Abstract:Molecular plasmonics, the area which deals with the interactions between surface plasmons and molecules, has received enormous interest in fundamental research and found numerous technological applications. Plasmonic metamaterials, which offer rich opportunities to control the light intensity, field polarization, and local density of electromagnetic states on subwavelength scales, provide a versatile platform to enhance and tune light-molecule interactions. A variety of applications, including spontaneous emission enhancement, optical modulation, optical sensing, and photoactuated nanochemistry, have been reported by exploiting molecular interactions with plasmonic metamaterials. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of the developments of molecular plasmonics with metamaterials. After a brief introduction to the optical properties of plasmonic metamaterials and relevant fabrication approaches, we discuss light-molecule interactions in plasmonic metamaterials in both weak and strong coupling regimes. We then highlight the exploitation of molecules in metamaterials for applications ranging from emission control and optical modulation to optical sensing. The role of hot carriers generated in metamaterials for nanochemistry is also discussed. Perspectives on the future development of molecular plasmonics with metamaterials conclude the review. The use of molecules in combination with designer metamaterials provides a rich playground both to actively control metamaterials using molecular interactions and, in turn, to use metamaterials to control molecular processes.

Abstract:Manipulating light is highly desired in photonics research. Restricted by the variable range of permittivity for natural materials, conventional photonic elements are often optically thick and their light-manipulation abilities are quite limited by chemical composition. Plasmonic metamaterials are artificial composite by sub-wavelength local resonance structures of electric and/or magnetic type with novel electromagnetic property such as negative refraction and perfect lens, etc. [1, 2]. Recently, ultra-thin metasurfaces with abrupt-varying material properties provided by the geometries of metallic nanostructures on the interface were found to exhibit boardband light-manipulation abilities [3- 5].

Abstract:Plasmonics and metamaterials have attracted considerable attention over the past decade, owing to the revolutionary impacts that they bring to both the fundamental physics and practical applications in multiple disciplines. Although the two fields initially advanced along their individual trajectories in parallel, they started to interfere with each other when metamaterials reached the optical regime. The dynamic interplay between plasmonics and metamaterials has generated a number of innovative concepts and approaches, which are impossible with either area alone. This review presents the fundamentals, recent advances and future perspectives in the emerging field of plasmonic metamaterials, aiming to open up new exciting opportunities for nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Abstract:The ability to engineer the optical response of a plasmonic nano-object is highly desired to achieve better control over light-matter interactions. Due to the sensitivity of plasmon resonances to the surrounding media, isotropic dielectric coating is an easy approach to modify the optical properties of a plasmonic nanostructure. However, the choice of coatings and the provided tunability is limited by the range of refractive indices of available materials. Here, it is shown that coating of plasmonic nano-objects with an anisotropic metamaterial, which displays a hyperbolic dispersion and allows the design of refractive index on demand, provides greater flexibility in engineering their interaction with light. This is experimentally demonstrated by coating Au nanospheres with alternating SiO2 and Au multishells. This creates rich and highly tunable plasmonic modes covering a broad wavelength range (approximate to 400-2200nm) and produces high local field intensity enhancement (approximate to 500-fold). The concept is extended to hyperbolic coating of dielectric nano-objects, confirming the nature of the modes to be related to the resonances in the hyperbolic layer. The implemented approach using a coating with an engineered effective refractive index may find applications in plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy, nanolasers, design of nonlinear phenomena, photothermal conversions, and hot-electron generation.

Abstract:Colloidal metasurfaces are emerging as promising candidates for the development of functional chemical metamaterials, combining the undisputed control over crystallography and surface chemistry achieved by synthetic nanochemistry with the scalability and versatility of colloidal self‐assembly strategies. In light of recent reports of colloidal plasmonic materials displaying high‐performing optical cavities, this Minireview discusses the use of this type of metamaterials in the specific context of non‐linear optical phenomena and non‐linear molecular spectroscopies. Our attention is focused on the opportunities and advantages that colloidal nanoparticles and self‐assembled plasmonic metasurfaces can bring to the table compared to more traditional nanofabrication strategies. Specifically, we believe that future work in this direction will express the full potential of non‐linear molecular spectroscopies to explore the chemical space, with a deeper understanding of plasmon‐molecule dynamics, plasmon‐mediated processes, and surface‐enhanced chemistry.

