Abstract:Point defects in piezoelectric semiconductors play a significant role in regulating the piezocatalytic performance. However, the role of metal vacancies in piezocatalysis has been less explored than that of oxygen vacancies. Herein, Bi2WO6 (BWO) nanosheets with tunable Bi defects were synthesized using an ion exchange method. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy directly revealed the existence of Bi vacancies in the lattice of BWO nanosheets and the precipitation of Bi quasiparticles. The BWO nanosheets with the highest concentration of Bi vacancies exhibited an excellent decomposition efficiency (7.83 × 10-2 min-1) over rhodamine B under ultrasound. The phenomenon is mainly attributed to the increased charge carrier concentration as a consequence of defect energy levels. In addition, the significant enhancement of light absorption capacity caused by the surface plasmon resonance effect of quasiparticles indicates that Bi ions escape from the lattice and combine with free electrons around BWO to form Bi quantum dots, which function as electron traps to facilitate the separation of charge carriers during the piezocatalytic process. This work systematically reveals the essential affiliation of metal vacancies and surface metal clusters in piezocatalysts and verifies the significance of vacancy engineering in piezocatalytic application.
Preparation and Piezoelectric Catalytic Performance of HT-Bi2MoO6 Microspheres for Dye Degradation

Abstract:HT-Bi2MoO6 microspheres were prepared by hydrothermal method and applied in piezoelectric catalytic degradation of dye. The crystallinity, morphology, optical property, and the surface chemical state of Bi2MoO6 catalyst were characterized by XRD, SEM, UV-vis and XPS techniques, respectively. The effects of catalyst preparation method, catalyst amount, dyes type and reaction conditions were investigated on the piezoelectric catalytic performance. The highest degradation ratio of 98.9% was achieved with 10 mg of HT-Bi2MoO6 catalyst after 45 min of piezoelectric catalytic vibration. In addition, a possible piezoelectric catalytic mechanism over HT-Bi2MoO6 catalyst has been proposed by active species trapping experiment. center dot O-2 and h(+) are suggested to be the main active species in the piezoelectric catalytic process. These research results show that the HT-Bi2MoO6 catalyst with flower-like microspheres morphology consisting of nanosheets can effectively transform mechanical energy into electrical energy by vibration to generate reactive species for the degradation of dyes. Novel Bi2WO6/ZnSnO3 heterojunction for the ultrasonic-vibration-driven piezocatalytic degradation of RhB

Abstract:This study designed and prepared a new piezoelectric catalytic nanomaterial, Bi2WO6/ZnSnO3, and applied it in piezocatalytic water purification. Results indicated that the composite had superior piezocatalytic efficiency and stability in rhodamine B (RhB) degradation under ultrasonic vibration. The Bi2WO6/ZnSnO3 sample with 10% Bi2WO6 had the optimum activity with a degradation rate of 2.15 h-1, which was 7.4 and 11.3 times that of ZnSnO3 and Bi2WO6, respectively. Various characterizations were conducted to study the morphology, structure, and piezoelectric properties of the Bi2WO6/ZnSnO3 composites and reveal the reasons for their improved piezocatalytic performance. Results showed that ZnSnO3 cubes were dispersed throughout the surface of Bi2WO6 nanosheets, which enhanced the specific surface area and facilitated the piezocatalytic reaction. Additionally, type-II heterojunction structures formed at the contact interface of Bi2WO6 and ZnSnO3, driving the migration of piezoelectric-induced electrons and holes. Accordingly, the separation efficiency of charge carriers improved, and the piezoelectric catalytic activity was significantly enhanced. This study may provide a potential composite catalyst and a promising idea for the design of highly efficient piezoelectric catalyst.

