Abstract:Raman lasers generated by optical injection locking can be used in atom interferometers. However, phase noise significantly affects the phase of atom interference fringe; thus, we experimentally study the phase noise of the Raman laser under varying conditions. Two phase-locked Raman lasers exhibiting a frequency difference of 6.831 GHz arc obtained by modulation of optical fiber clectro-optic modulation (EOM) and injection locking. In the experimental system, the master laser is modulated using a 6. 831-GHz fiber EOM, and its output is emitted as seed light. By adjusting the slave laser, the first amplification output beam of 1 level frequency-shifted laser can be obtained. The result demonstrates that the Raman laser beat lincwidth is not wider than 3 Hz, the frequency is adjustable to 300 MHz, and the phase noise is less than 60 dblc/Hz from 10 Hz to 100 kHz when the master laser is frequency-locked.

Abstract:The optoelectronic oscillator is a delay line oscillator that leverages optical fibre technology to realize the large delay required for low phase noise systems. Spurious sidemodes are an artefact of the delay line oscillator, yet treatments of injection locking of optoelectronic oscillators have relied on the application of classical injection locking theory valid only for single mode oscillators. The large delay contributed by the optical fibre delay line is accounted for by the classical theory only in part through the quality factor Q that captures the round-trip group delay in a neighborhood of the oscillation frequency. This paper presents a new formulation of time delay oscillators subject to injection that describes all the essential features of their dynamics and phase noise. The common assumptions of a single mode oscillator and weak injection are removed. This is important to correctly predict the lock-in range, the suppression of sidemodes and the phase noise spectrum. The findings of the analysis are validated by experimental measurements provided by an optoelectronic oscillator under injection by an external source.

Abstract:We report a novel optical pulse generation method for high-speed wavelength switching of amplified nanosecond (ns) laser pulses resonant to atomic <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://transitions.Under" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> free-running condition, a slave laser diode is blue-detuned with tens of GHz relative to the master laser. A ns pulse chain generated by modulating the continuous-wave master laser with a fiber-pigtailed electro-optical intensity modulator is injected into the slave laser diode to fast switch the slave laser's wavelength back and forth. The output beam of slave laser is filtered by a temperature-controlled etalon to get the amplified pulse chain. Based on our dynamic injection locking scheme, we produce a ns-scale square pulse chain with an effective ON/OFF ratio 10^8, considering at least the 60 dB scattering suppression by tuning light-atom interactions with far off-resonance detuning and 26.7 dB suppression ratio of the etalon. By studying the dynamic processes of injection locking, we determine the dependence of injection locking on both the injection power and the frequency detuning.

Abstract:Injection locking is a powerful technique for synchronization of oscillator networks and controlling the phase and frequency of individual oscillators using similar or other types of oscillators. Here, we present the first demonstration of injection locking of a radiation-pressure driven optomechanical oscillator (OMO) via acoustic waves. As opposed to previously reported techniques (based on pump modulation or direct application of a modulated electrostatic force), injection locking of OMO via acoustic waves does not require optical power modulation or physical contact with the OMO and it can easily be implemented on various platforms. Using this approach we have locked the phase and frequency of two distinct modes of a microtoroidal silica OMO to a piezoelectric transducer (PZT). We have characterized the behavior of the injection locked OMO with three acoustic excitation configurations and showed that even without proper acoustic impedance matching the OMO can be locked to the PZT and tuned over 17 kHz with only -30 dBm of RF power fed to the PZT. The high efficiency, simplicity and scalability of the proposed approach paves the road toward a new class of photonic systems that rely on synchronization of several OMOs to a single or multiple RF oscillators with applications in optical communication, metrology and sensing. Beyond its practical applications, injection locking via acoustic waves can be used in fundamental studies in quantum optomechanics where thermal and optical isolation of the OMO are critical.

Abstract:We demonstrate injection-locking of 120mW laser diodes operating at 397nm. We achieve stable operation with injection powers of ~100uW and a slave laser output power of up to 110mW. We investigate the spectral purity of the slave laser light via photon scattering experiments on a single trapped Ca40 ion. We show that it is possible to achieve a scattering rate indistinguishable from that of monochromatic light by filtering the laser light with a diffraction grating to remove amplified spontaneous emission.

Abstract:When a signal is injected in a parametric oscillator close enough to its resonance, the oscillator frequency and phase get locked to those of the injected signal. Here, we demonstrate two frequency locking schemes using a Josephson mixer in the parametric down-conversion regime, pumped beyond the parametric oscillation threshold. The circuit then emits radiation out of two spectraly and spatially separated resonators at frequencies determined by the locking schemes that we choose. When we inject the signal close to a resonance, it locks the oscillator emission to the signal frequency by injection locking. When we inject the signal close to the difference of resonances, it locks the oscillator emission by parametric locking. We compare both schemes and investigate the dependence of the parametric locking range on the pump and the injection signal power. Our results can be interpreted using Adler's theory for lasers, which makes a new link between laser physics and superconducting circuits that could enable better understanding of pumped circuits for quantum information applications such as error correction, circulators and photon number detectors.