Plasmonic and Dielectric Metasurfaces: Design, Fabrication and Applications

Abstract:Two-dimensional metasurfaces are widely focused on for their ability for flexible light manipulation (phase, amplitude, polarization) over sub-wavelength propagation distances. Most of the metasurfaces can be divided into two categories by the material type of unit structure, i.e., plasmonic metasurfaces and dielectric metasurfaces. For plasmonic metasurfaces, they are made on the basis of metallic meta-atoms whose optical responses are driven by the plasmon resonances supported by metallic particles. For dielectric metasurfaces, the unit structure is constructed with high refractive index dielectric resonators, such as silicon, germanium or tellurium, which can support electric and magnetic dipole responses based on Mie resonances. The responses of plasmonic and dielectric metasurfaces are all relevant to the characteristics of unit structure, such as dimensions and materials. One can manipulate the electromagnetic field of light wave scattered by the metasurfaces through designing the dimension parameters of each unit structure in the metasurfaces. In this review article, we give a brief overview of our recent progress in plasmonic and dielectric metasurface-assisted nanophotonic devices and their design, fabrication and applications, including the metasurface-based broadband and the selective generation of orbital angular momentum (OAM) carrying vector beams, N-fold OAM multicasting using a V-shaped antenna array, a metasurface on conventional optical fiber facet for linearly-polarized mode (LP11) generation, graphene split-ring metasurface-assisted terahertz coherent perfect absorption, OAM beam generation using a nanophotonic dielectric metasurface array, as well as Bessel beam generation and OAM multicasting using a dielectric metasurface array. It is believed that metasurface-based nanophotonic devices are one of the devices with the most potential applied in various fields, such as beam steering, spatial light modulator, nanoscale-resolution imaging, sensing, quantum optics devices and even optical communication networks.

Abstract:Hybrid metasurfaces of plasmonic lattices and 2D materials provide a versatile platform for both fundamental and practical studies because of their unprecedented ability for precise manipulation of light at the nanoscale. This review summarizes how the structure design and nanofabrication led to application advances of enhanced photoluminescence, quantum emission, optoelectronic detection, nonlinear process, and valleytronics in hybrid metasurfaces. Plasmonic metasurfaces can significantly enhance the interaction between light and 2D materials. Hybrid structures of plasmonic lattices and 2D materials show great promise for both fundamental and practical studies because of their unprecedented ability for precise manipulation of light at the nanoscale. This review starts with an overview of the basic concepts of plasmonic lattices and optical properties of 2D materials, as well as fabrication strategies for hybrid metasurfaces. Then, the enhanced photoluminescence, quantum emission, optoelectronic detection, nonlinear process, and valleytronics in hybrid metasurfaces are summarized, and their development for nanophotonic functional devices are reviewed. Further, several compelling topics are also outlined that provide outlooks for future directions of hybrid metasurfaces such as novel structural design and high‐quality fabrication, all‐dielectric metasurfaces, dynamic metasurfaces, and plasmonic mediation of chemical reactions and physical processes. It is believed that hybrid metasurfaces of plasmonic lattices and 2D materials can open prospects for versatile platforms for light‐matter interactions and contribute to the revolutions on nanophotonic devices.

Abstract:Metasurfaces in metal/insulator/metal configuration have recently been widely used in photonics research, with applications ranging from perfect absorption to phase modulation [1, 2], but why and when such structures can realize what kinds of functionalities are not fully understood. Here, based on coupled-model analysis, we establish a complete phase diagram for such systems, in which their optical properties are fully controlled by two simple parameters ( the intrinsic and radiation losses), which are in turn, intimately related to the geometrical/material parameters of the underlying structure. These results can guide one to design appropriate metasurfaces with tailored functionalities (e.g., perfect absorption, phase modulator, electric/magnetic reflector, etc.), which are demonstrated by our experiments and simulations in the Terahertz regime.
Near- and Far-Field Excitation of Topological Plasmonic Metasurfaces

Abstract:The breathing honeycomb lattice hosts a topologically non-trivial bulk phase due to the crystalline-symmetry of the system. Pseudospin-dependent edge states, which emerge at the interface between trivial and non-trivial regions, can be used for the directional propagation of energy. Using the plasmonic metasurface as an example system, we probe these states in the near- and far-field using a semi-analytical model. We provide the conditions under which directionality was observed and show that it is source position dependent. By probing with circularly-polarised magnetic dipoles out of the plane, we first characterise modes along the interface in terms of the enhancement of source emissions due to the metasurface. We then excite from the far-field with non-zero orbital angular momentum beams. The position-dependent directionality holds true for all classical wave systems with a breathing honeycomb lattice. Our results show that a metasurface in combination with a chiral two-dimensional material, could be used to guide light effectively on the nanoscale.