Abstract:The internal electric field induced by a piezoelectric effect is a promising method to suppress rapid electron-hole recombination of photocatalysis for environmental remediation. Herein, we fully utilized both piezoelectric and photocatalytic properties of Bi2WO6 nanoplates for the removal of organic pollutants. The degradation rate constant of piezo-photocatalysis is dramatically boosted to 0.077 min(-1) by the Bi2WO6 nanoplates, which is 4.2-fold of the photocatalysis alone. The superior catalytic activity of Bi2WO6 nanoplates was attributed to the accelerated electron-hole pair separation efficiency associated with the enhancement of the piezoelectric effect-induced internal electric field. Based on the theoretical calculation, the bandgap of Bi2WO6 nanoplates would decrease from 1.99 to 1.67 eV under mechanical strains, indicating that broader light harvesting and faster charge transfer can be achieved with the assistance of the piezoelectric field. Accordingly, multiple reactive oxygen species (center dot O-2(-) and center dot OH) are dominant for the degradation activity based on the quenching experiments and EPR analysis, outperforming piezocatalysis and photocatalysis. We have provided a new strategy to improve the catalytic decontamination performance.

Abstract:Piezoelectric semiconductors bear the bifunctional photocatalysis and piezocatalysis, while the absent or weak internal charge driving force severely restricts its catalytic activity. Developing polarization strategy is desirable, and particularly understanding its mechanism from a microscopic perspective remains scanty. Herein, we report a secondary recrystallization approach to achieving the simultaneous micro- and macroscopic polarization enhancement on Bi2WO6 nanosheets for boosting piezophotocatalytic oxygen activation, and unravel the mechanism at an atom-level. The secondary recrystallization process not only results in a strengthened distortion of [WO6] octahedra with distortion index enhancement by ~ 20% for a single octahedron, but also enables lateral crystal growth of nanosheets along the ab plane (av. 50 to 180 nm), which separately allows the rise in dipole moment of unit cell (e.g., 1.63 D increase along a axis) and the stacking of the distorted [WO6] octahedron to accumulate the unit cell dipole, collectively contributing to the considerably strengthened spontaneous polarization and piezoelectricity. Besides, exposure of large-area {001} front facet enables more efficient capture and conversion of stress into piezo-potential. Therefore, the well-recrystallized Bi2WO6 nanosheets exhibit considerably promoted piezo-photocatalytic reactive oxygen species generation, given the decreased specific surface area. This work presents a feasible methodology to regulate inside-out polarization for guiding carriers transfer behavior, and may advance the solid understanding on the intrinsic mechanism.

Tip effect and structural disordering in Bi2WO6 for enhanced piezo-photocatalytic nitrogen oxidation to nitric acid

Abstract:Piezo-photo coupling effect in charge separation has garnered substantial attention in recent research. However, the piezoelectricity-induced charges are inevitably depleted by the photoinduced current near the interface. Herein, we propose a meticulously designed conformity-directional dual electric field by introducing the tip effects and structural disordering in Bi2WO6. In the absence of cocatalysts, Bi and O vacancies rich Bi2WO6 with a Bi0 cluster (Bi0/Bi2−xWO6−x, BBW) exhibited remarkable piezo-photocatalytic nitrogen oxidation to nitric acid rates (5.26 mg g−1 h−1), which is 5 times that of pure Bi2WO6. Theoretical and experimental results demonstrated that the cluster and vacancies acted as the major strain and potential center, which can be referred to as the “tip effect” and structural disordering that enhanced the piezoelectric-polarization electric field and the photoinduced built-in electric field along the same direction to promote charge transfer and exciton dissociation. Moreover, the cluster and vacancies acted as activation sites for O2 and N2, reducing the surface reaction barrier. Thus, the proposed method will aid in designing dual-polarization electric fields for enhancing carrier separation.

Abstract:In this work, a Z-scheme Bi2S3-Bi2WO6 (BS-BWO) heterojunction with interfacial Bi-S bonds was constructed by in-situ growing Bi2S3 nanorods on Bi2WO6 nanosheets. The obtained BS-BWO heterojunction exhibited significantly enhanced piezocatalytic performance on carbamazepine (CBZ) degradation with an apparent rate constant of 0.087 min−1. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations together with experimental characterizations illustrated that the boosted piezocatalytic performance of BS-BWO could be ascribed to the Z-scheme charge transfer through the formed Bi-S bonds, which increased the charge transfer/separation efficiency and maintained the strong redox ability of photogenerated electrons/holes. Moreover, the increased piezoelectric potential of BS-BWO, as supported by COMSOL simulation, also contributed to the enhanced piezocatalytic performance. This study sheds light on the design and development of promising piezocatalysts for environmental remediation.

