significant delay, on the order of nanoseconds, in the detection of the photons scattered when the pulse first enters the slow-light medium. This lag in scattered-photon arrival time is a direct visualization of the slowing down of the single-photon group velocity. The pulses used here had a temporal full width at half maximum (FWHM) of $\tau\sim 1$ ns, with measured group velocities as low as $v_{g}\sim 0.006c$. At these low group velocities we observe a full fractional pulse delay of up to $FD=\Delta t/\tau\sim 40$ over 7 cm of propagation, and $FD\sim 5$ for the scattered single photons, which propagate through ∼ 1 cm of Rb vapor prior to exiting the cell en-route to the camera.

Abstract:Optical microcavities with ultralong photon storage times are of central importance for integrated nanophotonics. To date, record quality (Q) factors up to 10^{11} have been measured in millimetric-size single-crystal whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) resonators, and 10^{10} in silica or glass microresonators. We show that, by introducing slow-light effects in an active WGM microresonator, it is possible to enhance the photon lifetime by several orders of magnitude, thus circumventing both fabrication imperfections and residual absorption. The slow-light effect is obtained from coherent population oscillations in an erbium-doped fluoride glass microsphere, producing strong dispersion of the WGM (group index n_{g}∼10^{6}). As a result, a photon lifetime up to 2.5 ms at room temperature has been measured, corresponding to a Q factor of 3×10^{12} at 1530 nm. This system could yield a new type of optical memory microarray with ultralong storage times.

Abstract:Slow light of four different pulses are demonstrated and analyzed in cesium vapor based on electromagnetically induced transparency. Each pulse, generated with an identical temporal width, experiences very different slow light effects due to its temporal and spectral distributions simultaneously. Aiming at the applications such as timing, instead of communication, we obtained two optimized ones among the four different shaped pulses. Firstly, the single-exponential pulse is more appropriate to maximize the time delay than other three pulses; secondly, the cosine pulse shows advantage to minimize the distortion (broadening) of the slowed pulse. Finally, using optical filter model, we present a convenient simulation method in theory; moreover, the theoretical results show excellent agreement with experiments.
High-fidelity, broadband stimulated-Brillouin-scattering-based slow light using fast noise modulation

Abstract:We demonstrate a 5-GHz-broadband tunable slow-light device based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in a standard highly-nonlinear optical fiber pumped by a noise-current-modulated laser beam. The noise modulation waveform uses an optimized pseudo-random distribution of the laser drive voltage to obtain an optimal flat-topped gain profile, which minimizes the pulse distortion and maximizes pulse delay for a given pump power. Eye-diagram and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis show that this new broadband slow-light technique significantly increases the fidelity of a delayed data sequence, while maintaining the delay performance. A fractional delay of 0.81 with a SNR of 5.2 is achieved at the pump power of 350 mW using a 2-km-long highly nonlinear fiber with the fast noise-modulation method, demonstrating a 50% increase in eye-opening and a 36% increase in SNR compared to a previous slow-modulation method.

Abstract:A driving force in the rapidly developing field of photonic crystals has been the photonic bandgap, a range of energies where the propagation of light is completely forbidden. The photonic bandgap allows the design of photonic lattices that localize, guide and bend light at sub-micron length scales, providing opportunities for the creation of miniature optical devices and integrated optical circuits to help drive the revolution in photonics. A less well known attribute of photonic crystals is their theoretical ability to slow light to a velocity of zero. This phenomenon can be achieved at the high and low energy edges of photonic stopgaps where the photonic bands are flat and light exists as a standing wave commensurate with the photonic lattice and travels at a group velocity of zero, referred to as “slow photons” herein. It has been shown theoretically that the probability of harvesting slow photons scales inversely with their group velocity. This means that a number of well known photon driven processes and devices in chemistry and physics can be enhanced by capturing this unique property of slow photons. In this paper we will look at slow photons mainly through the eye of chemistry and highlight some recent developments in this exciting and emerging field that demonstrate the potential of slow photons in materials chemistry and nanochemistry.