Anapole plasmonic meta-atom enabled by inverse design for metamaterials transparency

Abstract:Anapole states are broadly investigated in nanophotonics for their ability to provide field enhancement and transparency. While low extinction has been achieved in dielectric nanoparticles due to the absence of intrinsic losses, in the case of plasmonic nanostructures this is still lacking. Here, we report an easy-to-fabricate planar plasmonic nanostructure found via topology optimization, which exhibits an anapole state with close-to-ideal characteristics in the visible regime including weak absorption, high near-field enhancment, and strong suppression of scattering. The nanonantenna can act as an individual meta-atom because, due to low inter-coupling, it preserves its optical response even when used in highly packed metasurfaces and metamaterials. The low losses are due to the optimized topology which provides concentration of the field outside the structure with minimum penetration inside the metal. Compared to anapole states in dielectric structures, the accessibility of the volume of enhanced field is suitable for sensing applications. Anapole states are typically interpreted as the result of the interference between electric and toroidal dipole moments. Here and based on a novel approach, in the context of secondary multipole analysis, we introduce the concept of anapole state without using the contribution of toroidal dipole moments. The article provides new insight into anapoles in plasmonic nanostructures and ways to achieve them, while remarking the power of topology optimization to unlock designs with novel functionalities.

Abstract:The electromagnetic response of metamaterial can be managed by combining resonances and interferences of different materials and on different lengths scales. In our contribution we study composite metamaterials containing resonant plasmonic metallic nanoparticles that show organization. The material bases its non-conventional properties on short distance self-organization by mesogens that form a liquid crystal material. We analyze the properties of such materials with a structural model containing organized nanoparticles. Theoretically insight of the electromagnetic properties is provided and we give details on their optical properties.

Abstract:A new configuration for metasurface construction is presented to achieve multi-functional capabilities including perfect absorption, bio/chem sensing, and surface-mode lasing. The reciprocal plasmonic metasurfaces discussed here are composed of two plasmonic surfaces of reciprocal geometries separated by a dielectric spacer. Compared to conventional metasurfaces this simple geometry exhibits an enhanced optical performance. The discussed reciprocal metasurface design further enables effective structural optimization and allows for a simple and scalable fabrication. The physical principle and potential applications of the reciprocal plasmonic metasurfaces are demonstrated using numerical and analytical approaches.

Abstract:Plasmonic phenomena, such as surface plasmon polariton (SPP) and the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), occur in structures that involve materials with negative permittivity (i.e., epsilon-negative (ENG) media). In the infrared and visible regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, materials with ENG properties are available. The examples include noble metals such as Ag and Au, transparent conducting oxides (TCO) such as indium tin oxide (ITO), and silicon carbide (SiC). However, in the low frequency regimes such as radio frequency (RF) and microwaves metals behave effectively as very good (and approximately perfect) conductors. Therefore, effects related to the plasmonic optics may not be naturally observable in the RF and microwave domains. Nevertheless, it is possible to engineer microwave metamaterials with plasmonic properties. One of the methods is the use of structural dispersion in the guided-wave structures [C. Della Giovampaola and N. Engheta, “Waveguide Metamaterials”, presented at the 7th International Congress on Advanced Electromagnetic Materials in Microwave and Optics (Metamaterials 2013), Bordeaux, France, September 16–21, 2013). Using this technique, in our earlier work we showed how one could achieve some of the plasmonic features, e.g., SPP, cloaking, ENZ, and related effects using materials all with positive permittivity functions.
Plasmonic resonators: fundamental properties and applications