Abstract:Construction of heterojunction piezo-photocatalysts is a promising approach to improve catalytic performance for solving environmental pollution issues. However, the mechanism of the synergistic effect of defects and piezoelectric fields on the interface polarization, charge transfer, and active sites in heterojunctions still needs to be further explored. Here, oxygen vacancy-rich Bi2MoO6 (VBMO) and TiO2 (TO) were combined into an S-scheme heterojunction (VBMO-xTO) by hydrothermal method for piezo-photocatalytic degradation of gatifloxacin (GAT). Experimental and theoretical results confirm that oxygen vacancies induce the formation of Mo (VBMO)-O (TO) bonds at the interface, which in turn aggravates the internal reconstruction of the heterojunction. Simultaneously, the formed interface bonds strengthen the interface bonding force, improve its piezoelectric polarization, and acts as an interface electron bridge to promote charge transfer. In addition, under the action of ultrasound, the piezoelectric field generated by the compressive stress regulates the electron distribution of the heterojunction and enhances its adsorption performance. Benefiting from the synergistic reinforcement mechanism, VBMO-15TO exhibits excellent piezo-photocatalytic degradation of GAT, and the degradation rate is 92.5 % in only 6 min. This study provides a reference for understanding the effect of defects on the piezoelectric properties of heterojunctions.

Abstract:Piezocatalytic technology represents an innovative form of advanced oxidation technology for degradation of organic pollutants. Piezoelectric catalysis technology combines electrochemistry and piezoelectric properties, and promotes charge transfer through a piezoelectric field, thus promoting catalytic reactions. This study employed a one-step microwave method to fabricate an α-Bi 2 O 3 /BiO 2 heterojunction with a narrow bandgap. This catalyst exhibited a high efficiency in the degradation of methyl orange dye, achieving a removal rate of 93% in 60 minutes, with a reaction rate constant of 0.0324 min −1 . The investigation of the catalytic mechanism demonstrates that the construction of the α-Bi 2 O 3 /BiO 2 heterojunction facilitates the separation of charge carriers, increases the degree of polarization, and consequently enhances the efficiency of piezoelectric catalytic degradation. This work opens the way for the design and development of high-performance piezoelectric catalysts.

Abstract:The internal polarizations of polar photocatalysts could be enhanced through unit cell structure modulations to improve their photocatalytic performances. In this work, a simple, robust and low-cost NaOH etching process is developed to treat ultrathin Bi2WO6 nanosheets after their creation, resulting in a higher degree of polyhedron distortion (∼141 %) and an enhanced piezoelectricity (∼260 % the maximum effective piezoelectric coefficient d 33). Compared with pristine ultrathin Bi2WO6 nanosheets, these etched samples demonstrate an improved charge carrier separation and transfer behavior due to their enhanced internal polarization with the assistance of richer oxygen vacancies, which largely enhance their piezocatalysis (∼4.6 times), photocatalysis (∼14.3 times) and especially coupled photopiezocatalysis (∼33.9 times) performances as demonstrated in their sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation performances. ·O2 –, 1O2 and h + are proven to be main reactive oxygen species (ROSs) during their photopiezocatalytic process and they could also work well in the real water matrix.