Abstract:We present detailed numerical simulations of the laser dynamics that describe optical frequency comb formation by injection-locking a gain-switched laser. The typical rate equations for semiconductor lasers including stochastic carrier recombination and spontaneous emission suffice to show the injection-locking behavior of gain switched lasers, and we show how the optical frequency comb evolves starting from the free-running state, right through the final injection- locked state. Unlike the locking of continuous wave lasers, we show that the locking range for gain switched lasers is considerably greater because injection locking can be achieved by injecting at frequencies close to one of the comb lines. The quality of the comb lines are formally assessed by calculating the FM-noise spectral density and we show that under injection-locking conditions the FM-noise spectral density of the comb lines tend to that of the maser laser.

Abstract:Phonon lasers, as analogues of optical lasers, have received widespread attention in optomechanical systems. In this Article, we achieve phonon laser self-injection locking using a microwave photonic architecture with a feedback loop, which can be analyzed as an optoelectronic cavity. The line width of the phonon laser with mechanical frequency of 4.97 GHz is narrowed from 3 kHz to 150 Hz at room temperature. The phase noise of the phonon laser can be as low as -95 dBc/Hz at a frequency offset of 10 kHz, representing a decrease of 40 dB compared to the free-running state. Additionally, we lock two phonon lasers onto different cavity modes within the same fiber loop, achieving a parallel output of the phonon lasers. This research yields promising results in the development of a low-noise oscillator, a coherent phonon laser, and mode-locked phonon lasers in optomechanical arrays.

Abstract:A novel optical injection locking amplifier with acousto-optic modulator based phase modulation and a coherent detection scheme for optical frequency transfer applications is experimentally demonstrated in this study. A commercial distributed feedback diode laser is injection-locked to the resonant frequency of the optical signal with an optical fiber path length of hundreds of kilometers. This provides approximately 59 dB gain and ensures that the input carrier frequency fractional stability can be as good as 10 −20 at 1000 s. The amplifier was tested for the transfer of a commercial narrow-linewidth laser in a 180 km fiber link to a remote site with only a single amplification step. The transferred frequency at the remote end reached 10 −20 at 20000 s, which is suitable for optical frequency distribution and remote comparison between optical atomic clocks.
Long-term stable laser injection locking for quasi-CW applications

Abstract:Generating high output powers while achieving narrow line single mode lasing are often mutual exclusive properties of commercial laser diodes. For this reason, efficient and scalable amplification of narrow line laser light is still a major driving point in modern laser system designs. Commonly, injection locking of high-power semiconductor laser diodes are used for this purpose. However, for many laser diodes it is very challenging to achieve stable operation of the injection locked state due to a complex interplay of non-linearities and thermal effects. Different approaches of active or passive stabilization usually require a large overhead of optical and electrical equipment and are not generally applicable. In our work we present a passive stabilization scheme, that is generally applicable, technically easy to implement and extremely cost-effective. It is based on the externally synchronized automatic acquisition of the optimal injection state. Central to our simple but powerful scheme is the management of thermalization effects during lock acquisition. By periodical relocking, spectrally pure amplified light is maintained in a quasi-CW manner over long timescales. We characterize the performance of our method for laser diodes amplifying 671 nm light and demonstrate the general applicability by confirming the method to work also for laser diodes at 401 nm, 461 nm and 689 nm. Our scheme enables the scaled operation of injection locks, even in cascaded setups, for the distributed amplification of single frequency laser light.

Abstract:A finely frequency tunable coupled optoelectronic oscillator (COEO) based on injection locking and phase locked loop is proposed and demonstrated. By investigating a dynamic relation between the frequency locking range and injection locking ratio, an optimum injection locking ratio with sufficient locking range is obtained so as finely frequency tracking and locking with high stability is achieved by tuning the frequency of the injected signal and controlling an optical tunable delay line (OTDL). Through optimizing the injection ratio, a trade-off between the suppression of the near-carrier phase noise and the excellent far-carrier phase noise is realized. In the experiment, a high quality COEO with a tuning range of 1.76 MHz and a precise tuning step of 10 Hz is demonstrated. The measured sidemode suppression ratio (SMSR) at 9.95554 GHz reaches 78.2 dB, and a frequency drift of better than 1 ppb during a 1-hour is observed. The phase noise at 10 kHz offset is measured to be −130.04 dBc/Hz, and the Allan deviation (ADEV) reaches 1.39 × 10 −13 at averaged time of 100 s.