Abstract:Resonators of surface plasmons are discussed in this review. Any material supporting the excitation of surface plasmons, either by light, or by electron beams can be used for designing a resonator. Despite the number of materials supporting surface plasmons being restricted to a small number, noble metals, some two-dimensional materials as graphene, transition metal oxides, and several highly doped semiconductors have been used in plasmonic applications. Isolated and coupled metal nanoparticles, arrays of particles on substrates, nanoparticle suspensions, alternated metal and dielectric thin films, dielectric cavities in surfaces of noble metals and sheets and stripes of two-dimensional materials are typical examples of systems used for excitation of plasmonic resonances. These resonances have been used in a fast increasing number of applications: transformation of light beam properties, selective optical induced heating, sensing of chemical or biological compounds, enhancement of non-linear optical excitation in nanomaterials, optical coherence applications in quantum optics. The operating spectral range, variety of sizes, shapes and geometrical configurations that can be tailored and the exceptional optical properties of surface plasmons promote their use in a wide variety of applications at the nanoscale, where other types of resonators cannot be used, or are too inefficient.We review a large variety of plasmonic resonators and their most relevant properties. We first discuss the fundamental properties of the plasmonic resonances, using simple physical models. Then we present a retrospective of applications evidencing the most relevant aspects of interaction of surface plasmons with matter and radiation. Finally we focus the most recent applications covering metamaterials, plasmonic materials with topological properties and resonators supporting plasmon-electron interaction.

Abstract:Surface plasmons are coherent and collective electron oscillations confined at the dielectric–metal interface. Benefitting from the inherent subwavelength nature of spatial profile, surface plasmons can greatly accumulate the optical field and energy on the nanoscale and dramatically enhance various light–matter interactions. The properties of surface plasmons are strongly related to materials and structures, so that metals, semiconductors and two-dimensional materials with various morphologies and structures can have alternating plasmonic wavelengths ranging from ultraviolet, visible, near infrared to far infrared. Because the electric field can be enhanced by orders of magnitude within plasmonic structures, various light–matter interaction processes including fluorescence, Raman scattering, heat generation, photoacoustic effects, photocatalysis, nonlinear optical conversion, and solar energy conversion, can be significantly enhanced and these have been confirmed by both theoretical, computational and experimental studies. In this review, we present a concise introduction and discussion of various plasmon-enhanced light–matter interaction processes. We discuss the physical and chemical principles, influencing factors, computational and theoretical methods, and practical applications of these plasmon-enhanced processes and phenomena, with a hope to deliver guidelines for constructing future high-performance plasmonic devices and technologies.

Abstract:Abstract Metasurfaces are artificial two-dimensional (2D) planar surfaces that consist of subwavelength ‘meta-atoms’ (i.e. metallic or dielectric nanostructures). They are known for their capability to achieve better and more efficient light control in comparison to their traditional optical counterparts. Abrupt and sharp changes in the electromagnetic properties can be induced by the metasurfaces rather than the conventional gradual accumulation that requires greater propagation distances. Based on this feature, planar optical components like mirrors, lenses, waveplates, isolators and even holograms with ultrasmall thicknesses have been developed. Most of the current metasurface studies have focused on tailoring the linear optical effects for applications such as cloaking, lens imaging and 3D holography. Recently, the use of metasurfaces to enhance nonlinear optical effects has attracted significant attention from the research community. Benefiting from the resulting efficient nonlinear optical processes, the fabrication of integrated all-optical nano-devices with peculiar functionalities including broadband frequency conversions and ultrafast optical switching will become achievable. Plasmonic excitation is one of the most effective approaches to increase nonlinear optical responses due to its induced strong local electromagnetic field enhancement. For instance, continuous phase control on the effective nonlinear polarizability of plasmonic metasurfaces has been demonstrated through spin-rotation light coupling. The phase of the nonlinear polarization can be continuously tuned by spatially changing the meta-atoms’ orientations during second and third harmonic generation processes, while the nonlinear metasurfaces also exhibit homogeneous linear properties. In addition, an ultrahigh second-order nonlinear susceptibility of up to 10 4 pm V −1 has recently been reported by coupling the plasmonic modes of patterned metallic arrays with intersubband transition of multi-quantum-well layered substrate. In order to develop ultra-planar nonlinear plasmonic metasurfaces, 2D materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have been extensively studied based on their unique nonlinear optical properties. The third-order nonlinear coefficient of graphene is five times that of gold substrate, while TMDC materials also exhibit a strong second-order magnetic susceptibility. In this review, we first focus on the main principles of planar nonlinear plasmonics based on metasurfaces and 2D nonlinear materials. The advantages and challenges of incorporating 2D nonlinear materials into metasurfaces are discussed, followed by their potential applications including orbital angular momentum manipulating and quantum optics.