Abstract:Piezo-electricity, as a unique physical phenomenon, demonstrates high effectiveness in capturing the environmental mechanical energy into polarization charges, offering the possibility to activate the advanced oxidation processes via the electron pathway. However, information regarding the intensification of Fe(VI) through piezo-catalysis is limited. Therefore, our study is the first to apply Bi2WO6 nanoplates for piezo-catalyzation of Fe(VI) to enhance bisphenol A (BPA) degradation. Compared to Fe(VI) alone, the Fe(VI)/piezo/Bi2WO6 system exhibited excellent BPA removal ability, with the degradation rate increased by 32.6% at pH 9.0. Based on the experimental and theoretical results, Fe(VI), Fe(V), Fe(IV) and •OH were confirmed as reaction active species in the reaction, and the increased BPA removal mainly resulted from the enhanced formation of Fe(IV)/Fe(V) species. Additionally, effects of coexisting anions (e.g., Cl-, NO3-, SO42- and HCO3-), humic acid and different water matrixes (e.g., deionized water, tap water and lake water) on BPA degradation were studied. Results showed the Fe(VI)/piezo/Bi2WO6 system still maintained satisfactory BPA degradation efficiencies under these conditions, guaranteeing future practical applications in surface water treatment. Furthermore, the results of intermediates identification, ECOSAR calculation and cytotoxicity demonstrated that BPA degradation by Fe(VI)/piezo/Bi2WO6 posed a diminishing ecological risk. Overall, these findings provide a novel mechanical energy-driven piezo-catalytic approach for Fe(VI) activation, enabling highly efficient pollutant removal under alkaline condition.

Abstract:2D piezoelectric catalysts with strong piezoresponse and high piezoelectric potential have valuable applications in catalytic degradation of organic pollutants and antibiotics, but the development of novel nanomaterials with powerful piezopotential still remains a serious challenge. Bismuth oxysulfide (Bi2O2S) nanosheets possessing large piezoelectric potentials were prepared using a low-heating solid-state chemical reaction and used for the first time for piezoelectric catalysis in this work. Moreover, Bi2O2S nanosheets can degrade pollutants universally, and the degradation efficiencies of methyl blue and rhodamine B are as high as 97.7% and 92.9% within 60 min under ultrasonication, respectively, which is superior to most piezoelectric materials reported in the literature.

Abstract:This work was designed to show the application of BiVO4/Bi4V2O10 nanostructured heterojunction composites in piezocatalysis. The BiVO4/Bi4V2O10 composites prepared by a solvothermal method realized dye degradation via utilizing vibration energy. Various factors affecting the piezocatalytic property of the composite catalyst were investigated. The highest rhodamine B (RhB) degradation rate of 99.3% was achieved after 45 min of ultrasonic vibration on the BiVO4/Bi4V2O10 composite catalyst prepared with 3 h of solvothermal time at 140 °C. The structure, morphology, and optical property of the as-prepared catalysts were extensively characterized. The good piezocatalytic activity of the composite was ascribed to the hierarchical morphology of the nanoporous sphere coated with nanoflakes, and the formation of a heterojunction structure between BiVO4 and Bi4V2O10, which effectively separated the ultrasound-induced electron–hole pairs and suppressed their recombination. Based on the band potentials of BiVO4 and Bi4V2O10, a plausible mechanism for piezocatalytic dye degradation was proposed, which was confirmed by the quenching effect of various radical scavengers. This work demonstrates the potential use of BiVO4/Bi4V2O10 nanocomposites in piezocatalytic applications and provides valuable insights into the design and preparation of piezocatalysts for water purification.

Abstract:Hierarchical structure Bi2MoxW1-xO6 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5) solid solutions with high surface area are prepared by hydrothermal method without employing any surfactant. All the as-prepared products are hierarchical microspheres self-assembled by nanosheets. The piezocatalytic performance of Bi2MoxW1-xO6 solid solutions are investigated by the degradation of RhB under ultrasonic vibration. The experimental results show that the x value of Bi2MoxW1-xO6 has great influence on the piezocatalytic efficiency. Among which, the Bi2Mo0.4W0.6O6 presents a high value of the rate constant k of 0.119 min-1 by degrading 97.5% of RhB dye solution in 30 min. It is about 43.4% higher than that of pure Bi2WO6 sample, for which k is 0.083 min-1. Radical trapping test indicates that holes (h+) are the dominating active species in the degradation process. The improved piezocatalytic performance for Bi2Mo0.4W0.6O6 sample ascribes to the larger piezoelectric potential generated under a strained state, which facilitates the transfer of charge carriers and accelerate the piezocatalytic process. Our work presents a new design strategy of piezocatalysts for remediation of water pollution.