Abstract:As self-sustained oscillators, lasers possess the unusual ability to spontaneously synchronize. These nonlinear dynamics are the basis for a simple yet powerful stabilization technique known as injection locking, in which a laser's frequency and phase can be controlled by an injected signal. Due to its inherent simplicity and favorable noise characteristics, injection locking has become a workhorse for coherent amplification and high-fidelity signal synthesis in applications ranging from precision atomic spectroscopy to distributed sensing. Within integrated photonics, however, these injection locking dynamics remain relatively untapped--despite significant potential for technological and scientific impact. Here, we demonstrate injection locking in a silicon photonic Brillouin laser for the first time. Injection locking of this monolithic device is remarkably robust, allowing us to tune the laser emission by a significant fraction of the Brillouin gain bandwidth. Harnessing these dynamics, we demonstrate amplification of small signals by more than 23 dB. Moreover, we demonstrate that the injection locking dynamics of this system are inherently nonreciprocal, yielding unidirectional control and back-scatter immunity in an all-silicon system. This device physics opens the door to new strategies for phase noise reduction, low-noise amplification, and back-scatter immunity in silicon photonics.

Abstract:We report on a novel phase-locking technique for fiber-based Mach-Zehnder interferometers based on discrete single-photon detections, and demonstrate this in a setup. Our interferometer decodes relative-phase-encoded optical pulse pairs for quantum key distribution applications and requires no locking laser in addition to the weak received signal. Our new simple locking scheme is shown to produce an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck dynamic and achieve optimal phase noise for a given count rate. In case of wavelength drifts that arise during the reception of Doppler-shifted satellite signals, the arm-length difference gets continuously readjusted to keep the interferometer phase stable.

Abstract:We present a coherent bichromatic laser system with low phase noise. An optical injection process is used to generate coherent laser beams with a frequency difference of 9.192 631 77 GHz using an electro-optical modulator. An optical phase-locked loop is then applied to reduce the phase noise. The phase noise of the beat note is -41, -81, -98, -83, and -95 dBrad2/Hz at the offset frequencies of 1 Hz, 100 Hz, 1 kHz, 10 kHz, and 1 MHz, respectively. Compared to a system that uses optical injection alone, the phase noise is reduced by up to 20-30 dB in the low-frequency range, and the intermodulation effect on the continuous atomic clock is reduced by an order of magnitude. This configuration can adjust the intensities and polarizations of the laser beams independently and reduce the phase noise caused by environmental disturbances and optical injection, which may be useful for application to atomic coherence experiments.

Abstract:Injection locking is a well-established technique widely used in optics as well as solid-state devices for efficient suppression of noise. We present the spectroscopic characterization of the effect of the injection-locking signal (ILS) in mitigating the phase noise of a Josephson parametric oscillator (JPO), whose output oscillating phase undergoes indeterministic switching between the bistable states with symmetry $\theta \rightarrow{\theta+\pi}$. With the injection of a weak locking signal, we measure the phase noise power spectral density of the self-sustained oscillator output state for different locking signal strengths. We observed suppression of phase noise by injection locking. As the ILS strength surpasses more than a few photons, the output state stays completely pinned to the locking phase of the ILS, and the random telegraphic noise due to the switching of the states is significantly suppressed.

Abstract:This article mainly focuses on the side mode injection locking phenomena when a single-loop optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is under RF signal injection. The analyses are made regarding lock range, phase noise and locking time. Also, a comparative study has been prepared when the OEO is injection-locked in the first side and the main mode. We show that the lock range is smaller for injection-locked OEO in the first side mode than in the main mode. The phase noise performance of the OEO for both cases is also demonstrated. It is exhibited that the phase noise performance is better in the case of injection-locked OEO at first side mode, particularly in a strong injection regime. The transient behaviour is also approximated by measuring locking time in both cases. The lock range, phase noise and locking time dependency on optical fibre length have also been studied. Finally, we perform experiments to support our analytical findings developed earlier.

Abstract:Two narrow linewidth Nd:YAG unidirectional nonplanar ring oscillator lasers were electronically phase locked using photorefractive two-wave mixing in an iron-doped indium phosphide (InP:Fe) crystal as an optical phase detector. The phase lock loop phase error signal was derived from a low-amplitude sinusoidal phase modulation signal impressed on the strong local oscillator beam at a frequency large compared to the inverse of the photorefractive-grating formation time. A 60-mW pump laser was phase locked to a 10-nW signal laser beam with an rms phase error less than 0.1 rad. No spatial mode matching, phase conjugate mirror configuration or optical coupling between the two laser cavities were required.<>