Abstract:Photon echo is a fundamental tool for the manipulation of electromagnetic fields. Unavoidable spontaneous emission noise is generated in this process due to the strong rephasing pulse, which limits the achievable signal-to-noise ratio and represents a fundamental obstacle towards their applications in the quantum regime. Here we propose a noiseless photon-echo protocol based on a four-level atomic system. We implement this protocol in a Eu 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 crystal to serve as an optical quantum memory. A storage fidelity of 0.952 ± 0.018 is obtained for time-bin qubits encoded with single-photon-level coherent pulses, which is far beyond the maximal fidelity achievable using the classical measure-and-prepare strategy. In this work, the demonstrated noiseless photon-echo quantum memory features spin-wave storage, easy operation and high storage fidelity, which should be easily extended to other physical systems.

Abstract:A critical review of experimental studies of the so-called 'slow light' arising due to anomalously high steepness of the refractive index dispersion under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency or coherent population oscillations is presented. It is shown that a considerable amount of experimental evidence for observation of the 'slow light' is not related to the low group velocity of light and can be easily interpreted in terms of a standard model of interaction of light with a saturable absorber.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Slow light has achieved great progress in waveguide and fibers in room temperature, which could be accelerating the transition of this technique to applications. This talk will review devising methods for tailoring the dispersion of optical materials, such as electromagnetically induced transparency, photonic crystals, and nano-optic resonators over the last decade. And the potential applications of slow light for optical buffering, data synchronization, optical memories, and optical signal processing will be cataloged. Then the interaction between slow light and Sagnac effect is discussed. The concept of the Sagnac effect in a slow-light medium and resonator structure with high group dispersion is investigated. It is found that a slow-light medium can be utilized for relative motion sensing, and a slow-light resonator structure is suitable to detect absolute rotation for navigation purposes. It is noted that the high group dispersion leads to a huge enhancement of the rotation sensor's sensitivity in a resonating structure, and an approach to evaluate and design resonator devices with slow-light property is proposed. Moreover, a folded loop-lattice-based structure is numerically simulated to verify the concept.
Photon echo in exciton-plasmon nanomaterials: a time-dependent signature of strong coupling

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of photon echo exhibited by exciton-plasmon systems under strong coupling conditions. Using a self-consistent model based on coupled Maxwell-Bloch equations we investigate femtosecond time dynamics of ensembles of interacting molecules optically coupled to surface plasmon supporting materials. It is shown that observed photon echoes under two pulse pump-probe sequence are highly dependent on various material parameters such as molecular concentration and periodicity. Simulations of photon echoes in exciton-plasmon materials reveal a unique signature of the strong exciton-plasmon coupling, namely a double-peak structure in spectra of recorded echo signals. This phenomenon is shown to be related to hybrid states (upper and lower polaritons) in exciton-plasmon systems under strong coupling conditions. It is also demonstrated that the double-peak echo is highly sensitive to mild deviations of the coupling from resonant conditions making it a great tool for ultrafast probes.

Abstract:Slow light based on four-wave mixing (FWM) wavelength conversion and dispersion is experimentally studied. The FWM bandwidth of the highly nonlinear fiber is measured to be 40 nm, which is also the slow light tunable bandwidth. A 34 ns delay of 500 MHz sine signal is achieved in standard single mode fiber, and 198 ns delay of short pulses with 100 ps width is achieved in dispersion compensation fiber (DCF). An advancement of 209 ns for the 100 ps short pulses is also achieved in the DCF. The method to increase the slow light delay is discussed, and large delay up to microseconds is expected when wideband FWM wavelength conversion and large dispersion fibers are used. The expected large delay will help us realize high efficiency fiber delay lines and all-fiber buffers.