Abstract:Stress-induced polarization is deemed to be an important avenue for enhancing photocatalytic activity of photocatalysts, which has drawn considerable attention recently. In this report, we have experimentally and theoretically studied the piezoelectricity-enhanced photocatalytic activity and involved mechanism of Bi2MoO6 nanosheets derived via a hydrothermal synthesis route. Simulated sunlight, ultrasonic and both of them were used to drive the photocatalysis, piezocatalysis and piezo-photocatalysis, respectively. It is demonstrated that, for degradation of various organic dyes and antibiotics, the Bi2MoO6 nanosheets manifest a piezo-photocatalytic activity obviously larger than single photocatalytic activity and piezocatalytic activity with synergistic factor SF > 1. The piezoelectricity in the Bi2MoO6 nanosheets and its enhanced photocatalytic mechanism were elucidated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with finite-element method (FEM) simulations. Additionally, taking the typical organic dye — methylene blue (MB) as an example, we have also investigated the effects of various factors on its degradation efficiency, degradation pathways and mechanism, as well as toxic assessment of degradation by-products.

Abstract:Piezocatalytic therapy is a new‐emerging reactive oxygen species (ROS) enabled therapeutic strategy that relies on built‐in electric field and energy band bending of piezoelectric materials activated by ultrasound irradiation. Despite becoming a hot topic, material development and mechanism exploration are still underway. Herein, as‐synthesized oxygen‐vacancy‐rich BiO2−x nanosheets (NSs) demonstrate outstanding piezoelectric properties. Under ultrasound, a piezo‐potential of 0.25 V for BiO2−x NSs is sufficient to tilt the conduction band to be more negative than the redox potentials of O2/·O2−, ·O2−/ H2O2, and H2O2/·OH, which initiates a cascade reaction for ROS generation. Moreover, the BiO2−x NSs exhibit peroxidase and oxidase‐like activities to augment ROS production, especially in the H2O2‐overexpressed tumor microenvironment. Density functional theory calculations show that the generated oxygen vacancies in BiO2−x NSs is favorable for H2O2 adsorption and increasing the carrier density to produce ROS. Furthermore, the quick movement of electrons enables an excellent sonothermal effect, e.g., rapid rise in temperature to nearly 65°C upon ultrasound with low power (1.2 W/cm2) and short time (96 s). Therefore, our system realizes a multimode synergistic combination of piezocatalytic, enzymatic, and sonothermal therapies, providing a new direction for defect engineering‐optimized piezoelectric materials for tumor therapy. Abstract:Oxygen vacancy (OV) is one of the most common defects in piezoelectric materials, and the concentration of OV can dramatically influence the performance of piezoelectric materials. It is of great scientific significance to clarify the effect of OV on the piezocatalytic performance. Here, eco-friendly piezoelectric (Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3 (BNT) crystallites with various OV concentrations are employed to explore the role of OV in piezocatalysis. Experimental and theoretical results comprehensively elucidate that the OV plays a double-edged-sword role in regulating the piezocatalytic performance. It reveals that increasing the concentration of OV enhances the adsorption of O2 and OH- onto the surface of BNT crystallite and improves the charge concentration, which helps charges transport from BNT to O2 and OH-, contributing to the generation of active radicals for boosting the piezocatalytic performance. However, the increase of OV weakens the piezoelectric property, which is adverse to charge transfer and thus decreases active oxygen species, suppressing the piezocatalytic activity. This work not only theoretically clarifies the regulation mechanism of OV engineering on piezocatalytic performance, but also experimentally provides an effective method to improve piezocatalytic activity by OV engineering.