Abstract:Abstract Plasmonic metasurfaces, which can be considered as the two-dimensional analog of metal-based metamaterials, have attracted progressively increasing attention in recent years because of the ease of fabrication and unprecedented control over the reflected or transmitted light while featuring relatively low losses even at optical wavelengths. Among all the different design approaches, gap-surface plasmon metasurfaces – a specific branch of plasmonic metasurfaces – which consist of a subwavelength thin dielectric spacer sandwiched between an optically thick metal film and arrays of metal subwavelength elements arranged in a strictly or quasi-periodic fashion, have gained awareness from researchers working at practically any frequency regime as its realization only requires a single lithographic step, yet with the possibility to fully control the amplitude, phase, and polarization of the reflected light. In this paper, we review the fundamentals, recent developments, and opportunities of gap-surface plasmon metasurfaces. Starting with introducing the concept of gap-surface plasmon metasurfaces, we present three typical gap-surface plasmon resonators, introduce generalized Snell’s law, and explain the concept of Pancharatnam-Berry phase. We then overview the main applications of gap-surface plasmon metasurfaces, including beam-steerers, flat lenses, holograms, absorbers, color printing, polarization control, surface wave couplers, and dynamically reconfigurable metasurfaces. The review is ended with a short summary and outlook on possible future developments.

Recent Progress on Metamaterials: from Effective Medium Model to Real-Time Information Processing System

Abstract:Electromagnetic (EM) metamaterials are artificially engineered media composed of subwavelength unit cells, which achieve exotic EM properties beyond the limits of natural materials and provide great freedom to manipulate EM waves. Here, we review the recent progress on metamaterials in terms of three aspects: effective medium metamaterials, plasmonic metamaterials, and information metamaterials, respectively. In the first section for the effective medium metamaterials, we summarize the fundamental physics and typical applications such as invisibility cloaks, lenses, antennas, and other passive devices. Tunable, reconfigurable, and active metamaterials are also introduced. In the second section, we review the research progress of single plasmons at optical frequencies, and then present highly efficient excitation methods of spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and introduce typical passive and active SPP devices such as waveguides, beam splitters, filters, directional couplers, amplifiers, and second harmonic generators. SPP on-chip components and circuits are also investigated with the remarkable advantages in crosstalk reduction to solve the signal-integrity problem, which has challenged to the microwave devices and integrated circuit technologies for many years. Subsequently, spoof localized surface plasmons (LSPs) having novel resonant modes and potential application in high sensitivity sensors are illustrated. In the third section, we first give a brief introduction of EM metasurfaces as well as their applications in generation of optical vortex beams, holograms, and metalenses, and then give a comprehensive review on the recently proposed information metamaterials, including digital coding metamaterials and field-programmable metamaterials, by taking account of the physical principles and their new functions in real-time manipulation of the EM waves such as anomalous reflections or refractions, radar cross section (RCS) reductions, and beam scanning. We further demonstrate the applications of programmable metamaterials in programmable radar, imaging, wireless communication, and hologram systems. Finally, an outlook of the future directions of metamaterials is offered.
Fractal Plasmonic Metamaterials: Physics and Applications

Abstract:We review our recent works on a particular type of metamaterials (MTMs), which are metallic plates drilled with periodic arrays of subwavelength apertures typically in fractal-like complex shapes. We first show that such MTMs can well mimic plasmonic metals in terms of surface plasmon properties, but with plasmon resonances solely dictated by their aperture geometries rather than the constitutional materials. We then develop an effective-medium description for such plasmonic MTMs based on the mode expansion theory. Based on these theoretical understandings, we show that such MTMs exhibit several interesting applications, such as superlensing, hyperlensing, and enhancing light-matter interactions, which are demonstrated by microwave experiments or full-wave simulations.
Magneto-Plasmonic Nanoantennas: Basics and Applications (Review)

Abstract:Plasmonic nanoantennas is a hot and rapidly expanding research field. Here we overview basic operating principles and applications of novel magneto-plasmonic nanoantennas, which are made of ferromagnetic metals and driven not only by light, but also by external magnetic fields. We demonstrate that magneto-plasmonic nanoantennas enhance the magneto-optical effects, which introduces additional degrees of freedom in the control of light at the nano-scale. This property is used in conceptually new devices such as magneto-plasmonic rulers, ultra-sensitive biosensors, one-way subwavelength waveguides and extraordinary optical transmission structures, as well as in novel biomedical imaging modalities. We also point out that in certain cases 'non-optical' ferromagnetic nanostructures may operate as magneto-plasmonic nanoantennas. This undesigned extra functionality capitalises on established optical characterisation techniques of magnetic nanomaterials and it may be useful for the integration of nanophotonics and nanomagnetism on a single chip.