Abstract:We show that the photonic angular momentum states (AMSs) in metamaterials can be utilized to achieve slow light. The photonic AMS possesses a helical phase, the orbital-angular-momentum degree of freedom in photons. Unlike the traditional slow-light schemes in metamaterials by using orthogonal polarizations, the photonic AMSs are dipole forbidden for all polarizations of free-space radiation due to the existence of helical phase. Numerical simulation for a metamaterial design proves the feasibility of this scheme, in which the indirectly excitation of dark photonic AMSs burns some transmission dips in the otherwise high transmission window. With the unique merits of dark photonic AMSs, this slow light scheme can realize a high group index $n_g$ greater than $\sim500$.
Broadband SBS Slow Light in an Optical Fiber

Abstract:We investigate slow-light via stimulated Brillouin scattering in a room temperature optical fiber that is pumped by a spectrally broadened laser. Broadening the spectrum of the pump field increases the linewidth $\Delta\omega_p$ of the Stokes amplifying resonance, thereby increasing the slow-light bandwidth. One physical bandwidth limitation occurs when the linewidth becomes several times larger than the Brillouin frequency shift $\Omega_B$ so that the anti-Stokes absorbing resonance cancels out substantially the Stokes amplifying resonance and hence the slow-light effect. We find that partial overlap of the Stokes and anti-Stokes resonances can actually lead to an enhancement of the slow-light delay - bandwidth product when $\Delta\omega_p \simeq 1.3 \Omega_B$. Using this general approach, we increase the Brillouin slow-light bandwidth to over 12 GHz from its nominal linewidth of $\sim$30 MHz obtained for monochromatic pumping. We controllably delay 75-ps-long pulses by up to 47 ps and study the data pattern dependence of the broadband SBS slow-light system.

Abstract:Photon echo schemes are excellent candidates for high efficiency coherent optical memory. They are capable of high-bandwidth multi-pulse storage, pulse resequencing and have been shown theoretically to be compatible with quantum information applications. One particular photon echo scheme is the gradient echo memory (GEM). In this system, an atomic frequency gradient is induced in the direction of light propagation leading to a Fourier decomposition of the optical spectrum along the length of the storage medium. This Fourier encoding allows precision spectral manipulation of the stored light. In this letter, we show frequency shifting, spectral compression, spectral splitting, and fine dispersion control of optical pulses using GEM.

Abstract:Simultaneous slow and fast light can be realized all-optically by connecting a four-level closed-loop atom–light interaction scheme to Λ-type electromagnetically induced transparency system. Through manipulation of the relative phase of one of the coupling lights, probe light can be switched among dual-slow light, dual-fast light and simultaneous slow and fast light. A theoretical analysis based on dressed state picture is given.

Abstract:The problem of slowing down light by orders of magnitude has been extensively discussed in the literature. Such a possibility can be useful in a variety of optical and microwave applications. Many qualitatively different approaches have been explored. Here we discuss how this goal can be achieved in linear dispersive media, such as photonic crystals. The existence of slowly propagating electromagnetic waves in photonic crystals is quite obvious and well known. The main problem, though, has been how to convert the input radiation into the slow mode without loosing a significant portion of the incident light energy to absorption, reflection, etc. We show that the so-called frozen mode regime offers a unique solution to the above problem. Under the frozen mode regime, the incident light enters the photonic crystal with little reflection and, subsequently, is completely converted into the frozen mode with huge amplitude and almost zero group velocity. The linearity of the above effect allows to slow light regardless of its intensity. An additional advantage of photonic crystals over other methods of slowing down light is that photonic crystals can preserve both time and space coherence of the input electromagnetic wave.

Abstract:Solar light is widely recognized as one of the most valuable renewable energy sources for the future. However, the development of solar-energy technologies is severely hindered by poor energy-conversion efficiencies due to low optical-absorption coefficients and low quantum-conversion yield of current-generation materials. Huge efforts have been devoted to investigating new strategies to improve the utilization of solar energy. Different chemical and physical strategies have been used to extend the spectral range or increase the conversion efficiency of materials, leading to very promising results. However, these methods have now begun to reach their limits. What is therefore the next big concept that could efficiently be used to enhance light harvesting? Despite its discovery many years ago, with the potential for becoming a powerful tool for enhanced light harvesting, the slow-photon effect, a manifestation of light-propagation control due to photonic structures, has largely been overlooked. This review presents theoretical as well as experimental progress on this effect, revealing that the photoreactivity of materials can be dramatically enhanced by exploiting slow photons. It is predicted that successful implementation of this strategy may open a very promising avenue for a broad spectrum of light-energy-conversion technologies.