Abstract:Piezoelectric effect has been widely applied for energy harvesting via constructing nano energy generator in piezoelectric materials , while its application in water treatment is relatively limited. Recently, the piezoelectric effect has been employed to generate reactive species for water decontamination via induced dipole moment in the piezoelectric materials. The piezo-catalytic process can utilize natural mechanical energy, which includes wind, water flow, waves etc., and has drawn lots of attention. Meanwhile, it can be easily coupled with other oxidation process to further improve the performance. On the other hand, the development of piezo-catalytic membrane solves the secondary pollution of the powder materials and has evolved rapidly as a novel technology for water decontamination. This review compiles the latest information on the application of piezoelectric materials in water decontamination, mainly including the organic pollutants degradation and bacterial inactivation. Firstly, the piezoelectric effect was described followed by the summary of different piezoelectric materials employed for water decontamination via piezo, piezo-photo and piezo-persulfate activation processes. Secondly, the preparation and application of piezo-catalytic membrane were revealed, mainly focused on the organic pollutants degradation and membrane fouling elimination. Thirdly, the current challenges including the material synthesis and characterization, process design and reaction mechanism description were described followed by the future research direction recommendation. Overall, the current work could meet the demand of the researchers who are working on the piezoelectric materials for the application of eliminating organic pollutants in wastewater, by providing timely and systematic information on this topic.

Enhancement of the Piezocatalytic Response of La‐Doped BiFeO3 Nanoparticles by Defects Synergy

Abstract:Defect and piezopotential synergy as a route for enhancing piezocatalytic performances: Piezoelectric La‐doped BiFeO3 nanoparticles are fabricated by low‐temperature chemical route, to investigate how point defects affect the piezocatalytic properties of BiFeO3. We show that the presence of oxygen vacancies and Fe2+providing further reactive sites, more carriers better charge transfer, and internal defect‐dipole fields leads to a record‐high piezocatalytic value in Bi0.99La0.01FeO3. The finding provides a new strategy for improving the piezocatalytic activity of BiFeO3. Because of their intrinsic polarization and related properties, ferroelectrics attract significant attention to address energy transformation and environmental protection. Here, by using trivalent‐ion‐lanthanum doping of BiFeO3 nanoparticles (NPs), it is shown that defects and piezoelectric potential are synergized to achieve a high piezocatalytic effect for decomposing the model Rhodamine B (RhB) pollutant, reaching a record‐high piezocatalytic rate of 21 360 L mol−1 min−1 (i.e., 100% RhB degradation within 20 min) that exceeds most state‐of‐the art ferroelectrics. The piezocatalytic Bi0.99La0.01FeO3 NPs are also demonstrated to be versatile toward various pharmaceutical pollutants with over 90% removal efficiency, making them extremely efficient piezocatalysts for water purification. It is also shown that 1% La‐doping introduces oxygen vacancies and Fe2+ defects. It is thus suggested that oxygen vacancies act as both active sites and charge providers, permitting more surface adsorption sites for the piezocatalysis process, and additional charges and better energy transfer between the NPs and surrounding molecules. Furthermore, the oxygen vacancies are proposed to couple to Fe2+ to form defect dipoles, which in turn introduces an internal field, resulting in more efficient charge de‐trapping and separation when added to the piezopotential. This synergistic mechanism is believed to provide a new perspective for designing future piezocatalysts with high performance.

Abstract:Piezocatalysis offers an encouraging alternative for the sustainable, on-demand, and decentralized production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), underscoring the importance of enhancing piezocatalytic efficiency. Enhancing piezocatalysts through defect engineering has shown considerable potential in boosting H2O2 production efficiency. However, the impact of oxygen vacancies on piezocatalytic activity remains unclear. Herein, we used a chemical probe method to quantify negative charges (q-) and superoxide radicals (O2-) to explore the relation between the oxygen vacancy concentration and piezocatalytic performance of bismuth titanate (Bi4Ti3O12) based catalysts. Results indicate that piezocatalytic H2O2 production in pure water demonstrates a volcanic trend with increasing oxygen vacancy concentration. This trend is attributed to the dual role of oxygen vacancies, which reduce the piezoelectric property of the piezocatalyst while simultaneously increasing the concentration of O2-, which is crucial for H2O2 formation through the O2 reduction pathway. This study provides insights into the interplay between oxygen vacancies, piezoelectric properties, and piezocatalytic activity, offering valuable guidance for the design of piezocatalysts for sustainable H2O2 production.
